Security Companies Accused of Exaggerating Iran’s Cyberthreats Against the US

A widely-read report accusing Iran of hundreds of thousands of cyberattacks against the U.S. is being criticized as hugely inaccurate as well as motivated by marketing and politics, according to a new whitepaper and critics around the security industry. The original report, solicited by a conservative think tank and published by Norse in the lead up to the RSA Security Conference, hit the front page of the New York Times by calling handshakes and network scans “sophisticated cyberattacks.”

House passes cybersecurity bill | TheHill

The House on Wednesday passed the first major cybersecurity bill since the calamitous hacks on Sony Entertainment, Home Depot and JPMorgan Chase.

Passed 307-116, the Protecting Cyber Networks Act (PCNA), backed by House Intelligence Committee leaders, would give companies liability protections when sharing cyber threat data with government civilian agencies, such as the Treasury or Commerce Departments.

“This bill will strengthen our digital defenses so that American consumers and businesses will not be put at the mercy of cyber criminals,” said House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.).

“Apple now rejecting applications with Pebble support”

We have just had the latest version of our SeaNav US iOS app rejected by Apple because we support the Pebble Smartwatch and say so in the app description and meta-data (we also state in the review notes that “This application was approved for use with the Pebble MFI Accessory in the Product Plan xxxxxx-yyyy (Pebble Smartwatch)”. See copy of rejection reason below.

SeaNav US has previously been approved by Apple with no problem, we have had Pebble support in SeaNav for nearly 2 years and there are no changes to our support for the Pebble in this version. What are Apple doing? Have they gone Apple Watch crazy? What can we do?

Amazon to deliver parcels to Audi boots in Germany

It is not clear when the service might become more widely available but Amazon said the pilot was a “first step” towards allowing all Prime customers to order goods to their vehicles, regardless of the vehicle brand.

Dropbox’s Collaborative Note-Taking Service, Dropbox Notes, Heads Into Beta Testing

Earlier this month, Dropbox was spotted testing an early version of an online note-taking service dubbed “Project Composer,” which appeared to have roots in the company’s 2014 acquisition of collaborative docs startup HackPad. Now Dropbox is rolling out this new service into private beta as “Dropbox Notes” and is inviting teams to sign up.

Freya Beta 1 Available for Developers & Testers | elementary OS

It’s been exactly one year since the release of the second version of elementary OS. On this, the day of our Lunaversary, we’re proud to make the first beta of elementary OS Freya publicly available for developers and testers.

Chromebooks get more useful with Elementary OS Beta

The Acer C720 has been tested and given a thumbs-up. The HP Chromebook 14 is untested physically but has been given a thumbs-up by the team because of its similarities with the Acer C720 profile. An ASUS Panther Chromebox has also been tested and verified.

Headlines

PIE and ASLR in FreeBSD update

  • A status update for Shawn Webb’s ASLR and PIE work for FreeBSD
  • One major part of the code, position-independent executable support, has finally been merged into the -CURRENT tree
  • “FreeBSD has supported loading PIEs for a while now, but the applications in base weren’t compiled as PIEs. Given that ASLR is useless without PIE, getting base compiled with PIE support is a mandatory first step in proper ASLR support”
  • If you’re running -CURRENT, just add “WITH_PIE=1” to your /etc/src.conf and /etc/make.conf
  • The next step is working on the ASLR coding style and getting more developers to look through it
  • Shawn will also be at EuroBSDCon (in September) giving an updated version of his BSDCan talk about ASLR

Misc. pfSense news

  • Couple of pfSense news items this week, including some hardware news
  • Someone’s gotta test the pfSense hardware devices before they’re sold, which involves powering them all on at least once
  • To make that process faster, they’re building a controllable power board (and include some cool pics)
  • There will be more info on that device a bit later on
  • On Friday, June 27th, there will be another video session (for paying customers only…) about virtualized firewalls
  • pfSense University, a new paid training course, was also announced
  • A single two-day class costs $2000, ouch

