Black market Blackphones get sent a kill message that bricks them [Updated] | Ars Technica

A reader in Germany contacted Ars after the update “bricked” his phone, which he had purchased through eBay. “The Blackphone 2 I’ve received came in retail packaging and looks just like the one that you guys reviewed,” the reader told Ars. “It worked up to Silent OS 3.0.7 Silent OS, [but] 3.0.8 seems to intentionally brick the baseband on some devices.”

Re: RAID56 status?

I’d like to update the wiki to “More and more RAID5/6 bugs are found” 🙂

OK, no kidding, at least we did exposed several new bugs, and reports
already exists for a while in mail list.

Some examples are:

1) RAID5/6 scrub will repair data while corrupting parity
Quite ironic, repairing is just changing one corruption to
   another.

2) RAID5/6 scrub can report false alerts on csum error

3) Dev-replace cancel sometimes can cause kernel panic.

And if we find more bugs, I’m not surprised at all.

So, if really want to use RAID5/6, please use soft raid, then build
single volume btrfs on it.

I’m seriously considering to re-implement btrfs RAID5/6 using device
mapper, which is tried and true.

Building a local Steam caching server to ease the bandwidth blues | Ars Technica

SteamPipe is used to deliver what the client needs, be it a whole game or just an update, in roughly megabyte-size chunks. (Chunking like this allows developers to publish updates without having to push a whole new game package—they just invalidate old chunks and upload new ones.) As Valve points out on the SteamPipe developer community page, SteamPipe uses plain ol’ HTTP rather than a proprietary protocol. And that gives us the opportunity to stick our fingers into the process and mess with it.
How things will work with our Steam caching server if what we want isn’t in cache.

‘Venom’ Security Vulnerability Threatens Most Datacenters

A new vulnerability found in open source virtualization software QEMU, which is run on hardware in datacenters around the world (CVE-2015-3456). “The cause is a widely-ignored, legacy virtual floppy disk controller that, if sent specially crafted code, can crash the entire hypervisor. That can allow a hacker to break out of their own virtual machine to access other machines — including those owned by other people or companies.” The vulnerable code is used in Xen, KVM, and VirtualBox, while VMware, Hyper-V, and Bochs are unaffected. “Dan Kaminsky, a veteran security expert and researcher, said in an email that the bug went unnoticed for more than a decade because almost nobody looked at the legacy disk drive system, which happens to be in almost every virtualization software.” The vulnerability has been dubbed “Venom,” for “Virtualized Environment Neglected Operations Manipulation.”

Shield: NVIDIA’s $200 gaming-focused Android TV set-top box

NVIDIA’s calling Shield the “world’s first 4K Android TV” — it’s able to both stream and locally run 4K content to your fawncy 4K television. How does it do that? It uses a bleeding edge X1 chip — the most powerful mobile processor NVIDIA’s made to date.

It’s going to push that 4K content via HDMI out back, and pull down streamed 4K content via Gigabit Ethernet. Need some extra storage? You might, as it’s only got 16GB of internal stores. Good news: It’s got a microSD expansion port and two USB 3.0 ports for an external HDD. You’ll need some extra storage with all those huge video files.

The new Pebble smartwatch is now the most-funded project in Kickstarter history – Quartz

In one week, Pebble’s new Time smartwatch has become the most “funded” project in Kickstarter history, approaching $14 million in pre-orders. The watch project generated more than $9 million in pre-orders on its first day alone, and has slowly been making its way up the chart all week.

What may have boosted it: Pebble announced today that it will also be producing a more expensive “Steel” version of the watch. Within a few hours, the Pebble Time broke the record, dethroning the Coolest Cooler, a cooler that has a built-in blender and speakers.

Google+ is about to be broken up – Mar. 2, 2015

The search giant’s tepidly embraced social network is going to reorganize around its two standout products — photos and hangouts — as well as a newly named social feed called “streams,” Google’s (GOOGL, Tech30) product chief Sundar Pichai said at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona,

Pichai didn’t give a timeline for when Google+ will be rebranded. A spokesman for Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Bradley Horowitz Is Now Running Google+ | TechCrunch

Horowitz has confirmed our reporting in a carefully worded Google+ update that does not mention Hangouts, or even Google+ by name, but instead refers to Photos and Streams. This points to the idea of Google+ being split into dedicated services, two of which Horowitz will oversee:

“Just wanted to confirm that the rumors are true — I’m excited to be running Google’s Photos and Streams products! It’s important to me that these changes are properly understood to be positive improvements to both our products and how they reach users.”

