Last Week hit Close to Home for afixia-web

I’ve had so many so close to great workflows in windows and linux. But at the end of the day, a maxed out macbook pro can run 4 monitors, sign ios apps, compile android and mac apps, and run some of the most intuitive workflow processes i’ve ever seen (alfred worflows and homebrew alone????).

Love the struggle though, but too close to home.

Optionals

Swift 4 also introduces Optionals type, which handles the absence of a value. Optionals say either “there is a value, and it equals x” or “there isn’t a value at all”.

An Optional is a type on its own, actually one of Swift 4’s new super-powered enums. It has two possible values, None and Some(T), where T is an associated value of the correct data type available in Swift 4.

After the end of the startup era

The web boom of ~1997-2006 brought us Amazon, Facebook, Google, Salesforce, Airbnb, etc., because the Internet was the new new thing, and a handful of kids in garages and dorm rooms could build a web site, raise a few million dollars, and scale to serve the whole world. The smartphone boom of ~2007-2016 brought us Uber, Lyft, Snap, WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter, etc., because the same was true of smartphone apps.

Do you have the Learners Syndrome?

If I start building something and investing time in it, I feel like I’m missing out on learning the new cool technologies and have a fear of being left behind.

Google says it will update the new generation Pixels for three years at a minimum. That is for both OS and security updates.

iOS 11’s Misleading “Off-ish” Setting for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi is Bad for User Security

What actually happens in iOS 11 when you toggle your quick settings to “off” is that the phone will disconnect from Wi-Fi networks and some devices, but remain on for Apple services. Location Services is still enabled, Apple devices (like Apple Watch and Pencil) stay connected, and services such as Handoff and Instant Hotspot stay on.

In June, Apple announced software-based authentication for HomeKit. Prior to that, it required hardware-based authentication whereby every company making HomeKit products had to include an Apple-approved authentication chip.

TypeScript was designed with JavaScript in mind, and as a superset of JavaScript it accepts regular JavaScript syntax. It’s not an entirely new language, but a strictly-typed superset of JavaScript that compiles down to plain vanilla JavaScript. 24-core CPU and I can’t move my mouse | Random ASCII

This story begins, as they so often do, when I noticed that my machine was behaving poorly. My Windows 10 work machine has 24 cores (48 hyper-threads) and they were 50% idle. It has 64 GB of RAM and that was less than half used. It has a fast SSD that was mostly idle. And yet, as I moved the mouse around it kept hitching – sometimes locking up for seconds at a time.
