How to decided on a distro.

Ever since my upgrade from Ubuntu 16.04 to 16.10 borked my laptop I’ve been distro hopping like crazy and after the last rebuild today I have to ask: how the devil did you decide on a distro to stick with?
I been using Ubuntu, Ubuntu Mate, Solus, Elementary, Fedora, OpenSuse, and Antegos. But I can’t seem to pick on to stick with for more than a few weeks. Am I insane?

Runs Linux

Digital Signage RUNS LINUX

StreetSign is a digital signage system, originally written for the TeenStreet 2013 (Germany) youth congress. It works with a single server, and multiple client computers (for TS2013 we used Raspberry Pis) which connect over the network. It is light-weight enough that a raspberry pi can run as the server as well, for smaller installations.

Unmark – The to do app for bookmarks.

Unmark is designed to help you actually do something with your bookmarks, rather than just hoard them. A simple layout puts the focus on your task at hand and friendly reminders keep you in line. Filtering options let you find what you’re looking for.

Spotlight Karbon

Taking a stand against unofficial Ubuntu images

We are currently in dispute with a European cloud provider which has breached its contract and is publishing insecure, broken images of Ubuntu despite many months of coaxing to do it properly. The home-grown images on the cloud, VPS and bare metal services of this provider disable fundamental security mechanisms and modify the system in ways that are unsupportable. They are likely to behave unpredictably on update in weirdly creative and mysterious ways

The appropriate means to handle this kind of issue is trademark law. If someone claims that something is Ubuntu when it isn’t, that’s probably an infringement of the trademark and it’s entirely reasonable for the trademark owner to take action to protect the value associated with their trademark. But Canonical’s _IP policy_goes much further than that – it can be interpreted as meaning[1] that you can’t distribute works based on Ubuntu without paying Canonical for the privilege

Any redistribution of modified versions of Ubuntu must be approved, certified or provided by Canonical if you are going to associate it with the Trademarks. Otherwise you must remove and replace the Trademarks and will need to recompile the source code to create your own binaries. This does not affect your rights under any open source licence applicable to any of the components of Ubuntu. If you need us to approve, certify or provide modified versions for redistribution you will require a licence agreement from Canonical, for which you may be required to pay. For further information, please contact us (as set out below).

Fitbit is buying troubled smartwatch maker Pebble for around $40 million

The site reports that the acquisition is a “small amount” but there’s no word on exactly how much, or indeed how little. Further, The Information said that the deal will see Pebble and its products closed down over time, with Fitbit acquiring its assets, which include intellectual property and software.

: My daughter’s school recently got 20 Chromebooks to share between 3 4th grade classes. As you might imagine that is not enough. They are recommending that parents buy one for their kids, but also say a PC or Mac laptop would be fine. I’ve had my daughter doing her work on an old laptop that I put Ubuntu 16.04 on (but it’s a 17 inch laptop). I’m wondering if there are any small inexpensive laptops that could run Ubuntu that you could suggest. Most of her work is with Google docs and Google classroom.

I love all the JB shows!

  • Subject: Microsoft Moving to Linux?
  • Message:

This isnt really a question but a prediction that could be good or bad depending on how you look at it. With MS adding in support for bash etc in win 10 and then creating .net sdk etc for linux which allows powershell etc to run. Do you think as I do that MS may be looking at moving Win 10 (No Server editions of their products only their desktop/laptop/mobile OS) to a linux distro and then having MS packages like .net etc running on top. This would mean they dont have to support patch etc a desktop distro that takes up alot of their time and money but basically get the open source community to do that for them. Obviously this wont happen in next 5 years maybe not even for a while after that for a while. But I do think it may be something they looking into… PS Send my regards to Chris and the team for a great show(s). Cheers

Hello everyone. This is my first post on the sub.

I hear Noah mention sip calling sometimes. I am wondering what he uses and what you guys use? I am looking for a good inexpensive provider. I need to be able to receive inbound calls and make outbound calls outside of SIP. I have looked around the web and I can see there are plenty of options.

