Lightworks

Lightworks is EditShare’s Academy and Emmy award-winning, professional Non-Linear Editing (NLE) software supporting resolutions up to 4K as well as video in SD and HD formats. In the last 25 years Lightworks has been used to edit some of the finest films in cinema history

One of the most powerful professional NLE’s on Linux

Whether you are running on Linux, Windows or Mac OS X, the power of Lightworks will be right at your fingertips. Now you can use your operating system of choice without impacting on the work you need to get done. No other editing software out there runs on all three platforms.

Lightworks has the widest native format support available in any professional NLE. MXF, Quicktime and AVI containers, with almost every format you can think of importing natively without the need for transcoding, from ProRes, Avid DNxHD, AVC-Intra, DVCPRO HD, RED R3D, DPX, AVCHD (with AC3 audio), H.264, XDCAM EX / HD 422, all on the same timeline in realtime. Check out the detailed Tech Specs for a full list of supported formats.

Ubuntu Tablet Pushed Back

Bq has quietly pushed back the shipping estimate of the world’s first true Ubuntu tablet by one week.

Updating shipping information for both HD and FHD models of tablet on its website, Bq say “Deliveries will take place starting from the second half of April“.

It previously read: “Deliveries will take place starting from the second week of April” (emphasis ours).

Not a huge delay but a delay nonetheless.

If you pre-ordered the tablet on the assumption of getting it this week this is us telling why you may be waiting a little longer for a dispatch notice.

The delay was pointed out to us by reader Jack F., who explained in his e-mail

“I pre-ordered the BQ tablet thinking that deliveries would take place second week of April. BQ have changed this to second half on their site without notifying via email it would be delayed. Would be good for other customers to know.”

Researchers help shut down spam botnet that enslaved 4,000 Linux machines

Known as Mumblehard, the botnet was the _product of highly skilled developers. It used a custom “packer” to conceal the P__erl-based source code that made it run, a backdoor that gave attackers persistent access, and a mail daemon that was able to send large volumes of spam._

itch.io Open Market Place trying to get App on Steam

Itch.io is an open marketplace for indie games. According to their About page, if you’ve made a game you can easily upload it, set the price, and sell your game through Itch.io, and “It’s never necessary to get votes, likes, or follows to get your content approved…”

Speaking of which, the creators of Itch.io have a desktop client called Itch, and while it’s already available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, they’re going a step further by putting Itch on Steam Greenlight, where they hope to get enough votes, likes, or follows to make it onto Steam proper. Which sounds a bit strange, trying to launch an app for a games marketplace on another games marketplace. As one commenter puts it: “storefrontception.”

Linus Torvalds Gives TED Talk

Linus Torvalds, creator of the Linux operating system and the Git source code management system, opened the “Code Power” session at the recent TED2016 conference, speaking in an interview with TED Curator Chris Anderson.

In the talk, Torvalds, whose blunt approach in dealing with people is well known, stated, “I’m actually not a people person. I don’t really love other people, but I do love other people who get involved in my project.”

In the TED talk, Torvalds admitted that he is sometimes “myopic, when it comes to other people’s feelings…” However, he said, “What I love about open source is that it really allows different people to work together.”

Nonetheless, typically self-deprecating Torvalds doesn’t see himself as a visionary. Instead, he says: “I’m an engineer. I’m happy with the people who are wandering around looking at the stars but I am looking at the ground and I want to fix the pothole before I fall in.”

I actually am very happy with the Linux desktop, and I started the project for my own needs, and my needs are very much fulfilled. That’s why, to me, it’s not a failure. I would obviously love for Linux to take over that world too, but it turns out it’s a really hard area to enter. I’m still working on it. It’s been 25 years. I can do this for another 25. I’ll wear them down.”

BitPay’s Internal Mining Pool

At BitPay we are huge proponents of open source software and of course cool gadgets! To do some of our internal testing, we built a small pool of bitcoin miners that run raspbian. Those two miners each have a powered USB hub and a few usb miners each. They are cooled by a pair of simple USB fans. All of which sits neatly on the corner of my desk! Gotta love how easy it is to deploy something like this in such a small form factor on linux… It’s reliable, fast, and just plain looks awesome sitting on my desk!

elementary OS Freya Available For Download, See What`s New

Freya

For those not familiar with elementary OS, this is an Ubuntu-based Linux distribution (with Freya being based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, supported until April 2019) which ships with its own desktop environment, called Pantheon, and its own custom application for the most part, which look great, integrate very well with the desktop and ship with sane defaults so the user doesn’t have to tweak anything.

