  • SegWit2x Bitcoin fork called off — “Although we strongly believe in the need for a larger blocksize, there is something we believe is even more important: keeping the community together,” Belshe said. “Unfortunately, it is clear that we have not built sufficient consensus for a clean blocksize upgrade at this time. Continuing on the current path could divide the community and be a setback to Bitcoin’s growth.”
  • Eco friendly Bitcoin competitor announced — Cohen has just started a new company called Chia Network that will launch a cryptocurrency based on proofs of time and storage rather than bitcoin’s electricity-burning proofs of work. Essentially, Chia will harness cheap and abundant unused storage space on hard drives to verify its blockchain.
  • More Linux On Galaxy details — Described as a “Concept Demo”, the vid has a couple of interesting moments.
  • CrossOver enables Windows apps on ChromeOS — CodeWeavers has now announced the availability of their Wine-powered CrossOver software for Chrome OS.
  • Canonical wants volunteers to create art for Ubuntu — A new theme based on Adwaita, the default GNOME GTK theme.
  • Steam Linux client turns 5 — It was on 6 November 2012 when the Steam Linux beta roll-out began and gained more steam as the year came to a close.
  • Munich votes to return to Windows — That means, that Munich will transition to Microsoft Windows 10 in a 2 year phase (till 2020) on 29,000 pcs. The cost for this transition is actually confidential, but is estimated to be more than 100 million euros (more than 116 million US dollars).
  • Apple relicenses CUPS — The CUPS Common UNIX Printing System up to now had been developed under the GPLv2 license while now Apple will be switching it to the Apache 2.0 software license.

Show Notes:

W2 Phishing scams hit a number of companies

  • “Payday lending firm Moneytree is the latest company to alert current and former employees that their tax data — including Social Security numbers, salary and address information — was accidentally handed over directly to scam artists”
  • “Seattle-based Moneytree sent an email to employees on March 4 stating that “one of our team members fell victim to a phishing scam and revealed payroll information to an external source.”
  • “Moneytree was apparently targeted by a scam in which the scammer impersonated me (the company co-founder) and asked for an emailed copy of certain information about the Company’s payroll including Team Member names, home addresses, social security numbers, birthdates and W2 information,” Moneytree co-founder Dennis Bassford wrote to employees.”
  • Why that would even be a reasonable request, I don’t know
  • “Unfortunately, this request was not recognized as a scam, and the information about current and former Team Members who worked in the US at Moneytree in 2015 or were hired in early 2016 was disclosed. The good news is that our servers and security systems were not breached, and our millions of customer records were not affected. The bad news is that our Team Members’ information has been compromised.”
  • Moneytree joins a growing list of companies disclosing to employees that they were duped by W2 phishing scams, which this author first warned about in mid-February. Earlier this month, data storage giant Seagate acknowledged that a similar phishing scam had compromised the tax and personal data on thousands of current and past employees.
  • “On March 1, Seagate Technology learned that the 2015 W-2 tax form information for current and former U.S.-based employees was sent to an unauthorized third party in response to the phishing email scam. The information was sent by an employee who believed the phishing email was a legitimate internal company request.”
  • “W2 information is highly prized by fraudsters involved in tax refund fraud, a multi-billion dollar problem in which thieves claim a large refund in the victim’s name, and ask for the funds to be electronically deposited into an account the crooks control.”
  • “For better or worse, most companies that have notified employees about a W2 phish this year are offering employees the predictable free credit monitoring, which is of course useless to prevent tax fraud and many other types of identity theft. But in a refreshing departure from that tired playbook, Moneytree says it will be giving employees an extra $50 in their next paycheck to cover the initial cost of placing a credit freeze (for more information on the different between credit monitoring and a freeze and why a freeze might be a better idea, check out Credit Monitoring vs. Freeze and How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Embrace the Security Freeze).”
  • ““When something like this happens, the right thing to do is to disclose what you know as soon as possible, take care of the people affected, and learn from what went wrong. To make good on that last point, we will be ramping up our information security efforts company-wide, because we never want to have to write an email like this to you again”.”

