Some key points:

• We don’t share the IP address with the vendor, in fact it’s not even saved in the MySQL database
• The MachineId is a salted hash of your actual /etc/machine-id
• The LVFS doesn’t store reports for firmware that it did not sign itself, i.e. locally built firmware archives will be ignored and not logged
• You can disable the reporting functionality in all applications by editing /etc/fwupd/remotes.d/*.conf
• We have an official GDPR document too — we’ll probably link to that from the Privacy panel in GNOME

• Multi-Architecture Support: Fedora 27 Atomic Host is available for 64-bit ARM and Power8 processor architectures as well as 64-bit Intel (i.e. AArch64, ppc64le and x86_64). Not only are we distributing ISOs and cloud images for all three architectures, we will also be providing two-week OSTree updates for them as well.

• Containerized Kubernetes: As planned, the Kubernetes binaries have been removed from the base image for Atomic Host. This change both shrinks the base image size, and allows users to install the container orchestration platform and version of their choice, whether it’s Kubernetes, OpenShift, or something else. Look for a blog post tommorrow on how to migrate your Kubernetes install.
• Atomic Workstation Updates: For over a year, Fedora contributors have been experimenting with an RPM-OStree build of Fedora Workstation, with all of their applications running in containers or Flatpaks. This build, now called “Atomic Workstation”, will be receiving regular updates starting with this release.
• One Big OverlayFS2 Volume: New Atomic Host systems will now get a single filesystem volume by default, which will share binaries, system containers, and OCI/docker containers using OverlayFS2. Users who need to partition container images and storage onto a separate volume can still do so using kickstart options and container-storage-setup configuration.

• OSTree Package Layering Improvements: RPM-OStree has added two capabilities supporting modifying individula systems: remove and replace overrides, and LiveFS layering.

• Project Atomic

Use immutable infrastructure to deploy and scale your containerized
applications. Project Atomic builds OSes, tools, and containers for
cloud native platforms.

The team has been triaging and fixing bugs in every aspect of the codebase, tidying up artwork, removing corner cases, and ensuring cross-desktop integration. For the first time, we offer our Wayland integration on long-term support, so you can be sure we will continue to provide bug fixes and improvements to the Wayland experience.

The list of new features in Plasma 5.12 LTS doesn’t stop with improved performance. You can also look forward to the following:

• Wayland-only Night Color feature that lets you adjust the screen color temperature to reduce eye strain
• Usability improvement for the global menu: adding a global menu panel or window decoration button enables it without needing an extra configuration step
• KRunner can now be completely used with on-screen readers such as Orca
• Notification text is selectable again and allows you to copy links from notifications
• The weather applet can now show the temperature next to the weather status icon on the panel
• Clock widget’s text is now sized more appropriately
• System Activity and System Monitor display per-process graphs for the CPU usage
• Windows shadows are horizontally centered and larger by default
• The Properties dialog now shows file metadata
• The Icon applet now uses favicons for website shortcuts
• The Kickoff application menu has an optimized layout

• FSF receives large Bitcoin donation — The Free Software Foundation (FSF) announced it has received a record-breaking charitable contribution of 91.45 Bitcoin from the Pineapple Fund, valued at $1 million at the time of the donation.

Have we gone too far with containers?

Engineers are now coming up with crazy solutions to a typical problem. Vulnerable software that’s spreading around the web in containers.

CoreOS says over 80 percent of Docker images stored in its Quay service are still vulnerable to the infamous Heartbleed bug, for example.

Clair can scan containers for known vulnerabilities and then alert developers of potential issues. CoreOS is getting this data from the vulnerability databases of Red Hat, Ubuntu and Debian.

In a broad-ranging question and answer session, Linus Torvalds, Linux’s founder, shared his thoughts on the current state of open source and Linux.