Did Google+ fail? According to that message, perhaps,” one former Google+ employee told me recently. “But that’s not the relevant question: Is Google in a better position today to provide identity services across products? Yes.”

Steam Is Getting A Massive Overhaul

The revision—which Valve is calling the Steam Discovery Update and which goes live today—will implement a number of big changes including a revamped recommendations system, a queue in which you can swipe through new games based on what you’ve played and liked before, and a new program called Steam Curators that will allow anyone to take the role of tastemaker, recommending games to the public and accumulating followers based on their tastes.

We have made great efforts to increase the number of titles we can publish on Steam, which means more choices for customers,” Valve UI designer Alden Kroll said in a press release. “This update introduces multiple features and functionality to help customers explore Steam’s growing catalog and find the games they are most interested in playing.”

iOS 8 Users Report Slow Wi-Fi, Battery Drains | News & Opinion

Wi-Fi woes were not the only thing plaguing iOS 8 users. Others reported battery-drain issues. “My battery drains very fast (100 percent to zero in about 4 hours with minimal usage), started happening right after I upgraded to iOS 8. Issue started happening both on my iPhone 5S and on my iPad Air after iOS 8 upgrade,” one user wrote.

Feds say Bitcoin miner maker Butterfly Labs ran “systematic deception” | Ars Technica

The Federal Trade Commission has filed a civil lawsuit against Butterfly Labs (BFL), an embattled Kansas-based Bitcoin miner manufacturer. The FTC alleges that the company engaged in fraudulent and deceptive practices.

Federal authorities believe that the three named members of the company’s board of directors—Jody Drake (aka Darla Drake), Nasser Ghoseiri, and Sonny Vleisides—spent millions of corporate revenue on all kinds of things, including saunas and guns, while ignoring many customer orders that went unfulfilled or were significantly delayed.

“The FTC alleges that one corporate defendants and three individual defendants have taken in over $50 million by operating a scheme that required consumers to pre-pay for machines that would allow consumers to ‘mine’ for Bitcoins, a new virtual currency,” the complaint states. “Defendants either never delivered these machines or delivered them so late that they became obsolete.”

Vizio takes 4K mainstream with launch of $999.99 P-Series TV | The Verge

Vizio has just announced that the P-Series 4K LED HDTV line we first saw way back at CES is now available. And it starts at only $999.99 for the 50-inch model,

4K content is getting easier to come by, too; Netflix is still your primary source, but its catalog is growing (albeit slowly) and Amazon plans to offer 4K video later this year. Both of those apps can be streamed on the P-Series. The main takeaway is this: 4K TVs aren’t new, but Vizio is here now. And when a $999 4K TV has floor space at Walmart, that’s (hopefully) going to push companies to move even faster in getting 4K movies and TV shows out there.

The Closed Internet of Things

From the crockpot to your smoke detector, the famous “Internet of Things” is slowly, and half hazardly coming into reality. Unfortunately it’s dominated by sealed off devices you have no direct control over. As these devices fill our homes, are we taking something fundamental away from the homeowner, and from the open source community?

Google just announced that it\’s snapping up Nest, maker of smart thermostat and smoke detectors, for $3.2 billion in cash. Nest has raised around $80 million from investors including Shasta Ventures, Kleiner Perkins, and Google Ventures.

It\’s not yet clear exactly how Google plans to use Nest, but the company obviously sees it as an important part of its future. A combination of Nest\’s home solutions coupled with Google\’s language recognition could give Google its strongest path yet into your home. \”Google will help us fully realize our vision of the conscious home and allow us to change the world faster than we ever could if we continued to go it alone,\” writes Fadell on the Nest blog. \”We\’ve had great momentum, but this is a rocket ship.\”
