CISA Security Bill: An F for Security But an A+ for Spying | WIRED

When the Senate Intelligence Committee passed the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act by a vote of 14 to 1, committee chairman Senator Richard Burr argued that it successfully balanced security and privacy. Fifteen new amendments to the bill, he said, were designed to protect internet users’ personal information while enabling new ways for companies and federal agencies to coordinate responses to cyberattacks. But critics within the security and privacy communities still have two fundamental problems with the legislation: First, they say, the proposed cybersecurity act won’t actually boost security. And second, the “information sharing” it describes sounds more than ever like a backchannel for surveillance.

On Tuesday the bill’s authors released the full, updated text of the CISA legislation passed last week, and critics say the changes have done little to assuage their fears about wanton sharing of Americans’ private data. In fact, legal analysts say the changes actually widen the backdoor leading from private firms to intelligence agencies. “It’s a complete failure to strengthen the privacy protections of the bill,” says Robyn Greene, a policy lawyer for the Open Technology Institute, which joined a coalition of dozens of non-profits and cybersecurity experts criticizing the bill in an open letter earlier this month. “None of the [privacy-related] points we raised in our coalition letter to the committee was effectively addressed.”

“CISA goes far beyond [cybersecurity], and permits law enforcement to use information it receives for investigations and prosecutions of a wide range of crimes involving any level of physical force,” reads the letter from the coalition opposing CISA. “The lack of use limitations creates yet another loophole for law enforcement to conduct backdoor searches on Americans—including searches of digital communications that would otherwise require law enforcement to obtain a warrant based on probable cause. This undermines Fourth Amendment protections and constitutional principles.”

Israel Denies Spying on Iran Nuclear Talks – NYTimes.com

Three top Israeli ministers on Tuesday denied a report that their intelligence services had spied on the closed-door negotiations over Iran‘s nuclear program, as tensions continued to mount between Washington and Jerusalem.

“There is no such thing as Israel spying on the Americans,” the defense minister, Moshe Yaalon, said at a pre-Passover toast, according to a transcript provided by his office. Mr. Yaalon said he had checked and found no complaint from the United States to Israeli intelligence services about such spying. “There is a strict prohibition on that,” he said.

NSA shared Americans’ private communications with Israel: Snowden

Former U.S. intelligence analyst Edward Snowden has accused the U.S. National Security Agency of routinely passing private, unedited communications of Americans to Israel, an expert on the intelligence agency said Wednesday.

James Bamford, writing in the New York Times, said Snowden told him the intercepts included communications of Arab- and Palestinian-Americans whose relatives in Israel and the Palestinian territories could become targets based on the information.

“It’s one of the biggest abuses we’ve seen,” Bamford quoted Snowden as saying.

Snowden said the material was routinely transferred to Unit 8200, a secretive Israeli intelligence organization.

Bamford cited a memorandum of understanding between the NSA and its Israeli counterpart outlining transfers that have occurred since 2009.

Leaked by Snowden and first reported by the British newspaper the Guardian, it said the material included “unevaluated and unminimized transcripts, gists, facsimiles, telex, voice and Digital Network Intelligence metadata and content.”

US House Votes 348-48 To Arm Ukraine, Russia Warns Lethal Aid Will “Explode The Whole Situation” | Zero Hedge

Yesterday, in a vote that largely slid under the radar, the House of Representatives passed a resolution urging Obama to send lethal aid to Ukraine, providing offensive, not just “defensive” weapons to the Ukraine army – the same insolvent, hyperinflating Ukraine which, with a Caa3/CC credit rating, last week started preparations to issue sovereign debt with a US guarantee, in essence making it a part of the United States (something the US previously did as a favor to Egypt before the Muslim Brotherhood puppet regime was swept from power by the local army).

The resolution passed with broad bipartisan support by a count of 348 to 48.

According to DW, the measure urges Obama to provide Ukraine with “lethal defensive weapon systems” that would better enable Ukraine to defend its territory from “the unprovoked and continuing aggression of the Russian Federation.”

“Policy like this should not be partisan,” said House Democrat Eliot Engel, the lead sponsor of the resolution. “That is why we are rising today as Democrats and Republicans, really as Americans, to say enough is enough in Ukraine.”

