Southeast LinuxFest 2015

Brought to you by: System76

SouthEast LinuxFest | Linux and in the GNU/South

The SouthEast LinuxFest is a community event for anyone who wants to learn more about Linux and Open Source Software. It is part educational conference and part social gathering. Like Linux itself, it is shared with attendees of all skill levels to communicate tips and ideas, and to benefit all who use Linux and Open Source Software. SELF is the place to learn, to make new friends, to network with new business partners, and most importantly, to have fun!

This talk will introduce you to the concepts behind botnets, and also show a live demonstration of a botnet on a sandboxed network.

We’ll start off by discussing the implications of running a botnet and the horrifying effect of distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks. I’ll demonstrate how bots behave on infected hosts, and give attendees a look at a command and control (C&C) system, which ultimately gives the bots their orders.

At the end of the discussion attendees will be encouraged to share their horror stories of botnet attacks on networks and systems that they’ve administered.

There are a lot of resources available online for those who’d like to research botnets. I’ll share some of these with attendees, but please realize that this talk is for research purposes only.

Ubuntu’s Unity 8 and Mir Get Another Massive, Exciting New Update

After announcing last week that both the next-generation Unity 8 user interface and Mir display server of the Ubuntu Linux operating system received a massive update with numerous new features, Kevin Gunn dropped an email on June 12 informing us about an exciting new update for said technologies.

HP kills The Machine, repurposes design around conventional technologies

Last year, HP announced it was building The Machine — a computer meant to leap as far above conventional modern systems as a high-end Xeon workstation is above an IBM mainframe from the 1960s. The entire system was designed to work with special-purpose cores and to use memristors as a universal memory architecture. The entire system would be tied together through extensive use of silicon photonics. It was bold, ambitious, and cutting-edge. And now, it’s pretty much dead.

Vox Media Adds ReCode to Its Stable of Websites – NYTimes.com

One reason for the renewed discussions may be Comcast’s role in encouraging Vox Media’s acquisition of Recode, the technology news site with a small audience but growing events business. Sources say Comcast, which owns minority stakes in both companies, gave its blessing to the deal several months ago. David Zilberman, a managing director of Comcast Ventures, its venture capital arm, sits on Vox Media’s board. He didn’t reply to a message seeking comment.

APNewsBreak: IRS says thieves stole tax info from 100,000

The thieves accessed a system called “Get Transcript,” where taxpayers can get tax returns and other filings from previous years. In order to access the information, the thieves cleared a security screen that required knowledge about the taxpayer, including Social Security number, date of birth, tax filing status and street address, the IRS said.

In total, Microsoft has now partnered with 31 global and local OEMs (11 in March and 20 today) to preinstall its apps onto Android devices throughout this year. Only time will tell if Microsoft’s apps end up actually being used more because of these deals.

OnePlus teases next smartphone announcement on Twitter

OnePlus says it is “Time to change” in its latest tweet, teasing a possible smartphone announcement for June 1. Chinese smartphone maker, OnePlus, relies heavily on Twitter for making announcements and promoting products and now the company would like to shake things up according to its latest tweet.

Update on Extension Signing and New Developer Agreement

Next week, we will activate two new features on AMO: signing of new add-on versions after they are reviewed, and add-on submission for developers who wish to have their add-ons signed but don’t want them listed on AMO. We will post another update once this happens. When this is done, all extension developers will be able to have their extensions signed, with enough time to update their users before signing becomes a requirement in release versions of Firefox.

Google I/O 2015 Preview: We’re doubling down on Android M, Chrome, Wear and more

Obviously Android M(arshmallow?), Wear updates including the next Moto 360 are at the top of the list. I’ve been hearing whispers that the new 360 is smaller, uses more modern/efficient SoC and a better OLED display. I’m praying to the robot dog overlords at Google that they have these as developer demo units (read: presents) at I/O. Use on iOS as has been found in code would also be nice for us who use both platforms. I’ve heard Samsung might have something round for us to feast on soon, and who knows, maybe we’ll see a $1,400 Tag Heuer Watch somehow with Intel Inside.

