  • Plasma Mobile test ISOs — 44% poll participants wanting to test Plasma Mobile on their device, and/or as a virtual machine, or on real machine.
  • Purism aims for convergence — Upon successful completion of our funding campaign, we started to look for a Designer to take care of the user experience for the Librem 5, and a web developer to help us improve the look & feel (and more technical parts) of our website in general. Today, I’m glad to finally welcome them publicly!
  • Mycroft Mark 2 — What sets Mark II apart? It’s open source. This means your personal data stays private, you can customize your experience, and Mycroft is a neutral player in the voice game, allowing you to be confident in your personal preference of apps and skills.
  • Ubuntu 18.04 to revert to Xorg by default — We have decided that we will ship Xorg by default, and that Wayland will be an optional session available from the login screen.
  • Torvalds unhappy with Intel’s response to Spectre — Instead of treating Spectre as a bug, the chip maker is offering Spectre protection as a feature.
  • Are the BSDs dying? — Too few eyeballs on code is a security issue as vulnerabilities go unreported and unpatched. Can FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and NetBSD survive?

Linux Solves Rubics Cube

The fastest time for a human to solve a Rubik’s cube is 4.9 seconds. This robot can do it in 1.019 seconds.

Software engineers Jay Flatland and Paul Rose built this piece of kit, which uses four webcams to determine the state of the jumbled cube. The information is then fed into a computer, using the Kociemba Rubik’s cube-solving algorithm to work out a set of moves to solve the puzzle. A set of small motors mounted in a 3D-printed frame then swivel the, presumably extremely well-oiled, Rubik’s cube.

The previous quickest time for a robot to solve the cube is 2.39 seconds, so it looks like this could be a record breaker; however, they’re still waiting for official verification from Guinness World Records.

Pretty impressive. Although some super slow-motion footage wouldn’t go amiss.

Jolla files for debt restructuring

Jolla Ltd, the mobile company from Finland today announced that its latest financing round which aimed to end in November, has been postponed and the company needs to adjust its operations accordingly. At the same time the company has filed for a debt restructuring program in Finland, to ensure the continuity of its business. Jolla will also temporarily lay off a big part of its personnel.

Months after the smartphone company Jolla announced its split and intent to focus on Sailfish OS licensing, its financial situation has not improved. Jolla’s latest financing round has been delayed and so they have had to file for debt restructuring in Finland. As part of that, the company is temporarily laying off a big part of its personnel (Google translation of Finnish original). Jolla co-founder Antti Saarnio said, “Our operating system Sailfish OS is in great shape currently and it is commercially ready. Unfortunately the development until this point has required quite a lot of time and money (PDF). To get out of this death valley we need to move from a development phase into a growth phase. At the same time we need to adapt our cost levels to the new situation. One of the main actions is to tailor the operating system to fit the needs of different clients. We have several major and smaller potential clients who are interested in using Sailfish OS in their projects.”

The 2015 Kernel Summit Highlights

Power-management knobs

Rafael Wysocki started off his 2015 Kernel Summit session by noting that
every generation of hardware promises to be more power-efficient than its
predecessor. But that efficiency is not always experienced by users. In
an ideal world, systems should run in the most power-efficient mode
whenever possible and only employ the less-efficient modes when performance
requirements demand it. Real-world systems, though, tend not to run as
efficiently as they can. Rafael came with a proposal that, he thought,
might improve the situation, but it’s not clear that the idea will be
implemented.

Benchmarking and performance trends

Mel took over to say that, from his point of view (watching
over performance for SUSE), there have not been that many scheduler
problems. His biggest complaint, instead, was with the Intel “pstate”
driver, which handles CPU frequency and voltage management on Intel
processors. This driver, he said, is making poor decisions. CPUs never
seem to go above the minimum frequency on lightly-loaded machines, with
results that look like a 10-20% scheduler performance regression,
but are really due to pstate. This is, he said, a serious issue; we are at
a point where we are extremely efficient at doing nothing, but not so good
at actually doing work. As a result, a lot of users are disabling pstate
altogether.