Engel, a New York Democrat, has decided that he knows better than Europe what is the best option for Ukraine’s people – a Europe, and especially Germany, which has repeatedly said it rejects a push to give western arms to the Ukraine army, and warned that Russia under President Vladimir Putin has become “a clear threat to half century of American commitment to an investment in a Europe that is whole, free and at peace. A Europe where borders are not changed by force.”

This war has left thousands of dead, tens of thousands wounded, a million displaced, and has begun to threaten the post-Cold War stability of Europe,” Engel said.

Odd, perhaps the US state department should have thought of that in a little over a year ago when Victoria Nuland was plotting how to most effectively put her puppet government in charge of Kiev and how to overthrow the lawfully elected president in a US-sponsored coup.

Then again, one glance at the Rep. Engel’s career donors provides some explanation for his tenacity to start another armed conflict and to escalate what he himself defines as a cold war into a warm one.

Cruz’s Wife Heidi to Take Unpaid Leave From Goldman – Bloomberg Business

Sachs Group Inc. in Houston, has taken an unpaid leave from her
private wealth-management job to help with her husband’s
campaign for the U.S. presidency, a person familiar with the
matter said.

Ted Cruz, 44, a Republican senator from Texas, said on
Twitter early Monday morning that he plans to run for president
in the 2016 election. Heidi Cruz’s leave will last the duration
of the campaign, said the person, who asked not to be identified
speaking about Cruz’s employment.

Heidi Cruz, 42, a Harvard Business School graduate who
worked in President George W. Bush’s administration, joined
Goldman Sachs in 2005 and was promoted to managing director, the
firm’s second-highest rank, in 2012. She serves as regional head
of the Houston office in the private wealth-management unit,
which serves individuals and families who have on average more
than $40 million with the firm.

Obama Heads to Tech Security Talks Amid Tensions – NYTimes.com

PALO ALTO, Calif. — President Obama will meet here on Friday with the nation’s top technologists on a host of cybersecurity issues and the threats posed by increasingly sophisticated hackers. But nowhere on the agenda is the real issue for the chief executives and tech company officials who will gather on the Stanford campus: the deepening estrangement between Silicon Valley and the government.

The long history of quiet cooperation between Washington and America’s top technology companies — first to win the Cold War, then to combat terrorism — was founded on the assumption of mutual interest. Edward J. Snowden’s revelations shattered that. Now, the Obama administration’s efforts to prevent companies from greatly strengthening encryption in commercial products like Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android phones has set off a new battle, as the companies resist government efforts to make sure police and intelligence agencies can crack the systems.

Obama to sign executive order on sharing cybersecurity threat information – The Washington Post

President Obama will sign an executive order Friday that urges companies to share cybersecurity-threat information with one another and the federal government.

The order is advisory in nature and comes as the White House will kick off its first summit on Cybersecurity and Consumer Protection at Stanford University on Friday. The summit, which will focus on public-private partnerships and consumer protection, is part of a recent White House push to focus on cybersecurity.

It encourages the development of central clearinghouses for companies and the government to share data and creation of centers where data can be shared across specific geographic regions.

Samsung Exynos 7420 is 14nm and is also using Mali-T760 GPU. Obama stresses middle class in State of the Union

The nation is ready to “turn the page” from years of financial hardship, President Obama said Tuesday, as he used his State of the Union speech to promote an ambitious program of “middle class economics” in the face of new Republican majorities in Congress.

In his sixth State of the Union address — the second to last of his presidency — President Obama declared an economic resurgence, doubling down on improving wages for the middle class.

Obama says his administration is working to use intelligence to combat cyberthreats the way it has with terrorism. He says Congress should pass legislation protecting childrens’ information, fighting identity theft and addressing evolving cyberthreats. He says that would help protect technologies that have created opportunity worldwide.

Obama wants legislation enabling information sharing between the private sector and U.S. agencies and offering companies limited protection from liability.

“The trial began this week for Ross Ulbricht, the 30-year-old Texas man accused of being the mastermind behind the dark net drug market, Silk Road. But as the jury began hearing testimony in the case, it was clear the technological knowledge gap would impede the proceedings. Judge Katherine Forrest said right off the bat when the case began that “highly technical” issues must be made clear to the jury. “If I believe things are not understandable to the average juror, we will talk about what might be a reasonable way to proceed at that time,” she said. After the first day of proceedings, Forrest told the prosecution to be more clear with explanations of concepts central to the case, noting she was unhappy with its “mumbo-jumbo” explanation of the anonymizing service Tor. She also requested all readings of chat transcripts include emoticons.”