Thanks for all the feedback guys!
Asterisk is probably way more than I need. I am looking for simple. I am leaning towards Local Phone. Great price and a decent user interface on their website. If call quality is good then im set!

Projects we are Thankful For

View post on imgur.com

SimpleScreenRecorder

SimpleScreenRecorder is ‘simple’ in the sense that it’s easier to use than ffmpeg/avconv or VLC, because it has a straightforward user interface.

The input selection page:

Image: screenshot.png

Features
  • Graphical user interface (Qt-based).
  • Faster than VLC and ffmpeg/avconv.
  • Records the entire screen or part of it, or records OpenGL applications directly (similar to Fraps on Windows).
  • Synchronizes audio and video properly (a common issue with VLC and ffmpeg/avconv).
  • Reduces the video frame rate if your computer is too slow (rather than using up all your RAM like VLC does).
  • Fully multithreaded: small delays in any of the components will never block the other components, resulting is smoother video and better performance on computers with multiple processors.
  • Pause and resume recording at any time (either by clicking a button or by pressing a hotkey).
  • Shows statistics during recording (file size, bit rate, total recording time, actual frame rate, …).
  • Can show a preview during recording, so you don’t waste time recording something only to figure out afterwards that some setting was wrong.
  • Uses libav/ffmpeg libraries for encoding, so it supports many different codecs and file formats (adding more is trivial).
  • Can also do live streaming (experimental).
  • Sensible default settings: no need to change anything if you don’t want to.
  • Tooltips for almost everything: no need to read the documentation to find out what something does.
Why Chris’ Thankful:

*This is a first class screen capture app. Multithreaded is critical for me (my rig is constantly busy during pre-production). It does a fantastic job at capturing audio playing from video, and multiple ways to select the area I want to capture. This is my secret weapon to capture those un-capturable broadcasts for Unfilter *

Mumble, the open source VoIP solution

Mumble Features

Mumble is an open source, low-latency, high quality voice chat software primarily intended for use while gaming.

Why Chris’ Thankful:

I might think it has its quirks, but there are tons of reasons to love Mumble. It sounds good, offers great organizational abilities, allows for recording, and we use it every single LINUX Unplugged for our Virtual LUG and Tech Talk Today for insights into the news

Why Noah is Thankful:
  • An alternative to TeamSpeak that even many TeamSpeak people like better.
  • Easy to spin up your own server
  • Has allowed me to develop a group of friends outside the IRC

FFmpeg

Projects using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is used by software such as VLC media player, xine, HandBrake, Plex, Blender, YouTube,[47] and MPC-HC;[48] it handles video and audio playback in Google Chrome,[48] and Linux version of Firefox.[49] Graphical user interface front-ends for FFmpeg have been developed, including Avanti,[50] and XMedia Recode. JavaCV, a Java wrapper for OpenCV, includes a supplementary Java wrapper for FFmpeg.[51]

FFmpeg is used by ffdshow, LAV Filters, GStreamer FFmpeg plug-in, Perian and OpenMAX IL to expand the encoding and decoding capabilities of their respective multimedia platform.

Why Chris’ Thankful:

Not only does it power tons of tools we all love, but it’s one of the most critical piece of machinery in the Jupiter Broadcasting factory. We encode every episode with ffmpeg. It powers critical tools that many JB staffers use every day

Why Noah is Thankful:
  • Was the first tool I ever used to send a remote video feed to JB
  • Seems to be limited only by creativity
  • One of the tools that exemplifies how FOSS tools can far exceed anything proprietary.

youtube-dl

youtube-dl is a small command-line program to download videos from YouTube.com and a few more sites. It requires the Python interpreter (2.6, 2.7, or 3.2+), and it is not platform specific.

Why Chris’ Thankful:

*Meet one of my new best friends. This is one of the best tools of the year, with support for WAY more sites that YouTube, it makes it possible for JB to grab clips from a WIDE range of sources, store them off-line for immediate playback while on air, and convert/transcode them on the fly into a format suitable for us. Updates are quick, and fix issues with reliability. *

Why Noah is Thankful:
  • Use it daily to download YouTube clips that are bound to be taken off of youtube.
  • Because it’s CLI and not a browser extension it’s invisible until I need it
  • Because it’s CLI I can run it in the background and continue work in the browser, or even close the browser without any real consequences.

