Few things that were not mentioned in LAS:

new option to always show menu has been added
client side decoration is fully supported in Unity
Gnome Calendar is installed by default
Empathy has been removed similar to Brasero as not many people use desktop IM clients
Startup Disk Creator have been update, and actually works
Gnome Software has proper notifications (what Noah was saying has been fixed)
Music and Messaging menus are dynamic now, for example if you use VLC to play media only controls for that player show up
Unity now support 3rd party themes better
most software are set to optional, so you can uninstall a key software and it won’t break your system
The launcher, not only can you move it to the bottom, it also shows the icon of the application you launched to let the user know that it has been launched and is loading (for slower computers, this will help the user from accidentally launching it again)
Launcher now properly shows different instances of nautilus (i.e. USB CD, Trash, Downloads, etc. are shown separately and not all clumped into one icon of Files)

Again, it’s the out-of-the-box experience on each of the desktop environments without any tweaking. There’s also some desktop environment developers that recommend running Linux games in their own X.Org Server, etc.

Stali’s project head, Anselm R. Garbe (a developer currently working at BMW, and creator of the DWM window manager), believes static linking works out better for most common use cases. The most obvious benefit is that static binaries have a smaller memory and on-disk footprint. Static binaries also claim to be faster, although there are no benchmarks as yet to show how Stali performs against other distributions.

Linux Solves Rubics Cube

The fastest time for a human to solve a Rubik’s cube is 4.9 seconds. This robot can do it in 1.019 seconds.

Software engineers Jay Flatland and Paul Rose built this piece of kit, which uses four webcams to determine the state of the jumbled cube. The information is then fed into a computer, using the Kociemba Rubik’s cube-solving algorithm to work out a set of moves to solve the puzzle. A set of small motors mounted in a 3D-printed frame then swivel the, presumably extremely well-oiled, Rubik’s cube.

The previous quickest time for a robot to solve the cube is 2.39 seconds, so it looks like this could be a record breaker; however, they’re still waiting for official verification from Guinness World Records.

Pretty impressive. Although some super slow-motion footage wouldn’t go amiss.

Kodi 14.2 Helix – Release Candidate | Kodi

We are proud to announce the release candidate of Kodi 14.2 in which we further try to improve stability. As you may all know by now, we have a new name, a new logo, and a wide variety of new features, but underneath the new coat of paint remains the same software we all love. 14.2 will become the the second and final bug-fix release in the Helix range. As we have mentioned in our Kodi 14.0 release announcement, we will be releasing these extra releases to squash down any issues left after the first big release. Kodi 14.2 Release Candidate Available

Kodi 14.2 Helix is a stable bug-fix release over the existing Kodi 14 series. The 14.2 version is the second and final planned bug-fix release before Kodi 15. With today’s Kodi 14.2 RC there’s a handful of bug-fixes.

Windows 10 to make the Secure Boot alt-OS lock out a reality

Should this stand, we can envisage OEMs building machines that will offer no easy way to boot self-built operating systems, or indeed, any operating system that doesn’t have appropriate digital signatures. This doesn’t cut out Linux entirely—there have been some collaborations to provide Linux boot software with the “right” set of signatures, and these should continue to work—but it will make it a lot less easy.

The BQ Aquaris Ubuntu Phone’s Kernel Appears To Be A Toxic Mess

Carsten Munk of the Mer Project and Chief Research Engineer of Jolla has raised some concerns about the Linux kernel used by the BQ Aquaris E4.5 smart-phone running Ubuntu Touch. The kernel appears to have module source-code marked as confidential and other markings that would not comply with the GPLv2 license of the Linux kernel.

In a blog post out today, the Linux Android-based kernel used by Ubuntu on their first smart-phone is difficult to find the official source tree. When finding a kernel source tree for the BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition Phone, Carsten was greeted by many “confidential and proprietary” statements from MediaTek, the company whose SoC is powering the phone. In other modules are confidential and proprietary licenses from other vendors too.

Some of you might have seen today’s blog post from Carsten Munk, from the
Mer project, where he pointed to conflicting comments in the kernel sources
of the Ubuntu phone for bq devices.

We are working with bq to understand the situation and planning to publish
the final E4.5 Ubuntu edition sources next week. We are confident that
these will address any questions raised by the preview source tree.

“This release brings a new integration into the operating system file manager. With 1.8.0, there is a new context menu that opens a dialog to allow the user to create a public link on a synced file. This link can be forwarded to other users who get access to the file via ownCloud,” says Klaas Freitag in the official release announcement.

BioShock Infinite Now Available For Linux, Demands Binary Graphics Drivers

BioShock Infinite is a first-person shooter developed by Irrational Games and published by 2K Games. BioShock Infinite is powered by Unreal Engine 3 and was released for all other platforms in late 2013 while the Linux release is coming one and a half years later. This game used DirectX 11 on Windows while for porting it over to Linux is using eON for translating to OpenGL.

