Needs of the Few

  • Overall, a great story that feels like something you would see in a Star Trek episode, some great new maps that add to this mission’s environment, making it feel different. The only thing that could use improvement is gameplay, and to keep this a diplomatic mission, the only real thing the author could add is a puzzle, and less repeating of talking to tons of NPC’s. If you are mainly looking for story in your mission experience, this is a great one to check out.

New Segment: Talk Trek

Balance of Terror

  • 5:00 A lot of interesting setup. Showing the territory map, Spock giving the 411 and the shots of the crew listening in.
  • 14:00 Kirk takes input, even hostile input at that, and adjust his orders.
The Defector
  • Starts has a holodeck playtime between data and picard.
  • Powerful first on screen moment for the Romulan escape, I remember it feeling like a big deal back in the day.
  • One of my favorite ship flybys at 8:47 goes great with the “captain’s log”.
  • Asking data to keep a record of events is really clever.
  • At the 20 minute mark, the return back to the opening scene. A nice touch.
  • At the 22 minute mark, it’s a great Data learning to be human chat. Season 3 was great at this.
  • One worlds butcher, is another worlds hero. So true.
  • At the 38:40 One of the great, get us outta here moments, and the Romulans uncloak.
  • 42:26 Klinks decloak and screw the Romulans plan up. Loves it.
James Sloyan – Memory Alpha, the Star Trek Wiki
Face of the Enemy
  • The Tal Shiar appears to be quite the buracratic badass.
  • The most time we have ever spent on a Romulan ship?
  • As noted in the Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion, this episode marked the debut of Worf’s ponytail. He would retain this look for the rest of the series, throughout his tenure on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and all four Next Generation films. Hairstylist Joy Zapata and Michael Dorn had both lobbied for the change for some time. Zapata explained, “[Worf’s hair] used to remind me of a Klingon that had gone to the beauty salon; it looked like Donna Reed!”.

Gates of Sto’vo’kor is sponsoring a Klingon Foundry Mission Contest featuring the Ferengi. The best KDF mission will be selected and awarded a Ferengi D’Kora Marauder ship. The missions must be for the KDF faction, must have a maximum play time of 30 to 45 minutes, and must feature the Ferengi in some way. Check out the Gates of Sto’vo’kor website for the full announcement and the STO Forums to sign up. If you would like to air the audio during your show, we would appreciate it. https://www.gatesofstovokor.com/episodes/gosfoundrycontest.mp3

There is a KDF version as well … UFoP:Ter’jas Mor

And if the proper Easter Eggs are found and interacted with,
a dialog will be displayed with instructions on how to get any

Duty Officer Guide Part 2

  • Best Practices & Pro Tips For Running Duty Officer Missions

  • Trade in missions where you swap 5 lower quality doffs for 1 doff of the next quality level up have a small dilithium cost, check this before you complete the transaction.

  • Trade in NPCs offer you the chance to receive a doff of a specific species

  • Department Head / Shipboard assignments reflect each other currently which negates the need to zone into your ship to check every sector.

  • Unlocking repeatable assignments is crucial to efficiently gaining CXP for the tier 3 and tier 4 ranks where the targets are 50K adn 100K respectively.

  • If you pick up a rare assignment on your ship, consider posting that in the Doffjobs channel and inviting others to your bridge so that they can get that assignment too.

  • Check the list of “special” Duty Officers for rare and ultra rare doffs that you may want.

  • Dilithium Attainment Tips

  • In the center room of ESD there is an NPC who gives Doff missions. One of these is to turn in 3 contraband to gain 2, 000 dilithium ore on a 2 hr timer per character.

  • The KDF equivalent of this mission is located in The Great Hall in First City.

  • Recently the 24 hour cooldown on this mission  “disappeared”. It is unknown if that was intentional or simply a bug.

  • The KDF can pick up lots of Contraband from marauding assignments. Mailing those items to the FED characters on your account can allow you to run multiple version of this mission at the same time thus maximising your dilithium gains.

  • The 800 day veteran reward grants access to a new assignment at the academies which allows the veterans to refine an additional 1,000 Dilithium Ore above their 8,000 per day dilithium ore refinement cap.

