Senators Burr & Feinstein Look To Bring Back Bill To Outlaw Real Encryption

Julian Sanchez got his hands on one of a few prospective new drafts that are being floated around and has an analysis of the update. The draft that Sanchez has seen tries to fix some of the problems, but doesn’t really fix the main problems of the bill. As Sanchez points out he sees four major changes in the draft:

Ubuntu Touch OTA-13 to Be Released on September 14, Add Numerous Improvements

The biggest attractions of the OTA-13 update will be support for Android 6.0 BSP (Board Support Packages), which opens the gate to new Ubuntu Phones and Tablets, and repowerd, a new power manager that promises major battery life improvements. There should also be copy-paste support.

AndEX Project Brings Android 7.0 Nougat with GAPPS & Linux Kernel 4.4 to Your PC

AndEX project based on Google’s recently released Android 7.0 Nougat mobile operating system.

3.0.1 Digital Painting App Arrives with New Threshold Filter, Many Changes

Name: Dumitru D

Message: Hey guys, thanks so much for all the shows you do. Check out this video I found of Linux! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpDdGOKZ3dg

Name: James S
Subject: Switched to an Arch-based distro

Message: I recently made the jump to Parabola GNU/Linux (essentially Arch, but using the Linux-libre kernel and FSF supported) and I am very glad that I did. I now have the latest packages available at my fingertips and I don’t have to worry about support running out. I’m not going to lie, I was skeptical about installing an Arch-based distro (being a Debian/Ubuntu/Trisquel guy for the past… I don’t know how many years), but the experience of going through and installing an Arch-based distro from the ground up was worth it.

And one last thing… systemd… this init system is so freaking easy to use. I know what the hype is all about now. Love it. Love it. Love it.

Oh, and one final thing (I promise), I am enjoying using Gnome as my desktop environment after using i3 for a while.

Great show. Keep it up.

Ubuntu 16.04 Review Follow Up

Few things that were not mentioned in LAS:

  • new option to always show menu has been added
  • client side decoration is fully supported in Unity
  • Gnome Calendar is installed by default
  • Empathy has been removed similar to Brasero as not many people use desktop IM clients
  • Startup Disk Creator have been update, and actually works
  • Gnome Software has proper notifications (what Noah was saying has been fixed)
  • Music and Messaging menus are dynamic now, for example if you use VLC to play media only controls for that player show up
  • Unity now support 3rd party themes better
  • most software are set to optional, so you can uninstall a key software and it won’t break your system
  • The launcher, not only can you move it to the bottom, it also shows the icon of the application you launched to let the user know that it has been launched and is loading (for slower computers, this will help the user from accidentally launching it again)
  • Launcher now properly shows different instances of nautilus (i.e. USB CD, Trash, Downloads, etc. are shown separately and not all clumped into one icon of Files)
  • Gnome Software got comments and rating support

Linux Academy

Follow Up Pt 2

Again, it’s the out-of-the-box experience on each of the desktop environments without any tweaking. There’s also some desktop environment developers that recommend running Linux games in their own X.Org Server, etc.

Daily Build of Gnome 16.04 using installation option to Erase Disk and Install fails with following message:
“The creation of swap space in Partition #5 of SCSi3(0,0,0) (sda) failed.

What Microsoft didn’t say when announcing the new editor was how it built Visual Studio Code. In a move that might seem a little surprising, given the regular animosity between the two companies, the editor is built on top of Chromium, the open source version of Google’s Chrome browser.

The app is built using an open source desktop application framework developed by GitHub called Electron. Electron uses HTML5, JavaScript, and other Web technologies, using Chromium for presentation, and io.js (a fork of node.js) to tie it all together.

Continuum is a big deal for Windows Phone—both a technological advance and a means of escape from its lonely island of misfit apps. Microsoft’s plan to bring more Android and iOS apps to Windows 10 is another encouraging sign for the platform. It’s no fun for Windows Phone faithfuls to have to upgrade, but perhaps the right to brag about Continuum’s talents will be worth the expense.

+ Microsoft Wants To Bring Azure To Your Data Center | TechCrunch

Azure Stack will bring Microsoft’s technologies for software-defined networking, pooling direct-attached storage, handling (and securing) virtual machines and monitoring this cloud to on-premise data centers. It’s essentially a new private cloud solution for IT pros and makes it easier for developers to scale their apps across their existing data centers and then boost to the cloud if they need more capacity on short notice.

  • Open source won.

Windows + Android?

Microsoft will most likely announce this week that it will enable customers to run Android apps on their Windows 10 phones, tablets and PCs. The timing ostensibly makes sense, as the software giant’s Build conference, held this week in San Francisco, targets developers. But I wonder what message this change will send to developers and users, especially at a time when the company is also pushing a universal app strategy centered on Windows.

