Razer is launching an open-source VR headset this year

This year, Razer’s announcing an open-source software and hardware initiative known as “OSVR.”

That acronym stands for — you guessed it — “Open-Source Virtual Reality.”

Razer is releasing every detail of its virtual reality headset and the software that makes it work as open-source, enabling developers, makers and other enterprising individuals to create their own versions. The company’s also making and selling its own “Hacker Dev Kit”, set to debut sometime between now and June.

Razer Unveils Its $100 Android-Powered Gaming Console, Razer Forge TV

The Razer Forge TV is a micro-console, 4×4 inches and selling for $100, and Razer hopes it will give the company three new routes into your living room: as a platform for hardcore PC gaming, for Android gaming, and for Android-based entertainment services via Google Play. The Razer Forge TV is due out in Q1.

It has quad-core processing (Qualcomm Snapdragon 805; Quad-Core Krait 450 CPU – 2.5 GHz per core); a high-end graphics engine (Adreno 420 GPU

Wireless and network connectivity; 16 GB of internal storage and 2 GB of RAM.

On the non-gaming front, the Forge TV will also work as an entertainment hub, letting users stream music, videos and other apps, and photos to their televisions.

External hard drives? Pfah! Samsung just launched external SSDs

Samsung’s 250GB external SSD is priced at $179.99, a 500GB drive is $299.99, and a 1TB drive is $599.99.

The Portable SSD T1 drives will connect to a PC’s USB 3.0 port. The SSDs have sequential read and write speeds of 450MB per second, random read speeds of 8,000 IOPS (input/output per second) and random write speeds of 21,000 IOPS.

Dell’s new XPS 13 has a stunning edge-to-edge display

2015’s XPS 13 will ship with an even better and truly beautiful 13.3-inch “infinity” display. It has an incredibly tiny 5.2mm bezel on the top and sides. While previous models of the XPS 13 have always had an impressively small bezel, the latest feels truly edge-to-edge, and it’s dazzling to look at. Dell hasn’t just stopped at thin bezels, though, and the 2015 model now has an optional 3200 x 1800 high-resolution touchscreen display. That’s a massive improvement over the 1366 x 768 resolution we disliked on the original.

Dell is claiming the new XPS 13 is the “smallest 13-inch laptop on the planet,” thanks primarily to the 13.3-inch borderless display that’s squeezed into an 11-inch size laptop

YouTube to block indie labels who don’t sign up to new music service

Independent artists could disappear from YouTube “in a matter of days” after the Google video service confirmed it was dropping content from independent labels that have not signed up for its upcoming subscription music service.

YouTube is about to begin testing the new service — which will charge people to watch and listen to music without ads, and download songs to their mobile devices — within the next few days, initially within Google.

YouTube executives argue that they cannot offer music on the free service without it also being available on the paid service as this would disappoint its subscribers. The solution? To take down songs that can’t be available on both services.

“We’re adding subscription-based features for music on YouTube to bring our music partners new revenue streams in addition to the hundreds of millions of dollars YouTube already generates for them each year,” said a YouTube spokesman in a statement

Amazon Smartphone Details Emerge, AT&T Exclusive

AT&T will be the exclusive carrier, according to people familiar with the Seattle company’s plans. The arrangement extends Amazon’s relationship with AT&T, which also provides wireless service for Kindle tablets and e-readers.

More than 1,600 people claim Lab126 as their employer on the professional networking site LinkedIn

The smartphone project has been one of the longest in development at Lab126. Interviews with multiple Lab126 employees over the course of many months—all conducted with promises of anonymity because Amazon fiercely guards such information—suggest that the phone project was started as far back as 2009.

After release and this stupid stuttering problems I started searching for fixes etc.
Then I saw many threads talking about the engine when I realized it was based on dunia 2 so I tried to unpack the files which obviously not worked.. so after searching so much for the unpacker I found it, started playing with it and after a long time of testing I ended up getting the E3 Bloom from 2012 working.

After studying how bin hex worked and downloading many tools to convert files etc, I was able to integrate and enable many effects. I told myself to keep trying and trying and that is what I have done.

The only reason I would need iTunes on linux is for streaming tv shows.
Netflix and amazon\’s library is peanuts compared to itunes. Itunes has a lot of exclusives. Meaning shows that aren\’t and will probably never be released to dvd or bluray. As a linux user, I really hate that there\’s little to no DRM support here.

Can\’t get it working. Nor mp4s bought from my ipad. I really wish that\’ll change. As far as digital media go, linux is 10 years behind.