QEMU 2.5-RC0 Released, Supports VirtIO-GPU 3D Mode

Being good at going full Salesman on things comes with a certain responsibility if you care about your audience. Touting the security of Telegram should be avoided. By all means, use it if it fits your needs but please don’t portrait Telegram as something vetted and secure, that’s doing the audience a disservice.

Only half of the equation (the client) is open source and the protocol is full of weirdness and outright flaws. I believe their crypto contest charade was even featured and scoffed at on one of the network’s channels a while ago.

Its encryption score in the following table should be taken with a grain of salt since it’s vulnerable to ‘hostile server’ attacks, which are sadly just a subpoena away:

Microsoft skips ‘too good’ Windows 9, jumps to Windows 10 | InfoWorld

Deeming Windows 9 ‘too good to release,’ Microsoft execs shelve follow-up to Windows 8 and proceed to Windows 10.

The Windows 9 internal beta was a phenomenal success,” said Microsoft PR rep Cheryl Tunt. “I mean, it blew Windows 8 out of the water, and as we all know, Windows 8 is nigh flawless. After discussion at the C level, Microsoft has decided it will not mess with success and will leave Windows 9 exactly as it is. As such, work is now getting under way on Windows 10, which should see a public release.”

The decision to jump to Windows 10 was announced during an all-company meeting by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, who took the stage in front of a banner reading “Mission Accomplished.”

Windows 10 is the official name for Microsoft’s next version of Windows | The Verge

Microsoft is officially unveiling the name for the next release of Windows today: Windows 10. While the software maker had referred to Windows 10 as codename Windows Threshold internally, today’s official naming puts any rumors of Windows, Windows TH, Windows X, Windows One, and even Windows 9 to bed. It’s simply Windows 10, marking a jump from the mixed reception of Windows 8.

Microsoft outlines some of the specific features that are coming to Windows 10:

Expanded Start menu. The familiar Start menu is back, providing quick one-click access to the functions and files that people use most, and it includes a new space to personalize with favorite apps, programs, people and websites.

Apps that run in a window. Apps from the Windows Store now open in the same format that desktop programs do. They can be resized and moved around, and have title bars at the top allowing users to maximize, minimize and close with a click.

Snap enhancements. Working in multiple apps at once is easier and more intuitive with snap improvements. A new quadrant layout allows up to four apps to be snapped on the same screen. Windows will also show other apps and programs running for additional snapping, and it will even make smart suggestions on filling available screen space with other open apps.

New Task view button. The new Task view button on the task bar enables one view for all open apps and files, allowing for quick switching and one-touch access to any desktop created.

Multiple desktops. Instead of too many apps and files overlapping on a single desktop, it’s easy to create and switch between distinct desktops for different purposes and projects — whether for work or personal use.

The “Metro” start screen and Microsoft’s traditional Start Menu have been combined; no longer is the screen one huge grid of tiles for desktop users.

There’s a new universal search in the start menu that pulls in results from the web, and Microsoft is also talking up its “task view,” which helps users master Windows’ multitasking features. Which is basically virutal desktops.

There are Compiz effects through out the UI too.

Microsoft’s Windows 10: What’s new and how to get the preview bits | ZDNet

on October 1, Microsoft will open up its preview.windows.com site so that those interested in testing the Enterprise Technical Preview version of the operating system can download the early bits. Those who sign up through the preview site will be enrolled in Insiders Program. Via this program, Microsoft will push regular updates through Windows Update to the initial tech preview over the coming months.

Insiders also will be asked to provide feedback in a variety of forms to Microsoft about the features they like and dislike.

The Enterprise Technical Preview (Build 9841) will work on x86 machines only. Microsoft is not yet making available a test build of the ARM version of Windows 10. Microsoft officials said to expect that more consumer-focused preview to arrive in early 2015.