Spotify, RunKeeper, and other Android apps get their own Google Now cards

Spotify can recommend playlists based on your listening history; the same is true for TuneIn Radio and YouTube. Zipcar will remind users when their car reservation is set to expire and provide quick links for navigating to the drop-off location or extending the rental. Fitness apps from RunKeeper, Jawbone, and Adidas can now remind you of your daily goals and encourage you to work toward them. You can keep up with breaking news by enabling cards from ABC News, Circa, or Feedly. And there’s even an OpenTable Google Now card that will let you pay your dinner bill with a tap.

Announcing the next Ubuntu Online Summit

While the focus on development in the last few cycles has been on shaping up and implementing the phone, this doesn’t mean other key parts of the project have been left out. The phone has helped create the platform and tools that will ultimately bring all these projects together, into a converged code base and user experience. From desktop to phone, to the cloud, to things, and back to the desktop.

Dev Tool:

So, I’m going to try something radical. As of today, I’m making Zed my day-time job.

I’ve launched a company to further develop Zed, with the goal to, over time, earn enough money on it to support me and my family, and to continue developing Zed into something great.

While an obvious option to make Zed profitable would be to make it proprietary and sell licenses, I won’t be doing that. I think there’s a lot of value for users in the fact that their editor is open source, in terms of hackability and longevity. Also, since I’m a company of one — for the foreseeable future — I think the best way to compete is if when the community helps out with enhancement and bug fixes, as it does already. So, Zed will remain open source.

Scott Guthrie, Executive Vice President of Cloud and Enterprise, announced the decision today is part of a broader initiative called .NET Foundation, the company’s move to open source multiple .NET components. T

Dev Hoopla: Build 2014

Microsoft open sources .NET compiler platform “Roslyn” and announces open source .NET Foundation initiative

At its Build 2014 conference today, Microsoft announced it is open sourcing its .NET compiler platform “Roslyn” – and then did exactly that, live on stage. Microsoft’s Anders Hejlsberg hit the button to make the project public on Codeplex.

For those who don’t know, Roslyn is a set of APIs for exposing the Microsoft C# and Visual Basic .NET compilers as services available at runtime. It includes versions of the C# and VB.NET compilers written in the languages themselves; in other words, the compilers are available via the traditional command-line programs, as well as APIs available natively from within .NET code.

Mobile-tool maker Xamarin, with whom Microsoft was partnering (rather than fighting/fearing, as some inside the company did initially) was a key advisor, Somasegar said. Some inside Microsoft were initially leery of Xamarin\’s goal to help .Net developers write apps that worked on Android and iOS because those platforms competed with Windows. But over time, Microsoft became more friend than foe to Xamarin — so much so that rumors are continuing to swirl that Microsoft may be negotiating to buy Xamarin.

Microsoft\’s open sourcing of .Net: The back story

Soma Somasegar, the Corporate Vice President of Microsoft\’s Developer Division, told me during an interview at Build 2014 last week that the work around open-sourcing more of .Net began three years ago.

Windows will be free on phones, small tablets and the Internet of Things

The company has announced that Windows will be free for hardware makers to use on phones, tablets with screens under nine inches and Internet of Things devices.

Microsoft is bringing the Start Menu back

Microsoft announced a new Start Menu that looks like a hybrid of the best of Windows 7 and Windows 8. It\’s around the same size as the Windows 7 menu, but also features miniature Live Tiles along one side.

Microsoft also showed a new mode that allows modern Windows 8 apps to run in the desktop environment inside their own windows.

Xbox One < WinRT?

The key gist is simple: this week, Microsoft made its pitch to developers to build for its two key, and connected, platforms, Windows and Windows Phone. The shared Windows core of each was an obviously important topic both in keynotes, and sessions.

In a nutshell, this was our experience covering Microsoft Build 2013 this week at the Moscone Center.

\”I\’m not diminishing Sony\’s performance claims and I wasn\’t trying to be arrogant or dismissive,\” Penello wrote in a NeoGAF thread which reacted to his initial comment: \”The problem is that Sony decided to go out and publish a bunch of numbers, which are in some ways meaningless\”.

Retake: OYUA

On paper, the specs of the next-gen Android console seem formidable enough. The Ouya runs on a vidia Tegra 3 Quad-core 1.7GHz CPI and is accompanied by a 520MHz Nvidia GeForce ULP GPU, offers 1GB DDR3 memory and 8GB of internal flash memory storage, operates on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with a custom Oyua user interface, and features a wireless controller.
