Apple Watch iPhone ‘Companion’ app revealed w/ new Watch features, monograms

Yesterday, we reported that the latest iOS 8.2 beta reveals that an Apple Watch application for the iPhone is in the works. Now, we have some more details. Within Apple, the application is currently called the Apple Watch “Companion” app for iPhone. This application manages settings for Apple Watch applications, as well as settings for iPhone/Watch interactivity. The Companion app’s settings reveal some novel new functions that are coming to the Apple Watch. Below, we highlight some of the most interesting new features and settings.

“New Nintendo 3DS XL” to launch in US on February 13 for $200 [Updated] | Ars Technica

Nintendo confirmed the Feb. 13 US release date reported below in a Nintendo Direct presentation this morning, also announcing a suggested retail price of $199.99.

There was no mention of a standard-sized version of the system for the US, suggesting the XL-sized version will be the only one available in this country for the time being. Nintendo did announce a special edition gold version of the console, styled with The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask art, to promote the Feb. 13 launchof Majora’s Mask 3D.

The base package won’t include an AC Adapter, but customers can re-use any AC adapter from previous DSi or 3DS systems, or purchase one separately, Nintendo said.

Wiretapping ATMs

• “Banks in Europe are warning about the emergence of a rare, virtually invisible form of ATM skimmer involving a so-called “wiretapping” device that is inserted through a tiny hole cut in the cash machine’s front. The hole is covered up by a fake decal, and the thieves then use custom-made equipment to attach the device to ATM’s internal card reader.”
• “The criminals cut a hole in the fascia around the card reader where the decal is situated,” EAST described in a recent, non-public report. “A device is then inserted and connected internally onto the card reader, and the hole covered with a fake decal”
• “It’s where a tap is attached to the pre-read head or read head of the card reader,” Lachlan said. “The card data is then read through the tap. We still classify it as skimming, but technically the magnetic stripe [on the customer/victim’s card] is not directly skimmed as the data is intercepted.”
• So, they attach to the REAL card reader, and siphon off a copy of the data as the card is read
• That makes this form of skimming pretty much undetectable (except possibly by the fake decal used to cover the hole cut in the front of the ATM)
• The Krebs article also talks about new “insert transmitter skimmers”, that use a small battery and transmit the skimmed data a short distance, meaning the attacker does not have to return to the scene of the crime to collect the stolen data, decreasing their risk of getting caught
• “It’s best to focus instead on protecting your own physical security while at the cash machine. If you visit an ATM that looks strange, tampered with, or out of place, try to find another ATM. Use only machines in public, well-lit areas, and avoid ATMs in secluded spots”
• “Last, but certainly not least, cover the PIN pad with your hand when entering your PIN: That way, if even if the thieves somehow skim your card, there is less chance that they will be able to snag your PIN as well. You’d be amazed at how many people fail to take this basic precaution. Yes, there is still a chance that thieves could use a PIN-pad overlay device to capture your PIN, but in my experience these are far less common than hidden cameras (and quite a bit more costly for thieves who aren’t making their own skimmers).”

