iOS 9.3 Preview – Apple

This latest iOS release adds numerous innovations to the world’s most advanced mobile operating system. There are improvements to a wide range of apps, along with great new additions to CarPlay. iOS 9.3 may even help you get a good night’s sleep. And you’ll find a preview of new features that will make using iPad in schools easier and better for students and admins.

App Age Over?

Switching to Linux

In 10 years a lot has changed, but the main thing Apple and OS X had going for
it was it’s “it just works” reputation. I feel this has stopped being true.

Why Software Outsourcing Doesn’t Work … Anymore – Yegor Bugayenko

I_’m talking about outsourcing, not offshore development. The difference is that in outsourcing, there are two companies involved: you the client and some WeCodeLikeNoOneElse Inc. from Loompaland. In offshore development, you just open an office in that same Loompaland with your own management and employees_

Can coding bootcamps replace a computer science degree?

A _2015 survey from Course Report of 67 U.S. and Canadian bootcamp schools_found that the average tuition per program is just over $11,000, with an average program length of about 11 weeks. Compare that with an average cost of $31,321 for one year at a private college, and a tech bootcamp seems like a great deal. Even a year for in-state students attending a public institution can expect to pay just over $9,000 per year, while out-of-state students pay an average of $22,958 per year at public colleges.

Lenovo’s SuperFish Removal Tool on GitHub – lenovo-inc/superfishremoval · GitHub

SuperFish was pre-installed on a limited group of Lenovo branded notebooks beginning September, 2014. Lenovo recommends removing SuperFish and the SuperFish certificates from all systems.

This utility will completely analyze your system for this problem and remove the SuperFish application, associated registry entries, files and security certificates, if needed.

Superfish has offices in Palo Alto, California and Petah Tiqva, Israel. By all appearances Superfish par for the course when it comes to Venture Capital funded Silicon Valley startups down to the Crunchbase entry.

Lenovo slapped with lawsuit over dangerous Superfish adware | PCWorld

A proposed class-action suit was filed late last week against Lenovo and Superfish, which charges both companies with “fraudulent” business practices and of making Lenovo PCs vulnerable to malware and malicious attacks by pre-loading the adware.

Plaintiff Jessica Bennett said her laptop was damaged as a result of Superfish, which was called “spyware” in court documents. She also accused Lenovo and Superfish of invading her privacy and making money by studying her Internet browsing habits.

The Tech Worker Shortage Doesn’t Really Exist

“There’s no evidence of any way, shape, or form that there’s a shortage in the conventional sense,” says Hal Salzman, a professor of planning and public policy at Rutgers University. “They may not be able to find them at the price they want. But I’m not sure that qualifies as a shortage, any more than my not being able to find a half-priced TV.”

Microsoft/TypeScript · GitHub

TypeScript is a superset of JavaScript that compiles to clean JavaScript output.

https://www.typescriptlang.org

TypeScript – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

TypeScript is a free and open source programming language developed by Microsoft. It is a strict superset of JavaScript, and adds optional static typing and class-based object-oriented programming to the language. Anders Hejlsberg, lead architect of C# and creator of Delphi and Turbo Pascal, has worked on development of TypeScript.[1][2][3][4]

TypeScript is designed for development of large applications and transcompiles to JavaScript.[5] As TypeScript is a superset of JavaScript, any existing JavaScript programs are also valid TypeScript programs.

TypeScript supports header files which can contain type information of existing JavaScript libraries, enabling other programs to use objects defined in the header files as if they were strongly typed TypeScript objects. There are third-party header files for popular libraries like jQuery, MongoDB, Node.js, and D3.js.[6]

Common criticisms of TypeScript

TypeScript was announced and folks are saying “TypeScript is clearly Microsoft’s answer to Google’s Dart” or “So TypeScript is Microsoft’s answer to CoffeeScript.”

People have compared TypeScript to Dart. That’s comparing apples to carburetors. TypeScript builds on JavaScript so there’s no JS interop issues. Dart is a native virtual machine written from scratch. Dart interops with JavaScript…but it’s not JS. It doesn’t even use the JavaScript number type for example.

TypeScript | Build 2014 | Channel 9

JavaScript has grown from a webpage toy to being used in large-scale deployments both on the server and in the browser. This rapid growth has outpaced the growth of the language itself, which lacks features that allow teams to communicate requirements and build applications safely. This session will be a guided tour of TypeScript, showing how the language and toolset makes it easier to write cross-platform, large-scale JavaScript applications.

Earlier this month the Yorba Foundation received a formal notice from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) denying Yorba 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. It’s possible this is nothing to be concerned with (at least, not unless you’re a part of Yorba). Reading their response, I believe this denial is actually a cause for concern for free software groups within the United States, and perhaps abroad.

The IRS reasons that since Yorba’s open source software may be used for any purpose, Yorba is not a charity. Consider all the for-profit and non-charitable ways the Apache server is used; I’d still argue Apache is a charitable organization.

  • Why your previous developer was terrible

Don’t worry — your situation is far from unique. I’ve seen it time and time again that a new developer comes in and seems to change everything almost overnight. She or he suggests new tools, new processes, new languages and new everything. All of this while badmouthing the previous developer or team. I’ve been on all sides of this fine play. I’ve been the “previous developer” who got badmouthed by the new guy. I’ve been the new guy that used the previous guy as my scapegoat. I’ve hired developers that have been in both positions. I’ve worked for companies that couldn’t see what was plain to me: this happens all the time.

  • Oculus VR employees got death threats after Facebook sale

\”We expected a negative reaction from people in the short term, we did not expect to be getting so many death threats and harassing phone calls that extended to our families,\” Luckey said. \”We know we will prove ourselves with actions and not words, but that kind of sh** is unwarranted, especially since it is impacting people who have nothing to do with Oculus.\”

It is Carmack\’s first comment on the deal since it was announced Tuesday. \”I wasn\’t personally involved in any of the negotiations — I spent an afternoon talking technology with [Facebook CEO] Mark Zuckerberg, and the next week I find out that he bought Oculus.\”

Book Pick:

At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, Ready Player One is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.

Conferences

After going on sale at 10:00 AM Pacific Time today, tickets for Apple\’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco have already sold out in two minutes.

WWDC 2011 sold out in under 12 hours, while the 2010 edition took eight days. This marks the sixth straight year that WWDC has sold out, a streak that began in 2008.

LinuxFest Northwest is entering its 14th year! 2012 was our most successful event yet, with around 1200 attendees over the weekend. And 2013 will be undoubtedly our biggest change yet.

The App Exit

I’m happy to announce that I’ve sold a majority stake in Instapaper to Betaworks. We’ve structured the deal with Instapaper’s health and longevity as the top priority, with incentives to keep it going well into the future. I will continue advising the project indefinitely, while Betaworks will take over its operations, expand its staff, and develop it further.