ZFS stripe width

  • A new blog post from Matt Ahrens about ZFS stripe width
  • “The popularity of OpenZFS has spawned a great community of users, sysadmins, architects and developers, contributing a wealth of advice, tips and tricks, and rules of thumb on how to configure ZFS. In general, this is a great aspect of the ZFS community, but I’d like to take the opportunity to address one piece of misinformed advice”
  • Matt goes through different situations where you would set up your zpool differently, each with their own advantages and disadvantages
  • He covers best performance on random IOPS, best reliability, and best space efficiency use cases
  • It includes a lot of detail on each one, including graphs, and addresses some misconceptions about different RAID-Z levels’ overhead factor

FreeBSD 9.3-BETA3 released

  • The third BETA in the 9.3 release cycle is out, we’re slowly getting closer to the release
  • This is expected to be the final BETA, next will come the RCs
  • There have mostly just been small bug fixes since BETA2, but OpenSSL was also updated and the arc4random code was updated to match what’s in -CURRENT (but still isn’t using ChaCha20)
  • The FreeBSD foundation has a blog post about it too
  • There’s a list of changes between 9.2 and 9.3 as well, but we’ll be sure to cover it when the -RELEASE hits

News Roundup

My FreeBSD adventure

  • A Slackware user from the “linux questions” forum decides to try out BSD, and documents his initial impressions and findings
  • After ruling out PCBSD due to the demanding hardware requirements and NetBSD due to “politics” (whatever that means, his words) he decides to start off with FreeBSD 10, but also mentions trying OpenBSD later on
  • In his forum post, he covers the documentation (and how easy it makes it for a switcher), dual booting, packages vs ports, network configuration and some other little things
  • So far, he seems to really enjoy BSD and thinks that it makes a lot of sense compared to Linux
  • Might be an interesting, ongoing series we can follow up on later

Even more BSDCan trip reports

  • BSDCan may be over until next year, but trip reports are still pouring in
  • This time we have a summary from Li-Wen Hsu, who was paid for by the FreeBSD foundation
  • He’s part of the “Jenkins CI for FreeBSD” group and went to BSDCan mostly for that
  • Nice long post about all of his experiences at the event, definitely worth a read
  • He even talks about… the food

FreeBSD disk partitioning

  • For his latest book series on FreeBSD’s GEOM system, MWL asked the hackers mailing list for some clarification
  • This erupted into a very long discussion about fdisk vs gnop vs gpart
  • So you don’t have to read the tons of mailing list posts, he’s summarized the findings in a blog post
  • It covers MBR vs GPT, disk sector sizes and how to handle all of them with which tools

BSD Router Project version 1.51

  • A new version of the BSD Router Project has been released, 1.51
  • It’s now based on FreeBSD 10-STABLE instead of 10.0-RELEASE
  • Includes lots of bugfixes and small updates, as well as some patches from pfSense and elsewhere
  • Check the sourceforge page for the complete list of changes
  • The minimum disk size requirement has increased to 512MB

\"OpenShot

OpenShot Video Editor is a free, open-source video editor for Linux licensed under the GPL version 3.0.

OpenShot can take your videos, photos, and music files and help you create the film you have always dreamed of. Easily add sub-titles, transitions, and effects, and then export your film to DVD, YouTube, Vimeo, Xbox 360, and many other common formats.

\”I use OpenShot as my main editor, the only parts that really get to me are when I need to add \” Titles\” and \”Credits\”. It just feels a bit overly complex. Are there plans to overhaul this in the UI while at the same time keeping the editing tracks as they are?\”

  • Linda Dean:

Will the updates include the ability to easily insert a photo into a title? I love the advanced editor, but it can be very complicated to the uninitiated.

