Mint 18 Review

Linux Mint 18: The best desktop — period

I’ve been using Linux desktops since the leading desktop front-end was Bash. Things have changed in those 25 years. Today, the best Linux desktop is the latest version of Linux Mint: Linux Mint 18 Sarah with the Cinnamon 3.0 interface.

Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon: Quick Screenshot Tour

Linux Mint 18 improves security, but at a cost – TechRepublic

While this is a much-needed improvement, the explanation of this change on the Linux Mint website is baffling. The website claims that kernel updates “aren’t really updates, but the availability of packages for newer kernels.” Aside from the fact that this is literally the definition of an update, this appears to be an attempt at minimizing the importance of kernel updates. In Linux Mint 18, users are only notified of kernel updates, but they are not installed by default.

As excited as we are about Linux Mint 18, upgrading blindly for the sake of running the latest version does not make much sense, especially if you’re already happy and everything is working perfectly.

Given the history of Linux Mint with their weird view on security (Linux
Mint is the very definition of a FrankenDebian [1]) where they withhold
important security updates because their weird mixture of packages would
otherwise break too often or their hijacking of package names (mdm, for
example), I don’t really trust them to come up with a clean design for
desktop agnostic applications. Heck, the first thing they wanted to do
was naming their forked version of Pluma “xedit”.

Next-Generation Secure Network Tunnel Announced For The Linux Kernel

It’s much simpler than anything before it, with peers exchanging short Curve25519 public keys just like in SSH. Secure network interfaces can be added and removed using the usual ‘ip-link’ and ‘ip-address’ tools. From there, everything is easily taken care of by the kernel, and secure tunnels are made quite simple. Not only that, but the performance is in fact better than IPsec, which is quite the accomplishment.”

Disclosure, I’ve reviewed various versions of the kernel code, over the past few months, and it seems sane, but note I am not a kernel networking developer :)

There are multiple vulnerabilities in ImageMagick, a package commonly used by web services to process images. One of the vulnerabilities can lead to remote code execution (RCE) if you process user submitted images. The exploit for this vulnerability is being used in the wild.

If you use ImageMagick or an affected library, we recommend you mitigate the known vulnerabilities by doing at least one of these two things (but preferably both!):

  • Verify that all image files begin with the expected “magic bytes” corresponding to the image file types you support before sending them to ImageMagick for processing. (see FAQ for more info)

  • Use a policy file to disable the vulnerable ImageMagick coders. The global policy for ImageMagick is usually found in “/etc/ImageMagick”. The below policy.xml example will disable the coders EPHEMERAL, URL, MVG, and MSL.

New encryption ransomware targets Linux systems

Many of the systems that have been affected by the malware were infected when attackers exploited a vulnerability in the Magento CMS. A critical vulnerability patch for Magneto, which is used to power a number of e-commerce sites, was published on October 31. Doctor Web researchers currently place the number of victims in the “at least tens” range, but attacks on other vulnerable content management systems could increase the number of victims dramatically.

In order to run, the malware has to be executed with administrator-level privileges. Using 128-bit AES crypto, the malware encrypts the contents of all users’ home directories and any files associated with websites running on the systems. It then goes through the whole directory structure of mounted volumes, encrypting a variety of file types. In each directory it encrypts, it drops a text file called README_FOR_DECRYPT.txt. This demands payment and provides a link to a Tor “hidden service” site via a Tor gateway.

Bitdefender researchers discovered that when it generates the AES keys, the malicious program uses a weak source of random data — the time and date at the moment of encryption.

This time stamp is easy to determine by looking at when the AES key files were created on disk. Therefore, researchers are able to reverse the process and recover the AES keys without needing to decrypt them, making the RSA public and private keys pointless.

The tool created and released by Bitdefender is a script written in Python that determines the initialization vectors and AES encryption keys by analyzing the files encrypted by the ransomware program. It then decrypts the files and fixes their permissions on the system.

“If you can boot your compromised operating system, download the script and run it under the root user,” the Bitdefender researchers said in a blog post that also contains detailed instructions on how to use the tool.

