ANGELA: This is Women’s Tech Radio.
PAIGE: A show on the Jupiter Broadcasting Network interviewing interesting women in technology. Exploring their roles and how they are successful in technology. I’m Paige.
ANGELA: And I”m Angela. Are you sure about that Paige?
PAIGE: Today I’m not. It’s been a long day at the conference here.
ANGELA: Yes.
PAIGE: So, we are live here at Linux Fest Northwest. And we got to pull some awesome people off the floor to do interviews today.

PAIGE: So, we’re here in the Make — What’s the name of your trailer?
DIANE: It’s Get Makered.
PAIGE: Get Makered.
DIANE: Yes.
PAIGE: And Angela is going to get 3D scanned for a 3D selfie.
ANGELA: Yep, Woo Hoo.
DIANE: I’m Diane Muller.
PAIGE: And this is Diane Muller and she is here — there — this is a home built awesome rig and their own scanning solution. They’ve got their own 3D platform, which they’re going to throw up on GitHub so other people can make.
ANGELA: Awesome.
PAIGE: And some other cool stuff. And I think Diane is going to walk us through the process.
DIANE: Yeah, so what I’ve done is, I belong to a group called the COast Makers, which is up in the sunshine coast in beautiful British Columbia, and we’re hosting our first maker fair in Gibson’s BC on May 31st, so we invite you all to come up across the border. We’re here in Billingham at Linux Fest Northwest. This is our maiden voyage of the GetMakered trailer. What we have is a human sized turntable that we built together, a collaboration design that is a very compact, low elevation, so that we can get people in, in the trailer, which is only 6’2”, so no standing up on this. It was designed to hold around 200 to 250 pounds. It’s got an old electric wheelchair motor in it, and it’s got a V-belt fan belt that’s 77 inches long, and it’s on top of a lazy Susan thing. The design we’ll put up on GitHub under GetMakered at some point. We haven’t quite done it. It’s all open sourced stuff. And then we’ve taken an XBox Kinect scanner here and, unfortunately we’re at Linux Fest, but XBox is a Linux thing. So, we have lovingly gotten a Windows laptop with a NVidia card in it, and using some software from a company called Skinect that connects to the XBox and allows us to use it and import 3D images. So, what I’m going to do is I’m going to turn on the turntable here, very slowly.
PAIGE: Time for a ride.
DIANE: And she’s going to go around really slowly. ANd then the scanner. I’m going to just set it far enough back so that it turns green on the screen here and when I start counting, you have to sit very still starting in one, two, three, there you go. And it’s going to create a Hulk-like image for you, for me to look at in green and capture pretty much all of you. Now, people with curly hair, there’s shadows and things like that. So, those kinds of things leave holes in the mesh. The top of the head, since the scanner is down here, I will have to, once we get a good scan of the rest of her get the top of her head, otherwise she’ll have a hole in her head. She’ll have a hole under her chin, because there’s a shadow under the chin. So, I’ll try and shave underneath with the Kinect by hand. So, that’s really about — there’s sort of four stages to getting a really good thing that you can print out on the Tinkerine printer. Which Tinkerine is a Vancouver based 3D printing company. They manufacture these things. They have great out of the box experience and they’re really road worthy, so I can take it to workshops and if it bounces a little bit it still prints nice, and it’s great. So, in order to get to the point where we’re doing something like the one that we just printed of someone we scanned yesterday, we have to clean it. So, the holes that I talked about under the chin or in the curly hair have to get cleaned. And you can use software like MeshLabs and Blender, which are nice open sourced projects. Tinkerine has Tinkerine studio, which is the next stage. So, after scanning and cleaning, you have to slice it. So every model has to get sliced so that the printer knows what layer to lay down on the printer. And Tinkerine studio that I use, and that is a free download from Tinkerine. So, we slice it. The first scanning creates a .STL file, which you can use with any 3D software, AutoCAD TInkerCAD. All the stuff will import the STL file. And that’s what we’re giving people today here. And then, you convert it in Tinkerine Studio to their .G format and throw it on the SD card and 42 minutes later comes out a little tiny, I think it’s 40 millimeter high bust of the person. And so, what we’re trying to do here is create a really unintimidating, obviously, experience of people being able to do this stuff. And then we’ll teach people that there’s more to 3D printing than downloading a rubber duck or something off of Thingiverse and just printing it. What we’re trying to do is teach people the skills to create art objects, to create interesting fun things. And now, I’m going to scan the top of your head, so don’t move. And since I’ve talked this long, we usually don’t send you around that often.
PAIGE: Angela is super inpatient.
ANGELA: Well, I think I should have chosen a different pose.
DIANE: Different pose.
ANGELA: Because it’s an upper angel, which is not flattering (unintelligible).
DIANE: All right, so I’m going to stop you turning around and let you get off while that renders that.
ANGELA: Okay.
DIANE: And there we go. And so, you will have a few holes in your head.
ANGELA: Okay.
DIANE: If you write your name and email down I’ll send you the .STL file. This is really all about teaching people how to use 3D printers. My prediction is, in another year or two things like this are going to be like having a microwave in your house.
PAIGE: Yeah, totally.