PC-BSD:

System76

Brought to you by: System76

  • Download PC-BSD 9.1-RC1

  • For full release versions, along with the full selection of CD, DVD and USB images, PC-BSD also offers ready to use VirtualBox and VMWare images

  • The Install:
    • Your choice of Desktop Environments, Installer automatically adjusts the defaults depending on how much ram you have installed
    • Your options: KDE, Gnome, LXDE or XFCE
    • Another option is TrueOS, a console based server, FreeBSD with the CLI version of Warden, the PBI system, ZFS Boot Environments and other utilities
    • The install also offers vanilla FreeBSD Server
  • Disk Partitioning
    • PC-BSD allows you to do a full ‘root on ZFS’ install (only recommended if you have 4 or more GB of ram), including creating many different datasets with different settings such as compression for optimal use of space
    • You have the option of the Basic Wizard, the Advanced Wizard, or the FreeBSD CLI partitioning system
    • The advanced Wizard also allows you to setup more complex ZFS mirror or RAIDZ
    • You can choose to optionally encrypt your hard disk using GELI
  • Warden
    • Warden is a Graphical and Command Line based manager for FreeBSD’s Jails feature
    • In FreeBSD a jail is a secondary installation of the OS files, which is then started in a chroot, and the processes, network and user/group IDs are separate
    • Allows you to manage three types of jails:
    • Traditional Jail – run internet applications in a container, if compromised, the attacker only gains access to the jail, not the host OS
    • Ports Jail – less secure version if jails, allows you to install applications from the FreeBSD ports tree without interfering with the PBI package manager in the host OS
    • Linux Jail – install Debian or Gentoo in a jail, and run your linux applications in a full linux environment
    • Warden also allows you to stop a jail, pack it up, and move it to a different physical machine
    • Warden also allows you to install meta-packages into the jails with a single click, allowing you to deploy apache+php+mysql in no time
    • Warden can back your jails storage with ZFS, allowing you to take advantage of ZFS features such as snapshots, clones (writable snapshots), revert to a previous snapshot, etc
  • Warden Wiki

Chris’ notes:
Hardware:
HP Envy 17 – Wifi was not detected. Only the vesa video driver seemed to work.

VM: No major issue, video performance is not great.

If you consider yourself someone who likes to stay current on open source software releases, try out new betas, and upgrade right after release – PC-BSD is probably not for you.

I failed to find the KDE desktop compelling for me. A good enough implementation, but error pages in certain areas and a lack of anything particular interesting drove me to try the other desktops.

This is one, of two audiences I think PC-BSD could be great for. The first is Gnome 2 lovers. Gnome 2.32 ships with PC-BSD as an option, along with LXDE and XFCE. I tried them all, but Gnome 2 was the most fun. It really was a treat to set up the old workhorse the way I used to like it.

It also made me realize, the world has moved on and Gnome 2 is just not for me anymore.

However, if the work horse aspect is important to you – then you might be the second category of user I think PC-BSD is great for. The enterprise workstation.

FreeBSD is an awesomely cohesive and well built system, even as an outsider in a strange new land I can detect and appreciate the collective thought behind this operating system. On top of that, it’s stable, fast, and has one of the best file systems in the world for managing and protecting large sets of data.

The speed and utility of the Gnome 2 desktop is great, the XFCE setup would also work quite well in a workstation type setup.

Combine that with years of updates, iXsystem’s enterprise expertise and you could have a major contender in the workstation market.

All that said, if you want the latest version of HandBrake (PBI: 0.9.3 current: 0.9.8), PiTiVi ( PBI: 0.13.4 current: 0.15.2), or Chromium (PBI: 21.0 Current: 22.0) and so on, you’ll need to look else where.

Much of this can be alleviated by taking advantage of the FreeBSD ports tree, which PC-BSD makes it easy to setup with just a few clicked.

If wireless and 3D acceleration are important features for you, test the system first.

For users like myself, there are areas of the system that feel a bit unpolished. Perhaps the result of a small, but dedicated team. And despite the team’s amazing efforts, it still feels like the FreeBSD desktop market could be shrinking as the Linux game market heats up.

