Inside the Ubuntu Rally

Was any work really getting done? Or was it all a big party? I had always been curious what one of these Ubuntu events was like.

Recently I had the good fortune of being invited to the Ubuntu Rally in New York City. We packed up our car and drove across the country to attend the event.

This is the first major company event since Canonical restructured, announced Ubuntu Gnome would be the future, and laid off many employees. How was the mood? Was any work really getting done? And what groundwork are they laying for Ubuntu 18.04, one of their most important releases ever.

As a longtime Linux and open source user/advocate, I was committed to getting answers to these questions. So I drove from the Pacific to the Atlantic to get them.

Trouble Comes to NYC

“Here Comes Trouble” I must have heard that a million times working in IT. But at the Ubuntu Rally I really earned it. We arrive in New York City, and hit the ground running. We meetup with the Ubuntu crew, Ikey from Solus, Daniel Foré from elementary and others!

Then I sneak out and do the tourist thing, and take the vlog to Times Square, Grand Central Station, and all over the streets of NYC.

Going to NYC for the Ubuntu Rally!

Just a quick update to tell you about some big news, we are going to New York. A first of a lifetime event for myself, and the vlog!

Canonical is holding a rather tight knit event. The Ubuntu Rally, taking place in New York City September 25th-29th, is a forward-thinking five day software hackathon attended by major software vendors, Ubuntu developers working at every level of the stack, and community contributors.

The Montana Fix // VLOG 48

Two families hit the road in their RVs to meet up in Bozeman Montana. This was one of those things we always talked about doing, but never got around to until now.

During our trip we hit a technical snag with our class A motorhome, and we attempt a fix.

I really enjoyed making this vlog, the Drone work is used sparingly, but really shines where it is used I think.

The Bozeman Hot Springs was a trip of a lifetime for our family, and created many great memories that will last a lifetime. I hope I can pass a little of that along to you in this video.

Tons of things happening right now, so I’m taking a few minutes to give you guys a quick update on some of my latest thoughts, and our recent Unplugged BBQ.

Spinning down Linux Action Show had a huge impact on me, and for the short term I ended up with a lot more work than I expected.

Having hustled through what I hope is the bulk of it, and getting things on the right track I’m off for a bit of family to recharge.

I’m packing up the motorhome and heading off to Montana with the family for a week, and there is lots of new things to work on when I get back!

We won’t call it luxury, but with everything we need onboard our motorhome, we can make the most out of free rest stops, truck stops for free boondocking, and make great time.