In next week’s State of the Union address, President Obama will propose new laws against hacking that could make either retweeting or clicking on the above link illegal. The new laws make it a felony to intentionally access unauthorized information even if it’s been posted to a public website. The new laws make it a felony to traffic in information like passwords, where “trafficking” includes posting a link.

Senate Panel Passes Cybersecurity Bill Despite NSA Fears

The Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act, advanced in a 12-3 vote, would make it easier for businesses and the government to share information with each other about cyberattacks. Business groups argue that legal barriers are preventing them from getting the information they need to stop hackers.

But the privacy groups are still worried that the legislation could encourage a company such as Google to turn over vast batches of emails or other private data to the government. The information would go first to the Homeland Security Department, but could then be shared with the NSA or other intelligence agencies.

“Instead of reining in NSA surveillance, the bill would facilitate a vast flow of private communications data to the NSA,” the American Civil Liberties Union, the Center for Democracy and Technology, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and dozens of other privacy groups wrote in a letter to senators last month.

Exclusive: Samsung’s virtual reality headset will be called Gear VR, launch at IFA 2014 | SamMobile

A month ago, Engadget exclusively reported on Samsung’s upcoming VR device, which is being developed in collaboration with Facebook’s Oculus VR. Today, we can confirm that Samsung is indeed working on a virtual reality device, and it’s called the “Gear VR”. Samsung will be announcing the device, alongside the Galaxy Note 4, at IFA 2014.

Instead of making a completely standalone virtual reality headset, Samsung has developed a modular design, which allows the user to dock in a Galaxy device into the Gear VR using USB 3.0. Virtual reality effect is achieved through head tracking, and instead of equipping the headset with sensors, Gear VR makes use of the smartphone’s accelerometer, gyroscope and processing power to track head motion.

You might say that this is exactly like Google’s Cardboard VR headset, which was handed out to I/O 14 attendees, and you would be right! The main concept behind Gear VR is the same. However, the Gear VR is much more comfortable to wear, thanks to the elastic head band and soft padded cushions on each side of the device, and Samsung’s implementation is also much better than that of Google’s Cardboard.

The hardware of the device is being developed by Samsung alone, but the software is being developed in cooperation with Oculus VR

Last week, Zack Brown posted a Kickstarter page titled simply “Potato Salad.”

“I’m making potato salad,” Brown wrote. Then, in case anybody was confused or skeptical or more inclined to support the preparation of a German-style potato salad than a mayo-heavy American version, he clarified: “Basically I’m just making potato salad. I haven’t decided what kind yet.”

His goal: $10.

Netflix Could Be Classified As a ‘Cybersecurity Threat’ Under New CISPA Rules | Motherboard

The cybersecurity bill making its way through the Senate right now is so broad that it could allow ISPs to classify Netflix as a “cyber threat,” which would allow them to throttle the streaming service’s delivery to customers.

“A ‘threat,’ according to the bill, is anything that makes information unavailable or less available. So, high-bandwidth uses of some types of information make other types of information that go along the same pipe less available,” Greg Nojeim, a lawyer with the Center for Democracy and Technology, told me. “A company could, as a cybersecurity countermeasure, slow down Netflix in order to make other data going across its pipes more available to users.”

The general uproar surrounding the bill could have led to the postponement of its markup—it was originally set to be discussed by Feinstein’s Intelligence Committee last week, but was pushed back. No word on when it’ll be taken up by the committee, but considering that the bill has been in the works behind closed doors for several months now, don’t expect it to die without first getting some very serious consideration on Capitol Hill.

Millions of dynamic DNS users suffer after Microsoft seizes No-IP domains

Millions of legitimate servers that rely on dynamic domain name services from No-IP.com suffered outages on Monday after Microsoft seized 22 domain names it said were being abused in malware-related crimes against Windows users.

Microsoft enforced a federal court order making the company the domain IP resolver for the No-IP domains. Microsoft said the objective of the seizure was to identify and reroute traffic associated with two malware families that abused No-IP services. Almost immediately, end-users, some of which were actively involved in Internet security, castigated the move as heavy handed, since there was no evidence No-IP officially sanctioned or actively facilitated the malware campaign, which went by the names Bladabindi (aka NJrat) and Jenxcus (aka NJw0rm).