An abrupt End to Debian Live

Therefore, after having founded Debian Live back in 2006 and having by now almost 10 years continuously worked on it, without further ado:

Debian Live is dead, hijacked by the debian-cd and the debian-installer Teams

The live.debian.net server will be shut down end of month, the Git repositories are read-only as of now and mirrored to GitHub for archival

No, the story is more like this:

  • Debian live is created, widely used including by debian, but perhaps in some way not “officially” Debian (though this is unclear).
  • Debian CD team has some outstanding bugs with debian-live, which some members (but apparently not the lead dev) are aware of (or at least, not aware that they are major problems for debian-cd).
  • Someone creates a “successor” project called debian-live-ng that fixes these bugs, rather than fixing them in debian-live.
  • Debian CD is going to use this new project.
  • Lead developer of debian-live finds out about this scenario only when someone tries to push a package with the name live-build-ng (which conflicts with the live-* namespace used by debian-live), only to encounter a Debian CD team already dead-set on replacing and deprecating his project and overloading the package namespace with their new project without further discussion.

Or, in short, diplomacy, courtesy, and basic communication were neglected, and the inevitable happened.

Alien: Isolation has officially been released for Linux, and continues our trend of great AAA games. I would recommend playing this from behind a pillow, with emergency pants nearby.

Feedback:

This release, we focused on cleanup, polishing and quality-of-life
improvements, with over 400 issues fixed and dozens of new
translations. We have also gained two new frameworks: Solid, which
replaces liblxqt-mount and some custom power management code and
libkscreen, which replaces system xrandr calls and is wayland
forward-compatible.

The EPA says Volkswagen cheated on emissions testing again – YouTube

What route does someone who cares about this kinda stuff take. Do we just avoid all this stuff until its sorted out? I mean seriously, why not

The Volkswagen diesel crisis is an ongoing reminder of the dilemma that proprietary auto software and hardware is presenting for automakers and consumers. In September, VW disclosed that alleged “defeat devices” were installed in 2009-15 VW and Audi diesel cars. How was VW able to get away with this for so long? Because the automaker’s onboard software is protected against outside inspection.

But as shocking as Volkswagen’s fraud may be, it only heralds more of its kind. It’s time to address one of the most urgent if overlooked tech transparency issues—secret code in the criminal justice system. Today, closed, proprietary software can put you in prison or even on death row. And in most U.S. jurisdictions you still wouldn’t have the right to inspect it. In short, prosecutors have a Volkswagen problem.

Mr. Moglen, a lawyer, technologist and historian who founded the Software Freedom Law Center, has argued for decades that software ought to be transparent. That would best serve the public interest, he said in his 2010 speech.

“Software is in everything,” he said, citing airplanes, medical devices and cars, much of it proprietary and thus invisible. “We shouldn’t use it for purposes that could conceivably cause harm, like running personal computers, let alone should we use it for things like anti-lock brakes or throttle control in automobiles.”

On Tuesday, Mr. Moglen recalled the elevator in his hotel.

“Intelligent public policy, as we all have learned since the early 20th century, is to require elevators to be inspectable, and to require manufacturers of elevators to build them so they can be inspected,” he said. “If Volkswagen knew that every customer who buys a vehicle would have a right to read the source code of all the software in the vehicle, they would never even consider the cheat, because the certainty of getting caught would terrify them.”

But on Tuesday, the Library of Congress issued exemptions to DMCA that pleased many auto enthusiasts. In a ruling that also freed those who wish to modify tablets and smart TVs, the LOC said, more or less, monkey away.

Russia will fork Sailfish OS to shut out pesky Western spooks

Russia’s Minister of Communications and Mass Media, Nikolai Nikiforov, has taken part in talks to form a consortium that will aid Russia in developing a custom mobile OS, reportedly a forked version of Jolla’s Sailfish OS, to lessen its dependence on Western technology.

Nikiforov held a working meeting last week with the leadership of Hong Kong-based Sailfish Holdings, developer of the quietly admired Sailfish OS.

Alongside other participants, the parties involved discussed the use of open-source software in the public and private sectors, taking into account technical, economic and political factors, the latter of which is expected to include United States’ interference with exported technologies.

openSUSE 13.2 Review

System76

Brought to you by: System76

Some Rough Spots

  • The disk layout report is super dense, and a lot to parse. I opted to manually layout the partition table so I would have a better handle on what was being done. I was unable to get the auto suggest tool to suggest a layout that included removing my current install of Ubuntu. I liked some of its suggestions.

  • Refreshing the repos causes an error while it tries to read from the USB Thumb drive I used to install the OS. This happens everytime I do a “One Click” install. It happens twice during a “One Click” install.

  • Wifi selection / config did not hold over from install

  • When selecting a wifi network, I first have to enter my admin password, then the wifi network password, then it connects. So only users with admin rights can join wifi?