Bug naming and shaming

• This article discusses the advantages and disadvantages to having named and branded bugs like Heartbleed, as well as some behind the scenes info on that exploit, and the people behind the naming of various other vulnerabilities since then
• “If the bug is dangerous enough, it gets a name. Heartbleed’s branding changed the way we talk about security, but did giving a bug a logo make it frivolous… or is this the evolution of infosec?”
• Heartbleed was discovered some time before Friday, March 21, 2014 by a Google security researcher. It was later shared with Open SSL, Red Hat, CloudFlare, Facebook, and Akamia
• Finnish security company Codenomicon separately discovered Heartbleed on April 3, and informing the National Cyber Security Centre Finland the next day”
• They then immediately went to work on a marketing plan. This discovery was going to launch their small firm into super stardom. They had a logo and website designed, and prepared for the public disclosure of the bug
• The original public disclosure was supposed to be made on April 9th. However, after details started to leak, and the OpenSSL team decided that if more than 1 group had already discovered the bug, more would quickly follow, they released the details early, on April 7th
• “Half an hour after OpenSSL published a security advisory the morning of April 7, CloudFlare bragged in a blog post and a tweet that it was first to protect its customers, and how CloudFlare was enacting an example for “responsible disclosure.”
• “An hour after CloudFlare’s little surprise, Codenomicon tweeted to announce the bug, now named Heartbleed, linking to a fully prepared website, with a logo, and an alternate SVG file of the logo made available for download.”
• “Heartbleed — birth name CVE-2014-0160 — became a household term overnight, even though average households still don’t actually understand what it is.”
• “The media mostly didn’t understand what Heartbleed was either, but its logo was featured on every major news site in the world, and the news spread quickly. Which was good, because for the organizations who needed to remediate Heartbleed, it was critical to move fast.”
• In the end, it seems Heartbleed was a success, most systems were patched quite quickly, although many systems did not follow the full procedure, and that has had some fallout that we have covered
• In justifying the name given to a Russian hacking group, iSight Partners said: “Without naming these teams, it would be impossible for a network defender to keep track of them all. We think that’s essential, because intimately understanding these teams is the first step to mounting an effective defense. Giving a name to a team — as we have done with Sandworm — helps practitioners and researchers track and attribute tactics, techniques, procedures and ongoing campaigns back to the team. By assigning identities, It helps to bring these actors out of the shadows and into the light.“
• Other vulnerabilities, like POODLE, had alarmingly bad reporting that may have done more harm than good
• ShellShock was the anti-case. It didn’t have a logo, or an official website. ShellShock timeline
• It was actually originally dubbed BashDoor by its creator, but when it was leaked to the press by someone else, they provided the name ShellShock
• Further, because the initial fix for the ShellShock vulnerability did not entirely solve the problem, there was much confusion, where people thought they had already patched, but didn’t have the “latest” patch
• Then, there were a number of follow-on vulnerabilities in bash, that didn’t have names, but were lumped in with ShellShock, which lead to even more confusion
• Closing Quote: “The researchers didn’t tell their closest biz-buddies in a game of telephone, one in which Heartbleed became an arms race of egos, insider information trading, and opportunism”
• Who gets to decide what bugs are bad enough to get a name instead of just a CVE number? Should MITRE start tracking names along with the CVE numbers?
• Who gains more for naming bugs, the end users who might become more aware of the issue and be able to protect themselves, or the PR powered firms that exploit it for their own good?

Samsung unveils Project Beyond, a 3D-capturing camera for Gear VR

Samsung has just unveiled a sneak preview of a new camera called Project Beyond, which is a 3D-capturing 360-degree camera designed to capture videos and stream them on the Gear VR. Pranav Mistry, Samsung’s VP of Research, says that Beyond is a “new kind of camera that gives a new kind of immersive experience.” The camera (which apparently houses 16 full HD cameras) shows a 360-degree panoramic view and captures everything in 3D, collecting a gigapixel of 3D data every second. It promises high-speed connectivity, adaptive stitching, ultra wide-angle optics and stereoscopic depth. And, this isn’t just a concept. It’s actually a fully working device.

Samsung launching Gear VR ‘Innovator Edition’ in early December for $199 | The Verge

You’ll be able to get your hands on Samsung’s Gear VR in early December. Today the company announced that it will launch the Gear VR Innovator Edition — essentially what amounts to developer preview hardware (that’s available to everyone) — next month.

Gear VR: $199 for the headset alone, or $249 with one of Samsung’s Bluetooth gamepads. Add that to the cost of a Note 4 — $700 or more, unsubsidized — and it’s not one of the cheaper VR headsets on the market.

91% of US adults say consumers have lost control over how their personal info is collected and used by companies | Pew Research

Some 43% of adults have heard “a lot” about “the government collecting information about telephone calls, emails, and other online communications as part of efforts to monitor terrorist activity,” and another 44% have heard “a little.” Just 5% of adults in our panel said they have heard “nothing at all” about these programs.

Widespread concern about surveillance by government and businesses

Perhaps most striking is Americans’ lack of confidence that they have control over their personal information. That pervasive concern applies to everyday communications channels and to the collectors of their information—both in the government and in corporations. For example:

• 91% of adults in the survey “agree” or “strongly agree” that consumers have lost control over how personal information is collected and used by companies.
• 88% of adults “agree” or “strongly agree” that it would be very difficult to remove inaccurate information about them online.
• 80% of those who use social networking sites say they are concerned about third parties like advertisers or businesses accessing the data they share on these sites.
• 70% of social networking site users say that they are at least somewhat concerned about the government accessing some of the information they share on social networking sites without their knowledge.

HTC’s Desire Eye wants to be the king of selfies | The Verge

Now HTC is announcing the Desire Eye, a mid-range phone that the company says will be the selfie phone to rule them all. It will be available from AT&T later this year at a price that’s yet to be determined. Where all other smartphones have their best cameras on the back of the phone, the Desire Eye has the same camera on the front as it does on the back. It’s a 13-megapixel camera — the highest resolution front-facing camera to date — and features autofocus, a dual LED flash on both the front and back of the phone, and 1080p video recording.