In a complaint Microsoft filed under seal on June 19, Microsoft attorneys said No-IP is “functioning as a major hub for 245 different types of malware circulating on the Internet.” The document said abuse of the service has been the subject of recent blog posts by both OpenDNS and Cisco Systems.

Monday’s seizure was the tenth major malware disruption Microsoft has participated in. The actions typically combine surprise technical and legal procedures that eradicate or significantly disrupt major botnets.

South Korea gives up on Microsoft – Giving Open Sauce a chance

According to a government statement, South Korea wants to break from its Microsoft dependency and move to open source software by 2020″

In a statement the government said that it will invigorate open source software in order to solve the problem of dependency on certain software. The government has invested in Windows 7 to replace XP, but it does not want to go through the same process in 2020 when the support of the Windows 7 service is terminated.

The study came to light recently when he and his two co-researchers from Cornell University and University of California-SF published their study describing how users’ moods changed when Facebook curated the content of their News Feeds to highlight the good, happy stuff (for the lucky group) vs. the negative, depressing stuff

Four months after this study happened, in May 2012, Facebook made changes to its data use policy, and that’s when it introduced this line about how it might use your information: “For internal operations, including troubleshooting, data analysis, testing, research and service improvement.”

Twitter account hack leads to drop in the stock market

The Dow Jones and S&P 500 dropped after the twitter account of the Associated Press was compromised and posted a fake story about multiple explosions at the white house, stating that president Obama had been injured
It is reported that the drop in the S&P 500 caused by the fake news wiped out more than $136 billion in market value
This setback comes less than a month after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission ruled that companies can use social-media sites to share market-sensitive news
In a similar story, CBS temporarily lost control of two of if its twitter accounts, including @60Minutes
Twitter has promised to implement two-factor authentication, mainly relying on sending a text message to the user with a single use token
This raises the question of how two-factor authentication will interact with systems like hootsuite

Hacking 13 of the most popular home routers

Research firm ISE (Independent Security Evaluators) has published their case study on the vulnerabilities in common SOHO (Small Office / Home Office) routers
The report resulted in 17 confirmed CVEs and 21 candidates
Some of the information has not been disclosed yet, pending fixes from the vendors
They tested 13 different routers and found that each could be taken from from the local network
11 of the 13 could also be taken over remotely, 2 of them without an active management session
Half of the devices they tested that had NAS capabilities turned out to be accessible by a remote attacker
Although it is not enabled by default, if remote management is enabled, a number of these routers can be compromised remotely via authentication bypasses or CSRF (Cross-Site Request Forgery, a form that submits to your router rather than the site the form is on)
Once compromised, the attacker has remote control over your router, allowing them to change the settings, or even overwrite the firmware
If an attacker changes the DNS server settings on a router, that means all devices that receive DNS configuration (via DHCP) from that router, now use the evil DNS servers
These evil DNS servers can be the key to a MITM (Man In The Middle) attack, when you try to visit facebook, they return the IP address of an evil server, that pretends to be facebook, and steals your credentials
Facebook uses HTTPS (SSL/TLS) for login, however the evil server can strip that part from the page you actually receive and do the SSL only on its side as it proxies your requests to the real facebook
A new browser system called HSTS (HTTP Strict Transport Security) which allows websites to send a header saying they will ALWAYS have SSL was designed to solve this problem, however if users do not know any better and ignore the warnings, they can still be vulnerable. Also, the header includes a TTL (Time to live), after that time SSL is no longer required (the TTL is refreshed each time the header is seen, so it only expires if it is not seen for that period of time). The problem with HSTS is that if you have never gotten the header, because you have not been to the site before you were MITM’d, then you are not protected
If an attack has full control over your router, then they can also overwrite the firmware with their own, which might not allow any further firmware updates, meaning the router would have to be physically replaced. They could also purposely write invalid firmware to your router, bricking it
With custom firmware on your router, they could do additional traffic interception and manipulation, blocking your access to software updates (OS Updates, Java, Flash, etc), or injected malware into legitimate websites or downloads
The biggest concern is that most users never update the firmware on their router, so even if these vulnerabilities are patched, most of these devices will be vulnerable until they are replaced
The researchers have some advice for router vendors to make these types of problems easier to fix
- Digitally sign firmware, so the routers will not accept malicious firmware (The downsize of this is that is may prevent projects like DD-WRT)
- Design an automated update system for routers, since most users are not savvy enough to update the firmware themselves, and even if they are, there is no mechanism to notify them that an update is available/required. This should have an opt-out option, so power users can disable automatic updates
- Make sure all requests actually validate the HTTP Authentication data
- Implement Tokens in HTML forms to prevent CSRF
As an administrator of a SOHO router, the researchers recommend the following:
- Never enable the remote administration options
- Upgrade the firmware regularly
- Do not enable unused network services, even on the LAN side (Telnet, FTP, SMB, UPnP)
- Log out from and restart the router after each administrative session, this will ensure the session cannot be hijacked via your browser later
- Clear browser cookies and active logins after you log out of the router (only login to router in private browsing mode)
- Use a non-standard LAN IP range (still an RFC 1918, just something like 192.168.13.0/24) to prevent attacks based on common ranges from malicious sites and software
- Enable HTTPS on your router’s administrative interface if it supports it
- Use WPA2 for your WLAN, if an attack gains access to your wireless, it is much easier to attack your router
- Only install firmware from the router manufacturers websites (there are many ‘driver’ and ‘firmware’ download sites on the internet that are malicious
- Choose a strong administrative password that is at least 12 characters, most routers do not rate limit attacks over the LAN

