PowerShell is open sourced and is available on Linux

Today, we are taking the next step in our journey. I am extremely excited to share that PowerShell is open sourced and available on Linux. (For those of you who need a refresher, PowerShell is a task-based command-line shell and scripting language built on the .NET Framework to help IT professionals control and automate the administration of the Windows, and now Linux, operating systems and the applications that run on them.) I’m going to share a bit more about our journey getting here, and will tell you how Microsoft Operations Management Suite can enhance the PowerShell experience.

While the €169.90 Aquaris E4.5 is a mid-range phone, the Meizu MX4 delivers considerably more computing power for €299. It runs on a Meizu-customised octa-core MediaTek MT6595 SoC with four ARM Cortex-A17 and four ARM Cortex-A7 cores, with a PowerVR G6200 GPU to handle the graphics, all supported by 2GB of LPDDR3 RAM.

The Aquaris M10 Ubuntu Edition combines two different interfaces so you can use it either as a tablet or as a PC. The first module offers all the typical functions of a tablet, while the PC mode is activated automatically when you connect it to a mouse and keyboard.

The problem? Ubuntu no longer includes HAL by default nor in the Ubuntu Archive. Sites that use Flash DRM don’t work on Ubuntu out of the box.

Dell’s Linux PC sequel still “just works”—but it adds 4K screen and rough edges | Ars Technica

For $1,533 out of the gate or about $2,080 as tested, is the M3800 Developer Edition worth it?

Sure—if you want a fast, well-built, well-equipped 4K laptop preloaded with Ubuntu, with most of the potential edge-case configuration issues already taken care of, with an active set of developers working to ensure that the necessary repos are kept current, and with an actual, for-real OEM warranty and support.

The Good
  • Ubuntu 14.04, factory-preconfigured to just work
  • Barton George and the other Dell engineers worry about packages and drivers so you don’t have to
  • High-quality build: no squeaks, no rattles, no shimmies
  • 16GB of RAM, the potential for a large SSD, and a Haswell i7 CPU mean it’s got plenty of guts as a developer’s workstation
  • Reasonable amount of upgradeability
  • Display is bright, beautiful, and works with Ubuntu 14.04 (including the multitouch functionality)
The Bad
  • Thunderbolt port doesn’t really work in Ubuntu
  • Application-level 4k scaling issues are pretty much all over the place
  • If all you’re after is Linux on a laptop, you can do it for cheaper than the M3800’s starting price
  • I kind of hoped the Dell logo on the back would light up, but sadly it doesn’t
The Ugly
  • Battery life with the Nvidia GPU enabled is far too short for a day’s worth of working

NUC Linux Server

Intel Nuc D54250WYKH

The Intel NUC D54250WYKH has many useful features, including four USB 3.0 ports, an infrared sensor, a headphone/microphone jack, Mini HDMI*, and Mini DisplayPort* video interfaces, and extra space to accommodate 2.5-inch HDD or SSD drives to support a variety of home or small office usages.

  • The chubby NUC has room for a 2.5 Inch SSD which was great for my OS and still has the standard PCI Mini storage slot

  • Low noise profile, not silent. But very quiet, about three feet away I can’t hear it.

Performance of the NUC

The power consumption at the wall was measured with the display being driven through the mini-HDMI port. In the graphs below, we compare the idle and load power of the D54250WYK with other low power PCs evaluated before. For load power consumption, we ran Furmark 1.12.0 and Prime95 v27.9 together.

Moving Plex Media Server to another server

1 . Set up coming UID and GIDs between your NFS and app server.
2. When migrating, try to keep the same file paths. IE: /mnt/nfs was where I had the media nfs mount on the previous box.
3. Setup your fstab, when possible use systemd to mount so the mount is network aware.

Mount using /etc/fstab with systemd

Another method is using the systemd automount service. This is a better option than _netdev, because it remounts the network device quickly when the connection is broken and restored. As well, it solves the problem from autofs, see the example below:

/etc/fstab

servername:/home /mountpoint/on/client nfs users,noauto,x-systemd.automount,x-systemd.device-timeout=10,timeo=14,noatime 0 0

**Tip: **noauto above will not mount the NFS share until it is accessed: use auto for it to be available immediately.
If you have any issues with the mount failing due to the network not being up/available, enable NetworkManager-wait-online.service: this will ensure that network.target has all the links available prior to being active.

  1. Stop Plex on your current server.
  2. Copy your old Plex Media Server configs to the new server:
  • In general, the location for the various Linux versions of Plex Media Server will be found under:

    $PLEX_HOME/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/

Make sure that the directories and contents are all owned by plex:plex.