New exploit developed for Android Stagefright

  • “Security researchers have successfully exploited the Android-based Stagefright bug and remotely hacked a phone, which may leave millions devices vulnerable to attack.”
  • “Israeli software research company NorthBit claimed it had “properly” exploited the Android bug that was originally described as the “worst ever discovered”.”
  • “The exploitation, called Metaphor, is detailed in a research paper (PDF) from NorthBit and also a video showing the exploit being run on a Nexus 5. NorthBit said it had also successfully tested the exploit on a LG G3, HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S5.”
  • “The Stagefright vulnerability was first highlighted by security firm Zimperium in July 2015. The hack was said to be able to execute remote code on Android devices and could possibly affect up to 95 percent of Android devices.”
  • “A second critical vulnerability exploited issues in .mp3 and .mp4 files, which when opened were claimed to be able to remotely execute malicious code, was dubbed Stagefright 2.0 in October.”
  • The flaws were originally thought to not be easily exploitable, but this new research provides a simple remote exploit case
  • “The researchers from NorthBit say they have been able to create an exploit that can be used against Stagefright on Android 2.2, 4.0, 5.0 and 5.1. Other versions are not affected.”
  • Android 5.0 and above are protected by ASLR, however “Dabah claims the exploit “depicts a way to bypass” address space layout randomisation (ASLR)”
  • “”We managed to exploit it to make it work in the wild,” Dabah said. The research paper reads: “Breaking ASLR requires some information about the device, as different devices use slightly different configurations which may change some offsets or predictable addresses locations.”
  • “”I would be surprised if multiple professional hacking groups do not have working Stagefright exploits by now. Many devices out there are still vulnerable, so Zimperium has not published the second exploit in order to protect the ecosystem”.”
  • Researcher PDF
  • I am glad my phone runs Android 6.0.1 with the March 2016 Security Updates applied

PIN analysis

  • “There are 10,000 possible combinations that the digits 0-9 can be arranged to form a 4-digit pin code. Out of these ten thousand codes, which is the least commonly used?”
  • “People are notoriously bad at generating random passwords. I hope this article will scare you into being a little more careful in how you select your next PIN number. Are you curious about what the least commonly used PIN number might be?”
  • “I was able to find almost 3.4 million four digit passwords. Every single one of the of the 10,000 combinations of digits from 0000 through to 9999 were represented in the dataset”
  • “A staggering 26.83% of all passwords could be guessed by attempting the top 20 combinations”
  • “The first “puzzling” password I encountered was 2580 in position #22. What is the significance of these digits? Why should so many people select this code to make it appear so high up the list?”
  • This turns out to be straight down the middle of a telephone style number pad. Not the same as on on a computer, but most ABMs use the telephone style
  • “Another fascinating piece of trivia is that people seem to prefer even numbers over odd, and codes like 2468 occur higher than a odd number equivalent, such as 1357”
  • “Statistically, one third of all codes can be guessed by trying just 61 distinct combinations! The 50% cumulative chance threshold is passed at just 426 codes (far less than the 5,000 that a random uniformly distribution would predict)”
  • The most unpopular pin is: 8068
  • Warning Now that we’ve learned that, historically, 8068 is (was?) the least commonly used password 4-digit PIN, please don’t go out and change yours to this! Hackers can read too! They will also be promoting 8068 up their attempt trees in order to catch people who read this (or similar) articles.”
  • “Many of the high frequency PIN numbers can be interpreted as years, e.g. 1967 1956 1937 … It appears that many people use a year of birth (or possibly an anniversary) as their PIN. This will certainly help them remember their code, but it greatly increases its predictability”
  • Pins that start with 19 dominate the top 10%, and all appear within the top 20%
  • The heatmap also shows that people tend to use Birthdays a lot as well (MMDD)

Linux Land in 2016:

  • Chris and Noah surprise each other with their top 7 Linux predictions for 2016.