— SteamOS Annouced: Linux for the Living Room —

Last year, we shipped a software feature called Big Picture, a user-interface tailored for televisions and gamepads.
This year we\’ve been working on even more ways to connect the dots for customers who want Steam in the living-room.
Soon, we\’ll be adding you to our design process, so that you can help us shape the future of Steam.

SteamOS will primarily be based off Ubuntu, as it has been Valve\’s focus ever since they started testing Steam for Linux. They already have a repository for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS users designated \”hometest\”, which is obviously short for SteamOS being tested in people\’s homes. This hometest repository has been around since April.

+ This will create a \"Steam standard\" that non-Steam distros can follow to garuntee compatability.

While 40 percent of all Linux games on Steam feature some form of controller support, that only amounts to 72 games total that are currently set up to work on a living room box running SteamOS

When Big Picture mode was launched last September, 23.7 percent of the games available on Steam were listed with full or partial controller support (382 games total). Of the games that have launched on Steam since then, about 48.4 percent have featured full or partial controller support (raising the total proportion of games in this category on Steam to 29.4 percent or 617 games total).

Not unlike the Nvidia Shield, it will include a method for wirelessly streaming games from your existing gaming computer to your TV, which Valve says will also come to the regular Steam client at some point in the future.

  • Steam – ~60 million users
  • XBox Live – 46 million users as of February 2013
  • PlayStation Network – +100 million

  • The dawn of a new \”Linux\”. Valve could change the meaning of Linux from \”scary to the average joe\” to the market saviour, open in the same sense of the \”internet\” being open and allowing for commerce.

Indie Devs Hope for PS4 Love

Indie publisher and developer Curve has issued an official press release to declare its \’focus on PS4 development\’ following \”the lack of independent support currently announced from Microsoft and the Xbox One.\”

We also reaffirmed our dedication to independent developers and their ability to self-publish on PlayStation. We\’ve increased our efforts in a huge way to bring unique gaming experiences to PlayStation platforms, and as we just revealed, we have an excellent lineup of games coming to the PlayStation 4 from the indie development community.

Oops! I’ve built my business around an abandoned platform!

High-speed ports mean that Apple is moving expansion outside the chassis for its high-end machines. It\’s a departure for the Mac Pro, but it\’s in line with decades of Apple thinking.

Yes, you can connect USB 3.0 drives, Thunderbolt hard drives, and PCIe to Thunderbolt expansion boxes to the new Mac Pro. Expansion boxes like the ones from Sonnet and OWC let you pull the video input or graphics output card to your Thunderbolt Mac. They can also let you connect multiple eSATA drives to a Thunderbolt Mac if your company has standardized on eSATA drives.

Sony has demonstrated a convincing commitment to indie at its E3 press conference, calling numerous independent developers to the stage as it insisted that small studios and self publishing are vital to the PlayStation 4.

  • A little more insight from DStahl

EVERYONE else (the majority of the team) is working on stuff that you will not see until the next big update – Season 6. That is where you will see things like Fleet Advancement system, Starbases, new types of Fleet Only “fleet actions”, updated PVP, new Foundry features, and if we are lucky, maybe even some leaderboards. Oh and maybe some Tholians.

Ship Interior Functionality via the Doff System

– New NPCs on your Ship Interiors (and a few public maps) that offer two types of assignments: Fixed and Rotating
– Fixed NPC Assignments will include things like crafting hyposprays, regenerators and ship components.
– Rotating NPC Assignments will include a mix of existing Shipboard and Sector assignments, as well as newly-crafted unique assignments ONLY available on these NPCs.
– Many steps of different Assignment Chains have been moved to these NPCs, to ensure that players participating in the Doff system check their interior somewhat regularly.
– Rotating NPC Assignments will be different on different interiors. If you don’t like what your NPCs are offering, visit a friend’s interior instead.

Tactical View:

  • Dilithium Mining
  • Useful for lower level players without access to better dilithium missions e.g. STFs
  • Excellent environment with details such as low gravity “walking”
  • Beautiful D’Kora model hovering above the asteroid (JamJamz designed it)
  • Lack of profession specific aspects
    • Engineering: Ensuring heat dissipation during mining
    • Science: Regulating power level to ensure optimum laser cutting power
    • Tactical: Targetting dilithium veins effectively

Dilithium Gathering Tips:

