Dirty COW was Livepatched in Ubuntu within Hours of Publication

Coincidentally, just before the vulnerability was published, we released the Canonical Livepatch Service for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. The thousands of users who enabled canonical-livepatch on their Ubuntu 16.04 LTS systems with those first few hours received and applied the fix to Dirty COW, automatically, in the background, and without rebooting!

New Legislation to Tackle Pirate Kodi Box Sellers Rejected

Modified Kodi and other IPTV devices allow users to access valuable content for free. Members of Parliament and industry players say they want to clamp down on such devices, by closing loopholes in copyright law to target sellers. This week, however, their suggestions to change the law in the UK were withdrawn.

DTrace for Linux 2016

Without DTrace on Linux, I began by using what was built in to the Linux kernel, ftrace and perf_events, and from them made a toolkit of tracing tools (_perf-tools). They have been invaluable. But I couldn’t do some tasks, particularly latency histograms and stack trace counting. We needed kernel tracing to be programmatic._

As a person that works primarily in a Windows environment, I like to see open source solutions that are business ready so that I can pitch them at work. The only way we will go from a Microsoft shop to a Linux shop is by finding open source applications that can meet the needs of the business. Ubuntu 17.04 to Be Dubbed “Zesty Zapus,” Will Launch on April 2017

That’s right, we’re talking about Ubuntu 17.04, whose codename will be “Zesty Zapus.” While some of you are enjoying their brand new Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) installations, the Ubuntu development team has started working on Ubuntu 17.04, which will be yet another normal release of the Linux-based operating system that will receive 9 months of support.

Has Ubuntu fallen behind, or setting a new bar of refinement? We load up our hardware with Ubuntu 16.10, walk away with some big surprises & two totally different experiences.

The VeraCrypt Audit Results – OSTIF.org

VeraCrypt 1.18 and its bootloaders were evaluated. This release included a number of new features including non-western developed encryption options, a boot loader that supports UEFI (modern BIOSes), and more.

QuarksLab found:

  • 8 Critical Vulnerabilities
  • 3 Medium Vulnerabilities
  • 15 Low or Informational Vulnerabilities / Concerns

This public disclosure of these vulnerabilities coincides with the release of VeraCrypt 1.19 which fixes the vast majority of these high priority concerns. Some of these issues have not been fixed due to high complexity for the proposed fixes, but workarounds have been presented in the documentation for VeraCrypt.

Hotfix Your Ubuntu Kernels with the Canonical Livepatch Service!

_Today, Canonical has _publicly launched_the Canonical Livepatch Service— an authenticated, encrypted, signed stream of Linux livepatches that apply to the 64-bit Intel/AMD architecture of the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial) Linux 4.4 kernel, addressing the highest and most critical security vulnerabilities, without requiring a reboot in order to take effect.

_ This is particularly amazing for Container hosts — Docker, LXD, etc. — as all of the containers share the same kernel, and thus all instances benefit.

BUG_ON oh Come on!

Devs have ‘NO F*CKING EXCUSE to knowingly kill the kernel’, says Linux lord

This BUG_ON() is triggered when CONFIG_DEBUG_VM is enabled. Some distributions such as the standard Fedora Kernel config enable it by default. Linus Torvalds has discovered that once this BUG_ON() triggers, the machine will have problems handling kernel paging requests and report that a reboot is required to fix a recursive fault from which the machine will never recover!

Fixing this bug is number one priority for Linus and he asked Johannes Weiner to work on it. Measures are being taken to avoid having it end up in a stable release, but please check your kernel config to make sure CONFIG_DEBUG_VM is disabled until the bug is fixed.

Linus re-emphasized and warned to not use BUG_ON() for debugging, but rather use WARN_ON() which is a safer alternative to BUG_ON().

The role of Free Software in a world that doesn’t care

The Free Software movement is about personal and social
liberties. Giving the owner and user of a computer control
over it. But most people don’t see the problem with a small
number of multinational mega-corporations having control over
everyone’s computers. They think: “Apple and Microsoft know
what they’re doing, and they do a good job, so why would I
need Free Software?”

Accepting that most people reject the Free Software message,
what can the Free Software movement contribute to the world?

Plasma 5.8 Review

KDE Plasma 5.8 LTS Released, This Is What’s New

Plasma 5.8 LTS “marks the point where the developers and designers are happy to recommend Plasma for the widest possible audience be they enterprise or non-techy home users,” project lead Jonathan Riddell says.