DIANE: But the interesting thing about microwaves is I really don’t like anything you can cook in a microwave other than popcorn. And that’s the thing about 3D printers, is that if you really want to learn how to use them and do interesting creative things, you have to learn more than how to touch a button and print something you downloaded from Thingiverse. You need to learn how to conceptualize things in 3D software like TinkerCAD or AutoCAD or lots of different other project page has tons of open source tools; MeshLab, Blender that I mentioned already. But, you really have to start thinking about how can you make your own stamp on the rubber duck that you can download from Thingiverse. Or, if you downloaded eyeglasses or something like that, how can you make those eyeglasses your own. And in order to do that you have to start using some software and learning some skills to put the GetMakered logo on the rubber duck so it’s your rubber duck. Or turn the rubber duck into a mallard or a goose or morph it into a superhero. And those are the kind of skills that we’re really interested in making people aware of and teaching the basics of. And we’re going to be here all day today at Linux Fest. We’re going to be at the Maker Fair on the Sunshine Coast on May 31st. The beginning of June there’s a mini-Maker Fair in Vancouver BC. PAIGE: We just got scanned inside. Angela got a 3D self here at your Get Makered. I was just wondering if you could tell us a little bit about how you got into this, because we know that your vision, we heard from inside, is to get people more aware of the tools and the trade of 3D printing. But, what got you into it?
LAURIE:: Yeah, because my wife and I are both really technical, but I come from the web design and marketing side. So, originally I was kind of going, oh it sounds so technical and I couldn’t really get into it, but as soon as we got a printer and I started looking on Thingiverse, it was like oh now I’m really going to be doing this thing. And that got me into — I got my first kit to do steampunk glasses with the trinket array inside. We have two daughters, so we’re really hoping that, especially the 14 year old, that she gets really interested in things like this. We come from a town of 30,000 people, our little region, so they’re still learning Powerpoint in high school. That’s their computer training.
PAIGE: Yeah, that’s not exciting.
LAURIE: No. No. So, that’s the — for their standpoint, it’s like oh can we stop hearing about the trailer, because we just finished the trailer. Like, Thursday night we were putting in the floor. We had to take it right down to the aluminium to get it into good shape.
PAIGE: Good timing, huh?
DIANE: Yeah.
PAIGE: So, this is something we’ve actually talked a bunch about with people here is like the different skidding involved in technology today. It’s really cool, because there’s this nice intersect where you can see things happening. We talked with one girl about robotics and how robotics has that kind of component where as a creative person you can still be excited about technology, because as soon as you program a little bit the robot does something. And I think 3D printing, would you say, is kind of in the same vein where you really get to see results?
LAURIE: Definitely. ANd I love the idea that it’s not as — what Diane is talking about. You can go and you can get a diagram to print something, but I think a lot of people, to keep up with the development curve, the idea of thinking spaciously in a three dimensional space, I like that sort of brain stretched and taking away some of the fetters around design, because I come from a totally 2-D world. ANd so, moving into 3D, I didn’t do the 3D graphics or anything. I kind of find them Kitchy. But, when you’re actually making something three dimensional, that’s really fun. And I love how much people collaborate. You know, we’re part of a very small Makers group and we just got designated for Sunshine Coast Maker Fair, our first Mini-Maker fair is on the 31st. And everybody helped in the trailer, so they get to take it out too. So, if the robotics guy wants to go and do workshop at a school, he can just come and get the trailer.
PAIGE: And it seems like you guys really have a nice dedication to real, true open source in the community there.
LAURIE: Yeah, and the sharing. We’re going to put the pedestal, the turntable into GitHub so people can build their own. You know, it was just problem solving.
PAIGE: Yeah.
LAURIE: We had a guy who had a new CNC machine and another guy was like, can we find a motor for this? And he brought four over and we tested them all. I was a bit bored on that day, I’ve got to say, watching the CNC machine. They’re all like salivating. I’m going, I don’t get it.
PAIGE: yeah, it takes a certain kind. I love a CNC machine, but precision is my thing. So, what software did you start to use to get involved with modeling this stuff. What was your 3D software choice?
LAURIE: It would be the Skintech that comes with this. Taking it up into places that MeshLabs and doing some tidying. We helped a friend of ours. He and his daughter play Minecraft and so we did a scan of him and he took it and embedded it somewhere in MInecraft. And they play every Saturday. So, one Saturday she’s going to find him at the entrance to a building.
PAIGE: Oh, that’s awesome. Very fun.
LAURIE: Yeah, I love stuff like that.
PAIGE: I didn’t even think that that game can kind of combine it, where it can go back into digital art. It doesn’t have to come out and be 3D.
LAURIE: Yes.
PAIGE: Well, physical 3D. Very cool. Is there anything else that I haven’t asked you that I should?
LAURIE: Oh, I have a very lofty title. I am teh GetMakered wrangler.
PAIGE: Wrangler, yes.
LAURIE: So, I had to learn how to drive the trailer, and I’m still learning how to back up. There was nobody here to watch my debacle of parking this morning.
PAIGE: Well, you’ve got to talk to your Make space and get the backup cameras put on this thing. It will help a lot.
LAURIE: Yeah.
PAIGE: Well, this is super awesome and we look forward to kind of following you guys in your journey, and keep in touch.