  • Efficient Travel Tips

  • Sector Space travel is your constant enemy for Hardcore Doffing. Not only do your Bridge Officers constantly ask you to warp into wrong Sectors, lots of loading screens all the time… but if you Doff a lot, you do not want to spend half that time staring at your ship crawling slowly through sector space at Warp 10.

  • The Borg Engine for 5 EDC from the STF Vendor is the cheapest and STILL the fastest engine in STO.

  • The Omega Force Engine gives players the ability to use Slipstream twice as often. This is not listed on the tooltip but is easily verified in game.

  • Set your Drive Coil skill to at least 6, if not 9 for a solid base warp speed boost.

  • Diplomatic Immunity and Raiding Party buffs from other Players will also give you Sector Space speed gains. Players have been reported to reach speeds of Warp 40 in slipstream with all these Buffs stacked!

  • There is also a Personal Assignment that will buff your Drive Coil skill for one hour, make sure you have that one ready when you participate in the “Tour The Galaxy” Event (if you fly around Sector Space all the time you can just as reel in the free energy credits from that event too).

  • Additional Transwarps are always nice to have, but it has a cooldown timer so the Excelsior is not an ideal solution.

  • Astrometric scientist doffs on active space duty can reduce the cooldown of your transwarp to as little as 5 minutes.

  • The Odyssey cruisers also give you double the time in Slipstream mode.

  • That all cuts down on travel time, the more characters you play, the more important it will get to cut down on that.

  • You also will need to know where you want to go. Suricata’s Star Chart may help you with that, but the ingame map is fine too, just make sure to know your sector blocks and the sector borders within them.

  • Assignment Chains & Other Goodies

  • These are basically a series of Doff assignments that are linked together where you must complete one mission before unlocking the next*. When you reach the end of a chain there is often a special reward such as a rare or very rare duty officer, Mark XII Consoles, unique Food Items, Player Titles and all sorts of Items.

  • Mission completion is all that matters.  Success or failure is not considered.

  • The most important chain at the moment probably is the Colonial chain. There is one Colonial chain for every exploration cluster, it’s the hardest chain to complete but it also has the best rewards.

  • For every exploration cluster that you complete you will get one unique Rare Duty Officer and unlock a repeatable “support” assignment.

  • The unlocked support assignment will give you a Very Rare Duty Officer with the same traits as the Rare Duty Officer, but only on critical success so you might need to repeat it a few times to get lucky.

  • Once you complete the whole Colonial chain you will have gained 14 Rare and 14 Very Rare Duty Officers which is a great base roster to build upon.

  • The repeatable Support Mission will reward “Refugees”, which on their own seem rather worthless, but they can be turned in at “Asylum” Missions. Depending on the Refugee traits, you have a good chance to get a random high level DOff (not including the new Gamma Quadrant Races!).

  • You will need a lot of Colonists for these chains. 168 (per Character) to be precise, start collecting them whenever you can. If you got Energy Credits it’s a good idea to buy them on the Exchange as you need them.

  • Other than that there are “Resettle Colonists” assignments which will give you 5 Colonists every time, but it can only be started every 28 hours.

  • Colonists are stored separately from your DOff Roster in an extra Tab. That Tab can only hold 20 Colonists, so when you run out of space, take 5 of them and put them in a mail addressed to yourself.

  • You will need a certain amount of various the commodities. There is a Spreadsheet with all the Commodities you will need and the prices in the different places, cheapest are the Freighters that fly around Sector Space. If you follow the sheet you can save 238,700 Energy Credits (PER CHARACTER !).

  • If you place the purchased commodities in your Bank you will not have to open your replicator and scroll past all the food for every single assignment, which can get annoying real fast!

  • If you follow the “2 of each Profession” method on your DOff Roster you will run into problems on certain steps of the chain that require Technicians and Quartermasters, so it will be better keep more of those around until you are done with your Colonial Chains.