Modifier-only shortcuts, a highly requested functionality for the Plasma desktop, has been added. This allows you to launch an application by pressing a Meta key. The inclusion of Wayland to the Plasma desktop has facilitated the addition of this feature which has also been backported the X11.

Another notable feature is the support for right-to-left scripts like Urdu, Hebrew, etc. The widget explorer, window switcher, activity manager can be seen on the right side of the screen for such languages.

Wayland debuted on Plasma with 5.4 release. Since then, it has been continuously improved for stability and features. In the Plasma 5.8 LTS, a lot of work has been done on Wayland which now supports the GTK+ toolkit. The support for multitouch gestures and touchscreen devices has been enhanced, although, no default gestures are actually present as of now. The X11 and Wayland-based applications can now have a shared clipboard.

Review Notes
  • Now if you don’t recall KDE Neon is not a distro per sey, rather it’s a great way to play with KDE. Basically you get the Ubuntu base and the KDE Plasma Desktop and that’s it! Everything NOT KDE related is maintained by Canonical/Ubuntu. KDE Neon only cares about KDE’s stack.

  • They provide downloads to make initial setup easier for users. You could just do minimal install of Ubuntu and then install Neon PPA to essentially get the same thing.

  • They did however fix the wifi bug that some users experienced with Kubuntu so neon WILL fix other things if they need to but basically they “just care about KDE”

  • If you need more infomation go back and take a look at LAS409 where Chris and I deep dive into what exactly is Neon

  • The project leaders have said “If your last dalliance with a KDE desktop was somewhere south of now it may be time to ‘re+assess’, the team say. “Plasma is simple by default, powerful when needed.“ Well as it turns out my last experience with KDE was somewhere south of now so it’s high time we take a looksee.

  • Neon makes sure that KDE’s entire stack is compatible with Ubuntu including updates. Every new release of KDE’s stack will be managed in Neon so if someone wants Ubuntu + KDE then Neon will always be up to date where as Kubuntu has the whole 6 months hold back still.

  • 5.7 to 5.8 is mostly a polish release but a few things stand out for improvements

  • 5.8 offers a very cohesive design, their tag line is “everything is designed to match the KDE experience, from startup to shutdown.” The breeze theme makes sure that everything looks amazing

  • Right off the bat the fact that it’s an 18 month support cycle has me hooked.

  • The nice thing I noticed about Plasma does colour scheme independent of theme. As such you can have any theme with any color scheme. As of the most recent versions of plasma this includes the colours in Icon’s of the default icon theme.

  • I’ve always said there are a few things that make or break a distro for me. Firefox, Thunderbird, Telegram a terminal application and the ability to launch applications with the super key. Up until now we’ve had to rely on the super+space to launch an application. I was pleased to learn that launching Telegram is now as simple as superkey and typing it. Additionally unlike Ubuntu 16.04 with Unity I can launch Telegram immediately after installing it. I don’t need to reboot.

  • Their package manager formally Moo On but now branded as Discover is a great package manager. Muon or Discover is an advanced program with a graphical program that as it’s name obviously implies will allow you to install and remove software. Additionally It will automatically notify you for updates (in the lower right hand corner), but you can use it at anytime to install new package

  • Michael Tunnel our producer who uses this distro as his daily driver and has been invaluable to my review is pretty excited about something that seems like it’s just a minor improvement. The virtual desktop switcher applet now has an option to show only the current screen in multi+screen setups. This seemingly small improvement is great for him because it makes it easier to create the GNOME workflow in Plasma”

  • Last thing to note is the improved global shortcuts. Global shortcuts configuration has been simplified and global shortcuts can now be configured to jump to specific tasks within an application via jump list functionality.

X crash during Fedora update when system has hybrid graphics and systemd-udev is in update

Here’s the short version: especially if your system has hybrid graphics (that is, it has an Intel video adapter and also an AMD or NVIDIA one, and it’s supposed to switch to the most appropriate one for what you’re currently doing — NVIDIA calls this ‘Optimus’), DON’T UPDATE YOUR SYSTEM BY RUNNING DNF FROM THE DESKTOP. (Also if you have multiple graphics adapters that aren’t strictly ‘hybrid graphics’; the bug affects any case with multiple graphics adapters).

David Cameron seeks cooperation of US president over encryption crackdown | UK news

David Cameron is to urge Barack Obama to pressure internet firms such as Twitter and Facebook to do more to cooperate with Britain’s intelligence agencies as they seek to track the online activities of Islamist extremists.

