Massively: Dev Q&A from STLV Convention

  • Over-the-shoulder icon to more clearly indicate Borg Adaptation in shooter mode
  • New ground set coming with STF revamps unlocks a new cosmetic look
  • They’ll also be split into Ground and Space sections to facilitate shorter timetables
  • When asked about more functionality in Social Zones, the topic of a new ground combat area was brought up in response (another hint at a Defera revamp?)
  • New borg loot drop tables will include all existing Valor and Emblem loots
  • When asked about Terradome, Gozer indicated it may not remain an STF in the future.
  • Also hinted that ALL missions (including STFs) would at some point become playable at all levels, and auto-scale to players’ levels.

DANIEL STAHL STAYS STUFF … UPDATE

First, in a thread about the Rhode Island and future variants, he lays details on us about ships to come, and balance philosophies moving forward…

  • 16 new ships/variants coming, each with a new mechanic that adds tactical options.
  • The new “time-based” currency (Dilithium) will be earnable by all players, at all levels.
  • Existing badges/emblems will be translated into Dilithium.
  • It will soon be possible to trade Dilithium to other players, for C-Store points.
  • Worried other players won’t trade? There is an “enormous vault” of unspent points out there.
  • These economy changes are scheduled for Sept 22nd.

Then, he talks about the C-Store and budget concerns of the past…

  • Subscriptions are a steady and predictable budget to plan by, but if MTs become steady and predictable enough they can also be planned with.
  • Kind of similar to this show in a way… advertisers (when we have them) allow us to plan our expenses out far in advance, while DONATIONS allow us to expand and take risks or cover unexpected costs, when the funds are available.

And then tells us a bit about the future…

  • Despite the current forum grumbling, subscriptions are UP.
  • “So love it or hate it, we are where we are and I will continue to be frank and open about what is going on to ensure you are informed of where STO is headed.”

What is making STO’s future rosey? Perfect World of course!

  • “They (PW) are playing STO themselves and sending me lists of requests and I’m sending back “here’s how many people I needs”… so to answer you question…. STO is about to get more support than it has had in recent months.”

It’s time to put the focus back onto Fleets…

During the existing content lull, it has fallen to us players to make the game enjoyable on a regular recurring basis when there’s no new shiny toys to keep our attention on a regular basis. This responsibility frequently falls to community leaders, which in this game, are Fleets.

Our question for you: How do you keep your Fleet going strong?

As examples, we’d like to share with you some of the activities that Jupiter Force engages in on a regular basis. And I’d like to preface that we do not run or propose these activities, we’re only figureheads in the fleet, not leaders. So don’t think we’re just bragging here. If anything, we’re giving credit where it’s due to the folks that run this fleet so well.

1) Regularly scheduled events
The in-game calendar can take a little getting used-to, and getting your fleetmates to check it regularly can be a task unto itself. But enough encouragement and involvement can be a self-perpetuating cycle.
* Special themed PvP matches (pistols/melee only, shuttles/runabouts only, etc)
* STF timeslots for newbies, with pre-made teams of 3–4 experts.
* etc, etc.

2) Recognition of involvement
Whether you use a complex system of rank promotions, or handing out in-game loots, all fleet members will strive that much more to be a part of the community, if you give them a reason to try for it.
* JF has just implemented a system of Ribbons that can be added to forum posts, and are earned primarily via participation in Fleet Events.

General Tips:
– If you’re new, get experienced players to lead you through. There’s plenty out there now.
– Voice chat is highly recommended. (Vivox coming soon!)
– Follow directions. Or if you’re leading, give clear directions that are easy to follow!
– Do not progress any dialog pop-ups until the Team Leader gives the OK, or does it him/herself.
– Do not go in unprepared! Make sure you have a solid spec that plays to the specific strengths of both your Space AND Ground abilities.

SPACE:
Zip around BEHIND the gate, and do not activate the two popups until the team is in position.
With high DPS, you may be able to destroy the gate in a single activation sequence.
If you destroy the gate without killing transmitters, you get better loot.
If you do not destroy the gate in a single activation, you will be faced with 3-4 waves of borg ships that get progressively more and more powerful with each wave.

Good Space Boff Abilities:
Hazard Emitters (practically a must-have)
Tactical Team
A lot of DPS/buffs/debuffs
Gravity Well — good for chain reactions on warp cores!

Tactical Cubes have a ~5km explosion radius. If you are trying to keep the Transmitters alive, and have a Tac Cube spawned, be sure to lure it away from them before destroying the cube.

Pull him OUT of his room, into the hallway.
He will stop and summon friends halfway through the fight. If you are in the hallway, they will not join the battle.