Avidemux

Avidemux screen shot

Avidemux is a free video editor designed for simple cutting, filtering and encoding tasks.

Why Chris’ Thankful:

*When working with any kind of long clip, an interview, news report, an episode outtake, Avidemux makes it crazy simple to select JUST the area of the video I want, and copy it out without any quality loss/transcoding. Or I can choose to transcode (say from h.264 video, with mp3 audio in an flv, to vp8, with opus audio, in a webm container) just the portion of the video I want. Another option would be just grabbing an audio portion of a clip, saving it as an MP3, and making an easy ringtone. *

Why Noah’s Thankful:
  • Allows Chris to edit under Linux.
  • Any alternative video editor on Linux provides competition to all improve.
  • No video editor is perfect and so anyone could be “the” video editor under LInux in the near future.

Open Broadcaster Software

OBS Screenshot

What is OBS?

Open Broadcaster Software is free and open source software for video recording and live streaming. Supported features include:

  • Encoding using H264 (x264) and AAC.
  • Support for Intel Quick Sync Video (QSV) and NVENC.
  • Unlimited number of scenes and sources.
  • Live RTMP streaming to Twitch, YouTube, DailyMotion, Hitbox and more.
  • File output to MP4 or FLV.
  • GPU-based game capture for high performance game streaming.
  • DirectShow capture device support (webcams, capture cards, etc).
  • Windows 8 high speed monitor capture support.
  • Bilinear or lanczos3 resampling.
Why Chris’ Thankful:

*While I’m not sure it’s quite there yet, this promises to free us from one huge proprietary monster *

Why Noah is Thankful:
  • One of the big road blocks for JB going all Linux.
  • Can be installed on practically any machine making remote broadcasting much simpler to plan
  • Can be used to build appliance like devices
  • Shortcomings not withstanding it’s usable today

Core Infrastructure Initiative

View post on imgur.com

The stakes have never been higher for open-source software security. With millions of people around the world relying on open source software — and vulnerabilities like Heartbleed putting everyone at risk — it’s time to change the way we support, protect, and fortify open software.

Why Chris’ Thankful:

HeartBleed reminds us that those core infastrucutre projects are vitally important and need funding just as much as the flashy front end facing projects

Why Noah is Thankful:

*A great start to streamline open source software in a way that will allow it to compete at scale with it’s proprietary alternatives.

Wayland Support is REALLY Taking Off

Toolkit support

Toolkits supporting Wayland include the following:

  • Clutter has complete Wayland support.[64]
  • EFL has complete Wayland support, except for selection.[65]
  • GTK+ 3.10 has complete Wayland 1.2 support.[66]
  • Qt 5 has complete Wayland support.
  • SDL support for Wayland debuts with the 2.0.2 release, but as experimental and disabled by default.[67]
  • GLFW 3.1 will have experimental unadvertised Wayland support.[68]
  • FreeGLUT has initial Wayland support[69]

Desktop environments supporting Wayland include the following:

  • KDE support:
    • KWin: is in the process of becoming a Wayland compositor, but support is incomplete;[70] support for OpenGL ES output was added in 2010,[71] in version 4.7.[72] In January 2013 KWin’s main developer Martin Grässlin started working for Blue Systems with one of the goals being a complete Wayland port.[73] Experimental Wayland support is now working in current KWin 4.11.[74]
    • KDE Frameworks 5: it is possible to run most applications built on top of Frameworks 5 under a Wayland compositor, without X11 as X11-dependent codepaths have become optional.[70]
    • KDE Plasma 5: is based on Frameworks 5, but as e.g. interfaces between the workspace shell, the compositor (KWin) and the display server are not yet well-defined or implemented up-stream, support is incomplete.[70]
    • Calligra Suite already has an unofficial but working port to Wayland.[75]
  • Glx-Dock has been ported to Wayland.[76]
  • The Hawaii desktop environment exclusively supports Wayland.
  • GNOME: In March 2013 GNOME developers announced plans for a complete Wayland port within a year.[77] GNOME 3.10 includes initial support that “will enable the project to fully adopt the next generation display and input technology in the future”.[78][79] The current roadmap targets GNOME 3.18 as the first version to be fully ported to Wayland.[80][81]
  • MATE: Wayland support is on MATE’s roadmap for “when MATE will become GTK+3 only”.[82]
Other software