  • It is also noteworthy that Klingons can not enter Delta Volanis until they reach Marauding Rank 3 and Federation Players can not enter any of the Klingon Sectors until Diplomacy Rank 3. You can ask in the DOFFJOBS chat channel if someone can give you Diplomatic Immunity or Raiding Party.

  • The Consular Authority chain was released together with the Gamma Quadrant C-Store Packs. It is the “free in-game way” to get your hands on the new Duty Officers species like Bajorans, Cardassians, Wadi, Dosi, Karemma and so on. It is the only way to get Duty Officers with the new “resolve” Trait that is required for some assignments and gives you better chances for many of the new assignments that were added with the latest Duty Officer expansion. It does NOT include Jem’Hadar, Vorta, Tosk or Hunters, these seem to be only available through the C-Store Packs.

  • Biochemical Investigations: comes in 6 variants which each providing a different Gamma Quadrant commodity and completion rewards are special ground consumables. The assignment can be picked up from the DS9 zones.

  • Biogenic Weaponisation: a 2 part chain that unlocks a repeatable 45m assignment that grants elevated CXP rewards over other similar short duration assignments  i.e. 98 CXP. The initial  assignement can be picked up from Klingon Academy making it KDF only.

  • Children’s Toys: This 4 part assignment chain grants green, blue or purple MK XII random consoles upon overall completion. The first part gives you a “strange alien artifact” and this assignment  can be obtained in most of the Cardassian sectors. The remaining parts of the chain are then unlocked at the Science Officer inside your ship.

  • Colonisation: a 7 part chain which unlocks repeatable refugee and prisoner assignments in the exploration clusters. Critical success in those unlocked assignment can reward with a rare purple Doff. Each cluster offers a different purple Doff for a critical success. The initial assignment must be picked up in any of the exploration clusters.

  • Culinary Credentials: a 5 part chain which unlocks multiple repeatable assignments for elevated CXP rewards and overall completion unlocks the “Chef” and “Master Chef” titles. The initial assignment is picked up from within your ship.

  • Colonial Team: comes in 4 variants with 3 assignments in each aligned to the 4 Gamma Quadrant species (Karemma / Paradan / Dosi / Wadi). Completion unlocks high CXP assignments in the Zenas Expanse. The initial assignment can be picked up in the Cardassian sectors.

  • Consular Authority: a 4 part chain with 7 variants (Bajor / Karemma / Parada / Cardassia / Dosi / Ferasa / Wadi). Completion opens up a Doff exchange assignment where you can swap existing Doffs for one from the species variant you have completed. The initial assignment can be picked up in the Cardassian sectors.

  • Extreme Bartending: a 5 part chain where your bartender gets to show off some skills to unlock multiple repeatable assignments. The 4th part grants the “Bartender” title and the 5th grants the “Master Bartender” title. The initial assignment can be picked up aboard your ship.

  • Facility 4028 Fugitives: a 5 part chain which yields gamma quadrant commodities and rare gamma quadrant duty officers. The initial assignment can be picked up in the Regulus sector and sometimes in adjacent sectors.

  • Gaming Proficiency: a 4 part chain that unlocks the “Strategema Master” title upon completion. The initial mission can be picked up aboard your ship.

  • Ghosts Of The Jem’Hadar: a 10 part chain that unlocks many repeatable assignments and then provides a purple named Doff upon chain completion. The initial assignment can be picked up in the Cardassian sectors.

  • Project Chrysalis: a 6 part chain that unlocks a few repeatable missions and a purple doff upon completion. The initial assignment can be picked up from the Cardassian sectors.

  • Instigate Defection” assignments can be used to pick up doffs from the opposite faction. The assignment is picked up from…

  • Extricate Intelligence Asset” can be used to pick up doffs from the opposite faction. For FEDs the assignments can be picked up in Klingon bordering sectors and vice versa for the KDF.

  • Reclaim Assimilated Borg Drones” yields a green or blue doff and the assignment can be picked up in either the Sirius or Regulus sectors.

  • Investigate Temporal Anomaly” yields a purple bartender *(Guinan Doff) upon completion is is once per character only. The assignment can be picked up in exploration clusters, Beta Ursae, Eta Eridani and Omega Leonis so far. There may be other sectors too.