END BOSS: Manus
Get into the alcoves on the wall opposite from the entry doorway.
This blocks line of sight between group members (meaning, no heals!), which prevents her “chain lightning” attack from hitting more than one target at a time.

DABO!

There’s necessarily a bunch of number crunching, and there’s no way that you can ‘cheat’ the system.  But thanks entirely to a very dedicated fan of Dabo (@RachelGarrett!), I do have some details and mechanics I can share with you.

The first thing you should know, is how to read the board.  Each symbol on the wheels is a combination of a suit (color), shape, and a number.  There are 3 possible version of each of these 3 variables.  This means that there are a total of 27 different combinations (3x3x3), each of which are represented only once on the board.

The innermost ring on the wheel is a wildcard where color is concerned.

In addition to the 27 symbols, there are also a number of miscellaneous symbols that increase the payout of any line they land on.

  • The so called Swirl is a joker, that can act as any color, shape or count
  • Two or more Quarks give a high payout. (looks kinda like a golden scarab)
  • DS9 icons work like Quarks, but have a lower multiplier
  • A black hole will match with nothing

Of note:  There is only ONE Black Hole per line on the board.  That means that the worst possible spin, is to get all 3 of those lined up, and win nothing.  But, if you bet on 3 lines at a time, your odds of winning something actually increase, because you can never hit this combo on two lines at the same time.  Which is another way of saying, always bet on 3 lines!  Your odds of winning increase!

ODDS!

There are SO many different ways to win, and SO many different payouts, that it’s actually completely possible to calculate an average payout for playing.

The longer you play, the closer to get to a basic exchange rate where, for every 100EC you spend playing dabo, you’ll win (on average) 88 GPL.

Now, this also means that you can easily calculate the actual EC value of all of Woody’s goods by multiplying the cost by 114%.  This ALSO means that it’s relatively easy to calculate an estimate of how much EC it will cost to get the top dabo-related accolade, which is winning 1million GPL.  By multiplying that by 1.14, you can estimate that you’ll need about 1,140,000 EC in order to achieve all of the available accolades.

This week features a ship-heavy news segment, wherein we discuss the merits and limitations of the Excelsior and Nebula, as well as give you an update on the state of the infamous Enterprise J.  After that, we’ll give you our impressions and brief opinions regarding the first of the new weekly Deferi missions:  “Cold Call.”

The Excelsior Class is OUT:

  • Transwarp Drive that can be activated in system space for rapid travel to the Alpha Centauri, Sirius, Regulus, Pi Canis, Psi Velorum, Iota Pavonis, Eta Eridani, Beta Ursae and Alpha Trianguli Sector Blocks.
  • This ship may only be purchased by Federation captains that have attained Rear Admiral or higher rank.

Early information on the Nebula Class:
Nebula

  • A StarCruiser variant (Its not a Retrofit. It utilizes the StarCruiser Skill).
    • Interesting that a Sovereign alternative has a special ability.
  • Unique Ability: Tachyon Detection Grid: PBAoE buff that increases your, and allies w/in 10k, Starship Sensor Stat and Cloak Detection. Each buffed ally in turn will buff more allies within 10k of them – thus extending the grid.
  • Has a UNIVERSAL boff slot
    • Same boff arrangement as DSSV, only second science became universal
  • Ugliest Ship EVVVVAAAARRR.

Enterprise J Grounded:
Daniel Stahl (STO’s EP) writes in the STO forum:

We are not making a 2 mile long Enterprise J. In fact I think we should just stop saying the Enterprise J is coming, because Enterprise J refers to a very specific ship that I can confirm we are not making.
The idea is – we want to make a ship that moves ship designs closer towards the J, but based on internal discussions we are not going to be making the J as it appeared in Enterprise. It is going to be some other ship between now and then. J was just a way of saying a forward looking ship like the J.

Ship Energy Levels and YOU!
 
UI Explanation:
Postures:  Attack, Defend, Speed, Balanced
Type I:  Current Energy / Energy Setting
Type II:  Visual representation, updated live
Type III:  Same as II, but with customization and Save/Reset buttons for presets
 
What They Effect:
WEAPON ENERGY:  Energy Weapon damage output (Torpedoes and Mines are unaffected by current level, but unable to fire when at 0 power)
SHIELD ENERGY:  Shield regen rate (note:  Does NOT affect total shield strength)
ENGINE ENERGY:  Movement speed
AUXILIARY ENERGY:  Hull Repair, Turn Rate, Stealth Detection, and many “Sciencey” abilities’ amplititude (e.g. Tachyon Beam, Tyken’s Rift, etc.)
 
WEAPONS SYSTEM:
Power Level = % of affect
100 – 200
75 – 150
50 – 100
25 – 50
 
In other words = 2% difference (up or down) per point of Power above or below a setting of 50.
 