  • -Multiple methods – casual & hardcore / low level & capped
  • -Dailies / Special Events / Doff Assignments / Dismissing Doffs
  • -Return on time investment is the key factor – dilithium per minute?
  • -Daily Lore Mission – 480 dilithium for FED & KDF (academy mission)
  • -Daily Foundry – 3 missions for 1440 (console missions expedite this)
  • -Daily Cluster Exploration – 1440 for 3 missions (fastest with 3 scans)
  • -Dilithium Mining Event – unsure of cap but seems to be 1K for 10 mins of play
  • -STFs – elites give 1100 for completion for 20 to 30 mins of play with loot possibilities
  • -Fleet Actions – 1440 dilithium each
  • -KDF Sorties – 960 for Sortie Alpha, 960 for Sortie Bravo both repeatable every 30 mins
  • -KDF “Path Of The Warrior” – wrapper mission for Sorties giving 2400 daily

MATH

Borg Set Reference
Aegis Set Reference

Console:

There’s only one choice, and it’s worth it. The Borg Universal console can be obtained by running “Assimilated” in the Undine Front. This mission can be solo’d, but it requires some finesse to get the ground portion done.

The first ground map, known as “The Maze” consists of many different corridors lined with borg sitting passive in their alcoves. If any of these borg are attacked, they will retaliate. This is a VERY bad thing, as you’ll also be taking on patrols and a few stationary groups. Adding these passive borg to any combat situation is likely to get you killed.

So you have two choices: Avoid aggroing them, or kill EVERYTHING along the way. There are approximately 200 borg on this map though, so I recommend the first choice.

To avoid aggro’ing them, make sure you and all of your boffs are only using single-target weapons and abilities. Compression Pistols and Sniper Rifles. AOE abilities like grenades and geothermal vent don’t always aggro them, but it might be smart to avoid them anyway. Also do not bring turrets as they target enemies indiscriminately, but Support Drones are fine.

If you follow the corridors and click on the right teleporter you’ll be sent to a central room with a boss in the middle. I recommend clearing out the perimeter of the room before engaging him.

Deflector Dish:

There are 3 factors to consider:

  • Skill Bonuses (Sensors vs. Deflectors)
  • Power Bonuses (Shields vs. Aux)
  • Set Bonus activation

This last point is actually the most important of the three. The set bonuses of either set are more powerful than skill considerations or power levels. Read further for calculations on the effectiveness of these set bonuses.

The Borg dish can be obtained by running the STF “The Cure”

For hints on defeating “The Cure” check out the following links:

Engines:

Aegis a clear winner here, as it is faster and offers a substantial boost to the “Combat Maneuvers” skill which few captains max out on their own.

The only situation where the Borg engine exceeds the Aegis, is when traveling in Sector Space since it enables a higher top Warp Speed.

So… get BOTH engines, and use the Borg while traveling. Be sure to switch back to the Aegis engine when faced with space combat.

The Borg Engine can be obtained by running the STF “Infected”

For tips on defeating “Infected” check out the following links:

Shields:

This is the biggest difference between the two sets, and comes down to Regenerative (with very nice regen/healing bonuses) and Covariant (with decent defensive boosts).

Now, if you recall from our “Master Your Shields” math segment, you’ll know that I’m very much in favor of Covariants. However, the bonuses of BOTH of these shields warrant examining the choice in further detail.

The most important factor here is Set Bonuses, as the Borg shield is only reliable if both it’s 2- and 3-piece set bonuses are intact. The 2-piece bonus supplies a nice hull heal, and the 3-piece bonus further amplifies the regenerative capacity of this shield. Without both of these bonuses, this shield does not perform well in a sustained firefight.

However, both of these set bonuses have been seen to activate multiple times in even short battles, causing most players to consider them RELIABLE as a further form of survivability.

But, because this is still a Regenerative Shield, it requires that you run your shield energy very high to benefit fully from its regeneration rate, AND maintain enough maneuverability to be able to spread out incoming damage to all four shield quadrants.

The Borg shield can be obtained by running the STF “Khitomer Accord”

For tips on completing “Khitomer Accord” check out the following links:

Set Bonuses:

The Borg Hull and Shield Heals are substantially more powerful than the Aegis set’s defensive boosts.

Firstly, the Aegis 2-piece bonus offers a reliable boost to your ship’s Defense skill. This skill is percentage-based, and is more effective at higher speeds (Escorts/Birds of Prey tend to fly faster). A high defense skill will cause enemies to MISS your ship, dealing zero damage.

All of the other set bonuses require that you sustain damage in order for them to have a chance to activate, meaning that this bonus actually INHIBITS others from activating. However, this is offset by the slight reduction in damage from all those missed shots. The actual effectiveness of this boost varies by ship, engine, and tactics, but due to some recent re-balancing, will generally effect all captains approximately the same amount.