In lieu of the AoC review originally scheduled for this week, Jeremy’s decided to throw together some of the hottest stories that’ve surfaced over the past week in the MMO industry. Included in this grab bag of editorial goodness is the DCUO-F2P announcement, GamersFirst’s new “offer” venture, WoW’s unique features coming in patch 4.3, and Trion World’s charitable efforts.

DCUO announces going F2P

  • I just said last week that this needed to happen, since CO and COH are both free now, and Marvel U will be F2P as well (if it ever launches).
  • This just sounds like an excuse to charge people for future expansions, like they intended to do with Fight for the Light.

GamersFirst invites spammers onboard

WoW Patch 4.3 will bring easier PUG raids and cosmetic options

  • A new LFG queue that will automagically put you into lower-difficulty versions of the existing raids, with lesser loot. But 25-man versions ONLY.
  • These raids also don’t include lockout timers, which will be a HUGE boon to folks that regularly do PUG raids.
  • This will work GREAT in WoW due to the nature of the community, but I’m worried about this becoming a trend that other games may pick up on. Any developer interested in this trend needs to take a close look at their specific type of community before deciding whether to use this same methodology.
  • For example, WoW has a healthy PUG community, and a lot of smaller guilds that can only raid 10-man zones. So making a 25-man option more accessible actually allows MORE players to experience this side of the raiding game (which has a huge content focus in WoW).
  • Meanwhile, if a game thrives more on small groups and tight communities, implementing something that reinforces a PUG atmosphere would offer very little benefit while encouraging community fragmentation.

RIFT devs get awesomely charitable

  • Partnering with “Extra Life” to benefit Children’s Miracle Network

  • Devs will be creating a guild and inviting new characters to join them, and play for 24 hours straight.

  • They will also offer titles to anyone that participates (“the Charitable”) and for anyone that lasts the entire 24 hours (“the Insomniac”).

  • Also a whole mess of achievements/contests:

  • Highest Level Achieved

  • Most Favor Earned

  • Most Planarite Earned

  • Highest Crafting Skill (combined)

  • Most Achievements Earned

  • Most Dungeons Completed

  • Most Money Earned

  • Most Critters Killed

  • Most Artifacts Collected

The ENTIRE WORLD of online gaming erupted in a massive conflagration of hate, bile, controversy and intrigue, and naturally it was EVE Online that was to blame for it all. It seems like any time a major newsworthy meltdown occurs, this sandbox space simulator is the culprit behind the uprising.

On today’s MMOrgue, we’ve brought on a veteran EVE player as a correspondent to cover the highs and lows of the launch of the Incarna expansion, and editorialize on what CCP did so very, very wrong.

My thoughts:
It seems, to an outsider, that the purpose of the Aurum store was to allow players to circumvent the ISK:PLEX exchange, and shortcut the economy straight from RL money to in-game items.
This, on a certain level, makes sense.
The issues arose from rumors of new Aurum-only items, and the feeling that allowing cash-purchased items devalues the time-based skill investments of long-time players.
TIME is the ultimate currency. In a way, every MMO is just a complicated barter system for your time investment.
With the widespread shift to F2P+CashShop mechanics, will this have a lasting impact, or will it be looked back on as a “silly debate”?

According to Paul Darrow (well-known voice actor) his work on SWTOR will be published by Christmas

Add this to a rumor I’d heard that the SWTOR Razer gaming peripherals will be released in November… it’s looking like a pretty solid launch date for this much-hyped title.
But jeez… that’s still 6 months away! pout

In this week’s MMOrgue, we’re digging up the dirt on the world of superhero MMOs! Join us as we don our capes and tights to take a look at the latest troubling reports from inside Marvel Universe Online, as well as examine the effects that SOE’s network security issues and subsequent outage have had on DC Universe Online.

Last but not least, we examine the announcement that Atari is parting ways with Champions Online developer, Cryptic Studios. What has motivated this divestment, and what could this mean for the studio’s future and existing projects?

Show Notes:

First, to respond to some feedback:

“The dark theme and name do not suit the show’s content.”

