Developer Warns Of “Uncorrectable Freedom & Security Issues” For x86 – Phoronix

A developer long involved in Coreboot/Libreboot development is trying to call attention to “uncorrectable freedom and security issues” on x86 platforms with nearly all post-2009 Intel systems and post-2013 AMD systems.

Linux kernel lawsuit SCO v IBM is alive, 13 years and counting

At its core, SCO Group, then named Caldera Systems, filed suit (PDF) against IBM in March 2003 for allegedly contributing sections of commercial UNIX code from UNIX System V—which the SCO Group claimed it owned—to the Linux kernel’s codebase. SCO Group claimed that the alleged presence of its proprietary code in the open source kernel devalued its proprietary code and that by making the source code available, IBM had violated its license agreement with SCO Group. Along the way, SCO filed for bankruptcy, and the group claimed that anyone who used Linux owed them money. All the while, Novell successfully claimed ownership of the allegedly infringing code and agreed to indemnify Linux users.

Plasma 5.7 will let you login through online account

KDE is going to provide an ownCloud installation to let Plasma and KDE PIM (Kontact) users sync their data: you can already use ownCloud with cardDAV, calDAV and webDAV protocols to keep contacts, calendars and files synced across your devices, including the ones powered by Plasma and Kontact.

The next step is providing an ownCloud app to sync Plasma configurations and manage them.

The KDE statement for their vision is: “A world in which everyone has control over their digital life and enjoys freedom and privacy.

Ubuntu MATE March 2016 supporters

Many thanks to everyone who donated to the Ubuntu MATE project this
month. You have been generous as always and ensured that we can meet
all the costs associated with running the Ubuntu MATE project and the
community site. In fact, this month we are able to reward some
developers for working on Ubuntu MATE projects.

Welcome to Apricity OS, a modern, intuitive operating system for the cloud generation of computing. We believe that an operating system should be easy to use, easily accessible, and beautifully designed. We have also incorporated software in order to minimize security risk as much as possible.

Linux Desktop in VR?

Metaverse Lab • Hackaday.io

I created Ibex as a fun project to get a working virtual reality desktop or workspace for the Oculus Rift when it finally comes out. Currently it runs quite quickly on Mac OS, Windows as well as on Linux both on a virtual machine and on a native Linux Desktop running XFCE with no other compositing windowing manager running. Currently I’m getting around 250fps.

JanusVR combines the power of the internet with the potential of virtual reality.
Websites become immersive spaces linked by portals, where users can explore, collaborate and create content on a platform that builds upon the open internet.

Librem 15: A Free/Libre Software Laptop That Respects Your Essential Freedoms | Crowd Supply

The Purism Librem 15 is the first high-end laptop in the world that ships without mystery software in the kernel, operating system, or any software applications. Every other consumer-grade laptop you can purchase comes with an operating system that includes suspect, proprietary software, and there’s no way for you to know what that software does.

The reality is that unless every aspect of your kernel, operating system, and software applications are free/libre and open source, there is no way to know that your computer is truly working in your best interest. Purism is the first to solve this problem.

CoreOS is building a container runtime, Rocket

Rocket is a new container runtime, designed for composability, security, and speed. Today we are releasing a prototype version on GitHub to begin gathering feedback from our community and explain why we are building Rocket.