  • Administrator password needed to suspend the system

  • There is a lot of choice when it comes to installing software on openSUSE. From the very handy zypper command, to several, perhaps too many GUI applications to handle the task with various levels of functionality.

  • The same is true for just installing updates.

  • It’s interesting how Gnome normalizes the branding across distributions. It seem distributions are still attempting to figure out how to “brand” gnome and not look tacky. Perhaps the design culture around gnome creates a high amount of pressure not to screw it up, so the distributions avoid changing it much. But the experience is rather generic between all of the distributions so far.

software.opensuse.org

  • software.opensuse.org gives the openSUSE user confdince that many of the packages and tools he or she will need will be just a simple click away, with the added benfit of future updates. An investment that is truly paying off for the users of openSUSE. It’s not as complete as one might hope, but its one of the best out there. It’s a super advantage for opensuse, and it just seems to get better and better over time, regardless of what version of openSUSE you use.

Tomorrow’s Linux features, today.

  • zypper after many years has really come into its own. Powerful, fast, and intuitive to use. I prefer it over all other GUI tools and other distro command line tools.

  • SUSE Linux – Zypper Command Examples

  • Finally I get rewarded for using btrfs, with built in snapshots tied into the zypper package manager. Roll back changes with ease. Not the first distro to do this, but definitely the most user friendly.

  • Quickly install and take advantage of KVM or XEN with their quick install wizard.

  • The virtual machine management tools are readily available, and the same great tools you’ve come to love from other distros. But the speed at which all of it is setup and gets you up and running is impressive, and suggestions openSUSE could be a fantastic base OS for any developer, testers, system admins or etc that need quick and ready access to great virtualization tools.

My humble unofficial resources

Debian’s Civil War: Has It Really Come to This?

Well it seems no matter how loudly we here in the Linux blogosphere try to hum a happy tune or discuss
cheerful FOSS matters, we just can’t seem to drown out the shouts and screams coming from those standing too close to the Systemd Inferno.

Stand back, people! It’s dangerous!

The embers, of course,
had been hot for some time already before the blaze
flared sky-high a few months ago. Now, the conflagration appears to be completely out of control.

Need proof? Two words:
Debian fork.

That’s right: Debian, the granddaddy of Linux distributions and embodiment of everything so many FOSS fans hold dear, may be forked, and it’s apparently all because of Systemd.

Cinnamon 2.4

On behalf of the team and all the developers who contributed to this build, I am proud to announce the release of Cinnamon 2.4!

This new version will be featured in Linux Mint 17.1 “Rebecca” planned for the end of November and in LMDE 2 “Betsy” planned for Spring 2015.

Kubuntu 15.04 Will Be Based On KDE5

Kubuntu Vivid is the development name for what will be released in April next year as Kubuntu 15.04. The exciting news is that following some discussion and some wavering, the Kubuntu team will be switching to Plasma 5 by default. They claim that it has shown itself as a solid and reliable platform and it’s time to show it off to the world. There are some bits which are missing from Plasma 5 which are planned to be filled in over the next six months. As another technical detail, Debian git is now used to store the packaging in a Kubuntu branch, so hopefully it will be easier to share updates.

Keynote: Ruth Suehle – Default to Open

With visions of Raspberry Pis and Arduinos, Thingiverse and Instructables, it looks on the surface to many that the maker community is also an open source community. But is it? What does “open source” mean beyond code, and how does it apply to the maker community? Is the maker community open by default (or should it be)? Take a trip back through the long history of making and short history of makers to see where open source fits in and where we should be headed.

  • Q: It seems likely that the web would be a lot safer if we all used CoreOS. Do you personally believe that’s true? And why?

  • Q: You recently wrote about btrfs features that could benefit servers, and specifically Docker containers. Could you talk a bit about that?

TrueCrypt Must Not Die – organizing a future

This is not a fork (yet), we just coordinate, a fork will probably have a new name. Combining efforts is most important for now.

  • First priority: Making the product available again.
  • Second priority: finding interested and capable persons volunteering to help. Identify and solve legal issues. Identify Security Threats.
  • Additionally: we will wait for the result of the Open Crypto Audit
  • Third priority: Fork the project and solve security threats. Found a support association for continued development.

4000+ Downloads in the first 24 hours: There is still demand for a product like TrueCrypt!

The TrueCrypt project has shut down, and we\’ll run down what we think is the most likely answer to this sudden mystery is.