Other software supporting Wayland includes the following:

Mobile and embedded hardware

Mobile and embedded hardware supporting Wayland includes the following:

Wayland Protocols v1.0 Released

The Wayland Protocols 1.0 release includes support for Fullscreen Shell, Input Method, Linux DMA-BUF, Pointer Gestures, Presentation Timing, Text Input, and XDG Shell. All of these protocols are considered unstable for the v1.0 release with no protocols being declared stable yet in this repository.

Why Chris’ Thankful:

*The path to Wayland has been long, and sometimes treacherous. As a long time Linux user it warms my holiday heart to see so much wide spread support, and so much collaboration in moving to Wayland and the future of the Linux graphics stack (also something, something, Mir) *

0 A.D. | A free, open-source game of ancient warfare

Wildfire Games, an international group of volunteer game developers, proudly announces the release of “0 A.D. Alpha 19 Syllepsis”, the nineteenth alpha version of 0 A.D., a free, open-source game of ancient warfare. This alpha features building and siege engine capture, a new pathfinder, visual replay and more!

# Why Chris’ Thankful:

*0 AD here is becoming a true blue serious game. Better than commercial stuff.

And it does not get enough attention. I’m thankful this team sticks to their guns, and keeps releasing a better and better product. They are becoming a shining example of what an open source project can be, let alone a game.*

Conservancy Announces Funding for GPL Compliance Lawsuit

Software Freedom Conservancy announces today Christoph Hellwig’s lawsuit
against VMware in the district court of Hamburg in Hamburg, Germany.
This is the regretful but necessary next step in both
Hellwig and Conservancy’s ongoing effort to convince VMware to comply
properly with the terms of the GNU General Public License version 2 (GPLv2), the license of Linux and many other
Open Source and Free Software included in VMware’s ESXi products.

Hellwig, a key Linux kernel developer and one of the earliest members of
Conservancy’s GPL Compliance Project for Linux Developers, has
publicly denounced VMware’s misuse of GPL-licensed code since 2007. In 2011, Conservancy discovered that VMware had failed to provide nor offer any source
code for the version of BusyBox included in VMware’s ESXi products (as
required by BusyBox’s license, GPLv2). Conservancy began in early 2012
negotiations with VMware to seek compliance on all GPL’d components in the
ESXi project. Progress was slow through 2012 and 2013.

Why Chris’ Thankful:

Hellwig’s lawsuit against VMware to enforce the GPL license of BusyBox, and the Conservancy’s support of it could be have long term ramfications for future ablity to encofce the GPL.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.2 – A major desktop milestone

So many of you have probably seen that RHEL 7.2 is out today. There are many important updates in this release, some of them detailed in the official RHEL 7.2 press release.

One thing however which you would only discover if you start digging into the 7.2 update is that its the first time in RHEL history that we are doing a full scale desktop update in a point release. We shipped RHEL 7.0 with GNOME 3.8 and in RHEL 7.2 we are updating it to GNOME 3.14. This brings in a lot of new major features into RHEL, like the work we did on improved HiDPI support, improved touch and gesture support, it brings GNOME Software to RHEL, the improved system status area and so on. We plan on updating the desktop further in later RHEL 7.x point releases.

RedHat / Fedora
About RedHat

Red Hat, the world’s leading provider of open source solutions, today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Ansible, Inc., a provider of powerful IT automation solutions designed to help enterprises move toward frictionless IT. Ansible’s automation capabilities, together with Red Hat’s existing management portfolio, will help users drive down the cost and complexity of deploying and managing both cloud-native and traditional applications across hybrid cloud environments. With today’s announcement, Red Hat expands its leadership in hybrid cloud management, OpenStack and containers.