Antivirus vendor Malwarebytes issues a definition update that mistakenly identified legitimate windows system files as Trojan.Downloader.ED
The offending update was v2013.04.15.12, and was only available on their site for 8 minutes before it was pulled when the error was discovered
This is not the first time an AV vendor has made such a mistake, in fact most all vendors have had such an incident
In the constant battle to ensure users are protected against the latest threat, the chances of false positives and faulty updates causing issues is only increasing

Inside Winnti, the Asian game hackers

Kaspersky Labs has published the results of their 18 month investigation of ongoing attacks against online game publishers and their users
The investigation started when a huge number of computers were found to contain malware, and the common thread between them all was that they were players on a specific online game from a publisher in Japan
It was later determined that the malware was installed on their computers as part of a legitimate update of the game software, from the official update servers
The publishers of the game were originally suspected of spying on their users, but it was quickly determined that it had been an attack on their servers, and that they were just being used as a trusted conduit to their userbase
When Kaspersky was asked to investigate the trojan that was found on the update server, they discovered that is contained a properly signed windows 64bit driver
The digital signature that was used belonged to another game publisher, KOG, from South Korea
Kaspersky notified the KOG and Verisign (who had issued the code signing certificate to KOG) and the certificate was revoked
As the investigation progressed, Kaspersky found that the Winnti group had infact managed to compromise more than a dozen different certificates
The Winnti group also appears to have sold access to these certificates to other attackers, as the certificates were used in attacks against Tibetan and Uyghur activists
The attackers also had three different ways to monetize their attacks:
- The unfair accumulation of in-game currency/“gold” in online games and the conversion of virtual funds into real money.
- Theft of source code from the online games server to search for vulnerabilities in games – often linked to the above
- Theft of source code from the server part of popular online games to further deploy pirate servers

Boston Bombing

A camera shot first moments after deadly explosions in Boston, Massachusetts. At least three people, including an eight-year-old, have been killed and more than a hundred injured after two explosions hit the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

There is conflicting information as to whether someone has been arrested in connection with the Boston Marathon bombings.

A federal law enforcement source told CNN\’s Fran Townsend that someone was arrested. But two senior administration officials and another federal official then told Townsend that there had been a misunderstanding among officials and that no one has been arrested.

Two Justice Department officials also told CNN\’s Joe Johns that there has been no arrest, and that authorities were looking into where the earlier confusion came from.

Feds arrest suspect in ricin-positive letters sent to Obama, senator – U.S. News

Federal agents on Wednesday arrested a suspect in the mailing of letters to President Barack Obama and a U.S. senator that initially tested positive for the poison ricin.

The suspect was identified as Paul Kevin Curtis of Tupelo, Miss., federal officials told NBC News. They said he may appear in court as early as Wednesday night.

The US military detention centre at Guantanamo Bay is the symbol of everything the country has done wrong since the September 11 attacks, according to a bipartisan group of former officials and academics.