Microsoft Reveals Windows Holographic, An Augmented Reality User Interface For The World

HoloLens is completely wireless, and features see-through lenses, spatial sound and advanced sensors. It’s designed to be a self-contained unit, and it has its own custom CPU and new Holographic Processing Unit (HPU) to work. It doesn’t even require a phone or computer to connect to wirelessly to work, and is meant to be completely independent.

HoloLens is Microsoft’s take on augmented reality

According to Redmond’s Alex Kipman, Holographic applications are Windows 10 universal apps so developers will be able to release them across a wide range of devices. The platform works in concert with the newly unveiled HoloLens headset that allows interaction between the physical and digital worlds. The outfit showed this all off with a live demo of an app dubbed HoloStudio wherein an employee built a quadrocopter onstage by pointing her finger and issuing voice commands like “mirror” and “copy.” It all seemed pretty natural, actually. Kipman likened it to “print preview for 3D printing” and then pulled a 3D-printed version of the UFO-like quadrocopter seemingly out of his back pocket to show that it’s more than just a concept — it’s a reality.

Windows 10 hands-on: Microsoft got it right this time

It’s snappy and fast in a way that some doubters don’t believe Windows can be — but more importantly, everything feels faster because there are just fewer concepts to juggle in your head when you are navigating around.

Microsoft has essentially made the distinction between desktop apps and “Modern” apps (or whatever we’re calling them these days) invisible to the end user. You can switch between them seamlessly and manage them either snapped to half or full screen or windowed. Basically, everything is just a window, and it’s great.


Then there’s Cortana, which is still not fully complete on the build that we say but nevertheless worked quickly to launch apps and search the computer. Microsoft really wants you to use it (her?), dedicating a big spot on the status bar for a button or a text entry field (depending on the mode you’re in). We were only able to get Cortana’s voice search to work haltingly, about one out of every five tries.