Why Noah is Thankful:
  • One of the largest open source companies that has not let it’s profits get in the way of it’s commitment to free and open source software
  • Saved me from Windows, and made me believe there was hope for Linux as a desktop
  • A core group of people that are doing every day what many companies fractions of their size say isn’t possible for “big companies”

Show Notes:

Razer is launching an open-source VR headset this year

This year, Razer’s announcing an open-source software and hardware initiative known as “OSVR.”

That acronym stands for — you guessed it — “Open-Source Virtual Reality.”

Razer is releasing every detail of its virtual reality headset and the software that makes it work as open-source, enabling developers, makers and other enterprising individuals to create their own versions. The company’s also making and selling its own “Hacker Dev Kit”, set to debut sometime between now and June.

Razer Unveils Its $100 Android-Powered Gaming Console, Razer Forge TV

The Razer Forge TV is a micro-console, 4×4 inches and selling for $100, and Razer hopes it will give the company three new routes into your living room: as a platform for hardcore PC gaming, for Android gaming, and for Android-based entertainment services via Google Play. The Razer Forge TV is due out in Q1.

It has quad-core processing (Qualcomm Snapdragon 805; Quad-Core Krait 450 CPU – 2.5 GHz per core); a high-end graphics engine (Adreno 420 GPU

Wireless and network connectivity; 16 GB of internal storage and 2 GB of RAM.

On the non-gaming front, the Forge TV will also work as an entertainment hub, letting users stream music, videos and other apps, and photos to their televisions.

External hard drives? Pfah! Samsung just launched external SSDs

Samsung’s 250GB external SSD is priced at $179.99, a 500GB drive is $299.99, and a 1TB drive is $599.99.

The Portable SSD T1 drives will connect to a PC’s USB 3.0 port. The SSDs have sequential read and write speeds of 450MB per second, random read speeds of 8,000 IOPS (input/output per second) and random write speeds of 21,000 IOPS.

Dell’s new XPS 13 has a stunning edge-to-edge display

2015’s XPS 13 will ship with an even better and truly beautiful 13.3-inch “infinity” display. It has an incredibly tiny 5.2mm bezel on the top and sides. While previous models of the XPS 13 have always had an impressively small bezel, the latest feels truly edge-to-edge, and it’s dazzling to look at. Dell hasn’t just stopped at thin bezels, though, and the 2015 model now has an optional 3200 x 1800 high-resolution touchscreen display. That’s a massive improvement over the 1366 x 768 resolution we disliked on the original.

Dell is claiming the new XPS 13 is the “smallest 13-inch laptop on the planet,” thanks primarily to the 13.3-inch borderless display that’s squeezed into an 11-inch size laptop

LinuxCon 2014

LinuxCon North America | Linux Conferences and Linux Events | The Linux Foundation

LinuxCon is the place to learn from the best and the brightest, delivering content from the leading maintainers, developers and project leads in the Linux community and from around the world. There’s simply no other event in North America where developers, sys admins, architects and all types and levels of technical talent gather together under one roof for education, collaboration and problem-solving to further the Linux platform.

LinuxCon Day 1: Open Source is Eating the World | Open Source Today

Wednesday was the first day of LinuxCon and CloudOpen North America 2014 in Chicago. The event began with a keynote speech from Jim Zemlin on the State of Linux where he touched on a wide range of new developments and issues in the Linux Industry. He opened his keynote by stating “Linux Represents one of the greatest shared technology investments in the history of computing.” A testament to the adoption of Linux in nearly every single modern industry.

Interviews

The first full-featured Linux distribution for networking hardware. Customers to break free of proprietary, integrated networking gear, and realize the advantages of the software defined data center.

The IUS Community Project is a brain child of the RPM Development Team at
Rackspace Hosting. Since 2006, we have provided and maintain packages for
the latest versions of PHP/MySQL and other common software on Red Hat
Enterprise Linux, because a lot of our customers strongly demand it. Internally
we maintain a number of package sets for an audience of thousands of production
servers. Until now, these packages have only been available internally to
Rackspace customers. After a while we started thinking: Why not make this
available publicly for everyone to benefit?

