The Peregrine. A USB peripheral that fits over your left hand and enables more than 30 individual commands to be mapped to your fingers.

Tonight we will give a brief review of the product, while interviewing Brent Baier – Inventor of the Peregrine, and CTO of Ironwill Innovations.

Show Feeds:

QUALITY

  • Sturdy lightweight fabric
  • Ventilation areas
  • Tight, non-obtrusive stitching (except inside the fingertips)
  • High quality materials (stainless steel wiring, gold-plated contacts)

THE SOFTWARE

  • GloveBox is very intuitive
  • Allows you to map almost anything to any finger, even key combos
  • Supports 5 keymaps per profile STORED IN THE POD

THE POD

  • Customizable LED and backplates
  • Magnetic attachment
  • “Always on” so no Connect/Disconnect noises or system popups
  • (Q: How much storage, can you fit GloveBox in there in future versions?)

THE TOUCH

  • Almost no pressure is required, it senses the moment the two points contact
  • Touch points can be calibrated to move along the trace wires, and be larger/smaller by choice

THE PERFORMANCE

  • Due to thick stitching at the seams along the fingertips, I found it almost impossible to use in conjunction with a keyboard.
  • When I was able to remove the keyboard from the equation, it worked like a DREAM.
  • Recommended for:
    • Click-based RPGs like Diablo, Titan’s Quest and Torchlight
    • Any MMOG that allows for mouse-based movement (STO, WoW, etc.)
    • Strategy games like Civilization, StarCraft, etc.
    • Creative software like AutoCAD, Maya, Photoshop, Final Cut, etc.
  • NOT Recommended for:
    • FPS style games, including some first-person RPGs (Fallout, e.g.)
    • Any game that relies on WASD-based movement.
    • Anyone that relies on typing while in game

Who doesn’t love a good glass of wine, or a nice chilled bottle of beer? With Oktoberfest getting underway, we decided to cover a few recent stories related to our beloved libations – from cooking, to science, and even ART! Alcohol is all over our world, and a part of our lives.

Show Feeds:

Tonight’s Show Notes & Download Below:

The 200th Anniversary celebration of Oktoberfest began on Sept 18th in Munich

  • The first Fest was held to commemorate the marriage of some royalty.  I guess they liked beer.
  • Also sprang up from a decree from the 1500s which forbade brewing during the hotter drier months of Summer due to fire hazards, and so over the Summer, beer would be slowly rationed out to make sure they didn’t run out.  Then when they could brew again (October), they’d go drink like crazy to celebrate their ability to make more beer!
  • Pictures, pictures, pictures and more pictures

Timely news stories:
Fast & Cheap Technique for Infusing Flavors into Booze

  • Using a regular household “whipper”, you can infuse flavors into any liquid.
  • Examples in this article include infusing basil and parsley into a white wine, among others.
  • Similar beverages usually require the use of expensive machinery ($2k+).  This method, produces hand-crafted concoctions for a fraction of the price.

Artistic Pictures of Microscopic Structure of Alcoholic Drinks

  • Homepage:  https://www.bevshots.com/
  • Allow the mixture to crystallize on a slide, then photograph under a polarized light microscope.
  • Can take up to three months and as many as 200 attempts.
  • The bright colors in the mixed cocktails are the result of dried out citric acid and complex sugars.
  • Full gallery of available prints:  https://www.bevshots.com/all.html

Alcohol Is Good For You!

  • In studies around the globe, evidence mounts up that moderate-to-heavy drinking increases your lifespan.
  • Nobody has nailed down the “why” … but who cares!  Let’s drink!
  • Leading theories: Relaxation and Socialization.

Someone figured out how to Deep Fry Beer

  • Obviously it was born in Texas.
  • I love the last line in this article:  “Last year’s winner of the Texas state fair fried food competition was a recipe for deep-fried butter.”

Urinals for Sorting Your Pee
Spotted in Germany, said to be a joke regarding Germany’s prolific recycling sorting stations.

Even video games celebrate booze!
World of Warcraft announces the beginning of this year’s Brewfest!

This week on Joint Failures!

We review a sweet HD P.O.V. cam, give you some RAD sites from our bookmarks, we talk swine flu with our personal experiences, review Borderlands, and tell you how to turn cheap Windows 7 disc into an ULTIMATE edition!

RAD Sites:

classiccinemaonline.com – Classy look to it, great old films
Classic Cinema Online has hundreds of films in dozens of categories, ranging from Action to Westerns and even old cinema shorts and news reels. They routinely feature selections of movies based on the time of year, holidays, and other notable events. This week, of course, it’s classic spooky, scary, and supernatural movies in honor of Halloween’s approach.

instantwatcher.com – Instantwatcher helps you find what you want to watch from Netflix’s huge streaming catalog.

thetvdb.com – A massive open database that can be modified by anybody, that lists TV shows season, episode names and numbers. As well as show artwork (hand for a home theater).

instantpiechart.com – This site lets you make pie charts in a matter of seconds and easily include them in your project or web site.

A.V. Club – The AV club has well thought out reviews and interviews.

Not Always Right – The Customer is not ALWAYS right!
Metacrtic – Metacritic compiles reviews from respected critics and publications for movies, DVDs, music, television and games.
io9.com – Great Sci fi News.

TOPICAL:
Obama Declares Swine Flu a National Emergency – President Barack Obama declared the swine flu outbreak a national emergency, giving his health chief the power to let hospitals move emergency rooms offsite to speed treatment and protect non-infected patients.

VIDEO GAMES:
Some great stuff coming to the Xbox 360 – Facebook, Twitter, Last.fm, Netflix 1080p, and Zune features.
PS3 getting Netflix –  You’ll enable Netflix via an "instant" streaming, enabled via a Blu-ray disc.
Lazy Borderlands Review – With an 85 on Metacritic, the game seems to be a big hit with fans.

TECH:

Windows 7 switch Home to Ultimate – Handy little tool lets you switch your Windows 7 ISO from Home to Ultimate.

Kindle copy outsells hardcover Dan Brown book – "The Lost Symbol," outsold the hardcover version on the day it was released earlier this week.