  • configurable episode renaming
  • available for any platform, uses simple HTTP interface
  • can notify XBMC, Growl, or Twitter when new episodes are available
  • specials and double episode support
  • Automatic XEM Scene Numbering/Naming for seasons/episodes
  • Episode Status Manager now allows for mass failing seasons/episodes to force retrying.
  • DVD Order numbering for returning the results in DVD order instead of Air-By-Date order.
  • Improved Failed handling code for shows.
  • DupeKey/DupeScore for NZBGet 12+
  • Searches both TheTVDB.com, TVRage.com and AniDB.net for shows, seasons, episodes
  • Importing of existing video files now allows you to choose which indexer you wish to have SickBeard search its show info from.
  • Your tvshow.nfo files are now tagged with a indexer key so that SickBeard can easily tell if the shows info comes from TheTVDB or TVRage.
  • Sports shows are now able to be searched for..

Moving btsync between servers

imgurlArea 11-10-14 15_22_16.png

  1. Copy down your paths and keys
  2. Shutdown btsync on your old system
  3. Depending on your version you need to remove the .sync folder, or the .Sync folders. Newest versionf of btsync will asking you if you want “take owner ship”.
  4. “Add Folder” and put your folder path in.
  5. Edit the sync listing and click “view key” then click update key.
    imgurlArea 11-10-14 15_23_46.png
  6. Post your orginal key you copied down early in. Now btsync will connect up to your peers.

Hey Chris and Matt, I thought I’d share this cool program BitHammer if you haven’t already heard of it. If you haven’t BitHammer searches out and bans BitTorrent users on your local sub-net. That means if you travel and work (Ohio LinuxFest), often using shared Wi-Fi. This is nice because many people have been plagued by rogue BitTorrent users who’ve crept onto these public hostpots either with a stolen/cracked password, or who lie (and the Wi-Fi owners) about it.

Howto Install Linux on Chromebook

Suggest: ‘Linux on Chromebook how to’ LAS episode

The Acer C720 Chromebook (and newer Chromebooks in general) features a “legacy boot” mode that makes it easy to boot Linux and other operating systems. The legacy boot mode is provided by the SeaBIOS payload of coreboot. SeaBIOS behaves like a traditional BIOS that boots into the MBR of a disk, and from there into your standard bootloaders like Syslinux and GRUB.

Accessing the superuser shell with Chrome OS installed

If you have configured Chrome OS already:

  • Open a crosh window with Ctrl + Alt + T.
  • Open a bash shell with the shell command.
  • Become superuser with sudo bash

Enabling the pre-installed version of SeaBIOS

This method will allow you to access the pre-installed version of SeaBIOS through the Developer Mode screen in coreboot.

  • Inside your superuser shell enter:

    crossystem dev_boot_usb=1 dev_boot_legacy=1

  • Reboot the machine.

You can now start SeaBIOS by pressing Ctrl + L at the white boot splash screen.

Remove the write-protect screw to Perma-Disable the boot message warning

By removing the bottom panel of the laptop by removing the 12 visible screws and another one underneath the warranty sticker, then separating the plastic starting at the back

Finally completely remove the write-protect screw from the motherboard, which is labelled as #7 in this picture

ChromeeOS will install elementary OS (with ChrUbuntu) and apply automatically all the necessary fixes to run elementary OS on Chromebooks. You will be able to boot in ChromeOS or elementary OS on your Chromebook.

Troubleshooting

Legacy Boot Doesn’t Work

Sometimes it’s possible to break the SeaBIOS install in the flash (sometimes doing innocuous things like tweaking the GBB flags). If you do get into such a situation:

  • Check that dev_boot_legacy is set to 1 when you run crossystem
    • If it isn’t, then see the normal Legacy Boot section above
    • if it is, then see below
You can safely reset the copy of SeaBIOS in your flash by running (as root):

# chromeos-firmwareupdate --sb_extract /tmp
# flashrom -w /tmp/bios.bin -i RW_LEGACY

sudo apt-get install owncloud

You can add the repository key to apt. Keep in mind that the owner of the key may distribute updates, packages and repositories that your system will trust (more information). To add the key, run:

As usual, Netbook is aimed at users who tend to do things online, but still want a pretty and professional looking desktop. It runs LXDE as the window manager, has Wbar as a dock, and comes complete with Firefox and TOR browser. Desktop 14.10 alpha is aimed at users who want a full-featured desktop Linux. It comes complete with LibreOffice, WINE, Java, VLC and a host of other applications. As with Netbook, it also comes with Firefox and TOR browser built in.” Here is the brief release announcement. Download (MD5): Desktop1410Alpha.iso (580MB), Netbook1410Alpha.iso (324MB).

cool-old-term is dead, long live cool-retro-term | Swordfish’s Labs

But why?… Well, cool-old-term was a sort of boilerplate name I chose at the beginning of the project and it stuck when the project became more popular. cool-retro-term keeps familiarity and has a very cool acronym so we can talk nerdy: “Have you tried CRT. It’s really great!”.

Dropbox Beefs Up Its Pro Feature Set, Now Offering 1TB Of Storage For $10/Month

Many Dropbox users start out as Basic users, but the company increasingly has been trying to get customers to upgrade and pay for storage. In 2011, the company launched Dropbox for Business, which has seen a fair amount of success in the years since. Dropbox says that it’s used within 4 million companies and 97 percent of Fortune 500 businesses, although not all of those companies are paying customers.