Shutter is a feature-rich screenshot program for Linux based operating systems such as Ubuntu. You can take a screenshot of a specific area, window, your whole screen, or even of a website — apply different effects to it, draw on it to highlight points, and then upload to an image hosting site, all within one window. Shutter is free, open-source, and licensed under GPL v3.

Shutter 0.93 — which comes just over a week after the previous update — comes with an all-new plugin for popular cloud storage service Dropbox — one that improves authentication and fixes issues with public link creation.

Linux Founder Linus Torvalds ‘Still Wants the Desktop’

Kernel Panel

Linux kernel developer Greg Kroah-Hartman moderated the discussion and commented that Linux already runs everywhere. He asked Torvalds where he thinks Linux should go next. “I still want the desktop,” Torvalds said as the audience erupted into boisterous applause.

The challenge on the desktop is not a kernel problem, Torvalds said. “It’s a whole infrastructure problem. I think we’ll get there one day.”

Ditching Linux for Windows? The truth isn’t that simple, says Munich

No says the council, in spite of numerous reports to the contrary. Suggestions the council has decided to back away from Linux are wrong, according to council spokesman Stefan Hauf.

He said the council’s recently elected mayor Dieter Reiter has instead simply commissioned a report into the future IT system for the council.

“The new mayor has asked the administration to gather the facts so we can decide and make a proposal for the city council how to proceed in future,” he said.

“Not only for Limux but for all of IT. It’s about the organisation, the costs, performance and the useability and satisfaction of the users.”

The study, being conducted by internal IT staff at the council, will consider which operating systems and software packages – both proprietary and open source – would best satisfy this criteria. The study is not, as has been reported, solely focused around the question of whether to drop Limux and move back to Windows, he said.

Microsoft Lobby Denies the State of Chile Access to Free Software

Fresh on the heels of the entire Munich and Linux debacle, another story involving Microsoft and free software has popped up across the world, in Chile. A prolific magazine from the South American country says that the powerful Microsoft lobby managed to turn around a law that would allow the authorities to use free software.

Linux Foundation Debuts Linux Certification Effort

The Linux Foundation announced today its first Linux certifications for IT professionals. The new certifications were announced at the LinuxCon conference.

The two new designations are the Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator (LFCS) and Linux Foundation Certified Engineer (LFCE).

The new certifications mark the first time the Linux Foundation itself has offered formal certification.

LinuxFest Northwest 2014

\"System76\"

Brought to you by: System76

  • Valve Controller

  • Microsoft

  • Crouton

  • User focused

  • Canonical / Ubuntu feels totally outside of the conversation. Not that it’s avoided, it’s just not in the scope of the discussion. When asked folks tend to, often begrudgingly, admit to using Unity. It’s superior support for touch has been frequently cited.

  • So. Many. LAS. Fans. Seriously. The Linux Action Show rocked LinuxFest Northwest this year. We were an army, and it literally became ridiculous and absolutely amazing at the same time.

  • Project Atomic

  • Chat with Maddog

  • Crowd

  • Friday q5sys asked:

What do you think it is about this year that’s so different? What’s driven everyone out here, why this year?

  • This year was the mark of a new beginning. For LFNW it was the beginning of an era where every solution is welcome, and all of us, Microsoft, hardware, makers, idealists, those BSD jerks, and the hackers are ready to just solve problems.
  • the “post PC” era is here, and it’s amazing. Because it’s made of fanless incredibly small i5 powered Fedora rocking Wifi ninjas, and an army of Raspberry Pi type devices.

  • Our Crew. Every single one of them brought the A Game and they individually went above and beyond any reasonable expectation. Thank goodness there’s nothing reasonable about our show.

  • Linux Action Show pulled folks from all over the world, and that is simply amazing. We packed that Spark museum to tight they had to show the Tesla coil in shifts. And while we can’t claim credit for it all, it’s awesome to be part of a harmony of events that have brought more people together than ever in an age of over commercialized, PR blitz shows.
  • LinuxFest Northwest should be looked at as a model not just for all open source related conferences, but for the industry as a whole. The amount of real connections, decisions made, and information provided in a single day is staggering.