Exclusive: The hottest smartwatch of CES isn’t running Android Wear — it’s Open webOS | Android Central

We tracked down the Audi/LG watch — still officially nameless, by the way — in Las Vegas today, and we can exclusively reveal that it’s not running Android Wear as originally believed. In fact, it’s packing completely different software based on LG’s Open webOS.

While the primary purpose of the tablet is entertainment for your rear passengers, the Audi Tablet also controls most of the car’s electronic functions. Passengers in the Q7 can have a look at the current route via a map app and can even set a new waypoint and pass it to the main stack in the front via WiFi. Music choices, media access, speed and even data showing if your driver has been keeping up with the maintenance are all on tap. Charging and a serial port that interfaces with the car’s CANBus — for communication with the auto’s systems — are on the back of the device and a standard micro-USB port and headphone jack are, too

The router in question is the D-Link AC3200 Ultra Wi-Fi Router, and make no mistake: as these things go it’s more than solid. Six antennas, support for the latest 802.11 protocols, and speeds up to 3.2Gbps. And this is just one of D-Link’s new Ultra series (it’ll be available on Newegg tomorrow for $309.99).

But mostly it just looks bonkers.

MakerBot makes 3D printing more realistic with metal, wood and stone – CNET

MakerBot announced Tuesday here at the 2015 International CES that it’s using new PLA Composite Filaments made with composites of real metal, stone and wood. Basically, these materials, in powder form, are mixed with regular PLA filament to create a new special type of filament. As the result, the printed objects will provide more of the look and certain characteristics of the materials being used.

For example, an object printed using metal PLA filament can be magnetized and is heavier than the same object printed using regular pure-plastic PLA filaments.

In order to print the new materials, however, a new extruder is needed for each material type. The good news is all MakerBot’s fifth-generation 3D printers support a Smart Extruder, which can be easily swapped out.

FBI Director: Sony’s ‘Sloppy’ North Korean Hackers Revealed Their IP Addresses | WIRED

Speaking at a Fordham Law School cybersecurity conference Wednesday, Comey said that he has “very high confidence” in the FBI’s attribution of the attack to North Korea. And he named several of the sources of his evidence, including a “behavioral analysis unit” of FBI experts trained to psychologically analyze foes based on their writings and actions. He also said that the FBI compared the Sony attack with their own “red team” simulations to determine how the attack could have occurred. And perhaps most importantly, Comey now says that the hackers in the attack failed on multiple occasions to use the proxy servers that bounce their Internet connection through an obfuscating computer somewhere else in the world, revealing IP addresses that tied them to North Koreans.

Hewlett-Packard Plans to Break in Two – WSJ

Hewlett-Packard plans to separate its personal-computer and printer businesses from its corporate hardware and services operations, the latest attempt by the technology company to improve its fortunes by breaking itself in two.

The company intends to announce the move on Monday, people familiar with the plan said. It is expected to make the split through a tax-free distribution of shares to stockholders next year, said one of the people.

If the division goes off as planned, it would give rise to two publicly traded companies, each with more than $50 billion in annual revenue.


The impending move, first reported Sunday by The Wall Street Journal, set off a round of speculation in the industry about whether the separation could lead to more deal making.


In 2012, under current H-P Chief Executive Meg Whitman, the company reorganized itself to combine the PC business with its more profitable printer operation, helping pave the way for the current plan.


Ms. Whitman is slated to be chairman of the PC and printer business, to be known as HP Inc., and CEO of the other company, to be called Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, said one of the people familiar with the plan. Current lead independent director
Patricia Russo will be chairman of the enterprise company, while Dion Weisler,
an executive in the PC and printer operation, is to be CEO of that business, this person said.

Hacked Screenshots Show Friend-To-Friend Payments Feature Hidden In Facebook Messenger | TechCrunch

Facebook Messenger is all set up to allow friends to send each other money. All Facebook has to do is turn on the feature, according to screenshots and video taken using iOS app exploration developer tool Cycript by Stanford computer science student Andrew Aude.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on the company’s Q2 earnings call that “over time there will be some overlap between [Messenger] and payments. […] The payments piece will be a part of what will help drive the overall success and help people share with each other and interact with businesses.” However, he urged Wall Street not to get too foamy at the mouth because it may be awhile since “there’s so much groundwork for us to do.”