  • Combat Benefits With The Active Roster

  • Active Space Roster – some doffs provide boosts to your space abilities, cooldown reductions or “proc” effects when those doffs are put on active assignment.

  • Active Ground Roster – some doffs provide boosts to your ground abilities, cooldown reductions or “proc” effects when those doffs are put on active assignment.

  • Tactical

  • Conn Officer (Evasive Maneuvers) – cooldown reduction

Intro

  • Happy First Contact day to all STO players
  • Dan Stahl & Brandon hosted a Q&A in the RedAlert chat channel on First Contact Day
  • Utopia Planetia social zone introduced
  • Replica of the Phoenix Warp 1 craft made available as a space pet
  • New KDF mission released which is an homage to “Predator” in many ways

News

  • First Contact Day Q&A – Highlights:]
  • Gates Of Stovokor Interview with Daniel Stahl
  • They (KDF players) see the KDF as the Horde in WoW and wonder why it is doesn’t have its own zones with an entirely separate content track unto itself. The game was just not made to be that at launch. The only way we’ll ever get there is if we spin up an entirely separate team of content designers to go back and make a few years’ worth of content and release it as an expansion.
  • CBS believe that only around 20% of Star Trek fans would be interested in playing a Klingon character and Daniel Stahl has previously stated that 18% of STO players actively gaming with the KDF faction. That was believed to be too low a number to warrant a lot of development time on the faction due to a low return on investment. It is unlikely that the Romulans / Cardassians have a higher percentage of fandom and as such, does that mean that we will only get to see a third faction in STO if they add a separate development team with the goal of producing a paid expansion for a F2P title. Lord of the Rings Online is likely a good example of this sort of effort as they recently released a paid expansion called War In The North.
  • Link to the study Perpetual Entertainment Study
  • Would you be willing to pay for an expansion which would add KDF / Romulan / Cardassian faction content?

Duty Officer Guide Part 1

  • What is a Doff? Junior officers and crew on your starship.

  • When do we get Doffs? FED at lvl 8 and KDF at lvl 23

  • Doffs are essentially “trading cards” that you constantly swap for better ones

  • Doff Characteristics: Faction / Species / Quality / Rank / Department / Specialisation

  • Doff Traits: Each duty officer can have between 1 and 5 traits which each possibly affecting the outcome of any mission that Doff is assigned to e.g. Unruly send on a diplomacy mission

  • How many Doffs can you have? 100 default, 400 max using c-store purchases

  • 25 Duty Officer slots for 180 C-Store points (per character)

  • 100 Duty Officer slots for 580 C-Store points (per character)

  • Duty Officer assignments give item rewards and commendation XP

  • Commendation XP (CXP) has categories: Diplomacy (FED) / Marauding (KDF) / Science / Engineering / Military / Exploration / Espionage / Medical / Colonial / Trade / Development / Recruitment

  • Commendation XP allows you to achieve Commendation Ranks

  • Everyone starts off as Rank 0 in each CXP category

  • Rank 1 – 2.5K CXP

  • Rank 2 – 15K CXP

  • Rank 3 – 50K CXP

  • Rank 4 – 100K CXP

  • Rank 5 – not currently implemented but CXP can be gained up to 150K CXP currently.

  • Ranking up gives a character title, access to more missions in that specific category, a token to purchase a new duty officer for that rank (increases in quality as rank increases) and in special cases a new ability. Diplomacy / Marauding rank 4 allows each faction to enter the home sector of the other which provides access to Duty Officer missions in those sectors. Transwarps can also be gained from

  • How can you get additional Duty Officers? character ranks / recruitment missions / CXP ranking up / trade in missions / dilithium purchases / Doff assignment rewards / STF token vendor / c-store / EC exchange / FE – Facility 4028 /

  • Where can you find Doff Assignments? Sector tab / personal tab / social zones / inside your ship

  • Basics of the Duty Officer Assignment user interface

  • The button to activate the Doff interface is located under the mini-map

  • Overview tab
+ Assignments Summary gives you details on how many mission you are currently running
+ Duty Officer Summary show how many Doffs you have and where they are currently
+ Commendation Advancement is your master view of your CXP rank progress and rewards