Chris and Jeremy get into the holiday spirt with 1988\’s action movie, with a holiday twist: Die Hard

Die Hard is a 1988 American action film directed by John McTiernan and written by Steve de Souza and Jeb Stuart based on the 1979 novel Nothing Lasts Forever by Roderick Thorp. Released on July 15, 1988, the film follows NYPD officer John McClane (Bruce Willis) as he takes on a group of highly organized criminals led by Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) performing a heist under the guise of a terrorist attack, using hostages including McClane\’s wife Holly (Bonnie Bedelia) to keep the police at bay.

The film\’s success spawned three sequels; Die Hard 2 in 1990, Die Hard with a Vengeance in 1995, and Live Free or Die Hard in 2007.

Show Notes:

Seasons : 10
Episodes : 215
Premier : October 16, 2001
Final Ep : May 13, 2011

Origins

* Derived after a potential series chronicling a young Bruce Wayne’s journey toward becoming Batman failed to generate interest [feature film division of Warner Bros, did not want to compete with a television series]
* After meeting with the president of Warner Bros. Television, Gough and Millar pitched their “no tights, no flights” rule, which would break Superman down to the bare essentials and look at the events that led Clark Kent to become Superman
* They returned and pitched their idea to both The WB and FOX on the same day. A bidding war ensued between FOX and The WB; the latter won out with a commitment of thirteen episodes to start
Interesting Points

* The pilot episode broke the record for highest rated debut for The WB, with 8.4 million viewers
* By the end of its run, Smallville became the longest-running comic book based series and longest-running North American science fiction series in television history beating Stargate SG-1
* The interiors of Templeton Secondary School were used for Smallville High’s interior; the production team repainted most of Templeton in Smallville High’s red and yellow colors, and stuck large Smallville High Crows logos everywhere.
-The team painted over so much of the school that the school eventually adopted them as their official school colors

Spinoff could-have-been’s

Aquaman

-Was to be played by Justin Hartley [Smallville’s Green Arrow]
-Expected debut fall 2006, but following the merger of the WB and UPN, the resulting CW Network opted not to buy the series.
-Made available online through iTunes in the United States and became the number-one most downloaded television show on iTunes

Green Arrow
During sixth season , “talking” was as far as the spin-off idea ever got

SMALLVILLE Producers Feel the Pressure of the Series Finale

Interview Lex returns

Jeremy’s Rants:
Smallville is not Superman!
The whole series felt like a psuedo-superheroey ripoff with the names and places from Superman legends randomly thrown in to spice up an otherwise unrelated story. Sometimes as things that made sense, other times … not. (Brainiac comes to mind)
– The stupid ‘creature of the week’ meteor junk in early seasons.
– Can’t fly?!
– Long, drawn-out romance with Lana Lang.
– And then, romancing Lois Lane before he’s even Superman!
– Lex Luthor. All of it.
** (Caveat: I actually loved what they did with Lex in Smallville, and the actor was phenomenal. But it wasn’t really Lex.)

I remember reading “The Door into Summer” by Heinlein some time in the 1970’s. In that book a man uses “cold sleep” to travel into the future. When he wakes up in a hospital they give him a newspaper on electronic paper, and he had to figure out how to turn the page by tapping in the corner of the screen. Whenever I see a news app on a tablet computer it reminds me of that.

An often forgotten historical scientific discovery by Aristachus. Eratosthenes of Cyrene, even coined the terms Longditude and Latitude, founded the discipline of Geography. He also calculated the circumference of the Earth. If he used the Egyptian Stadia, then his calculations were off my 2%. Though using the common Attic Stadion, it would have been circumference 16.3% larger. Even so it is still a amazing.

What about Dr. Gabor Forgacs a researcher at the University of Missouri. Regenerative medicine, where his research is into printing new organs. Then there are the 3D printers. A basic form of Star Treks replicators. Wonder if this could be the start of true recylcing technology. Break it down into constituant elements, then reuse in the 3D printer. There is also tissue engineering, organ cloning as an alternative into donor organs.