  • First the obvious reasoning behind the name: Everybody talkes about MMOs, and everybody considers themselves an expert worthy of a name and brand. Hence, MMO-everything is taken. I kid you not.
  • More importantly, the concept of looking at the inner workings of a living industry is very much in line with the idea of cataloguing and studying our dead.
    • I chose this theme and name to illustrate a scientific and analytic approach to the stories that will be covered herein.
    • The communities, technologies, and professionals of this industry are very much the heart, lungs and brains of any MMO. Without analysing what motivates and drives any of these, we potentially lose sight of the whole.
  • And lastly, the MMO industry is a dangerous place. Covering titles and technologies that are dead, and finding out what put them there, is something that WILL be covered on this show.

“You need a co-host.”

  • If this was a show about sharing the latest press releases and announcements, I would be inclined to agree. Finding commentary and conversation on such topics is easy, and flows best between separate minds.
    • However, as this show is 100% editorial driven, the content is created from the mind of its host. Increasing the number of minds involved would only fragment the content and any opinions contained herein.
  • That said, there will occasionally be important industry events which either slip my radar, or about which I know too little to accurately form an editorial opinion.
    • In these circumstances, I intend to invite “correspondents” to join me on air to discuss those particular situations. If you feel as though you would like to become a correspondent, please contact me by posting at jupitercolony.com, or by emailing jeremy@jupiterbroadcasting.com, to start a discussion on what content you would like to present to our audience.

DCUO and SOE outage

  • Infographic
  • On May 2nd, SOE went dark. Then hundreds of thousands of gamers cried out in frustration, and never went silent.
  • It took almost two weeks to get the network, and all of Sony’s games, back up and running and (apparently) secure from further invasion. That outage is estimated to have cost SOE a total of $171 million.
  • And this is AFTER a fiscal year that ended in March, which reported an annual loss of $3.2 billion for the company.

What does this rough patch mean for the future of DCUO?

  • Nobody at SOE is making any official statements yet, other than to say that DCUO’s population is currently “very good.”
  • In the past 3 months, there have been two replacements among the DCUO project’s upper management that were made from within … existing execs taking on extra responsibility instead of promotions, or new hires.
  • And this after the project suffered a round of layoffs in April.
  • It is likely that subscriptions will see a noteworthy drop due to the outage. Even with the incentives being offered by SOE by way of apology.
    • This comes down to Consumer Confidence, which is fancy way of saying “people don’t like to be jerked around.”
    • SOE has a large overhead, capable of supporting a few rocky patches. Even so, they’ve been known to shut down games (Matrix Online).
  • GOOD NEWS: Apparently this outage scared SOE into being more interactive with their customers, and their forums are now ablaze with Dev Posts at regular intervals sharing REAL info instead of SOE’s standard practice of silence and mystery.
    • Let’s hope it lasts.

MegaServers

  • Just days before the SOE network outage, it was announced that ALL of the existing DCUO servers would soon be merged into a few instanced networks called “MegaServers.”
  • Through the use of “phasing” technology, players will still be participating in areas that will have reasonable populations.
  • The benefit of this is to allow all of the back-end queueing for Raids, Duos, Alerts, and PvP to work across ALL players (on a per-platform basis).
  • The idea of server mergers has always been seen as a bad thing by the MMO press. It indicates a population decline, and a lack of interest.
    • This MAY be different, as this sounds more like a fundamental tech shift, and not just a run-of-the-mill merger.
    • However, it is still addressing an issue that would not be present if the game had a large and active population of gamers (queue times for instanced content).
  • Community outcry of “name collision” issues, and lack of solid responses from SOE, are causing additional schisms and rage among players.

Champions Online – Atari divests itself from Cryptic

https://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/34704/Atari_Drops_Champions_Online_Developer_Cryptic_Studios.php

First, rumor killing:
– Nothing is happening YET. Atari has only announced their INTENT to divest. They have not announced that they are seeking a buyer, nor that any change of staff will occur as a result of this decision.

