Dallas Ebola Patient, Thomas Eric Duncan, Dies – NYTimes.com

Thomas Eric Duncan, 42, the patient with the first case of Ebola diagnosed in the United States and the Liberian man at the center of a widening public health scare, died in isolation at a hospital here on Wednesday, hospital authorities said.

Mr. Duncan died at 7:51 a.m. at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, more than a week after the virus was detected in him on Sept. 30.

NSA is Crazy

‘No Place to Hide’ by Glenn Greenwald, on the NSA’s sweeping efforts to ‘Know it All’

In one remarkable slide presented at a 2011 meeting of five nations\’ intelligence agencies and revealed here for the first time, the NSA described its \”collection posture\” as \”Collect it All,\” \”Process it All,\” \”Exploit it All,\” \”Partner it All,\” \”Sniff it All\” and, ultimately, \”Know it All.\”

In a one-month period last year, for example, a single unit of the NSA, the Global Access Operations unit, collected data on more than 97 billion e-mails and 124 billion phone calls from around the world; more than 3 billion of those calls and e-mails were collected as they passed through the United States. As of 2012, the agency was processing more than 20 billion telecommunications per day. In a single month in 2011, the NSA collected 71 million calls and e-mails from Poland alone

The NSA achieves these ends by working hand in hand with private telecommunications and Internet service providers.

One NSA document describes an unnamed corporate partner as “aggressively involved in shaping traffic to run signals of interest past our monitors” and reports that in a single month, this top-secret, public-private partnership yielded more than 6 billion records of telephone calls and Internet activity.

Other documents describe X-KEYSCORE, the NSA’s most powerful tool, which, as its name implies, enables the agency to track every keystroke on a computer, permitting the agency to monitor in real time all of a user’s e-mail, social-media and Web-browsing activity. In a single month in 2012, X-KEYSCORE collected 41 billion records for one NSA unit. Greenwald contends that this is the program Snowden was referring to when he said that, with an e-mail address, he could tap into any American’s communications.

He notes that the NSA collects data not only for counterterrorism purposes but for economic and diplomatic advantage.

Sony Pictures Buys Film Rights to Book on Snowden

Sony said on Wednesday that it had acquired rights to Mr. Greenwald\’s book, \”No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA and the U. S. Surveillance State,\” for the producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. Mr. Wilson and Ms. Broccoli are known for their work on James Bond films like \”Skyfall\” and \”Quantum of Solace,\” both of which were released by Sony and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

Orwellian threats caused the New York Times to spike a story on NSA spying way back in 2004

Working with New York Times reporter James Risen to make the story public. But Risen\’s editors decided to run the story by the government. They wanted to get the government\’s take, before the Times revealed \”The Program.\” Kirk says top White House officials made three arguments to Times editors, in trying to convince them not to run the story.

Russia says open to talks if Ukraine pays off some gas debt

Russia will restart gas talks with Ukraine if its new leaders pay off at least part of its gas debt, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said on Wednesday, softening Moscow\’s stance in a dispute that has raised fears of a new \”gas war\”.

\”The North Crimean canal is currently operating in a mode that has been adjusted to meet the needs of the Kherson Oblast\’s water users due to the absence of constructive proposals to establish contractual relations for providing the Autonomous Republic of Crimea with water resources for domestic water supply and irrigation,\” said the statement of May 8.

Nuland has tough time justifying US involvement in Ukraine

During a two hour House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, the US
Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland shared her assessment of the US role in Ukraine\’s crisis
and the upcoming presidential election.

Washington is offering \”financial, technical and
non-lethal security assistance\” for the May 25 election.

\”In addition to $92 million in FY2013 State/USAID funds and
$86 million in FY2014 funds, we are providing an additional $50
million in technical assistance and the $1 billion dollar loan
guarantee under the authority passed by Congress on April
1st.\”

The US electoral assistance includes \”$11 million for
non-partisan election activities, including efforts to support
voter education and civic participation\” as well as
participation as observers in the upcoming poll.

\”In addition to the 100 OSCE observers we are sending, the
United States is supporting 255 long-term observers and over 3300
short-term observers,\” Nuland said.

Financial aid also involves \”$18 million in non-lethal
security assistance to the Ukrainian armed forces and
State Border Guard Service to enable them to fulfill their core
missions.\”

They approved a plan to setup a network of uninsured cooperatives that would offer basic banking services to pot businesses.

The so-called \”cannabis credit co-ops\” would function like credit unions, allowing licensed marijuana businesses to pool resources, have checking accounts and take out loans. The co-ops would be able to make investments on behalf of their members in municipal bonds and other securities.