The group, which reviewed US detention and rendition practices, has concluded that US interrogators committed torture while questioning detainees, and there\’s no proof the torture gave authorities any information to prevent future attacks.

Seasoned interrogators have confirmed the report finding that harsh interrogation techniques were ineffective and there was no rationale for their use, whether practical or moral.

But, of course, as we\’ve seen, it seems that Rogers himself is the one being misleading when it comes to privacy. If he truly believed in privacy protections, he would have supported a variety of straightforward amendments that made it clear how privacy could be protected. But he didn\’t. Instead, he clearly left it open for abuse.

Pakistan, Iran Leaders Inaugurate Pipeline Project

The Iran-Pakistan pipeline is designed to help Pakistan overcome its mushrooming energy needs at a time when the country is facing increased blackouts and energy shortages.

But there are serious doubts about how Pakistan could finance the $1.5 billion needed to construct the pipeline and whether it could go through with the project without facing U.S. sanctions, which Washington has put in place to pressure Iran over its nuclear program.

Officals told WSJ that the agency provides support to Iraq’s Counterterrorism Service (CTS) — comprised of SWAT-like units and U.S.-trained Iraqi special forces — which reports directly to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

In June The New York Times reported that CIA officers in southern Turkey was been funneling weapons to Syrian rebels. While Washington competes to be designated a test site for unmanned aircraft by the FAA a new report details just how much money the drone industry could bring to our state. New estimates show Washington could see an economic impact of more than $1.3 billion in just three years.

“Washington is one of those states that would be benefited the most. You have Boeing, which is already involved in this. But you also have all the spin-offs from having a high number of well-trained engineers with product knowledge on this,” says study author and aviation economist Daryl Jenkins.

Nationally, the immediate impact could be upwards of $13 billion, according to Jenkins.

Japan’s 52 nuclear reactors were taken off line following the world’s second most grievous nuclear accident (after Chernobyl). All but two remain in cold shutdown. As Japan scrambled to replace all that lost energy production it gobbled up oil to fire up generators

Soon after the disaster Japan’s government revised plans on developing the national nuclear energy industry. The same year Germany approved a program on abandoning nuclear power. At present only 9 NPPs are operating there. Though Germany plans to shut them down by 2022, experts note that Berlin just like Tokyo will have to adjust its plans.

In late 2012, the new Japanese government announced plans to deviate from the policy of the previous cabinet and re-launch 6 nuclear reactors on the territory of the country. The term was not mentioned

Rugged OS contains backdoor maintenance account with insufficent security

Rugged OS makes devices for controlling SCADA systems, including enabling management of non-networked SCADA devices via an IP-to-Serial interface
Rugged OS devices are used to manage traffic control systems, railroad communications systems, power plants, electrical substations, and even US military sites
The issue is that all Rugged OS devices contain an account with the username ‘factory’, that cannot be disabled
This account is obviously meant to allow the manufacturer to service the device, however it is insufficiently secured
Instead of using strong cryptography or SSL/SSH keys or something like that, the Factory Account uses a password derived from the MAC address of the device (so, the password is unique per device)
However, this password is simple the MAC address run through a short perl script that reverses the octets and takes the modulus of a static constant
This means that all of the factory user passwords are at most 9 digits in length and always contain only numeric values
The RuggedCom devices appear to use plain Telnet, rather than SSH, so all communications to and from the device are in the clear, meaning the password to the device could be sniffed by another with access to the network segment
The MAC address of the device is presented automatically as part of the login banner, making the compromise of these devices extremely trivial
Researchers notified the manufacturer more than a year ago, but rarely got a response
The researchers forced the issue via US-CERT in February of this year, and in the beginning of April CERT set a disclosure date due to a lack of response
This vulnerability was discovered by analyzing the firmware of a used Rugged OS device bought on eBay by the researchers
RuggedCom was acquired by the Canadian subsidiary of Siemens last month