Valve games for Mesa/DRI developers

Linux Graphics Stack

Hi,
At Collabora (my lovely dayjob), we’ve been working with Valve on
SteamOS. Valve are keen to give back to the community, and we’ve been
discussing ways they can help do that, including providing free access
to Valve games on Steam to Debian developers last year.

We’re happy to say that this has been extended to Mesa developers as
well, to say thanks for all the great work. If you have 25 commits or
more (an arbitrary number) to Mesa0 in the past five years, please
drop me an email (with ‘Steam’ in the subject) with your freedesktop
username and Steam username. We can then get you access to all past
and future Valve-produced games available on Steam[1].
Thanks for all the great work, and enjoy.
Cheers,
Daniel

Gnome 3.16 Hits

GNOME, desktop environment project, released their latest version of 3.16 recently so I decided to make an update to my previous extension package releases. I made a similar post last year for the GNOME 3.14 Release because some of my extension broke. Unfortunately, some of those extensions are still unmaintained and thus not updated for 3.16 either. So I am continuing to update some extensions for myself and anyone else who wants them.

Intel Atom quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. It plugs directly into a monitor or TV via HDMI, and is powered through a Micro USB jack on the side of the stick. There’s also a full-sized USB port, and Bluetooth 4.0 for connecting a mouse and keyboard.

Microsoft Adopts ODF

Microsoft has confirmed it will start supporting the Open Documents Format (ODF) in the next update to Office 365, following a lengthy battle against the UK government.
In 2014, Microsoft went against the government’s request to support ODF, claiming its own XML format was more heavily adopted. The UK government refutes the claim, stating that ODF allows users to not be boxed into one ecosystem.

Gnome 3.16 systemd-journal coming in next Tumbleweed snapshot

It’s official, Gnome will be in the next Tumbleweed snapshot and the development experience is highly anticipated. A clean installation works, but the guys are working on one last test before its released. We’re not promising an early Easter gift, but Tumbleweed users won’t have to wait long for Gnome’s latest upgrade.

A small change to Linux can be seen in Tumbleweed with a change from the syslog to systemd-journal; the systemd-journal as a binary file needs special tools to look at it.

How to Install and Run Android Apps in a Linux OS

Basically, anyone with a computer will be able to get an APK file and get it running inside the Google Chrome browser with a minimum amount of effort. What’s even more interesting is that the app only needs Google Chrome installer, it doesn’t need it to run. If you check the background processes, you will notice that a Chrome one is running along with the Arc Welder.

Community Review: KaOS

The idea behind KaOS is to create a tightly integrated rolling and transparent distribution for the modern desktop, build from scratch with a very specific focus.
Focus on one DE (KDE), one toolkit (Qt), one architecture (x86_64) plus a focus on evaluating and selecting the most suitable tools and applications.

All work is geared toward packaging, not developing new tools or applications.

There is no goal to make the most possible software available, KaOS will stay limited in size of the repositories, and will work on quality instead of quantity. That goal makes it clear, a large user base is not what is intended or expected.

It targets users who have tried many Operating Systems/Distributions/Desktop Environments and have found they prefer a Distribution that uses all its available resources to work on one DE to make that the best it can be, and know that after their searches, the best for them is KDE.

KaOS – 2014.06 Release Notes

The June version comes with an installer, non-free nvidia driver, all language packs, KDE 4.13.2, linux kernel 3.14.6 (linux-next is in the repo’s, following the 3.15 series), glibc 2.19, systemd 212, kmod 17, xorg-server 1.15.1, Qt 4.8.6, QtWebkit 2.3.3, mesa 10.2.1, calligra 2.8.3, amarok 2.8.0 and the latest versions of qupzilla, octopi, kde-telepathy, kdenlive, plasma-mediacenter and Qt 5.3.0.

For those wondering about gtk apps, firefox 30.0, chrome 37, thunderbird 24.6.0, ardour 3.5 are among the available in their latest version.

Linux distributions are also unified at the core library level. In addition to the kernel, you have projects like X.org, glibc, gstreamer, Gnome, QT, webkit, CUPS, clutter, etc. These are all example of core libraries that generally are included in almost every variant of mobile Linux; Chrome, Android, MeeGo, WebOS, LiMo, etc. They all use these same “base” components.

Bird gave a thought-provoking talk with a conclusion that will probably surprise some: he thinks a \”good\” fork of the kernel is the right approach to meld Linux and the \”Internet of Things\”.