Linus Torvalds: Security is never going to be perfect

Linus seemed as excited about containers as a fish would be about a bicycle. “I am so happy that the kernel tends to be fairly far removed from all these issues, all the buzzwords and all the new technologies,” he said. “We end up being in a situation where we only care about us working on and how people use the kernel. I am so focused on the kernel that I don’t even care very much. We see when people need technologies from us to implement all of this, obviously there is c-groups and virtualization, if you do it that way. So we see that side of it. But at the same time, I don’t get involved in politics between all the different groups and all the stuff that goes on top of the kernel. And I am really happy I don’t have to.”

Torvalds: Don’t talk to me about containers and other buzzwords

“I am a very plodding, pedestrian kind of person,” Torvalds said during a Q&A session with Linux Foundation boss Jim Zemlin at LinuxCon in Seattle on Wednesday. “I look six months ahead. I look ahead at this release and I know what’s coming up in the next one.

“I don’t think planning 10 years ahead is necessarily very sane. Because if you think about Linux ten years back and where Linux was ten years ago, trying to plan for where we are now would have been completely insane.”

Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago – RUNS LINUX

I visited the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago recently and one of the exhibits was about robotics. I spotted one robot that recognizes faces and appears to be controlled by a Linux box.

I would also like to share my recent first experience with System76. I purchased a Meerkat to replace my HTPC that just died. The day after I made the purchase, the Meerkat went on sale. System76 called to notify me that because of the sale, I could either get my money back for the amount of the sale, or I could get a free memory upgrade and still get some money back!
Frankly, I’m astounded at that level of customer service. I’ve never experienced anything like it before and I thought it deserved a mention.

FileZilla is a free and open source FTP client. It’s available for all major operating systems including Windows, Mac and obviously Linux. The latest version includes couple of new features and few bug fixes that make it more stable.

Google’s Linux Router

Google and TP-Link unveiled a Gentoo Linux based “OnHub” WiFi-ac router for consumers with 13 antennas, Bluetooth, and ZigBee, controlled by a mobile app.

Google’s embedded and IoT horizons appear to be expanding beyond its own Nest subsidiary. The company, which is now technically just another company in the new Alphabet umbrella organization, has partnered with router-maker TP-Link to launch a $200 WiFi router, and potentially, a home automation router. Later this year, Google says it will announce other OnHub branded devices, including an Asus-made device.

The OnHub is available for pre-order at $200 at a variety of locations including the Google Store. Retail availability is set for Aug. 31. More information may be found in the Google OnHub announcement, the Google OnHub page, and the TP-Link OnHub page.

Germany to Ditch Linux for Windows

Two influential politicians in a German city that ditched Microsoft in favour of Linux are agitating for a switch back to Windows.

The councillors from Munich’s conservative CSU party have called the custom version of Ubuntu installed on their laptops “cumbersome to use” and “of very limited use”.

The letter from the two senior members of the city’s IT committee asks mayor Dieter Reiter to consider removing the Linux-based OS and to install Windows with Microsoft Office.

The city spent years migrating about 15,000 staff to Limux, a custom-version of Ubuntu, and other open source software – a move the city said had saved it more than €10m ($11m).

Google removes “always listening” code from Chromium

The code in question will no longer be included, starting with Chromium build r335874. Prior builds automatically downloaded an extension that could tap a microphone for the purpose of hearing voice commands.

On the surface that doesn’t sound nefarious when you consider that Google’s Chrome browser — which includes proprietary Google code — has had a similar function for months.

Chromium Finally Gets HiDPI Support for Linux After Being Ignored for Three Years – Softpedia

“I’m happy to notice that High DPI is now fully supported in Chromium for Linux starting in Dev Channel. If you don’t have a HighDPI screen, you can still run chromium with the –force-device-scale-factor=2 switch to see how scaling works there,” wrote François Beaufort.

• Full HiDPI support in Chrome is now available in the main branch google-chrome as of version 43.0.2357.2-1 and works out of the box as tested with Gnome and Cinnamon.