He urged analysts and investors to revise their estimates of Facebook’s revenue if they expected this to come quickly. “To the extent that your models or anything reflect that we might be doing that, I strongly encourage you to adjust that, because we’re not going to. We’re going to take the time to do this in the way that is going to be right over multiple years” Zuckerberg concluded.

Bill Gates: Bitcoin Is ‘Better Than Currency’

After long remaining mostly mum on Bitcoin, Microsoft’s co-founder Bill Gates has spoken. At a financial-services industry conference in Boston, he threw his weight behind the controversial crypto currency. Well, at least as a low-cost payments solution. … “Bitcoin is exciting because it shows how cheap it can be,” he told Erik Schatzker during a Bloomberg TV’s Smart Street show interview yesterday (video). “Bitcoin is better than currency in that you don’t have to be physically in the same place and, of course, for large transactions, currency can get pretty inconvenient.” … While he seems relatively bullish on how inexpensive transacting in Bitcoin can be, Gates isn’t singing the praises of its anonymity. The billionaire alluded in an oblique, somewhat rambling fashion to some of the more nefarious anonymous uses associated with Bitcoin.

The conversation then switched to new Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and whether this is something the Windows maker should be focusing on, and how Gates feels the new man in charge is doing in his job. Although Gates stated that he’s “very happy with what he’s doing,” curiously he went on to say that he believes the company needs to make Microsoft Office dramatically better. We’re not sure exactly what that means, but Gates was very animated about it, and he’s apparently making sure the company heeds this advice.


BG: Certainly, Microsoft should do as well or better, but of all the things Microsoft needs to do in terms of making people more productive in their work, helping them communicate in new ways. It’s a long list of opportunities Microsoft has to innovate, and taking Office and making it dramatically better would be really high on the list, that’s the kind of thing that I’m trying to make sure they move fast on. I’m very happy with what he’s doing. I see a new sense of energy. There’s a lot of opportunity there. Some things the company isn’t the leader on, and he sees he needs to change that.

US Navy Develops Robot Boat Swarm To Overwhelm Enemies

“Jeremy Hsu reports that the US Navy has been testing a large-scale swarm of autonomous boats designed to overwhelm enemies. In the test, large ship that the Navy sometimes calls a high-value unit, HVU, is making its way down the river’s thalweg, escorted by 13 small guard boats. Between them, they carry a variety of payloads, loud speakers and flashing lights, a .50-caliber machine gun and a microwave direct energy weapon or heat ray. Detecting the enemy vessel with radar and infrared sensors, they perform a series of maneuvers to encircle the craft, coming close enough to the boat to engage it and near enough to one another to seal off any potential escape or access to the ship they are guarding. They blast warnings via loudspeaker and flash their lights. The HVU is now free to safely move away.


Rear Adm. Matthew Klunder, chief of the Office of Naval Research (ONR), points out that a maneuver that required 40 people had just dropped down to just one. “Think about it as replicating the functions that a human boat pilot would do. We’ve taken that capability and extended it to multiple [unmanned surface vehicles] operating together within that, we’ve designed team behaviors,” says Robert Brizzolara. The timing of the briefing happens to coincide with the 14-year anniversary of the bombing of the USS Cole off the coast of Yemen that killed 17 sailors. It’s an anniversary that Klunder observes with a unique sense of responsibility. “If we had this capability there on that day. We could have saved that ship. I never want to see the USS Cole happen again.”

I’m emailing you as I know I have a better chance of this being read than if I had sent this to Chris.

I live in the UK and I watch most of your shows. I recently started using the Pocket Casts android app (as recommended by Chris on a previous episode of the Faux) to consume the audio only shows from JB. I’ve noticed something strange which only seems to affect the Linux Unplugged show. For some reason each week the first 8 to 9 minutes of the show played through this app is actually the last 9 mins of the show. After this 8 to 9 mins period the beginning of the show is played and the rest of the show plays normally. I thought at first this may be a one off, but no, every week Linux Unplugged has this problem on the Pocket Casts app.