Cryptic Studios Customer Database Stolen, in Dec 2010

The database that was compromised contained user login names, game handles, and ‘encrypted’ passwords
The official notice is sparse on details and does not explain what type of ‘encryption’ was used for the passwords
“Even though the passwords were encrypted, it is apparent that the intruder has been able to crack some portion of the passwords in this database”
Given the fact that it has been more than a year since the database was compromised before a string of accounts started being compromised suggests that the passwords may have been properly hashed
The delay suggests that the attackers had to brute force the password database, and that this took significant time, however the time factor is relative, if the attacker only used a single machine to crack the passwords, or was unaware of Rainbow Tables, plain MD5 sums could easily take this long
Cryptographically hashed MD5 (meaning, with a salt) or better yet SHA256 would take significantly longer to crack and would be immune to rainbow tables
Salted passwords mean that even if two users have the same password, you have to brute force each hash separately (if you use plain MD5 sums, then all users with the same password can be cracked in one attempt)
It is also very likely that the attacker saved up the passwords they were able to crack in order to compromise all of the accounts at once, to avoid Cryptic taking the step they have taken now, and forcing a password reset on all affected accounts
The risk in waiting is that users will change their passwords over time, and the cracked passwords will then be rendered useless
Even cryptographic hashes can be cracked eventually, that is why it is important to change your passwords periodically

Arcadyan Wifi Routers have accidental backdoor in WPS

The flaw, which was likely originally in place as a debugging tool, allows any user to authenticate to your network using the WPS pin 12345670
This attack is worse than the previous WPS attach that reduced the keyspace, because it does not require someone to press the WPS button on the device
Worse, this override pin still works even if the WPS feature is disabled in the settings on the router
Arcadyan makes routers specifically for ISPs, and there are more than 100,000 of these $275 routers deployed in Germany alone, all of which are vulnerable
Both the stock shipped 1.08 and the latest downloadable version 1.16 of the firmware are vulnerable
The only available workaround is to disable wireless entirely
Since the routers are often white labeled to the name of your ISP, Arcadyan devices will have MAC addresses that start with one of the following:
00–12-BF
00–1A–2A
00–1D–19
00–23–08
00–26–4D
1C-C6–3C
74–31–70
7C–4F-B5

US Unhappy With Australians Storing Data On Australian Shores

The US trade representatives specifically took issue with statements by the Australian Department of Defence, which has been making negative comments about various cloud providers based outside of Australia, implying that “hosting data overseas, including in the United States, by definition entails greater risk and unduly exposes consumers to their data being scrutinized by foreign governments.”
The issues first arose when the AU government started considering storing data in the cloud
The privacy commissioner raised many concerns about the security of the data in foriegn hands, and also the governments inability to legislate against foreign service providers

Cybercrime massively over reported, statistics totally unrealistic
Some reports claim that losses due to cybercrime could be as much as $1 Trillion US Dollars
Most cybercrime estimates are based on surveys of consumers and companies, and are very unreliable
Normal statistical polling for opinion questions, such as seen with political polling works well, however the same method does not work for questions related to a value, because there are no negative values to cancel out the statistical outliers when then get extrapolated resulting in a large upward bias
In a 2006 survey of identity theft by the Federal Trade Commission, two respondents gave answers that, when extrapolated to the entire population, would have added $37 billion to the estimate, dwarfing that of all other respondents combined
Numbers are also exaggerated by the same pool of gullible and unprotected users being repeatedly targeted, which leads to diminishing returns, however the unreliable statistical models do not take this into consideration

NAT may be the best answer, especially if you need NAT anyway for the 3 servers to connect out to the internet in the first place
You can forward the traffic using something like ‘balance’ or ‘HAProxy’, however the disadvantage to this over NAT is that the internal machines will see the source IP as the LAN IP of the internet facing machine, whereas with NAT they will see the original source IP address
For web traffic HTTP (80) and HTTPS (443), you can use nginx, and apache mod_rpaf to pass the original source IP to the internal apache server(s)
FreeBSD’s IPFW firewall has the ‘forward’ command, however this does not rewrite the headers of the packet, so the server that receives the forwarded packet needs to know what to do with it

Mike sends in his own IBM war story:

After hearing so many war stories from the Other Other Alan, I decided to add one of my own IBM war stories.
I’ve been a contract employee from IBM since 1997. Early in 2000 I and 4 other guys were assigned to a new Network Operations Outsourcing Center. The basic idea was that we four would perform network operations for customers, small/medium businesses external to IBM. Our first customer was a textile company with facilities scattered across the continental US from Georgia to California. IBM sales sold the company a package of software, hardware and services which included IBM Tivoli and Netview monitoring that we were to use to do our monitoring and maintenance of their network.