Ads Based On Browsing History Are Coming To All Firefox Users

Mozilla has announced plans to launch a feature called “Suggested Tiles,” which will provide sponsored recommendations to visit certain websites when other websites show up in the user’s new tab page. The tiles will begin to show up for beta channel users next week, and the company is asking for feedback. For testing purposes, users will only see Suggested Tiles “promoting Firefox for Android, Firefox Marketplace, and other Mozilla causes.” It’s not yet known what websites will show up on the tiles when the feature launches later this summer. The company says, “With Suggested Tiles, we want to show the world that it is possible to do relevant advertising and content recommendations while still respecting users’ privacy and giving them control over their data.”

Mozilla gives up on its dream of a $25 Firefox smartphone | The Verge

CNET reports that in an email to employees sent out on Thursday, CEO Chris Beard made it clear that the company will soon be changing its mobile strategy. “We have not seen sufficient traction for a $25 phone,” Beard wrote. He went on to say, “We will focus on efforts that provide a better user experience, rather than focusing on cost alone.”

Intel takes on CoreOS with its own container-based Linux

In a detailed article at LWN.net, Intel engineer Arjan van de Ven described Intel’s aim to build a container system “where one can use the isolation of virtual-machine technology along with the deployment benefits of containers.”

The resulting system, Clear Containers, uses Linux’s kernel-native KVM hypervisor, but runs it in such a way that it avoids most of the startup time overhead typically associated with spinning up a KVM instance. Intel also claims it can leverage systemd and a few kernel-level memory-organization tricks to slim down and speed up the process even further.

Single Verizon IP Address Used For Hundreds of Windows 7 Activations

A presumed pirate with an unusually large appetite for activating Windows 7 has incurred the wrath of Microsoft. In a lawsuit filed in a Washington court, Microsoft said that it logged hundreds of suspicious product activations from a single Verizon IP address and is now seeking damages. Who he, she or they are behind address 74.111.202.30 is unknown at this point, but according to Microsoft they’re responsible for some serious Windows pirating. “As part of its cyberforensic methods, Microsoft analyzes product key activation data voluntarily provided by users when they activate Microsoft software, including the IP address from which a given product key is activated,” the lawsuit reads. The company says that its forensic tools allow the company to analyze billions of activations of software and identify patterns “that make it more likely than not” that an IP address associated with activations is one through which pirated software is being activated.

GOG’s Take On Steam Goes Live Today

GOG Galaxy, which you can download here, is now in open beta. Like Steam, Origin, and other PC gaming clients, it’s a stand-alone program with its own achievements, friend lists, and massively restrictive DRM. Just kidding. Anyone who follows the people behind GOG—a subsidiary of _Witcher 3 _developer CD Projekt Red—knows they’re as anti-DRM as it gets.

CoreOS Gives Up Control of Non-Docker Linux Container Standard | Data Center Knowledge

Taking a major step forward in its quest to drive a Linux container standard that’s not created and controlled by Docker or any other company, CoreOS spun off management of its App Container project into a stand-alone foundation. Google, VMware, Red Hat, and Apcera have announced support for the standard.

Becoming a more formalized open source project, the App Container (appc) community now has a governance policy and has added a trio of top software engineers that work on infrastructure at Google, Twitter, and Red Hat as “community maintainers.

Apple pushing music labels to kill free Spotify streaming ahead of Beats relaunch

The Verge has learned that Apple has been pushing major music labels to force streaming services like Spotify to abandon their free tiers, which will dramatically reduce the competition for Apple’s upcoming offering. The Roman Airport, Runs Linux!

During a recent trip to Rome I came upon a helpdesk-terminal kind of thing, a pedestal with a touch-screen for information and a microphone and camera for video calls with personnel.

That was awesome, it helped me out since my Italian is non-existent, and Italian organisational skills leaves a lot to be desired. The next one I saw however seems to have had some problem, and showed only a gnome desktop with a very Ubuntu-esque background, though I couldn’t quite place it.