Atari is making a Bad Choice

  • Investing in casual markets
    • Casual / Facebook games do not create brand recognition, fan loyalty or press.
    • As this market continues to mature, games will become more and more complex and impressive until their development budgets rival current standalone titles.
    • Long-term investment in this area will continue to require more and more finances to remain competitive. It is not a quick and cheap money-maker market.
  • Profits continue to rise
    • 17.3 million prior year, 7 million this year, next year = ??
    • While actively developing at least one unreleased title – Neverwinter
    • Early indications that Champions Online move to F2P has resulted in huge increase in profits, which only occurred in Q3 of 2010.
  • Foundry Tech
    • No other MMO has created such a successful and robust UGC tool, and it is now available to be ported to all titles using the Cryptic Engine: STO, CO and NWO.
    • Giving the power of content creation to users opens up new doors to new types of gamers, and creates a powerful sense of community.
    • Other MMO devs would probably love to get their hands on this technology…

Independence for Cryptic?

  • In today’s MMO landscape, no Dev survives alone.
  • They all need a publisher, and most publishers end up owning the Dev studio
    • Blizzard was acquired by Activision in 2007
    • Bioware became a part of EA in 2007
    • Turbine, the biggest example of a successful “indie” developer, was purchased by Warner Bros in 2010.
  • To date, no major developer has managed to leave its parent publishing company, and survive. In fact, it’s such a risky prospect that studios typically just dissolve rather than even attempt it.

So then, who buys Cryptic?

  • I think it’d be a bit presumptuous for me, as a gamer and not a financial analyst, to try and make an educated guess on this one.
  • MMORPG.com has a couple good editorials that cover most of the major candidates in this area. Check the show notes for details, as I don’t have much else to add to the discussion at this point.
  • Fans of Star Trek Online are hoping that the company is acquired by CBS, the IP holder of the Star Trek franchise.
    • Would CBS be interested in entering the online gaming arena? They haven’t yet.

Future of Neverwinter IP?
Possibly the biggest question mark in all of this…

  • Atari holds publishing rights on all Dungeons & Dragons products until 2017.
  • A lot of money and time already invested in the project, including a co-publishing deal with a line of novels written by R.A. Salvatore, and a deal with Wizards of the Coast for additional tie-ins.
  • Unlikely that Atari will let this one go completely.
    • It will either get pulled from Cryptic and given to another studio with Atari maintaining their publishing oversight, or a new deal will be worked out to keep Atari on board in spite of their divestment from the studio.
    • Either option discounts the title from being a bargaining tool in obtaining a new investment partner.

Marvel Universe

F2P

  • Attempting to live under the title of “First ever AAA F2P MMO in the West, at time of launch”
    • Color me completely unimpressed.
    • First of all, you can’t CLAIM a title like “Triple-A” without having a product. At this time, with the total lack of game footage, screenshots, timelines for beta/release, or even branding… what is here to lay claim to?
    • This just sounds like empty hype, from a company that has already started disappointing us with overblown hype for their other unlaunched MMO, Jumpgate:Evolution.

No Character Customization
Rank this as my “most worrying” concern for this title.

  • On the one hand, it will allow players to jump into game as iconic well-known superheroes from the Marvel franchise.
    • A lot of people will find this appealing, as evidenced by the outstanding sales records for single-player superhero titles like “Ultimate Alliance.”
    • Developers at Secret Identify Studios claim this will make everyone feel more heroic, and “we won’t be merely ‘sidekicks.’”
      • EMPTY CLAIM — CO allows heroes to feel like heroes, and even have their own Nemesis with minions and a base. What sidekick has that?!
  • On the other, how many Wolverines and Hulks will be roaming around? Or will each server have only one instance of each? Where’s the “massive” in this MMO, if that’s the case?
    • And how about progression? If you have to unlock the powers of your favorite superheroes, how do you explain them losing their abilities at the start of the story?
  • Possibly one of the biggest selling points of superhero MMOs to date, has been character customization. CoX and CO had it in droves, and DCUO’s comparative lack of options brought them a lot of criticism from MMO players and press.
    • This is a technological step backwards, and will only work if this is NOT a true MMO as we’ve come to define it.
    • If this is just another “X-Men Legends” or “Ultimate Alliance” with robust online matchmaking services, then it could work.
    • But any form of persistence, progression and community, will be lost without personalization of your avatar.