As for the Aegis 3-piece bonus, you’re looking at a real letdown. The resistance boost seems substantial at 10%, especially since it can stack up to 10 times. However, each stack past the first suffers from standard diminishing returns on resistances resulting in much smaller of a benefit than is portrayed on the tooltip. Furthermore, this resistance bonus actually applies to HULL damage, not shield damage. And since the boost requires your shields to be UP in order for it to activate, chances are that you will be receiving very little benefit from this reduction in incoming hull damage.

Meanwhile, the Borg 2-piece bonus offers a 52% hull heal (approx. 20,000 hull points on a T5 Cruiser) and will tend to fire off at least once per battle. With such a substantial heal, the amount of bleedthrough damage trickling through your shields is likely to be a non-issue. And if your shields are down for any reason, you can potentially benefit even MORE from this sudden heal as it also includes a decent hull resistance boost.

The Borg 3-piece set has also been rated as reliable by many players, tending to go off 2-3 times per group of enemies. Each time regenerating a bit less than half of your overall shield strength (if using the Borg shield), and making you more resistant to incoming shield damage.

Mixed Sets:

The only reason to use the full 4-piece Borg set, is for the Tractor Beam ability. From all accounts I’ve read, it’s a fun toy but not nearly powerful enough to turn the tide of any battle. Meanwhile, the mixed bonuses you can receive from going with only 2- or 3- pieces of one set can be substantial.

If you choose to use the Borg Shield, I recommend the following mixed set:
Borg Shield, Borg Deflector, Borg Console, Aegis Engine

This keeps the Shield and Hull regen boosts intact, and gives you the better engine from either set.

If you choose to use the Aegis Shield, I recommend the following mixed set:
Aegis Shield, Aegis Engine, Borg Deflector, Borg Console

This set up gets you the better engine and tougher shield, while keeping two separate 2-piece bonuses intact (Borg Hull Regen, Aegis Defense Boost)

As a matter of personal taste, the Deflector and Engine could be swapped, leaving:
Aegis Shield, Borg Engine, Aegis Deflector, Borg Console

Which would net you +5 Engine and Shield power and change up some Science skill boosts, at the cost of a some speed and a boost to Combat Maneuvers, without sacrificing the two separate 2-piece set bonuses.

And finally, it’s also possible to use the following mixed set:
Aegis Shield, Borg Engine, Borg Deflector, Borg Console

This strange mix gives you all of the regenerative/healing abilities of the borg set, and the very tough outer shell of the Aegis shield. The sole downside to this is the lack of that nice boost to Combat Maneuvers. There’s an argument to be made that keeping the 3-piece Borg set bonus intact is worth that loss…. and I would agree.

Tonight’s show is going to be a smorgasbord of internet failures of several types. We promised to talk to you about NASA’s “gigantic ground-breakingly awesome and totally not lame” announcement they had planned for today, and we’ll do so. Then we’ll tell you why it FAILED SO HARD.

And speaking of big announcements and failures, OnLive today announced their new “unlimited play” plan. Wah wah. But hey, yknow, we still think OnLive is rad, and we’re gonna tell you why. Then we’ll tell you about a major game-changer that’s landed in Star Trek Online, which we’ll spend our weekend playing with, AND we’ll tell you why this has the potential to change the landscape of online gaming in general.

Show Notes:

NASA’s BIG Announcement

  • They found microbes in a lake HERE ON EARTH that have arsenic in their protein structure in the place of phosphorous.
  • This is akin to the science-fiction theory that lifeforms could thrive replacing carbon with silicon due to their structural similarities on a molecular level.  Until now, only a theory with no evidence.
  • Kinda neat, but you have to be a MAJOR biology-nut to get wood over this. Totally over-hyped.
  • Plus, rumor from our audience says “they already discovered this a long time ago.”

On-Live’s BIG Announcement

  • An “unlimited” membership option called the PlayPack for $9.99/mo.
  • Goes well with the release of their microconsole that came out today.
  • Their game library is still sub-par.
  • AND this new option does NOT include new releases.
  • BUT, OnLive is still neat, and could seriously impact the future of online gaming, if they get a few things in line:  Additional titles, 1080p support.  Another major limitation that’s beyond their control for now, bandwidth requirements.

Star Trek Online’s BIG Announcement

  • The Foundry has launched into Open Beta!
  • It is a toolset that allows subscribers to the game to create their own missions for other players to experience.
  • It’s extremely robust. Actually more options than I assumed it would have, and therefore more confusing than I thought it would be.
  • FAIL:  It caused repeated server crashes, and has been brought offline for revision. No ETA on re-launching the feature.
  • WIN:  No other online game offers such a robust content creation toolset. This could revolutionize what players expect from future MMOGs.