Bitcoin Volatility Puts Miners Under Pressure

“The virtual currency Bitcoin lost 21 per cent of its value yesterday, equating to a total loss this year of 44 per cent. Reports have suggested that this rapid fall is squeezing computer supporting systems and is raising alarm about its future viability. Bitcoin’s value fell to $179.37, 85 per cent lower than its record peak of $1,165 at the end of 2013. In total, nearly $11.3bn has been lost in Bitcoin’s value since its 2013 high. The decline has raised concern for Bitcoin ‘miners’ who support the transactions made in the digital currency, and whose profits become squeezed as its price falls against traditional currencies.”

There’s a Problem In the Silk Road Trial: the Jury Doesn’t Get the Internet – Slashdot

“The trial began this week for Ross Ulbricht, the 30-year-old Texas man accused of being the mastermind behind the dark net drug market, Silk Road. But as the jury began hearing testimony in the case, it was clear the technological knowledge gap would impede the proceedings. Judge Katherine Forrest said right off the bat when the case began that “highly technical” issues must be made clear to the jury. “If I believe things are not understandable to the average juror, we will talk about what might be a reasonable way to proceed at that time,” she said. After the first day of proceedings, Forrest told the prosecution to be more clear with explanations of concepts central to the case, noting she was unhappy with its “mumbo-jumbo” explanation of the anonymizing service Tor. She also requested all readings of chat transcripts include emoticons.”

Errata Security: Obama’s War on Hackers

The new laws make it a felony to intentionally access unauthorized information even if it’s been posted to a public website. The new laws make it a felony to traffic in information like passwords, where “trafficking” includes posting a link.

OpenYourMouth UPDATE

Dev Hoopla:

Apple has lost the functional high ground – Marco.org

Apple’s hardware today is amazing — it has never been better. But the software quality has taken such a nosedive in the last few years that I’m deeply concerned for its future. I’m typing this on a computer whose existence I didn’t even think would be possible yet, but it runs an OS riddled with embarrassing bugs and fundamental regressions. Just a few years ago, we would have relentlessly made fun of Windows users for these same bugs on their inferior OS, but we can’t talk anymore.

Microsoft is building a new browser as part of its Windows 10 push

Spartan is still going to use Microsoft’s Chakra JavaScript engine and Microsoft’s Trident rendering engine (not WebKit), sources say. As Neowin’s Brad Sams reported back in September, the coming browser will look and feel more like Chrome and Firefox and will support extensions.

Sams also reported on December 29 that Microsoft has two different versions of Trident in the works, which also seemingly supports the claim that the company has two different Trident-based browsers.

However, if my sources are right, Spartan is not IE 12. Instead, Spartan is a new, light-weight browser Microsoft is building.

Reinventing Computers And The Internet From Scratch, For The Sake Of Security

  • DARPA funded research is looking at how we might design the Internet if we had to do it over again
  • Many decisions that were made 30 and 40 years ago when UNIX and TCP/IP were designed, may be done differently today
  • The overall project has a number of sub-projects:
    • CRASH – Clean-Slate Design of Resilient, Adaptive, Secure Hosts
    • MRC – Mission-Oriented Resilient Clouds
    • CTSRD – Clean Slate Trustworthy Secure Research and Development (Custard)
  • BERI: Bluespec Extensible RISC Implementation: a open-source hardware-software research and teaching platform: a 64-bit RISC processor implemented in the high-level Bluespec hardware description language (HDL), along with compiler, operating system, and applications
  • CHERI: capability hardware enhanced RISC instructions: hardware-accelerated in-process memory protection and sandboxing model based on a hybrid capability model
  • TESLA: temporally enforced security logic assertions: compiler-generated runtime instrumentation continuously validating temporal security properties
  • SOAAP: security-oriented analysis of application programs: automated program analysis and transformation techniques to help software authors utilize Capsicum and CHERI features
  • The goal is to design newer secure hosts and networks, without having to maintain backwards compatibility with legacy systems, the biggest problem with changing anything on the Internet
  • This is why there are still things like SSLv3 (instead of just TLS 1.2+), why we have not switched to IPv6, and why spam is still such a large problem
  • I for one would definitely like to replaced SMTP, but no one has yet devised a plan for a system that the world could transition to without breaking legacy email while we wait for the rest of the world to upgrade
  • “Corporations are elevating security experts to senior roles and increasing their budgets. At Facebook, the former mantra “move fast and break things” has been replaced. It is now “move slowly and fix things.””
  • For performance reasons, when hardware and programming languages were designed 30 and 40 years ago, it was decided that security would be left up to the programmer
  • The CHERI project aim to change this, by implementing ‘Capabilities’, a sandboxing and security mechanism into the hardware, allowing the hardware rather than the software to enforce protections, preventing unauthorized access or modification of various regions of memory by malicious or compromised applications.
  • CHERI, and the software side of the project, Capsicum, are based on FreeBSD, but are also being ported to Linux, where Google plans to make extensive use of it in its Chrome and Chromium browsers.