I wondered if this was something Chris could check out.

Apple and IBM Team Up For Major Enterprise Mobility Partnership

IBM will begin selling iOS devices to its corporate customers and will also create more than 100 industry-specific native apps that are built from the ground up for the iPhone and the iPad. IBM will provide cloud services optimized for iOS as well, with capabilities like device management, security, analytics, and mobile integration.

According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, Apple began speaking with IBM a couple of years ago about possible partnerships, and the enterprise arena is where the two companies felt they could come together. “It takes the best of Apple and the best of IBM and it puts those together,” he said. “There’s no overlap, no competition, they’re totally complementary, and more than anything, it focuses on the enterprise customer.”

IBM’s first apps, tailored specifically to various industries like retail, healthcare, banking, travel, transportation, and more, will be coming this fall, with additional apps following in 2015. The company also has plans to roll out its MobileFirst Platform for iOS, with benefits like analytics, cloud storage, fleet-scale device management, a private app catalog, and data and transaction security services.


Google+ rescinds real-name mandate

In an anonymously written Google+ post, the company explained the reversal saying that while the former policy “helped create a community made up of real people,” it also reduced the participation of people who were not comfortable using their real names on the social network. As Google tied Google+ deeper into many of its services, including YouTube comments and its user accounts, the policy became an increasingly divisive issue.

At the time of Google+’s launch, Chief Executive Eric Schmidt supported the move by telling CNBC, “If you have something that you don’t want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn’t be doing it in the first place.”

Vic Gundotra, the former Google+ chief, staunchly defended the social network but he left the company earlier this year. At the time of Google+’s launch, he likened the restriction to a restaurant that “doesn’t allow people who aren’t wearing shirts to enter.”

Unity Looking To Expand Linux Game Pad Support In Unity 5

Unity Linux developer Levi Bard has reached out to ask the community for help in gathering a comprehensive list of game pad mappings.

Unity 5 will be supporting SDL style mappings, which should make it easier for developers to make use of existing work that’s out there in the community. It will also be supporting SDL_GAMECONTROLLERCONFIG, which amongst other things is used by Steam Big Picture mode to communicate its game pad bindings to games.

3D-printed cadavers revolutionise anatomical education – CNET

The kit consists of all the major body parts required to learn the anatomy of the limbs, chest, abdomen, head and neck — all without containing any actual human body parts.

The 3D Printed Anatomy Series is created from real humans. First, the team performed scans, either X-ray CT scans or surface scans. These scans are then used to create a printable 3D model of the body parts, which are then sent to a high-resolution 3D printer and printed either in full colour in a plaster-like powder or plastic.

Japanese artist cuffed for disseminating 3D ladyparts files • The Register

A Japanese artist has been arrested for disseminating “3D printable design files” of her own genitalia, 3DPrint.com reports.

Megumi Igarashi, 42, was cuffed by Tokyo Metropolitan Police for allegedly supplying virtual ladyparts via email to a “30-year-old man in Kagawa Prefecture” and “many others” back in March.

Igarashi’s ultimate aim is to make the vagina more “casual” in a country where it’s considered bad form to even mention ladies’ inner sanctums.

REVIEW:  Moon Base Alpha

* Not a full game, just a “proof of concept” — a tech demo, of sorts, meant to show some of the concepts & mechanics behind NASA’s upcoming MMORPG, “Astronaut:  Moon, Mars and Beyond” (no release date published)

* Basically, you walk around and fix up a base on the Moon that’s been hit by an asteroid.
* You perform a number of simple tasks basically consisting of “pick up a tool, click on a thingie, and wait.”
* During these interactions, you can try and complete a mini-game to shave seconds off the wait time.
– Controls during these mini-games are so soupy that I was only able to complete about 10% of them.  Done on purpose?
* The goal:  Repair the base in the fastest time possible, compare your score against other Leaderboards.
* You can cooperate with others to complete the task faster, but the matchmaking service doesn’t seem to work very well (I could find no other matches being played anywhere, had to create my own.  There is an OFFLINE mode if you want to try it solo.)

* It’s more fun to just drive around and crash into things in your moon buggy, than it is to complete the mission.