  • Assignments tab includes red icons to indicate why you currently cannot take certain missions. This allows you an opportunity to correct those issues and pick up the assignment e.g. you need a duty officer not currently in your roster, you need some commodities
    + Current Sector
    + Personal
    + In Progress
    + Completed
    + Assignment Log
    + Assignment Chains

  • Duty Officers tab
+ Full details of every duty officer in your roster including bonuses for putting them on active assignment
+ Filter provided to allow you to focus on the specific Doffs you want to examine
+ Option provided to dismiss a Doff and be compensated in dilithium
+ Sections: Roster / Active Space / Active Ground / Sickbay / Brig / Passengers / Cargo Bay

  • Request Duty Officers tab
+ Purchase additional roster slots from the c-store
+ Purchase Doff packs from the c-store
+ Open any cadres you have and have them added to your roster
+ See your most recently added Doffs and filter through them as needed

  • Department Heads
+ Assign a first offcer and obtain missions for that Bridge Officer
    + Departments: Engineering / Operations / Science / Medical / Tactical / Security
+ These bridge officers will make suggestions on what Doffs to assign to missions which fall under their specialisations.
+ These suggestions are NOT always the best Doffs to assign and that will be covered in more detail during the advanced guide next week on STOked 119.

  • Basics of running a Duty Officer Assignment
    • Choose an assignment from a category that interests you
    • Read the assignment description to get an idea of the “story” involved
    • Take note of the “Time To Completion”
    • Examine the “Rewards” for this assignment
    • Use the “Chance of success” percentages and graph to gauge the expected outcome of the assignment based on the Doffs you choose to assign to it. This updates as you change Doffs.
    • The “Requires” section tells you how many Doffs are needed and the specific traits and specialisations that are required. The more of the good traits you have in your assigned Doffs, the higher you chances of success and possibly critical success will be. Failed missions sometimes result in Doff injuries and disasters result in dead white quality Doffs. Blue / Green / Purple doffs only take injuries from such failures. The only exception where higher than white quality DOffs “die” are when you assign them to “Execute For Incompetence” missions.
    • Some Doffs have an innate % boost to rewards provided e.g. 5 (green) / 10 (blue) / 20 (purple)
Next Week:
  • Assignment chains and the special rewards from them
  • Pro tips from Brooklyn Knight / Z3R0B4NG / Lucas Purcell

  • A little more insight from DStahl

EVERYONE else (the majority of the team) is working on stuff that you will not see until the next big update – Season 6. That is where you will see things like Fleet Advancement system, Starbases, new types of Fleet Only “fleet actions”, updated PVP, new Foundry features, and if we are lucky, maybe even some leaderboards. Oh and maybe some Tholians.

Ship Interior Functionality via the Doff System

– New NPCs on your Ship Interiors (and a few public maps) that offer two types of assignments: Fixed and Rotating
– Fixed NPC Assignments will include things like crafting hyposprays, regenerators and ship components.
– Rotating NPC Assignments will include a mix of existing Shipboard and Sector assignments, as well as newly-crafted unique assignments ONLY available on these NPCs.
– Many steps of different Assignment Chains have been moved to these NPCs, to ensure that players participating in the Doff system check their interior somewhat regularly.
– Rotating NPC Assignments will be different on different interiors. If you don’t like what your NPCs are offering, visit a friend’s interior instead.

Tactical View:

  • Dilithium Mining
  • Useful for lower level players without access to better dilithium missions e.g. STFs
  • Excellent environment with details such as low gravity “walking”
  • Beautiful D’Kora model hovering above the asteroid (JamJamz designed it)
  • Lack of profession specific aspects
    • Engineering: Ensuring heat dissipation during mining
    • Science: Regulating power level to ensure optimum laser cutting power
    • Tactical: Targetting dilithium veins effectively
  • Asteroid Mining Guide

Dilithium Gathering Tips:

  • -Multiple methods – casual & hardcore / low level & capped
  • -Dailies / Special Events / Doff Assignments / Dismissing Doffs
  • -Return on time investment is the key factor – dilithium per minute?
  • -Daily Lore Mission – 480 dilithium for FED & KDF (academy mission)
  • -Daily Foundry – 3 missions for 1440 (console missions expedite this)
  • -Daily Cluster Exploration – 1440 for 3 missions (fastest with 3 scans)
  • -Dilithium Mining Event – unsure of cap but seems to be 1K for 10 mins of play
  • -STFs – elites give 1100 for completion for 20 to 30 mins of play with loot possibilities
  • -Fleet Actions – 1440 dilithium each
  • -KDF Sorties – 960 for Sortie Alpha, 960 for Sortie Bravo both repeatable every 30 mins
  • -KDF “Path Of The Warrior” – wrapper mission for Sorties giving 2400 daily
  • –800 Day Vet Reward – unique doff assigment which increases daily refining cap
  • -STOwiki – dilithium mission guide

Ask Cryptic: March 2012 is Here
DStahl’s back
A handy thread explaining (in short) what the Foundry could expect to see in Season 6

STF Loot Bags Explained

When you successfully complete an STF, including the optional objectives, you will have two different loot bags provided –  the personal loot bag and the team loot bag. Obviously, the personal one is loot just for you and the team loot bag, which is obtained from successfully completing the optional objectives, is divided up using the Need or Greed system. The loot you get in those bags is taken from multiple loot tables in the following manner.

Personal Loot Bag:

  • Table A – always gives you every item every time which is EDCs, dilithium and a mystery box. This is your GUARANTEED reward for mission completion.
  • Table B – always gives you at least one item but can be more which includes Bind On Equip space & ground gear and also Borg Salvage. This means that you will always get something from this loot table but not necessarily the salvage drop.
  • Table C – this table contains the high end loot, the Borg tech drops. Everytime you successfully complete an STF the game decides if you should be offered an item from this table. It is 100% NOT GUARANTEED loot. You have a chance to get the tech drop and a pretty low one based on user feedback 1% or lower is suspected right now (unconfirmed). This “roll” by the game engine does not take into account how many STF runs you have done it simply flips a coin to see if you are to be offered a tech drop for this specific STF completion. It is the primary source of making players insane as this heavily gates access to MK XII equipment and sets.

So for each completion of an STF as a player I will get:

    • EDCs / dilithium / mystery box
    • 1 or more Bind On Equip space gear,  ground gear or borg salvage
    • a chance at getting a Borg tech drop (chance guaranteed, loot not so)

The second loot bag is a shared one across the team based on completing the optional objectives in any STF. It is constructed in a similar way to the personal loot bag but with some key differences.

  • only 1 loot table containing all of the items (does NOT include Borg tech drops, EVER)
  • usually 4 items from the loot table are offered as a reward to the team (can include salvage)

This shows that the lock boxes that were added to the loot system recently are actually included in a table that has nothing to do with the Borg Tech drops and their minuscule drop rate is therefore a separate issue. The information presented here is derived from a  – post made by Gozer.

Bugs That We Would Like Community Feedback For:

De-Teaming bug in STFs. Randomly during the STFs the team is disbanded forcing everyone to re-team. If there are KDF players involved, the FED players cannot invite them and vice versa effectively splitting the team. This seems to happen more frequently if the optional objective has failed.

STF Prototype (MK XII) Loot Problem. Over the course of the last two weeks it has become apparent that these are not dropping at all or the drop rate has been nerfed in some way. We would like to know if the community are seeing the same lack of loot as the Jupiter Force have identified.

Intro

  • 326 plays
  • 4.27 stars
  • New Mission ranking high on the top rated currently
  • Debut mission for the author making this a “Hello World” mission of sorts.