This only affects the power of the weapon when it leaves your ship, and not when it impacts the enemy.  All energy weapons are also affected by the distance between yourself and your target, to varying degrees and will deal more damage the closer you are to your target. (cannons seem to be more affected than beams)
 
Your current available Weapon Energy is drained each time you fire an energy weapon.  The amount of drain depends on the type of weapon you are firing, and the number of weapons firing simultaneously.  Watch your power level in combat, and make sure you’re not over-draining your weapon power, as you will end up doing LESS damage over time if your Weapon Energy dips too low on a regular basis.  If you regularly see your Weapon Power dipping well below the level it is set at, it may be a good idea to swap in a lower-power weapon type.
 
Weapon Power Drain amounts per shot:
Beam Arrays and all cannon types = drain 10 power (beams drain more frequently than cannons, allowing less time to regen)
Turrets = drain 8 power 
 
You can offset the drain of Energy Weapons by investing in EPS Flow Regulator (Engineering Consoles).  You can also use batteries or Emergency Power abilities to quickly recharge.
 
SHIELDS SYSTEM:
Power Level = % of base regen
100 – 300
75 – 200
50 – 100
25 – 0 (!!)
 
In other words = 4% difference (up or down Bryan’s Penis) per point of Energy Level above or below a setting of 50.
 
Unlike weapons, shield tooltips do not update on the fly along with your Shield Power.
 
SUB-TOPIC: Rebalancing Shield Quadrants, to maximize Regen…
 
Shield regeneration is applied to all four quadrants of your shields, every 6 seconds (aka, per tick).  Let’s say you have a regen rate of 100.  If you have 3 maxed out quadrants, and one that is damaged, you are only regenerating 25 shield power / tick.  However, if you rebalance your shield power so that all 4 are slightly damaged, you will regenerate essentially 25*4 = 100 shield power / tick.  Obviously it’s not always a good idea to weaken ALL of your shields.  However, doing so when you are not under direct fire is ALWAYS recommended.  Especially before using an ability that increases your Shield Regen (e.g. Emergency Power to Shields, Science Team, etc).
 
ENGINE SYSTEM:
The math to figure out your exact speed is complicated and involved, and I don’t have time to go into all of it right now.
 
Suffice it to say that your energy level directly impacts your speed, but the following are also factors that will always figure into it:
 
– 0 Engine Power (system offline) will cause you to stop, AND cut your turn rate to almost nothing.
– For Feds, each ship type has a different variable that causes them to go different speeds, with the same engines (Cruisers and Science are slower than Escorts)
– For KDF, check the “Impulse Modifier” listed in the ship stats at the Shipyard consoles.
– Engine types have different base modifiers.  Fastest to Slowest = Hyper Impulse, Combat Impulse, Impulse
– Your max bonus is controlled and normalized by the Tier of ship.
– Engine Power does not appear to have any affect on your Warp Speed (in Sector Space).
 
AUXILIARY SYSTEM:
TURN RATE – Just like Engine speed, it’s very complicated.  But here’s a few quick tips:
 
– 0 Aux Power (system offline) will cause you to be almost completely unable to turn.
– Tier 1 and 2 ships are easier to get to turn faster.  Tier 3+ ships have a built-in modifier that is meant to normalize the “high-end” ship bonus skills.  (In essence, they force you to invest points in the ship type, to get them to move comparably to lower-tier ships).
– Turn Rate is calculated in “Degrees per Second” which is unaffected by your Engine SPEED.
– Turn Rate modifiers (such as those on consoles and engines) are % bonuses to your ship’s turn rate, and are not directly additive.
– The total possible bonus (or penalty) of a high (or low) Aux power level is never going to turn a Cruiser into an Escort (or vice versa).
– Escorts will benefit far more from Aux, due to a higher innate Turn Rate.
 
HULL REPAIR – Bryan’s Penis Calculations unknown.  Sorry! 
 
– Also affected by Crew Levels, and passive skills.
– The longer the battle, the more Hull Repair will matter.
– Hull Repair is always % based, so larger/beefier ships will repair more per tick than smaller ships, with the same Captain.
 
STEALTH DETECTION –
 
– Base is determined by ship type:  Escorts/Cruisers are 33% that of Science Ship detection rate.
– Also based on all of the following:  Starship Operations Training, Starship Sensors stat (from items + skills), Starship Sensor Array stat (from items + skills)
– After the “base” detection rate is found (using the above + innate based on ship type), MULTIPLIED BY AUXILIARY in same manner as Weapon Power.
 
ABILITY MODIFIER –
 
– Determined on a per-power basis.  Can affect Duration and/or Magnitude.
– Does NOT always affect abilities.  To check:  Tooltips will update on-the-fly if they are affected by Aux (but not always in Sector Space)