Hackers charged with stealing over $100m in US army and Xbox technology | Technology | theguardian.com

Four men have been charged with breaking into the computer systems of Microsoft, the US army and leading games manufacturers, as part of an alleged international hacking ring that netted more than $100m in intellectual property, the US Department of Justice said on Tuesday.

The four, aged between 18 and 28, are alleged to have stolen Xbox technology, Apache helicopter training software and pre-release copies of games such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, according to an indictment dating from April that was unsealed on Tuesday.

Two of the hackers pleaded guilty earlier in the day, the DoJ said.

“These were extremely sophisticated hackers … Don’t be fooled by their ages,” assistant US attorney Ed McAndrew said after a court hearing on Tuesday.

According to prosecutors, the defendants stole intellectual property and other proprietary data related to the Xbox One gaming console and Xbox Live online gaming system, and pre-release copies of popular video games. The Department of Justice (DoJ) claimed the technology was worth between $100m and $200m, a figure hotly disputed by one of those facing charges.

The four in the US had been jointly charged with with conspiracies to commit computer fraud, copyright infringement, wire fraud, mail fraud, identity theft and theft of trade secrets. They were also individually charged with individual counts of aggravated identity theft, unauthorised computer access, copyright infringement and wire fraud. The charges were based on a federal grand jury indictment returned in April.

Other targets of the alleged hacks included Microsoft, and game companies Epic Games and Valve, the DoJ announced. It said the US has seized $620,000 in proceeds “related to the charged conduct”.

“As the indictment charges, the members of this international hacking ring stole trade secret data used in high-tech American products, ranging from software that trains US soldiers to fly Apache helicopters to Xbox games that entertain millions around the world,” said assistant US attorney General Caldwell.

Report: Game consoles most widely used video streaming devices in US | Ars Technica

A Dallas-based market research firm published a report about American video-streaming habits, and its numbers told a story that we saw coming for years: Video game consoles have become the leading device category for video streaming app use.

On Tuesday, Parks Associates published its report, which surveyed 10,000 American homes in early 2014, and it found 44 percent of broadband-using respondents considered a game console their “primary connected” device for accessing non-gaming Internet content, particularly video apps like Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Amazon Video. Out of those console owners, “roughly three quarters” log into consoles to watch video apps at least once a week, and 40 percent of them watch over 10 hours of content a week.

The report goes on to rank broadband homes’ preferred devices, with game consoles beating, in order, smart TVs (20 percent), streaming media boxes (12 percent), and Blu-ray players (nine percent).

Apple Addresses iOS ‘Backdoor’ Concerns by Outlining Legitimate Uses for Targeted Services

Earlier this week, forensic expert Jonathan Zdziarski attracted attention for his disclosures of what appeared to be “backdoors” in iOS that could allow for covert data collection of users’ information from their devices. While Apple issued a statement denying that anything nefarious was involved, the company has now posted a new support document (via Cabel Sasser) offering a limited description of the three services highlighted in Zdziarski’s talk.

Each of these diagnostic capabilities requires the user to have unlocked their device and agreed to trust another computer. Any data transmitted between the iOS device and trusted computer is encrypted with keys not shared with Apple. For users who have enabled iTunes Wi-Fi Sync on a trusted computer, these services may also be accessed wirelessly by that computer.

The three processes include:
  • com.apple.mobile.pcapd: Diagnostic packet capture to a trusted computer, used for diagnosing app issues and enterprise VPN connection problems.

  • com.apple.mobile.file_relay: Used on internal devices and can be accessed (with user permission) by AppleCare for diagnostic purposes on the user’s device.

  • com.apple.mobile.house_arrest: Used by iTunes for document transfer and by Xcode during app development and testing.