Patron Predictions

Martin B:

1) LXQt becomes stable and replaces LXDE. Chris becomes hyped.
2) XFCE becomes irrelevant because of the popularity of MATE and developpers will openly leave the sinking ship.
3) Fedora 25 will have Wayland by default. Not Fedora 24. This will cause a lot of issues. Which is good for the development.
4) KDE Plasma 5 will keep improving, but little issues will keep existing that prevent Chris from recommending it.
5) openSUSE Leap 42.2 will not release in 2016, but is postponed to January 2017
6) Ubuntu will launch Unity 8 for desktop but will also keep their phone strategy alive. Mir will not be replaced by Wayland.
7) The hype for Docker will be lowered somewhat, but actual usage in the enterprise will increase. The Open Container Initiative will cease to exist.
8) AMD will go open source as a way to prevent bankruptcy. This will be the start of better Linux compatibility. But their revenues will not improve.

Lindsay S:

1) Steam Linux usage moves up to 5% after wallowing for quite some time under 1% This will be due primarily to Steam Machine sales and some users realising that Linux is a viable gaming platform. Although this will be a large percentage increase, many including valve will be very disappointed with this level of usage but the steamroller will have just started.
2)Ubuntu will dominate the distro market but will continue to slip in usage and user mindshare. Mint based on the Ubuntu LTS will be a big hit and recommended for most new users. Fedora and OpenSUSE will continue to increase in market share.
3) KDE 5.x will continue to stabilise and add new features to fix issues, it will start to bring back some of the mindshare it lost in 2014. 5.7 will be released and get lots of praise due to features, stability and the fact that you have an easy choice of three different start menus.
4) Wayland will be released for some distributions such as Fedora but will still be seen as experimental and will have problems. There will still be options to use the older X versions. Ubuntu will announce that they are giving up on Mir development and throwing their weight and support behind Wayland, pushing for extensions that will support what they wanted to do with Mir (pigs might fly on this one as well)
5) Libre Office will continue on it’s rise to popularity and use. Several large governments and educational institutions will announce that they are moving to it.
6) Citrix Xenserver will get accolades for a new release and will continue to be a great option for virtualisation. Many other Linux based virtualisation solutions such as oVirt will be in the news for their releases. People will be looking more and more at free and open source virtualisation solutions rather than the commercial alternatives from Vmware and Microsoft.
7) Google will try to address the current big issue with Android security with regard to updates across phone manufactures. They will announce a modular solution that allows updates to the OS via the play store but will also allow carriers to keep their customisations for different types of phones.

DHCPPing

https://bentis.calepin.co/handy-tools-for-debugging-dhcp-on-linux.html

dhcping sends a DHCPREQUEST packet, waits for a reply and prints information indicating success or failure and exits with 0 or 1 as appropriate. Use the -v or -V flags for more verbose ouput. The options I most frequently use are -h, the client hardware address, -s the target dhcp server address and -c for the address you’re expecting the reply to be returned to (I don’t know why this is necessary but I find I get a DHCPNACK reply if not).
A typical invocation would therefore be:
sudo dhcping -h 00:12:3f:20:11:49 -s 10.1.200.200 -c 10.1.200.1

Ian Murdock, father of Debian, dead at 42

Ian Murdock, founder of the Debian GNU/Linux distribution project, has died at the age of 42. His death, announced in a blog post by Docker CEO Ben Golub, came after an apparent encounter with police and a statement posted on Murdock’s Twitter feed that he was going to commit suicide, though no cause of his death has been given.

Murdock’s work combined an insistence on excellence with a public commitment to open, ethical software development

Best Linux Games of Fall (so far)

System76

Brought to you by: System76

Recent improvements to Steam, combined with some great new releases of games. We’ll feature some of the best games of 2014. Something we like to do a couple weeks before we head out to a LinuxFest, it gives us a great chance to highlight how much fun Linux can be to attendees of the Fest looking to learn more about Linux gaming.

Getting more out of Steam

Steam Curators

Follow one or more of these curators to see their recommendations featured on your Steam home page.

Steam Music

Point Steam to the MP3s on your computer, then browse your collection of albums and artists. You’ll also find your Steam Soundtracks DLC in your Steam Music library when the associated base game is installed. Listen to albums, queue up mixes, and create playlists you love, right in your Steam library. Best of all, it’s all available right within the Steam Overlay, so you can control playback without leaving your game.

Steam Groups

Steam now allows streaming from Linux!