It also has corresponding develoment runtimes (org.gnome.Sdk and org.freedesktop.Sdk) that you can use to create applications for the platforms.

Linux Academy

Right, this has been stopping me from sleeping from a while because it has wound me up quite a lot. (slightly sarcastic)

On a certain episode of L.U.P Chris questioned how Ubuntu applications (made with the Ubuntu SDK) would look on non Ubuntu desktop environments, and quite rightly so came to the conclusion of “well, they would look out of place”. Fine.

Lets stop right now and talk about something else, Gnome “Apps”. Gnome Apps are fucking shit under anything that isn’t Gnome, however nobody is giving Gnome a hard time over this. Gnome is shitting all over everyone else with their poorly designed applications and the Ubuntu Desktop and other desktops are suffering because of it.

LinuxFest Northwest 2015

Bellingham, WA • April 25th & 26th

Holy cookies I did it..

I created a Jupiter Broadcasting Meetup group. I was inspired by the idea of how nice it would be to have a rough idea of how many folks will be making it out to LFNW. Just to help with planning.

But I realized my long-term plans are a bit more ambitious. As the weather gets nice in the Seattle area, I’d like to hold semi-frequent meetups with Jupiter Colony members that are in the area. Maybe once a month, record them, or stream them. Eat, chat, maybe even create show content.

Also as we travel to other fests, or hit the road, I’d like to have a tool to suss out interest in your area.

So after LFNW I’d like to use the group for that kind of stuff, which sounds like a lot of fun to me!

Dish’s Sling TV Sells Cable Channels on the Web for $20 | Re/code

Dish’s “Sling TV”* offering, which the company says will launch “soon,” comes with 10 notESPN channels, including the Food Network, CNN and the Travel Channel, and the ability to add more networks for additional fees.

Sling TV also won’t do you any good if you want to watch your local broadcast stations or any of the broadcast networks. So no local news, no “Good Wife” and no Sunday NFL games, unless you’re going to buy an antenna. On the other hand,

HP takes on Chromeboxes with $180, Windows-based Stream Mini PC

The Stream Mini is essentially a NUC-sized micro PC with a Celeron 2957U, 2GB of DDR3L/1600 and a 32GB M.2 SSD. In addition to the unit, you also get 200GB of Microsoft OneDrive storage free for two years as well as a $25 gift card to the Windows Store

The unit has Gigabit ethernet, four USB 3.0 ports, integrated 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.0, an SD card reader, combo audio jack for headphone and microphone and DisplayPort 1.2 and an HDMI 1.4 port. Windows 8.1 with Bing is thrown in too.

This is the new Sony Walkman | The Verge

The new Walkman ZX2 is real, and it’s designed exclusively with high-end audiophiles in mind — as Sony puts it themselves, this is “the fruit of continuous refinement in high audio quality technologies.”

Everything around the device is meant for an optimal audio experience. Specs-wise, the new Walkman supports DSD, WAV, AIFF, FLAC, Apple Lossless, and more. It supports Bluetooth for wireless streaming and NFC for one-touch connection to speakers and headphones.

All this high fidelity comes at a price. While the recent Walkman A17 comes in at around $300, the ZX2 will launch in the Spring for over $1,119.99.

It’s running years-old Android — 4.2 Jelly Bean, to be exact, which first debuted in November 2012. And while you can download and play apps from Google Play, this isn’t meant to match wits with today’s smartphones.

Google Cast will offer direct streaming from apps to Sony, LG, and Denon audio products this spring

At CES today, Google announced Google Cast for audio, which lets you play back sound from apps directly to speakers, sound bars, and A/V receivers. Sony, LG, and HEOS by Denon will be the first to offer “Google Cast Ready” products this spring, Google says.