Written by Bendis
This has the potential to make me excited.

  • Brian Michael Bendis is the godfather of Marvel’s “Ultimate” universe, and creator of some of the most critically acclaimed stories ever to spring from comic books. Including “Avengers Disassembled,” “House of M,” “Civil War,” and “Secret Invasion.”
  • He claims to be writing stories for MUO that will portray some of the most iconic moments from each characters’ lore, and re-imagine them into events that players will experience in-game.
  • Not much else to say about it, really. Bendis has never really done anything ‘wrong’ (except, arguably, killing off Hawkeye… ) so it’s great news for the story side of the game.
  • Between this, and the news that R.A. Salvatore is writing for Cryptic’s “Neverwinter,” it could set a precedence in the industry to bring in more established high-profile writers to flesh out the story of an MMO. Nothing wrong with that at ALL. There’s a reason they are high-profile after all… it’s because they’re AWESOME.

MATH:

INTRODUCING:  THE CHART !! https://bit.ly/mathchart

What’s it for?  The point of this particular resource, is to offer you a way to balance your boff-related expenditures, to ensure that you’re seeking out abilities that aren’t too costly, and therefore leave you room in your skill point pool to beef up these abilities to the max, man.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me by email, jeremy@jupiterbroadcasting.com

COMMUNITY FEEDBACK:

The one good link:  https://stofan.comxa.com (sent in by about a dozen of you)
Good resource for guides, tutorials, maps and much much more.

Oh, and a ship chart:  https://www.spidermitch.com/STO/SpidermitchFEDShipChart.jpg
Inspired by Suricata’s ship chart, but now with complete graphical views from every angle.

The rest have been Fleet-specific websites.  At this time, we’ve chosen not to focus on Fleets, to avoid playing favorites of any kind.  But, I will say that some of your sites looked great.

NEXT WEEK’S QUESTION:
In light of Stahl’s announcement that ESD and Qo’nos will be getting facelifts, send us your ideas for features that the new versions of these core social areas need to obtain.

OUR TRIP TO CRYPTIC:

  • Jeremy and Chris visit Cryptic Studios, we report!

jupiterforce.org is active!

  • There is a "Home Page" containing content we haven't had time to modify yet.
  • www.jupitercolony.com to discuss the show's content

OPEN BETA REPORT:

  • Our reactions to beta (no NDA now!)
  • Etc
  • Server capacity reached!

Most of Saturday, and on/off this morning, the STO servers were popping up a "Server is Busy, please try again later" box.

It was announced that this was due to the hard-coded server capacity limits they've put in place, based on hardware performance.

  • No hard numbers on what that cap is, but I'd imagine it's quite high (like Bryan's ego).
  • You can keep clicking and sneak in when someone else logs off/disconnects.
  • Relatively stable performance under such a load!  (No worse than the rest of the week was)
  • We warned them... Silly Cryptic!

Then we go over the best details in our interview round up with Cryptic staff, plus we reveal a few more beta details sent to us from our anonymous tipsters.

Then – We cover some of the all time best screen shots, and pick out the details that we think are important.

Plus so much more!