Tonight I opened up Steam on my laptop and found all my games installed on my Mint desktop available to be streamed. I then fired up Borderlands 2 and happily played on my GPU deprived laptop! So, it appears they finally enabled streaming from a Linux server!

The Best Games

Nightmares from the Deep: The Cursed Heart on Steam

Would you like to enter a thrilling Pirates world where danger lurks in every corner? You are a museum owner pursuing an undead pirate who kidnapped your daughter. You quickly realize that the villain is entangled in a tragic, centuries-old love story, and wants to resurrect his mistress with the girl’s life force.

J.U.L.I.A.: Among the Stars on Steam

The story centers on Rachel Manners, a 35 year old astrobiologist. She is a member of an elite group of scientists, chosen to embark on one of the most critical missions ever conceived on Earth.

Super Win the Game on Steam

Throw on your nostalgia goggles and travel back in time with Super Win the Game, a retro-core explosion of exploration and platforming action!!

  • 21MB install
Velocibox on Steam

Velocibox is a twitch-heavy action game crafted for the hardcore audience.

Borderlands 2 on Steam

Borderlands 2 is an action role-playing first-person shooter video game, developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K Games on September 18, 2012. It is the second game in the Borderlands series and the sequel to 2009’s Borderlands.

As with the first game, Borderlands 2 allows players to complete a campaign consisting of central quests and optional side-missions as one of four treasure seekers, “Vault Hunters”, on the planet Pandora. Key gameplay features from the original game, such as online collaborative campaign gameplay; randomly generated loot, such as weapons and shields; and character-building elements commonly found in role-playing video games are in Borderlands 2.

Firejail

Firejail is a SUID security sandbox program that reduces the risk of security breaches by restricting the running environment of untrusted applications using Linux namespaces. It allows a process and all its descendants to have their own private view of the globally shared kernel resources, such as the network stack, process table, mount table.

Firejail can sandbox any type of processes: servers, graphical applications, and even user login sessions. Written in C with virtually no dependencies, it should work on any Linux computer with a 3.x kernel version. Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, OpenSUSE, and Fedora packages are provided. An Arch Linux package is maintained in AUR.

Fierjail configures a basic sandbox, runs the program and exits. The sandbox consists of a mount namespace and a new process namespace. In the mount namespace, the main system directories are mounted read-only.

Weekly Spotlight

logstalgia – website access log visualization

Logstalgia is a website traffic visualization that replays or streams web-server access logs as a pong-like battle between the web server and an never ending torrent of requests.

Requests appear as colored balls (the same color as the host) which travel across the screen to arrive at the requested location. Successful requests are hit by the paddle while unsuccessful ones (eg 404 – File Not Found) are missed and pass through.

The paths of requests are summarized within the available space by identifying common path prefixes. Related paths are grouped together under headings. For instance, by default paths ending in png, gif or jpg are grouped under the heading Images. Paths that don’t match any of the specified groups are lumped together under a Miscellaneous section.

Ubuntu GNOME Devs Encouraged by Ubuntu Team to Add Latest GNOME in Future Versions

“I think it’s too late to revisit such a decision for 14.10 without significant downside for the quality of Ubuntu GNOME; but for 15.04, I recommend that you explicitly consider at the beginning of the release cycle whether you would like to release with the latest version of GNOME,” also notes the Ubuntu developer.

CUPS Turn 15 Years Old, CUPS 2.0 Released

CUPS 2.0 has greater security around its scheduler, various OS X specific improvements, systemd support, support for TLS certificate validation and policy enforcement, updates to all Linux man pages, dropped OpenSSL in favor of GNU TLS, dropped support for AIX / HP-UX / OSF/1 architectures, and various other changes.

GOL Survey Results: September | GamingOnLinux

Debian based – 58.98% (394)
Slackware based – 1.20% (8)
Red Hat based – 3.59% (24)
Suse based – 3.89% (26)
Arch Based – 25.45% (170)
Other (please specify) – 6.89% (46)

It is perhaps no surprise given most developers test on and officially support only Ubuntu that most use a Debian-based distro, however, Arch still has a pretty strong showing.