Gnome raised money to defend it’s Trademark from Groupon, which has quickly raised the white flag. Is this instant groundswell of support the dawn of a new community attitude towards Gnome?

Firefox Challange Follow Up

Celebrating 10 Years of Firefox | The Mozilla Blog

10 years ago we built Firefox to give you a choice. The Web was a monoculture and the only way in was through the company that controlled your operating system. We believed then, and so did many of you, that the Web deserved an independent alternative. Today hundreds of millions of people trust Firefox because they understand that we’re different; that our independence lets us put you first.

Mozilla Introduces ‘Forget Button’ for Firefox and Dev Edition Browser

With a huge developer user base, Mozilla’s new Firefox Developer Edition browser looks to provide an all-in-one debugging toolset for professi

While it’s loosely based around the previous Firefox Aurora builds, it’s not a straight-forward rebrand — it’s closer to the nightly builds, but built for a developer user base with different needs. It also removes a lot of the safeguards that are vital in the consumer browser but that can frustrate developers.

Chromium:

Chromium is the name given to the open-source project and the browser source code released and maintained by the Chromium Project.[7] It is possible to download the source code and build it manually on many platforms. To create Chrome from Chromium, Google takes this source code and adds:[8]

  • A restriction blocking the installation of extensions from anywhere other than the Chrome Web Store[9]
  • Integrated Flash Player[10] (proprietary license and code)
  • Built-in print preview and print system
  • The Google and Google Chrome names (both trademarked)[11][12][13]
  • An auto-update system called GoogleUpdate (some, such as the Debian or Ubuntu community builds of chromium, rely on the package management system of the OS as an alternative)
  • An opt-in option for users to send Google their usage statistics and crash reports
  • RLZ tracking when Chrome is downloaded as part of marketing promotions and distribution partnerships. This transmits information in encoded form to Google, including both when—and from where—Chrome was downloaded. In June 2010, Google confirmed that the RLZ tracking token is not present in versions of Chrome downloaded from the Google website directly, nor in any version of Chromium. The RLZ source code was also made open source at the same time (previously it was proprietary—and although the source is now open the feature was not migrated to Chromium) so that developers can confirm what it is and how it works.[14]

By default, Chromium only supports Vorbis, Theora and WebM codecs for the HTML5 audio and video tags. Google Chrome supports these as well as the patent-encumbered AAC and MP3 codecs. On 11 January 2011, the Chrome Product manager, Mike Jazayeri, announced that Chrome would no longer support the H.264 video format for its HTML5 player.[15] In October 2013 Cisco announced that it was open-sourcing its H.264 codecs and will cover all fees required.[16] As of December 2013, Chrome still supports H.264. Linux distributions that distribute Chromium may add support for other codecs to their customized versions of Chromium.

Gnome Vs Groupon

Recently Groupon announced a product with the same product name as GNOME. Groupon’s product is a tablet based point of sale “operating system for merchants to run their entire operation.” The GNOME community was shocked that Groupon would use our mark for a product so closely related to the GNOME desktop and technology. It was almost inconceivable to us that Groupon, with over $2.5 billion in annual revenue, a full legal team and a huge engineering staff would not have heard of the GNOME project, found our trademark registration using a casual search, or even found our website, but we nevertheless got in touch with them and asked them to pick another name. Not only did Groupon refuse, but it has now filed even more trademark applications (the full list of applications they filed can be found here, here and here). To use the GNOME name for a proprietary software product that is antithetical to the fundamental ideas of the GNOME community, the free software community and the GNU project is outrageous. Please help us fight this huge company as they try to trade on our goodwill and hard earned reputation.

Crashed drone carried contraband aimed at South Carolina prison | Reuters

A drone being flown in a novel attempt to smuggle phones, marijuana and tobacco into a South Carolina maximum security prison crashed outside its walls, authorities said on Wednesday.