This Week’s Links & Notes:

Episode 12

News:

-Cryptic launches brand new interactive web design
https://www.startrekonline.com

-Open Beta date announced, Starting January 12, 2010 thru January 26, 2010
https://www.massively.com/2009/11/19/star-trek-online-open-beta-dates-announced/

Beta Leaks:
-Multiple confirmations that STO works just fine under Bootcamp on Macs.
-Received some screenshots of a work-in-progress on a game manual.
-Latest patch improved graphics. New screenies just look like they added a glow or filter.
-Still no playable Klingons or Bridges

Panel Question: Micro-Transactions

-Are you ok with paying for in-game upgrades/mods
-NCsoft is selling Super Booster IV and Hero-Con Re-Cap in City of Heroes, $9.99
-All characters on the account get the upgrade/boost

-Would you be ok with these kinds of upgrades in STO?
-Does it make the game unfair because people with spare money can get an un-fair advantage?
-Do you think if STO takes off, Cryptic might consider this? — Note from Jeremy: These are already confirmed to be present in STO.
-Quote from Zinc: “Star Trek will have micro-transactions, but most of those will be cosmetic things. Some will augment gameplay, but won’t replace any gameplay.”

Articles:

-Ship Q&A @ Massively
https://www.massively.com/2009/11/16/ships-star-trek-online-community-qanda-answers/
-All ships of the same class/tier have the same stats. (T4 Escorts = identical, except cosmetics)
-Confirmed plans to add more ships
“Escorts are the quick-moving, precision-striking ships of the fleet. They’re not as hardy as other ships, but they’re tough to hit and can fit cannons, which are high-damage, almost sniper-style weapons. Cruisers are big ships with a big crew and huge engines that provide them lots of power, so they can fit a lot of guns, send big boarding parties and repair their hull and subsystems very quickly. And Science ships can detect cloaked vessels, use tractor beams to hold other ships in place and expose a weak side, take out shields with powerful tachyon beams, and lend aid to other ships in need. “

-Ground Combat Q&A @ TTH
https://www.tentonhammer.com/node/76794
-“Each episode is a 5 act instance. Within those five acts, 3-5 ground maps.”
-Flanking confirmed.
-Episodes (60/40) // Patrol Missions (almost 100% space) // Star Clusters (50/50, and contains many non-combat areas to explore)
-Most melee attacks ignore shields
-All weapons have 3 attacks: Primary (steady dmg), Secondary (special effects) and Melee (usually w/ knockback).
-“Replay Mechanism” — helping someone do a mission you’ve already completed, will give you a secondary reward.

-Maximum PC interviews Zinc
https://www.maximumpc.com/article/web_exclusive/star_trek_online_interview

-There are surrenders, in main storylines. (no ship explosion)
-Death in space = return to spawn point w/ “some damage to your systems”
-Crew level affects hull regeneration. You can USE crew as boarding parties against enemies, or repair (healing) parties to allies.
-Each boff can get up to 4 abilities (1 per rank) on top-rank stations.
-Maximum abilities is 6 boffs, 12 abilities available (station limits).
I-f <5 players, team leader assigns boff slots for ground combat. -There ARE large away missions with multiple teams - all captains (no boffs) -"Security Escort" ability (from a kit) beams in a team of "highly aggressive redshirts." mwahaha -"We don't have levels..." but there are 5 ranks w/ 10 subranks each... so really, they DO have levels. -There will be some randomly generated content (Genesis), but most seems to be handed off to designers to finish. -4 Sector Hubs: Fed, Klingon, Romulan, Borg (4 seasons coincide)
Videos:

-New video @ official site: “Starship Tactics (part one)” https://www.startrekonline.com/videos
Note: Look how much smoother the footage is!
-AoE torpedo explosion!
-Floating combat text confirmed

-New video on IGN: “Starship Tactics (part two)”
https://pc.ign.com/dor/objects/14270158/star-trek-online/videos/startrekonline_trl_starshiptacticspt2_111909.html
“Resourceful captains will also be able to utilize and recognize the different classes of starships: Cruisers for tanks, Science vessels for Support, and Escorts for lightning strikes.”
-TNG Enterprise bridge shot! (@0:50sec)
-Boarding parties: Launch shuttles, which then work internally on the enemy ship to disable systems and decrease efficiency of repairs/shield regen.
-But then the ship blows up? Those better have been worthless redshirts…
-Saucer separation? Glitched, but shown @ about 2:55… a Galaxy class without a saucer, and a nearby ship that might be the detached saucer.