So, as was always the case back then IBM had specialists who would go out in the field and perform installs and configuration for the customer (in this case us) and then we would be responsible for maintaining it. The initial install took nearly a week with a couple of days of training. Now imagine all the oohs and ahs as all this was running on three HUGE IBM Netfinity 5500 Quad PIII Beasts running Windows NT server and the technicians were explaining all the bells and whistles including event correlation and intelligent discovery. Two days after they left, the database crashed. Well we couldn’t be down with no method of monitoring the customer’s systems. So we took an old copy of “What’s up Gold” and installed it on the only spare hardware we had, a Thinkpad 765. So, as IBM repeatedly sent out technicians to fix one thing or another with the Tivoli environment, or the Oracle database from Hell, we chugged on for an entire year monitoring 40 odd NT servers and an equal amount of network hardware…from a little old pentium 166 laptop, while untold thousands of dollars worth of software and hardware sat almost unused until it was disassembled at the end of the contract.

Data Center staff for the London Olympics will sleep amongst the servers

Data Center technicians at London’s Interxion data center will sleep on site in specially designed pods
The concern is that the transit systems in London will be overwhelmed by the number of visitors and staff will not be able to make it to the data center in a reasonable amount of time. To avoid this issue, staff will sleep at the Data Center
The sleeping chambers were designed by UK company Podtime, and are designed for workplaces to provide staff an area for “power naps” but can be customized for overnight stays

Students in an Ethical Hacking class find flaw in Backtrack Linux

Backtrack Linux is a distro designed for security analysis, forensics and penetration testing
Backtrack is a very common tool among security professionals
The vulnerability has to do with improper input validation in WICD via DBUS, and could allow an attacker to cause scripts or executables to be run as root whenever specific events occur, such as when the user connects to a wifi network
The ethical hacking class then created a proof of concept exploit and a patch to resolve the issue
Backtrack Linux includes common tools such as metasploit, Aircrack-NG, RFMON and a Cisco scanner

Samba flaw has wide spread implications

A critical flaw in SAMBA, the open source windows file sharing server can allow an unauthenticated attacker to gain root access
All versions of Samba from 3.0 to 3.6 are vulnerable, save for 3.6.4 the newly released stable version
The Samba project has gone so far as to release patches for older out of support versions of Samba
A remote pre-authentication vulnerability is one of the the worst possible flaws for a public facing service
Samba is extremely popular in embedded appliances including routers, set top boxes, print servers, NASs and media centers
The fact that Samba is one of the most commonly embedded bits of open source software means that this vulnerability will likely exist in the wild for years to come, most users may not even know that they are running samba, let alone a vulnerable version
Many of the devices are no longer supported, or do not even offer the possibility of a firmware upgrade. Even many devices that do offer upgrades, require manual user intervention, and there is always a risk of bricking a device when applying a firmware update

Over 750,000 people compromised by Utah Medicaid breach

As many as 280,000 people had their Social Security Numbers stolen and approximately 500,000 more victims had less-sensitive personal information (Name, Address, Birth Date) leaked
The Utah health department warns people that they will receive an official letter, and will not be contacted by phone, and that to avoid scammers, they should not give out personal information via phone calls they did not initiate
“A configuration error occurred at the password authentication level, allowing the hacker to circumvent DTS’s security system. DTS has processes in place to ensure the state’s data is secure, but this particular server was not configured according to normal procedure. DTS has identified where the breakdown occurred and has implemented new processes to ensure this type of breach will not happen again.”
While details on the specific configuration error that resulted in the breach are missing, it is interesting to see the blame falling squarely on those responsible rather than blaming cyber criminals or vague references to advanced persistent threat attacks

HP Warns customers that switches may come with malware infected SD cards

HP Switches in the 54xx ZL series have been shipped with compact flash cards that contain malware
The malware does not harm the switch, but if the flash card is inserted in to a PC it can result in that PC being compromised by the malware
HP offers two fixes, a ‘software purge option’, that uses commands in the switches management interface to delete the malware from the flash card (no downtime required), or HP will ship you a new management module, once you power down your switch and swap it out, you return the malware infected one
This incident highlights concerns about the security of the technology supply chain, and the recent efforts by the Open Trusted Technology Provider Standard