Linux Mint 17 Released!

\"Linux

Linux Mint 17 is a long term support release which will be supported until 2019. It comes with updated software and brings refinements and many new features to make your desktop even more comfortable to use.

\"Mint

The Update Manager was hugely improved.

It shows more information, it looks better, it feels faster, and it gets less in your way. It no longer needs to reload itself in root mode when you click on it. It no longer checks for an Internet connection or waits for the network manager and it no longer locks the APT cache at session startup.

The UI was improved, the icons were modified a bit and the changelog retrieval is now much faster and more reliable.

A new \”type\” column was added to differentiate between traditional updates, security updates, backports and romeo updates.

Security updates can now bypass safety levels and two new options were added for you to decide if they should always be visible and if they should be selected. By default these options are respectively set to True and to False.

Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr

\"System76\"

Brought to you by: System76

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS will be supported for 5 years for Ubuntu Desktop, Ubuntu Server, Ubuntu Core, Kubuntu, Edubuntu, and Ubuntu Kylin. All other flavours will be supported for 3 years.

New Features in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Desktop:

  • Linux kernel updated to version 3.13
  • Ability to change application menu position
  • Ability To click-to-minimise Application from the Launcher
  • Borderless windows
  • A wider range of launcher icons – from 16 to 64 pixels
  • Appearance improvements for very high-resolution displays
  • New language status icon in the top menu bar
  • Harmonised appearance for the lock screen
  • System Settings (GNOME Control Centre) replaced by Unity Control Center
  • Multi-task filtering by text input
  • Opening a guest session triggers a ‘changes are temporary’ warning
  • Since Ubuntu One is to close in June, 2014, this 14.04 will not support Ubuntu One File Services
  • First time for Ubuntu community flavours (Edbuntu, Kubuntu etc) to also be approved for LTS status
  • New Upstart — its last outing before Ubuntu switches to systemd

First Tweaks:

Here\’s a list of 10 useful things to do to get a near perfect desktop.

Ubuntu Software Center Disappoints…. Still.

  • Steam is not well exposed or featured.
  • Installing Steam requires I “buy” Steam.
  • “Buying” Steam requires I have an Ubuntu One account.
  • I thought Ubuntu One was shut down?
  • Confusing messaging throughout the process. A bad onboarding for new XP switchers.

Chris’ Final Take

  • Ubuntu still impresses, I’d expected my time in ARCH to have made me jaded.
  • You can feel the reach of the platform when looking up guides/software/info. This can’t be understated for new users or folks short on time.

  • The theme feels claustrophobically dated now. I quickly added the Numix PPA and installed the full suite.

  • Ubuntu 14.04 feels fairly modern, with signs of age.

  • The top bar looks very old, as does the system menu.
  • In contrast to the Unity dashboard these stand out even more.

  • New KDE Plasma Desktop 5, the design teams new work, Gnome 3.x getting better and better are legitimate competition to the Unity desktop which does feel like it’s standing a bit a slow.. Or is at least casually walking the marathon.

  • On the “cloud” side this is is potentially a great, maybe the greatest LTS.

  • Built in Docker.
  • Built in btrfs
  • Kernel 3.13 (legitimately recent for a Enterprise distro)

  • Ubuntu 14.04 is standing on the edge, and we don’t know what comes next.

  • The developers are just discussing the start of coverages between the desktop and mobile apps. Questions are being asked as to which classic applications we’ve come to live will be replaced with in-house Qt solutions.
Do any of you plan to switch from other distributions to Ubuntu LTS 14.04

donniezazen writes :

I am thinking about switching from Fedora 20 KDE to Kubuntu and stick with it for a long time.

Doing more with your Unity8 preview session in Ubuntu 14.04

The Unity 8/Desktop preview primarily is not a resurrection of Windows 8 – what you are looking at is the Ubuntu for Mobile UI running on your Desktop/Laptop. Changes to the user experience to move this UI to a Desktop/Laptop environment are coming in the next cycles.

It also is not at a quality level you’d expect from a LTS (hence it’s living in Universe), although it works fairly well on my 2 test machines. Due to limitations discussed in a previous post you might not be able to bring up Unity 8 on NVidia or ATI GPUs. We have not spent a lot of time on Hardware compatibility testing for this release and will focus on that as we march towards Ubuntu 14.10.

TrueCrypt audit finds “no evidence of backdoors” or malicious code

On Monday, after seven months of discussion and planning, the first phase of a two-part audit of TrueCrypt was released.