After I had a few beers I went to the washroom (that’s how we say bathroom up here in the north) and to my surprise I saw this on the ad screen on the wall… with my pants already unbuttoned I pulled my phone out and took some pictures, as I was doing that a guy walked in and gave me a weird look. So I had to explain to him what the hell I was doing.

GNOME Software, GNOME’s App Store, Is Drawing Some Fresh Criticism

Starting in December and continuing into January are various Fedora development threads of users questioning various GNOME motives with their GNOME Software program. In particular, right now, the GNOME Software application center doesn’t like CLI-only packages for installation but only those with a GUI. Additionally, GNOME Software is limited in showing packages for non-GNOME desktop environments unless certain parameters are set.

It’s always been difficult for us to hire really good developers, just because of where we are. Our office is here in Atlanta GA, not exactly a hotbed of cool startups in the last few years. On top of that we’re fundamentally an email company, which is far from a sexy problem for geeks to sink their teeth into. systemd

systemd is a suite of basic building blocks for a Linux system. It provides a system and service manager that runs as PID 1 and starts the rest of the system. systemd provides aggressive parallelization capabilities, uses socket and D-Bus activation for starting services, offers on-demand starting of daemons, keeps track of processes using Linux control groups, supports snapshotting and restoring of the system state, maintains mount and automount points and implements an elaborate transactional dependency-based service control logic. systemd supports SysV and LSB init scripts and works as a replacement for sysvinit.

The Biggest Myths of systemd

Since we first proposed systemd for inclusion in the distributions it has been frequently discussed in many forums, mailing lists and conferences. In these discussions one can often hear certain myths about systemd, that are repeated over and over again, but certainly don’t gain any truth by constant repetition. Revisiting How We Put Together Linux Systems

In a previous blog story I discussed
Factory Reset, Stateless Systems, Reproducible Systems & Verifiable Systems,
I now want to take the opportunity to explain a bit where we want to
take this with
systemd in the
longer run, and what we want to build out of it. This is going to be a
longer story, so better grab a cold bottle of
Club Mate before you start
reading.

Traditional Linux distributions are built around packaging systems
like RPM or dpkg, and an organization model where upstream developers
and downstream packagers are relatively clearly separated: an upstream
developer writes code, and puts it somewhere online, in a tarball. A
packager than grabs it and turns it into RPMs/DEBs. The user then
grabs these RPMs/DEBs and installs them locally on the system. For a
variety of uses this is a fantastic scheme: users have a large
selection of readily packaged software available, in mostly uniform
packaging, from a single source they can trust. In this scheme the
distribution vets all software it packages, and as long as the user
trusts the distribution all should be good. The distribution takes the
responsibility of ensuring the software is not malicious, of timely
fixing security problems and helping the user if something is wrong.

Greg Kroah-Hartman on Thursday night posted the “v2” revision of the KDBUS implementation for providing the kernel with a new IPC implementation that resembles the existing user-space D-Bus daemon while adding extra features.

CoreOS is building a container runtime, Rocket

We thought Docker would become a simple unit that we can all agree on.

Unfortunately, a simple re-usable component is not how things are playing out. Docker now is building tools for launching cloud servers, systems for clustering, and a wide range of functions: building images, running images, uploading, downloading, and eventually even overlay networking, all compiled into one monolithic binary running primarily as root on your server. The standard container manifesto was removed. We should stop talking about Docker containers, and start talking about the Docker Platform. It is not becoming the simple composable building block we had envisioned.

Fedora 21 Is Coming In Just Two Days With Big Improvements

Fedora 21 is the first release of the Fedora.Next initiative that separates Fedora out into three products: Fedora Cloud, Fedora Server, and Fedora Workstation. These new Fedora “products” are fairly self explanatory and it’s the Fedora 21 Workstation that most users will be after who want Fedora as a desktop operating system.

Fedora 21 is due out in a few days and as such I’ve been busy extensively testing and benchmarking this first Fedora Linux update in a year. To not much surprise given the close package versions to Ubuntu 14.10, Fedora 21 isn’t performing very differently from the Ubuntu Utopic Unicorn.