The feature will work just like Google’s Chromecast streaming stick: Tap the “cast” button in an app on Android, iOS, or the web, and select a Google Cast-supported device. The speakers pull content directly from the cloud, not your device, “so you’ll get the best audio quality and can freely multi-task on your phone, tablet, or laptop, all without straining the battery,” Tomer Shekel, Product Manager of Google Cast for audio, said in a statement.

Google Cast for audio uses the same technology that powers the Chromecast. By offering it directly in products made by audio manufacturers, however, the company makes sure it isn’t the only one developing compatible hardware.

Google is naturally promising additional Google Cast Ready products, saying that “more brands” will offer them “later in 2015.”

Ferguson

About midnight, the streets near where 18-year-old Michael Brown was killed Aug. 9 grew tense. Bottles filled with ice and water were thrown at police. So was urine. Police said “agitators” hid behind journalists. Officers stormed a press area hunting for perpetrators. In all, 47 people were arrested — one for the third time since protests began.

Limbaugh said, “MSNBC practically went off the air for a while to have behind-closed-doors meetings to figure out how to deal with this new revelation,” rolling paid advertising in lieu of programming.

The release of information by the Ferguson police in the morning left Brown’s ties to the robbery unclear. Still MSNBC did not go to commercial break immediately. Nor did it go to break after showing frames from the video police alluded to. And certainly MSNBC never aired an extended commerical or infomercial as Limbaugh’s statements suggest.

Just hours before President Barack Obama condemned an Islamic terrorist group for beheading an American photojournalist in a video posted online, a cop in Ferguson, Missouri pointed a loaded gun at a live streaming photojournalist, telling him, “I will fucking kill you” — only the latest in a string of attacks against the media in the anti-police abuse protest going on its second week now.

The incident was caught on at least two videos and quickly went viral considering tens of thousands of Americans have been watching the drama unfold through live stream videos on their computers.

When the videographer demanded the officer’s name, he was told to “go fuck yourself.”

ISIS

British Prime Minister David Cameron has said that the person involved in the beheading of US journalist James Foley looked “increasingly likely” to be a British citizen, though the man has not been identified.

“We have not identified the individual responsible on the
video but from what we’ve seen it looks increasingly likely that
it is a British citizen. Now this is deeply shocking,”

Cameron told reporters on Wednesday.

High Note

“Regarding this issue with my son Jaycee, I feel very angry and very shocked. As a public figure, I’m very ashamed. As a father, I’m heartbroken,” Chan wrote.

Jaycee Chan, 31, and Taiwanese movie star Kai Ko, 23, were detained last Thursday, becoming the latest high-profile celebrities to be ensnared in one of China’s biggest anti-drug crackdowns in two decades.

Police said both actors tested positive for marijuana and admitted using the drug, and that 100 grams (3.53 ounces) of it were taken from Chan’s home.

“Jaycee and I together express our deep apology to society and the public,” Chan wrote.

I also want to make it clear none of these small form-factor dev boards/devices based on ARM have no Gigabit bandwidth capability. Not even on media boxes sold directly from China.

If you want real Gigabit bandwidth or 10Gbps bandwidth you can look elsewhere because you won\’t find it in ARM except in higher-end stuff like Calxeda or AMD.

Martin Wimpress Aka Wimpy – Works with the Mate project, does the Arch Linux Packaging, and is a project advocate.

Fixing Linux News

We chat with Michael Larabel the man behind Phoronix.com. We ask him if he feels his site\’s image suffered from the coverage of Steam for Linux, chat about the Phoronix Test Suite and more!

Reasons why I sometimes hate the openness of free software. We are not able to discuss anything without the media reporting about it on the same day. sigh

Dear free software media: you can leave the internal discussions as internal till there is a public statement. Thank you!