Apple Confirms “Back Doors”; Downplays Their Severity | Jonathan Zdziarski’s Domain

Apple is being completely misleading by claiming that file relay is only for copying diagnostic data. If, by diagnostic data, you mean the user’s complete photo album, their SMS, Notes, Address Book, GeoLocation data, screenshots of the last thing they were looking at, and a ton of other personal data — then sure… but this data is far too personal in nature to ever be needed for diagnostics. In fact, diagnostics is almost the complete opposite of this kind of data. And once again, the user is never prompted to give their permission to dump all of this data, or notified in any way on-screen. Apple insists AppleCare gets your consent, but this must be a verbal consent, as it is certainly not a technological consent. What’s more, if this service really were just for diagnostic use, you’d think that it would respect backup encryption, so that everything coming off the phone is encrypted with the user’s backup password.

I give Apple credit for acknowledging these services, and at least trying to give an answer to people who want to know why these services are there – prior to this, there was no documentation about file relay whatsoever, or its 44 data services to copy off personal data. They appear to be misleading about its capabilities, however, in downplaying them, and this concerns me. I wonder if the higher ups at Apple really are aware of how much non-diagnostic personal information it copies out, wirelessly, bypassing backup encryption. All the while that Apple is downplaying it, I suspect they’ll also quietly fix many of the issues I’ve raised in future versions. At least I hope so. It would be wildly irresponsible for Apple not to address these issues, especially now that the public knows about them.

BBC News – Windows development set to be ‘unified’ by Microsoft

Chief executive Satya Nadella discussed the effort while briefing analysts following Tuesday’s earnings update.

“We will streamline the next version of Windows from three operating systems into one single converged operating system for screens of all sizes,” he said.

It does bring Microsoft closer to another OS developer, Canonical, which has promoted the idea of its Ubuntu system powering both phones and desktops. Canonical previously highlighted that one benefit of this strategy was that a handset could double up as a low-power desktop PC if it was plugged into a monitor and connected to a mouse.

What ‘one Windows’ really means (and doesn’t)

Later in the call, Nadella attempted to clarify his remarks, but not in time to stop the breathless headlines.

1. A single team developing all Windows variants. This team has been in place since July 2013 when Microsoft created the unified Operating System Group under Terry Myerson. This team works on the Windows Phone OS, Windows Embedded, Windows (for PCs and tablets) and the Xbox One operating systems.

2. A single “core.” Windows Phone, Windows 8, Windows RT and Windows Server are all built on top of a common “core,” known as the NT core. Because of Microsoft’s layered architectural approach, each OS builds on top of this core using different pieces that make sense for the form factor/hardware on which it runs.

3. A unified Store and commerce model across all platforms. Microsoft has taken steps toward unifying its Windows Phone Store and Windows Store over the past year. But it still has a ways to go to reach the holy grail: A single store that spans all platforms. The next major versions of Windows Phone and Windows (both codenamed Threshold) may be where a single Store debuts. I am not sure when Xbox apps will be added to that Store.

4. A unified developer platform. Microsoft execs have been promising for years that one day, developers will be able to write once and run on any Windows variant. To get there, Microsoft is working to unify, as much as possible, the core set of application programming interfaces (APIs) and the developer tooling for building apps for Windows Phone, Windows and the Xbox operating system.

Here’s what “one Windows” doesn’t mean: There will not be one Windows SKU. Or even two. There will continue to be multiple versions of Windows.

*Nadella stated this quite plainly on the earnings call: *

“Our SKU strategy will remain by segment,” he said. “We will have multiple SKUs for enterprises, we will have for OEM, we will have for end-users…. We will be disclosing and talking about our SKUs as we get further along.”

Firefox 33 Integrates Cisco’s OpenH264

As promised, version 33 of the Firefox browser will fetch the OpenH264 module from Cisco, which enables Firefox to decode and encode H.264 video, for both the <video> tag and WebRTC, which has a codec war on this matter. The module won’t be a traditional NPAPI plugin, but a so-called Gecko Media Plugin (GMP), Mozilla’s answer to the disliked Pepper API. Firefox had no cross-platform support for H.264 before.

Comcast plans to encrypt email exchanged with Google\’s Gmail | PCWorld

Comcast plans to work with Google to encrypt email exchanged between its own servers and Gmail, a Comcast spokesman said on Tuesday night.