The results? iSEC, the company contracted to review the bootloader and Windows kernel driver for any backdoor or related security issue, concluded (PDF) that TrueCrypt has: “no evidence of backdoors or otherwise intentionally malicious code in the assessed areas.”

While the team did find some minor vulnerabilities in the code itself, iSEC labeled them as appearing to be “unintentional, introduced as the result of bugs rather than malice.”

Matthew Green, a Johns Hopkins cryptography professor who has been one of the people leading this effort, told Ars. “I think the code quality is not as high as it should be, but on the other hand, nothing terrible is in there, so that\’s reassuring.”

Overall, the source code for both the bootloader and the Windows kernel driver did not meet expected standards for secure code. This includes issues such as lack of comments, use of insecure or deprecated functions, inconsistent variable types, and so forth.

The team also found a potential weakness in the Volume Header integrity checks.
“It did not seem extremely important, but I think it\’s good to know about,” Green noted. “But I think it\’s good that we didn\’t find anything super critical.”

Cinnamon 2.2 Released With System Settings Improvements, HiDPI support And Mor

With Cinnamon 2.2, the System Settings UI was refined, making it look more consistent and also, the settings are better categorized, this allowing the Cinnamon developers to remove the switch between normal and advanced settings modules.

Another interesting improvement added with Cinnamon 2.2 is the way applets work: each applet is now able to register \”roles\” which tell Cinnamon which functionality they provide and this is used to allow Cinnamon to automatically hide systay icons for which the functionality is already present in an applet.

Here\’s an example from the Cinnamon 2.2 release announcement: \”Say you remove the network applet, well… you’ll see the Network Manager GTK systray icon appear. Say you put the network applet back in the panel, the Network Manager systray icon will then disappear.\”

Better systemd/logind support;

  • New Gnome style CSD seems a bit odd:

  • Same problem with XFCE, more of a CSD issue:

Red Hat Summit’s 10th Year: Docker Shines

April 14th-17th 2014

A lot of the buzz is around containerization in general and Docker in particular. Docker is set to ship with the latest version of RHEL (RHEL 7.0). Also, Docker will integrate with Red Hat\’s Open Shift PaaS. This is in addition to the earlier announcement that Red Hat is launching certification of applications delivered in the Docker container format.

Besides Red Hat, Docker already ran on the Amazon AWS version of Linux, as well as several other Linux distros. Also, sources tell me that we can expect to see more announcements in the weeks ahead about Docker being included by default in several other of the major Linux distros.

Docker is becoming synonymous with containers in Linux. By the time any other project or competitor look up they will have this one sewn up.

Mint 16 Review:

System76

Brought to you by: System76

Check out System76 on G+

Linux Mint 16 is the result of 6 months of incremental development on top of stable and reliable technologies. This new release comes with updated software and brings refinements and new features to make your desktop even more comfortable to use.

Cinnamon 2.0 is a serious desktop contender, but not for the reasons you might think. Has this desktop environment come into its own?

  • No Btrfs during install. Mint don’t play.
  • Mint’s refinement comes from controlled areas of change. Once they get something the way they like it, it’s an iterative process of improvement. Not giant leaps of innovation.
  • Mint Cinnamon feels like a modern desktop, that still faces the possibility of over mixing modern and classic UI metaphors.
  • But for now, seems to pull it off with success. After a couple week’s useage I start to miss KDE.

MATE

  • Mate accepts you for who you are.
  • Mate feels beyond Gnome 2, inspired, yet surpassed in features and power.

Cinnamon 2.0 Review

System76

Brought to you by: System76

Check out System76 on G+

This new version will be featured in Linux Mint 16 “Petra” planned for the end of November and will then be backported to LMDE and Linux Mint 13 LTS.

Cinnamon 2.0 represents 5 months of development and 856 commits from 28 developers. It features a lot of bug fixes but also brand new features and many improvements.

Edge-Snapping

Edge-Snapping was inspired by the Snap functionality of Xbox One. It is similar to Edge-Tiling (the window sticks to the edge or corner of the screen, occupies half of the screen and can be resized) but with one key difference: Maximized windows do not cover snapped windows.

The New User Applet

A new user applet is introduced in Cinnamon 2.0 to let you easily perform most session/account related tasks (leaving, switching users, disabling notifications, accessing settings…etc).

Better User Management

System administrators now have access to the “Users and Groups” configuration tool which allows them not only to administrate users but also groups.