Warrantless dragnet surveillance of the Internet expands beyond the borders of the US. This week it was revealed Britain’s spy agency the GCHQ has secretly gained access to the network cables that carry the world’s phone calls and internet traffic, which it has admitted to sharing with the NSA. Effectively creating a world-wide police state.

Michael Hastings Death Twists

Hastings was researching a story about a privacy lawsuit brought by Florida socialite Jill Kelley against the Department of Defense and the FBI.

He was scheduled to meet with a Kelley representative next week in L.A. to discuss the case, according to a person close to Kelley. Hastings wrote for Rolling Stone and the website BuzzFeed.

He was best known for a 2010 Rolling Stone profile that led to the resignation of Gen. Stanley McChrystal.

On Wednesday night, the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks published a message on Twitter that Hastings had contacted a lawyer for the organization hours before his car smashed into a tree on North Highland Avenue in Los Angeles.

The message read: “Michael Hastings contacted WikiLeaks lawyer Jennifer Robinson just a few hours before he died, saying that the FBI was investigating him.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation said Hastings was never under investigation by the agency.

The bureau responded in a statement: “At no time was journalist Michael Hastings ever under investigation by the FBI.”

“Hey [redacted copy], the Feds are interviewing my ‘close friends and associates.’ Perhaps if authorities arrive ‘BuzzFeed GQ’, er HQ, may be wise to immediately request legal counsel before any conversations or interviews about our news-gathering practices or related journalism issues,” Hastings wrote in the email.

“Also: I’m onto a big story, and need to go off the radar for a bit,” he added. “All the best, and hope to see you all soon.” He signed the letter, “Michael.”

Roughly 15 hours later, 33-year-old Hastings was dead.

I’m here to state that I’ve seen dozens of cars hit walls and stuff at high speeds and the number of them that I have observed to eject their powertrains and immediately catch massive fire is, um, ah, zero. Modern cars are very good at not catching fire in accidents. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class, which is an evolutionary design from a company known for sweating the safety details over and above the Euro NCAP requirements, should be leading the pack in the not-catching-on-fire category.

The Media Misdirection in Full Force

Instead of devoting coverage to surveillance information revealed by Edward Snowden, the mainstream US media has slandered him.

GCHQ taps Fibre-optic Cables for Secret Access to World’s Communications

Britain’s spy agency GCHQ has secretly gained access to the network of cables which carry the world’s phone calls and internet traffic and has started to process vast streams of sensitive personal information which it is sharing with its American partner, the National Security Agency (NSA).

The sheer scale of the agency’s ambition is reflected in the titles of its two principal components: Mastering the Internet and Global Telecoms Exploitation, aimed at scooping up as much online and telephone traffic as possible. This is all being carried out without any form of public acknowledgement or debate.

The British spy agency GCHQ has access to the global network of communications, storing calls, Facebook posts and internet histories – and shares this data with the NSA, Edward Snowden has revealed to the Guardian in a new leak

Where in the World is Snowden

“My position with Booz Allen Hamilton granted me access to lists of machines all over the world the NSA hacked. That is why I accepted that position about three months ago,” he told Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post during an interview on June 12 that was published on Tuesday.

Edward Snowden signed on to work with intelligence contractor Booz Allen Hamilton only to obtain information about the United States’ surveillance programs, the NSA leaker told the South China Morning Post.

Edward Snowden, who is wanted by the United States for leaking state secrets, is not collaborating with Russia’s Federal Security Service, the FSB, anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks said on its Twitter feed Wednesday.

Second NSA whistleblower being ignored

But again I find it fascinating that so much attention is being put on Snowden at the exact same time as another NSA whistleblower Russell Tice just stepped forward with some incredible revelations including the fact that in 2004 the NSA was wire tapping soon-to-be president Barack Obama, then an Illinois State Senator, presumably for the purpose of blackmailing the information that they found out about him. As well as General David Petraeus, White House General Secretary Scott McClelland – a whole range of names that Russell Tice has just revealed.

Spying on US is Nothing New for the NSA