Officials believe it was the first time an unmanned aircraft had been used in an effort to breach prison walls in the state, Givens said. Most cellphones are thrown over walls.

Authorities have arrested one man in the drone incident and are seeking another suspect. Brenton Lee Doyle, 28, appeared in court on Wednesday for a hearing. He faces charges of attempting to introduce contraband into a prison and possession of the drug flunitrazopam, a muscle relaxant known as “roofies.”

Doyle has said he has never seen a drone and that police said nothing about a drone at the time of his arrest, his attorney Wayne Floyd said.

Police Say A Google Tip About Child Abuse Led To Arrest – Business Insider

A Houston man has been arrested after Google sent a tip to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children saying the man had explicit images of a child in his email, according to Houston police.

The man was a registered sex offender, convicted of sexually assaulting a child in 1994, reports Tim Wetzel at KHOU Channel 11 News in Houston.

“He was keeping it inside of his email. I can’t see that information, I can’t see that photo, but Google can,” Detective David Nettles of the Houston Metro Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce told Channel 11.

After Google reportedly tipped off the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the center alerted police, who used the information to get a warrant.

On one hand, most people would certainly applaud the use of technology to scan email in a case like this.

On the other, debate rages about how much privacy users can expect when using Google’s services like email. In a word: none.

A year ago, in a court brief, Google said as much. Then, in April, after a class-action case against Google for email scanning fell apart, Google updated its terms of service to warn people that it was automatically analyzing emails.

Google Said to Plan Separating Photo Service From Google+ – Bloomberg

The move would enable the photo service to stand more
independently and be accessible for consumers who aren’t part of
Google+, potentially spurring more growth, said the people, who
asked not to be identified because the plans aren’t public. The
service, called Google+ Photos, would still work with the social
network’s users and may be rebranded as part of the move, one of
the people said.

The Scourge Of Zero Rating – AVC

Fred Wilson is a New York City-based venture capitalist since 1986, and a blogger. Wilson is the co-founder of Union Square Ventures, with investments in companies such as Twitter, Tumblr, Foursquare, Zynga, Kickstarter, and others.

It seems like every week I read another article about a mobile carrier offering some incredible deal to eat the mobile data costs you rack up using certain apps.

The most recent was the news that Sprint will sell at data plan that “only connects to Facebook and Twitter”.

The pernicious thing about zero rating is that it is marketed as a consumer friendly offering by the mobile carrier — “we are not charging you for data when you are on Spotify”.

But what all of this zero rating activity is setting up is a mobile internet that looks a lot more like cable TV than our wide open Internet. Soon a startup will have to negotiate a zero rating plan before launching because mobile app customers will be trained to only use apps that are zero rated on their network.

I strongly encourage policy makers, policy wonks, internet activists, and anyone who cares about protecting an open internet for all to take a hard look at zero rating. Like all the best scourges, it’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Almost a year ago, we built a new Hackintosh workhorse to help our workflow. It worked OK for a bit, but recently it stopped functioning. After a lot of troubleshooting, we’ve determined that the issue is hardware related.

We’re gonna rip the sucker apart LIVE over this week, and rebuild it. While we do that, we’re going to have a several-part discussion with you about the merits and downfalls of Macs, Hacks, Codecs, video production software, and MORE.

Show Feeds:

Tonight’s Show Notes & Download Below:

“Why Mac?”

Software workflow
– Wirecast is BALLZ under Windows, and there is no Wirecast alternative under Linux
** The BRAINS of our operation, and no other software stands up to it.
– Final Cut Pro
** It’s just better.  Trust us.  But really, that’s only like 20% of the core issue.
** The software includes the codecs that we need to output a high quality video.

Codecs
– We use ProRes — high quality, lossless
** FREE with Final Cut suite
– Alternatives:  Cineform ($500 per computer to license), DNxHD (low speed to encode, not quite as high quality)

QuickTime
A server, in essence.  A piping system that controls the backend support.
The encoder is a client of the server.

Last night right as we were wrapping Jupiter@Nite the jupiterbroadcasting.com server suddenly went off-line. The folks watching the live stream did not even notice, as long as they did not refresh their web browser. But what followed was an all-hands-on-deck effort to get services restored as quickly as possible. But as the hours ticked by, we started to panic – what if the site’s data was lost?

Tonight’s episode will cover our story, and give you tips to protect your self from data loss, security compromises, and human error!