It has a 5.2-inch, 1080p display that looks great and has wide viewing angles. It has the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor paired with 2GB of RAM as HTC’s flagship One M8. Its soft-touch plastic finish isn’t as premium as the all-metal chassis’ of the M8 or iPhone 6.

It’s IPX7 water resistant, so it can be dunked under a meter of water for up to 30 minutes without issue.

There’s a mode to take a picture with both the front and rear cameras at the same time, a la FrontBack, and an ultra-gimmicky mode that lets you insert yourself into a scene using both cameras. You can also merge your face with another person’s face to create a mutant selfie.

HTC Re camera Preview – CNET

The little periscope-shaped camera (right-angle flashlight and asthma inhaler are also suitable) is designed so that you stop watching and recording life through your smartphone’s screen and get in on the experience instead.

At the business end you have an f2.8 lens with an ultrawide 146-degree angle of view with a 1/2.3-inch 16-megapixel CMOS sensor behind it. That sensor is bigger than what you’d find in most smartphones, but average for point-and-shoot cameras and most POV/action cams.

The Re connects to your smartphone via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Launch the Re app (which will be available for Android and iOS later this year) and it initiates the connection process via Wi-Fi. Once connected you can control the camera, view and transfer content and change settings. With the app you can also activate a time-lapse mode so you can take a series of photos over a period of time (you set the frequency and length of time) and turn them into a movie.

Along with the tripod mount on the bottom you’ll find a Micro-USB port and a microSD card slot for storage. An 8GB card is included, but the camera supports cards up to 128GB.

Though HTC pitches the Re more as a lifestyle cam like Polaroid’s Cube than a rugged action cam for extreme sports, the body is waterproof to 1 meter (3.3 feet) for up to 30 minutes without an additional housing.

The HTC Re camera will be coming to the US first in late October/early November and the UK in November. It’ll cost $199 and somewhere around £160-£170 in the UK.

Google Patches Chrome for 159 Security Vulnerabilities

In total, Google is patching 159 security vulnerabilities in Chrome 38, which is one of the highest numbers of security-related fixes for any single browser ever released. Going a step further, Google noted that it also made “113 relatively minor fixes” that it found with its open-source Memory Sanitizer application. Other browser vendors likely might have also counted the 113 memory fixes in their security totals, so for argument’s sake, let’s say that Chrome 38 fixes 272 security related issues.

As part of the security updates, Google is paying out $75,633.70 in bug bounties to a number of security researchers for properly reporting issues to Google. The top award is a $27,633.70 award paid to Jüri Aedla for a vulnerability identified as CVE-2014-3188. That vulnerability could lead to remote code execution and is triggered by a number of bugs in the Google V8 JavaScript engine and the Inter-Process Communication (IPC) function.

Apple has just announced a keynote address for Thursday, October 16th to take place at the Town Hall auditorium on its Infinite Loop Campus in Cupertino, California. Firefox OS and Ubuntu Touch on the Nexus 5

MultiROM Manager – Android Apps on Google Play

**This app only works on Nexus 7 (2012 & 2013), Nexus 4 and Nexus 5, as they are the only devices officially supported by MultiROM.
This application requires root and it is designed to be used by experienced “power users”.

It is strongly recommended to read XDA thread before installing this app, you can find links at the bottom of this description.**

MultiROM Manager can install or update MultiROM, it’s recovery and kernels. It can also install Ubuntu Touch system-image based builds into MultiROM as a secondary ROM.

MultiROM is one-of-a-kind multi-boot mod for Nexus 7 (2012 and 2013) and Nexus 4. It can boot any Android ROM as well as other systems like Ubuntu Touch. Besides booting from device’s internal memory, MultiROM can boot from USB drive connected to the device via OTG cable. The main part of MultiROM is a boot manager, which appears every time your device starts and lets you choose ROM to boot. You can see how it looks on the left image below and in gallery. ROMs are installed and managed via modified TWRP recovery. You can use standard ZIP files to install secondary Android ROMs, daily prebuilt image files to install Ubuntu Touch and MultiROM even has its own installer system, which can be used to ship other Linux-based systems.

• Nokia was testing Android on Lumias before Microsoft sale

Now, according to a new report from The New York Times, it turns out Nokia engineers did develop Lumia phones that ran Google\’s Android operating system. The report, which cites people familiar with the matter, says that Android was running on Nokia smartphones internally \”well before\” discussions that led to Microsoft\’s purchase of the company\’s handset division, which suggests that such efforts may have taken place in 2012 or early 2013. Additionally, it\’s said that while Microsoft knew about the project — and confirmed its existence to the _Times _—it \”wasn\’t a part of Microsoft\’s discussions\” prior to the acquisition.