Firejail

Firejail is a SUID security sandbox program that reduces the risk of security breaches by restricting the running environment of untrusted applications using Linux namespaces. It allows a process and all its descendants to have their own private view of the globally shared kernel resources, such as the network stack, process table, mount table.

Firejail can sandbox any type of processes: servers, graphical applications, and even user login sessions. Written in C with virtually no dependencies, it should work on any Linux computer with a 3.x kernel version. Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, OpenSUSE, and Fedora packages are provided. An Arch Linux package is maintained in AUR.

Fierjail configures a basic sandbox, runs the program and exits. The sandbox consists of a mount namespace and a new process namespace. In the mount namespace, the main system directories are mounted read-only.

logstalgia – website access log visualization

Logstalgia is a website traffic visualization that replays or streams web-server access logs as a pong-like battle between the web server and an never ending torrent of requests.

Requests appear as colored balls (the same color as the host) which travel across the screen to arrive at the requested location. Successful requests are hit by the paddle while unsuccessful ones (eg 404 – File Not Found) are missed and pass through.

The paths of requests are summarized within the available space by identifying common path prefixes. Related paths are grouped together under headings. For instance, by default paths ending in png, gif or jpg are grouped under the heading Images. Paths that don’t match any of the specified groups are lumped together under a Miscellaneous section.

Attic is a secure backup program for Linux, FreeBSD and Mac OS X. Attic is designed for efficient data storage where only new or modified data is stored.
Features

Space efficient storage Variable block size deduplication is used to reduce the number of bytes stored by detecting redundant data. Each file is split into a number of variable length chunks and only chunks that have never been seen before are compressed and added to the repository.

Optional data encryption All data can be protected using 256-bit AES encryption and data integrity and authenticity is verified using HMAC-SHA256. Off-site backups Attic can store data on any remote host accessible over SSH as long as Attic is installed. Backups mountable as filesystems Backup archives are mountable as userspace filesystems for easy backup verification and restores.

The world’s most secure OS may have a serious problem

The Tails operating system is one of the most trusted platforms in cryptography, favored by Edward Snowden and booted up more than 11,000 times per day in May. But according to the security firm Exodus Intelligence, the program may not be as secure as many thought. The company says they’ve discovered an undisclosed vulnerability that will let attackers deanonymize Tails computers and even execute code remotely, potentially exposing users to malware attacks. Exodus is currently working with Tails to patch the bug, and expects to hand over a full report on the exploit next week.

CoreOS Stable Release

CoreOS 367.1.0, our first version on the stable channel, includes the following:

• Linux 3.15.2
• Docker 1.0.1
• Support on all major cloud providers, including Rackspace Cloud, Amazon EC2 (including HVM), and Google Compute Engine
• Commercial support via CoreOS Managed Linux

The CoreOS developers have announced the release of version 367.1.0 of the CoreOS distribution; this is the first version deemed to be stable and ready for production. “Please note: The stable release is not including etcd and fleet as stable, this release is only targeted at the base OS and Docker 1.0. etcd/fleet stable support will be in subsequent releases.”

CoreOS gets $8 million to bring a specialized Linux OS for server deployments to the mainstream

CoreOS, the company that makes a scalable version of Linux custom tailored for servers, has raised $8 million in a Series A funding round and is now offering support services for companies that might need help getting their server operating systems off the ground. The new commercial-help service is called CoreOS Managed Linux, which the company describes as being an “OS-as-a-service” offering that provides organizations with constant patches and updates in case they don’t want the responsibility for having to deal with that type of admin work themselves.

The monthly charges for the service can range anywhere from $1,000 to $100,000, depending on the number of servers one has, said Polvi.

When asked about current competitors in the field, Polvi named a few, noting that Red Hat’s Project Atomic is “a direct response to CoreOS.” Red Hat is also a member of the Docker governance board.