Until today, those so-called “prosumers” were paying $10 a month for 100 GB of storage, but they had a feature set that was pretty similar to the company’s Basic offering.

Dropbox is looking to offer Pro users a lot more storage and a lot more features than their Basic brethren, which it hopes will give a lot more people a reason to upgrade.

Dropbox Pro now offers 10x the storage that users previously got, boosting available capacity for each of its users to 1 TB for $10 a month. By doing so, Dropbox is matching pricing for Google Drive, which lowered its prices for a TB of storage earlier in the spring.

Another feature that is now available to Pro users is the ability to remotely wipe files from your Dropbox folder if your laptop happens to get lost or stolen. By doing so, any Dropbox files or folders that were connected to that device will no longer be accessible the next time that the computer, phone, or other device comes online. And if the device is recovered, users can easily reconnect it to their account.

Dropbox previously offered 200 GB for $20 a month and 500 GB for $50 a month, but with the increase in storage to 1 TB, it’s decided to drop those tiers. As a result, in the short term it could make slightly less money from users who paid a premium for their storage plans.

However, the company could easily make up the difference by increasing the number of Pro users who sign up.

BitTorrent Sync Gets New Interface, Links for Sharing

Version 1.4 is designed to fundamentally change the way users interact with the app by simplifying the sharing process. In that vein, Sync for Windows and OS X have a redesigned user interface to make it easier for sharing via a new workflow and customizable folder list for folders.

You can now right-click on a folder, select “Share with BitTorrent Sync” and then choose either Email (a preformatted message will show up and you’ll need to input the email addresses), Copy (the link will be put in your clipboard), or QR code (for mobile scanning).

The sender can set a given link to expire after a number of days or after a certain number of times it is used, and can also require confirmation to ensure that only the receiver can sync the data in question (this is on by default but can be turned off for less important transfers). If the receiver doesn’t have Sync version 1.4, the webpage will prompt them to install it.

Twitch is now bigger than CNN, MSNBC, and MTV during prime time | The Verge

The New York Times had a great data-driven article this morning about just how big Twitch has become. One year ago the video game live-streaming platform wasn’t even equal to HLN in size. Fast-forward to this summer and Twitch is bigger during prime-time hours than CNN, E!, or MSNBC, with occasional spikes that put it above MTV as well.

Right now Twitch has about 715,000 concurrent viewers during prime time, but will quickly eclipse that if its growth continues apace.

Samsung’s Gear S smartwatch doesn’t need a phone to get online or make calls

The Gear S (not Solo) has a twist: there’s a 3G modem inside.

That means that even when outside the range of a Bluetooth-connected phone or WiFi, it can still send and receive messages or make calls.

It has a 2-inch AMOLED screen plus a dual-core 1GHz CPU inside along with GPS, heart rate and motion sensors, all powered by a 300mAh battery Samsung says can last up to two days.

It runs Tizen instead of Android Wear.

In the run up to IFA next week Samsung is also introducing the Gear Circle headset.

The Gear Circle has a magnetic clasp so it fits around your neck while not in use, a touch sensor and battery with up to 11 hours of talk time.

Pairs with a phone over Bluetooth, letting users hear notifications, use voice commands or listen to music through the earbuds.

Both devices will go on sale in October, although there’s no word on a price for either.

Red Hat CTO unexpectedly quits, amid rumors of executive ‘friction’

No-one among the rank and file at Red Hat seem to have seen this coming. In a move the Linux giant’s staffers said was “shocking” and a “punch in the gut,” long-time Red Hat chief technology officer Brian Stevens has resigned.

In a short press release, the company announced: “Brian Stevens will step down as CTO.”

Stevens, whose Red Hat page was taken down minutes after the news was released, had been with Red Hat since 2001. Before that he had been the CTO at Mission Critical Linux, and a senior architect at Digital Equipment Company (DEC), where he worked on Digital’s Unix operating system, Digital Unix. Today it lives on as HP’s Tru64. In technical circles, he’s perhaps best known for his work on the X Window System

Some Red Hat employees speculated that Stevens may have left because friction between Stevens and Cormier.

Paul Cormier is Red Hat’s president of products and technologies.

They observed that CTO office had been moved out from underneath Cormier’s control some time back. However, no one said that was any kind of current feud that might have lead to this move.

Others suggested that perhaps Steven wanted to move up to a CEO slot and that would never happen within the company.

SpiderOak vs Bittorrent Sync:

System76

Brought to you by: System76

New from the System76 team: BeansBooks

– SpiderOak –

SpiderOak is a zero-knowledge encrypted data backup, share, sync, access and storage service. Online and multi-platform with 2GB of storage free for life.

We have many customers who use SpiderOak on headless servers. The initial
setup requires a simple workaround, and from there you can use the command line
options to implement all other tasks.

We are steadily releasing many of the tools and libraries that we created while
building SpiderOak as independent, generalized components. These can be found
under the code section.

– Bittorrent Sync –

Private and Secure. File transfers are encrypted. Your information is never stored on a server in the cloud and your data is protected by private keys.