Story Murphy Story: 8.43 (5th)

  • Your ship is sent out to investigate an anomaly in the Badlands.
  • Upon discovering this anomaly, you learn it is a temporal anomaly, and low and behold a Cardie freighter is passing through the area, and despite your warnings to them, they continue to fly to it, until they stop right on top of it.
  • The Cardie ship then strangely explodes, and the crew with their captain Duvar launch their escape pods, and are pulled into this anomaly, and as they enter it, the timeline is immediately effected.
  • Being close to the anomaly however, you are unaffected, in the same way the Defiant was in the episode Past Tense, and it’s up to you to travel back in time and fix the timeline. Also, the Enterprise E during First Contact was protected from the changes in the timeline because of them being inside the temporal wake.
  • Upon passing through this temporal vortex into the past, you will engage Dominion ships, and you will shortly find out you are now smack dab in the middle of the Dominion War, specifically when the Federation was losing.
  • After a bunch of space combat against the Dominion, you are rescued by part of the 7th Fleet. The time in history you have come back to is also just before the destruction of the 7th fleet. In a Deep Space 9 episode, this event is only just mentioned by Bashir to Sisko, when he reports only 14 ships out of the 112 ships made it back from the fight. This author is now going to have you experience this event.
  • The main character that you will be hunting down in this mission is Duvar, the Cardassian Freighter captain who is the reason why you’ve traveled back in time. Now that he is in the past during the Dominion War, he sees this as a chance to change events, and prevent the Cardassian and Dominion’s defeat in this war. Duvar just has dialogue that flows nicely, and when talking to this character, he feels like the villain. There is one line that he uses after he tells you he plans on changing the timeline, where he replies saying that what he’s doing is justice. The way he says that makes you feel that he believes what he is doing is right, from his perspective, and that it’s up to him to bring the Cardassian Union back, by making sure they win this war.

Technical Murphy   Tech: 6.93 (7th)

  • Maps – very heavy customisation makes me believe that this new author spent a huge amount of development time crafting the environments. The fleet amassed around the starbase has almost every ship individually named and skinned.
  • Transitions – I found some of the maps to be very underutilised leading to unwarranted zoning when the author could have placed more to do within each map and avoid that zoning.

Ooiue

  • Creativity – the space groups are well chosen and will give a strong fight for most players while better equipped players can breeze through the mission while enjoying the story.

Gameplay Ooiue Gameplay: 7.46 (3rd)

  • Heavy Space Combat
    • Especially when teamed up in a group (to the point where players can actually lag out because there is so much going on with the combat).
    • Battles range from a few ships in a minor skirmish to full fledged fleet action combatants
    • Due to story purposes, the fleet battles are split up into at least 3 zones (flank, rear and centre) where the player has to assist the 7th in engaging the extremely large Dominion force
      • A zoning issue that can be annoying but shows the overall scale of the battle
  • Space Gameplay was all in all straight forward
    • Largly dictated by the Space Combat
    • Standard Reach markers and interactable objects present
      • Some interactions used as triggers for dialogue boxes
    • Nothing really that special
  • Ground Combat was very involved and had its own specialised twists
    • Lots of cover using crates and barriers for the player and NPC’s to take cover behind
      • Makes Ground combat as a whole very strategic and needing the player to adapt tactics around where the NPC groups are placed
      • Because the Dominion forces are using Polaron weapons, healing abilities will suffer majorly, don’t go blundering into the fight expecting to win
  • Ground Gameplay was also straight forward
    • Normal reach markers
    • Interactable objects
    • NPC’s to speak to
    • Nothing special
  • Minor Puzzle during the mission whereupon the player must remember the assigned cargo manifests to the assigned ships
    • Dialogue Based Puzzle
      • Two seperate consoles for the puzzle
        • One for Assigned Manifests
        • The other for the actual dialogue puzzle
      • If an option is selected incorrectly, then the entire puzzle starts again

Summary Murphy Overall:  7.63 (5th)

    • All things considered, this is an excellent debut mission.
    • The author shows amazing attention to detail which can only produce better missions in the future once their technical proficiency is at the same level.
    • Interesting use of a cliffhanger as it stops the player in their tracks just as they are about to get to grips with the bad guy. Some folks will complain about the execution of this technique.
    • New Author Tips – avoid pointless maps, the warp in animation loops and is immersion breaking, beware using customisation to make up for not adding more gameplay to your maps and keep up the level of detail used in the plot as it can sometimes be the difference maker for a mission.