Comcast supports Transport Layer Service encryption for email messages, and Comcast employees \”plan to ramp up with Gmail in next few weeks,\” a Comcast spokesman said via a Twitter message. More details will be revealed at the Messaging, Malware and Mobile Anti-Abuse Working Group meeting next week, he said, which will be held in Brussels. Comcast is a meeting sponsor.

UPDATE 3-Sprint agrees to pay about $40/shr to buy T-Mobile -source | Reuters

Sprint Corp has agreed to pay about $40 per share to buy T-Mobile US Inc, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters on Wednesday, signalling progress in a long-contemplated deal to merge the third- and fourth-largest U.S. wireless carriers.

At that price, about a 17 percent premium to the carrier\’s Wednesday close, T-Mobile would be worth more than $32 billion.

Deutsche Telekom owns 67 percent of T-Mobile and is expected to keep a 15 to 20 percent stake of the combined company as part of the deal, the source said on condition of anonymity because the discussions were private.

Intel aims to eliminate all PC cables in 2016 – CNET

On stage at the Computex, Intel\’s Kirk Skaugen, senior vice president and general manager of the PC Client Group, demonstrated wireless display, docking and charging features that will close the loop on the final few mandatory cables in the typical PC environment.

The high-speed WiGig standard will be used as the short range \”docking\” technology, instantly creating a connection to a screen and peripherals when a device is moved within range and then swapping back out to standalone usage by just picking up and walking away. WiGig delivers speeds of up to 7Gbps.

For power, Skaugen demonstrated Rezence, the magnetic resonance charging technology, promoted by the Alliance 4 Wireless Power (A4WP), that Intel is aligned with. The system can be installed under a table surface, with magnetic resonance capable of charging through 2 inches of wood.

With Skylake expected second half of 2015 it\’s likely devices based on Intel\’s reference designs would start to hit the market in 2016.

Microsoft: Software update unlocks more GPU bandwidth on Xbox One | Ars Technica

Microsoft says the new firmware will also help developers extract more power from the system\’s Graphical Processing Unit (GPU), even though the base hardware in the system is obviously staying the same.

\”In June we’re releasing a new SDK making it possible for developers to access additional GPU resources previously reserved for Kinect and system functions,\” a Microsoft spokesperson told Ars today. \”The additional resources allow access to up to 10 percent additional GPU performance. We\’re committed to giving developers new tools and flexibility to make their Xbox One games even better by giving them the option to use the GPU reserve in whatever way is best for them and their games.\”

Was Ubuntu Edge a Sign?

System76

Brought to you by: System76

The number came out of doing some homework on what would be needed to bring the phone to market. And ultimately bringing a phone like this to market requires a lot industrial design work, electrical design, testing, etc. We could have gone for a lower total number, but with a much higher per-unit cost. So, we tried to find something that was a good compromise.

“We thought we could take a leap forward two or three years in terms of the capabilities of today’s phone through the Edge,”

– ::snip:: –

“It certainly raised eyebrows in the phone industry in a good way. Folks feel there’s a hunger for something new and it sent a signal as to what that something new might look like,” said Shuttleworth.

“I think the full Ubuntu convergence experience will not be in the first round of Ubuntu phones, which we’re targeting for the first quarter 2014,” Silber told CNET. “Just phones, not a full converged plug-into-your-monitor device,” she added, stressing, “I think convergence is the future. It may take many forms.”

The ReactOS software includes binary and source distributions of the latest ReactOS. This includes the kernel, various subsystems and some basic applications.

Notes:

  • Installer looks straight outta NT4 / Win2k DOS days.

  • File system choices are FAT32 or ext2

  • In a future where ChromeOS and tablets are a viable platform for the majority of your computing, ReactOS could play the role of enabling legacy support for old Win32 apps. In a sense, further eliminating in shred of legitimacy the Windows platform could hold 7+ years out.