Bank of America Will Accept Washington State Marijuana Revenue

Bank of America declares it is willing to accommodate new marijuana related businesses, according to Jim McIntire, Treasurer for the state of Washington. \”I mean, in fact, we\’re already taking some tax revenues, I believe, for medical marijuana. So it\’s not a real issue in terms of their perception.\”

3 Months Since Legalizing Marijuana, Here\’s What Colorado Looks Like

The state\’s Department of Revenue reports that marijuana retailers sold nearly $19 million in recreational weed in March, up from $14 million in February. The first three months of legal weed have netted about $7.3 million in taxes, not including medical marijuana sales taxes and licenses, which bring the number to $12.6 million.

Retail marijuana sales taxes brought in $1.4 million in January, $1.43 million in February and now $1.898 million in March — a clear upward trajectory. And total marijuana tax transfers and distributions went from $2.927 million in January to $4.077 million in March.
the up-trending numbers indicate that initial sales weren\’t simply the result of \”new-toy\” excitement wherein everyone was buying pot just because they could.

Over the same time period, crime in Denver has slightly declined, making opponents who said it would result in more trafficking seem kind of silly. It\’s created a modest number of jobs ranging from \”budtending\” and marijuana journalism to farm labor and ownership.
Legal cannabis sales in the United States are projected to reach as high as $2.57 billion this year, split among the 21 states that allow the sale of some form of marijuana. That\’s up from $1.53 billion a year ago.

The Colorado legislature has already formed a plan to spend $33 million of the marijuana taxes on school nurses and public education on marijuana. Even Colorado cops plan to get a chunk of the new revenue, asking for 10-15% of the proceeds for DUI enforcement and fighting diversion to other states and unlicensed sales.

The bulk of sales, however, continue to be in medical marijuana, which has been legal in Colorado since 2000 and recorded $35 million in sales in March. However, since recreational weed is more heavily taxed, it could still rapidly outpace medical marijuana in total tax dollars.

Edward Snowden defends decision to question Vladimir Putin on surveillance

In the phone-in, Snowden asked Putin: “Does Russia intercept, store or analyse, in any way, the communications of millions of individuals?”

Putin replied: “Our intelligence efforts are strictly regulated by our law… We don’t have a mass system of such interception and – according with our law –it cannot exist.”

The wording was deliberately modelled, Snowden says, on the query of US senator Ron Wyden to the director of national intelligence, James Clapper, in March last year – almost three months before the NSA disclosures began – to which Clapper blatantly and inaccurately denied that the US government collected data on millions on Americans.

“The question was intended to mirror the now infamous exchange between Senator Ron Wyden and DNI James Clapper… and to invite either an important concession or a clear evasion” from Putin, Snowden writes.

Lavabit held in contempt of court for printing crypto key in tiny font [Updated] | Ars Technica

A federal appeals court on Wednesday upheld a contempt of court ruling against Ladar Levison and his now-defunct encrypted e-mail service provider, Lavabit LLC, for hindering the government’s investigation into the National Security Agency leaks surrounding Edward Snowden.

In the summer of 2013, Lavabit was ordered to provide real-time e-mail monitoring of one particular user of the service, believed to be Snowden, the former NSA contractor turned whistleblower. Instead of adequately complying with the order to turn over the private SSL keys that protected his company’s tens of thousands of users from the government’s prying eyes, Levison chose instead to shut down Lavabit last year after weeks of stonewalling the government.

Dead Ukraine Politician Faced Hostile Pro-Russia Mob Before Being Tortured – Business Insider

Rybak had tried to remove the flag of the separatist Donetsk Republic, the website said. “Over my dead body will you take down that flag,” one man in plain clothes yells at Rybak as the politician tries to gain entry to the town hall.

Two uniformed policemen appear in the video, though only one appears to intervene – ineffectually. After several minutes, Rybak appears able to walk away. Ukraine’s Interior Ministry said he was seen being bundled into a car by masked men in camouflage later that day. His body was found on Saturday near Slaviansk.

Drone Update:

U.S. drone strike kills New Zealander, Australian in Yemen

The newspaper The Australian first reported the deaths. The newspaper said Wednesday the men were killed Nov. 19 during a Predator drone strike on rebels traveling in a convoy of cars in Yemen’s eastern region of Hadramout. It said the men were part of Yemen’s Al-Qaeda branch, also called Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

The newspaper identified the Australian as Christopher Harvard of Townsville.

Court: U.S. must release memo on targeted killings

A federal appeals court ordered the U.S. Department of Justice Monday to turn over key portions of a memorandum justifying the government’s targeted killing of people, including Americans, who are linked to terrorism.

That information was leaked to the German media – and the American ambassador there has been summoned for an explanation. France wants to ‘temporarily suspend’ trade talks with US over NSA spying — RT News

France wants to delay the ‘biggest bilateral trade deal in history’ by 2 weeks after learning the USA was allegedly tracking economic communications of EU member states. But Germany says they should go ahead as planned.