A Chat with elementary OS

You thought the day would never come, but after 6 months and almost 600 fixes we’re bringing you the next step on our way to a final release of elementary OS 0.3!

elementary — Payments

We explicitly say you can download Luna for free, we include a pay-what-you-want (including $0) text entry with $10 pre-filled, and we also include an explicit “Download Luna for free” link that simply sets the text entry to $0 for you.

Next, you’re given the payment/download dialog:

The text entry matches whatever was on the first screen, but we again let you change it to anything you’d like, including $0.

Users have downloaded Luna over 2,000,000 times. Around 99.875% of those users download without paying. Of the tiny 0.125% who do, the most common payments are the default $10, followed by $1. But again, only a tiny fraction of one percent of users even decide to pay in the first place.

Furthermore, we’ve received feedback that this flow is deceiving. It doesn’t make it clear enough that there are multiple payment options and it includes a payments step even if you’ve chosen to enter $0.

elementary misses the point « Blog Fiasco

A recent post on the elementary blog about how they ask for payment on download created a bit of a stir this week. One particular sentence struck a nerve (it has since been removed from the post): “We want users to understand that they’re pretty much cheating the system when they choose not to pay for software.”

Despite the technical issues the Bq Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition handset managed to sell out its debut run.

There are many challenges that go along with building any software. Some are obvious and some are more subtle. However, some challenges, as I’ve recently realized, aren’t related to computers at all. Sometime in late October, my wife and I decided that it would be fun to put our house on the market, and “test the waters”. We have been talking about moving out of Arlington, TX (a relatively big city) for years, and heading towards a bit more land, and less city. As fate would have it, we had an offer on our house within 1 week, and all of a sudden needed to find a new house, make repairs, pack, rent a moving truck, etc… etc… Needless to say, this required a lot of time and energy.

Many large Commercial software vendors are transitioning to a subscription model. Does this create an even great lockin for schools?
One-to-One programs are very expensive, and the argument I’ve always heard was: Must use Windows, must use Office. Have get the kids ready for the “real world” that uses those tools. Is there a sound argument to that “concern”?
Linux and open source give students the ability to go very deep into how the computer works, if they are motivated and want to embrace their inquisitive nature. How far down the rabbit hole are your young Linux users permitted to go? How much can they explore?
Can you tell us how the Fast Linux Deployment Toolkit was created, and what it does?
What are some of the most useful open source software and tools you, or the students use?
What is the biggest road block others should expect?

Charlie Reisinger from the Penn Manor School District talked to us next about open source at his school. This talk was an expanded version of his lightning talk from the previous night.

Penn Manor has nine IT team members which is a very lean staff for 4500 devices. They also do a lot of their technology in house. But, before we talk about open source, Charlie took a tangent into the nature of education today. He says that school districts are so stuck on the model they’re using and have used for centuries, but today kids can learn anything they would like with a simple connection to the Internet. You can be connected to the most brilliant minds that you’d like, so teachers are no longer the fountains of all knowledge. A glaring gap in this evolution is that the classroom hasn’t been transformed by technology; if you walked into a classroom 60 years ago, it would look pretty much like a classroom today.

1:1 Laptop Program | PM Technology Blog

During the 2012-2013 school year, a committee comprised of faculty, administrators and a school board liaison worked to evaluate the viability of a district 1:1 computing program. After several months of internal discussion and public board presentations, a recommendation to proceed with a 1:1 laptop program at Penn Manor High School was unanimously approved at the April 1, 2013 school board meeting. The recommendation called for the program to commence with a pilot during the Fall of 2013. The full building implementation began in January 2014. At that time, each full-time high school student was provided with a personal laptop computer for use throughout the school day and at home.

Mozilla ends Google relationship, Firefox will now default to Yahoo in the US

Mozilla and Yahoo have signed a five-year deal. As part of the deal, Yahoo is going to start honoring the Do Not Track feature when used by Firefox users to limit Yahoo’s ability to track user activity across the Web through advertisements. Yahoo is also going to roll out a new search interface for American Firefox users, starting in December.

Crowdfunding project promises a “laptop that respects essential freedoms”

Based on the Intel i7-4712MQ processor, the 15.6-inch Librem 15’s base configuration will come with an Nvidia GT840M, 4GB of RAM, a 500 gigabyte hard drive, and an actual CD/DVD drive. The Librem will have three USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI port, an SDXC card slot, and a “pop-down” RJ-45 Ethernet port, in addition to an Atheros-based 802.11n Wi-Fi adapter, a 720p built-in camera, HD audio, and a backlit keyboard.