At Tuesday’s press conference in the capital Quito, minister Patino said that the hidden listening device was found during a regular security check by the Ecuadorian intelligence for the Ecuadorian embassy in the UK on June 16.

The microphone was found in the office of the ambassador Ana Alban.

“We immediately conducted an investigation to find the source and I will release our result at tomorrow’s press conference including the source of the device, who was using it and which department installed it”, Patino told reporters.

Biden asks Ecuador to reject Snowden’s asylum request

Vice President Biden has asked Ecuador to turn down an asylum request from National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, the country’s president said Saturday.

Rafael Correa said he had a “friendly and very cordial” conversation with Biden, and told the vice president that Ecuador hadn’t sought to be put in the situation of deciding whether to harbor an American fugitive. Correa said Ecuador can’t consider the asylum request until Snowden is on Ecuadorean soil.

Secret tape of Bradley Manning Leaked

Despite onerous Army rules prohibiting recording of the Manning hearings at Ft. Meade, Maryland, the recently formed Freedom of the Press Foundation published anonymously sourced audio of Manning’s full plea allocution on Tuesday, allowing the world for the first time to hear the crisp voice of the 25-year-old Army private as he details his leaking of thousands of Army field reports and a quarter-million State Department diplomatic cables to WikiLeaks.

Pakistan, Iran Leaders Inaugurate Pipeline Project

The Iran-Pakistan pipeline is designed to help Pakistan overcome its mushrooming energy needs at a time when the country is facing increased blackouts and energy shortages.

But there are serious doubts about how Pakistan could finance the $1.5 billion needed to construct the pipeline and whether it could go through with the project without facing U.S. sanctions, which Washington has put in place to pressure Iran over its nuclear program.

Quraishi, president of the lobbying group PakNationalists Forum,
said that the United States’ threat of sanctions is just for public
show. In terms of bilateral relations, Washington will try to
accommodate some of Pakistan’s reasons for proceeding with the

CIA Effort In Iraq Places US Spooks On Syria’s Three Largest Borders

Officals told WSJ that the agency provides support to Iraq’s Counterterrorism Service (CTS) — comprised of SWAT-like units and U.S.-trained Iraqi special forces — which reports directly to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

In June The New York Times reported that CIA officers in southern Turkey was been funneling weapons to Syrian rebels. In December NPR reported that CIA officers were training rebels in Jordan on how to identify and safeguard chemical weapons (while Der Spigel reported that it had been happening since May).

In October and November we reported on potential but unconfirmed indications that the CIA may have been funneling heavy weapons from Benghazi, Libya, to Turkey.

On Monday, EFF and over 30 other Internet rights organizations sent a letter to members of Congress demanding they vote no on the “cybersecurity” bill known as CISPA. The letter starts off a week in which Congress will hold three different hearings about CISPA and computer and network security. CISPA Opponent’s Petition Reaches White House To Stop Congress

“CISPA is about information sharing. It creates broad legal exemptions that allow the government to share ‘cyber threat intelligence’ with private companies, and companies to share ‘cyber threat information’ with the government, for the purposes of enhancing cybersecurity,” the petition begins. “The problems arise from the definitions of these terms, especially when it comes to companies sharing data with the feds.”

Not so Fast WA: Drones could bring billions of dollars, jobs, to Washington state

While Washington competes to be designated a test site for unmanned aircraft by the FAA a new report details just how much money the drone industry could bring to our state. New estimates show Washington could see an economic impact of more than $1.3 billion in just three years.

“Washington is one of those states that would be benefited the most. You have Boeing, which is already involved in this. But you also have all the spin-offs from having a high number of well-trained engineers with product knowledge on this,” says study author and aviation economist Daryl Jenkins.

Nationally, the immediate impact could be upwards of $13 billion, according to Jenkins.

Much-needed legislation to control surveillance by government drones has gained bipartisan support in Olympia. HB 1771 puts reasonable rules in place that would protect the public against warrantless surveillance while allowing drone use for legitimate purposes – like avalanche patrols and rescue operations. But Boeing is lobbying heavily to block the bill. Tell the Governor not to give in to Boeing – the people of Washington want safeguards against suspicionless surveillance.

Japan’s 52 nuclear reactors were taken off line following the world’s second most grievous nuclear accident (after Chernobyl). All but two remain in cold shutdown. As Japan scrambled to replace all that lost energy production it gobbled up oil to fire up generators

Soon after the disaster Japan’s government revised plans on developing the national nuclear energy industry. The same year Germany approved a program on abandoning nuclear power. At present only 9 NPPs are operating there. Though Germany plans to shut them down by 2022, experts note that Berlin just like Tokyo will have to adjust its plans.

In late 2012, the new Japanese government announced plans to deviate from the policy of the previous cabinet and re-launch 6 nuclear reactors on the territory of the country. The term was not mentioned
