CIA Weapons now flooding into Syria since Russian support began.

The American-made TOW antitank missiles began arriving in the region in 2013, through a covert program run by the United States, Saudi Arabia and other allies to help certain C.I.A.-vetted insurgent groups battle the Syrian government.
The weapons are delivered to the field by American allies, but the United States approves their destination. That suggests that the newly steady battlefield supply has at least tacit American approval, now that Russian air power is backing President Bashar al-Assad.
“By bombing us, Russia is bombing the 13 ‘Friends of Syria’ countries,” he said, referring to the group of the United States and its allies that called for the ouster of Mr. Assad after his crackdown on political protests in 2011.

The C.I.A. program that delivered the TOWs (an acronym for tube-launched, optically tracked, wire-guided missiles) is separate from — and significantly larger than — the failed $500 million Pentagon program that was canceled last week after it trained only a handful of fighters. That was unsuccessful largely because few recruits would agree to its goal of fighting only the militant Islamic State and not Mr. Assad.

Rebel commanders scoffed when asked about reports of the delivery of 500 TOWs from Saudi Arabia, saying it was an insignificant number compared with what is available. Saudi Arabia in 2013 ordered more than 13,000 of them. Given that American weapons contracts require disclosure of the “end user,” insurgents said they were being delivered with Washington’s approval.

Something BIG is about to begin

FU:

Debian sees a mini-exodus around systemd discussions

This morning, I resigned as a member of the systemd maintainer team.
I then proceeded to leave the relevant IRC channels and announced this
on twitter. The responses I’ve gotten have been almost all been
heartwarming. People have generally been offering hugs, saying thanks
for the work put into systemd in Debian and so on. I’ve greatly
appreciated those (and I’ve been getting those before I resigned too,
so this isn’t just a response to that). I feel bad about leaving the
rest of the team, they’re a great bunch: competent, caring, funny,
wonderful people. On the other hand, at some point I had to draw a
line and say “no further”.

I hereby resign from the systemd maintainer team in Debian. Please
remove me from Uploaders on the next upload. You’ve been an awesome
team to work with, but the load of the continued attacks is just
becoming too much.

What are the draw backs of Linux?

Hey there,

I’ve been considering more and more moving over to linux. Now, I use my computer a lot to work and unfortunately the business world is ridden with Windows. I’m currently on a Mac and the good thing with that has been that there’s Office for OS X. I don’t like office but it just makes life so much easier to run it as everyone else does and I’ve had my fare share of issues trying to send documents not created natively in office where layouts differ etc.
But more importantly besides the small thing that is MS office, what other drawbacks should I take into consideration.
I’m fully aware that Linux is awesome software, but I’m asking the question from the perspective of someone using ones computer mainly to work and casual surfing. Casual stuff I know won’t be a problem, just worried about the draw backs in a work environment.

Runs Linux from the people:

  • Send in a pic/video of your runs Linux.
  • Please upload videos to YouTube and submit a link via email or the subreddit.

Tailoring OpenBSD for an old, strange computer

  • The author of this article had an OmniBook 800CT, which comes with a pop-out mouse, black and white display, 32MB of RAM and a 133MHz CPU
  • Obviously he had to install some kind of BSD on it!
  • This post goes through all his efforts of trimming down OpenBSD to work on such a limited device
  • He goes through the trial and error of \”compile, break it, rebuild, try again\”
  • After cutting a lot out from the kernel, saving a precious megabyte here and there, he eventually gets it working

pkgsrcCon and BSDCan

  • pkgsrccon is \”a technical conference for people working on the NetBSD Packages Collection, focusing on existing technologies, research projects, and works-in-progress in pkgsrc infrastructure\”
  • This year it will be on June 21st and 22nd
  • The schedule is still being worked out, so if you want to give a talk, submit it
  • BSDCan\’s schedule was also announced
  • We\’ll be having presentations about ARM on NetBSD and FreeBSD, PF on OpenBSD, Capsicum and casperd, ASLR in FreeBSD, more about migrating from Linux to BSD, FreeNAS stuff and much more
  • Kris\’ presentation was accepted!
  • Tons of topics, look forward to the recorded versions of all of them hopefully!

Two factor auth with pushover

  • A new write-up from our friend Ted Unangst
  • Pushover is \”a web hook to smartphone push notification gateway\” – you sent a POST to a web server and it sends a code to your phone
  • His post goes through the steps of editing your login.conf and setting it all up to work
  • Now you can get a two factor authenticated login for ssh!

The status of GNOME 3 on BSD

  • It\’s no secret that the GNOME team is a Linux-obsessed bunch, almost to the point of being hostile towards other operating systems
  • OpenBSD keeps their GNOME 3 ports up to date very well, and Antoine Jacoutot writes about his work on that and how easy it is to use
  • This post goes through the process of how simple it is to get GNOME 3 set up on OpenBSD and even includes a screencast
  • A few recent posts from some GNOME developers show that they\’re finally working with the BSD guys to improve portability
  • The FreeBSD and OpenBSD teams are working together to bring the latest GNOME to all of us – it\’s a beautiful thing
  • This goes right along with our interview today!

FreeBSD foundation\’s 2013 fundraising results

  • The FreeBSD foundation finally counted all the money they made in 2013
  • $768,562 from 1659 donors
  • Nice little blog post from the team with a giant beastie picture
  • \”We have already started our 2014 fundraising efforts. As of the end of January we are just under $40,000. Our goal is to raise $1,000,000. We are currently finalizing our 2014 budget. We plan to publish both our 2013 financial report and our 2014 budget soon.\”
  • A special thanks to all the BSD Now listeners that contributed, the foundation was really glad that we sent some people their way (and they mentioned us on Facebook)

OpenSSH 6.5 released

  • We mentioned the CFT last week, and it\’s finally here!
  • New key exchange using elliptic-curve Diffie Hellman in Daniel Bernstein\’s Curve25519 (now the default when both clients support it)
  • Ed25519 public keys are now available for host keys and user keys, considered more secure than DSA and ECDSA
  • Funny side effect: if you ONLY enable ed25519 host keys, all the compromised Linux boxes can\’t even attempt to login
  • New bcrypt private key type, 500,000,000 times harder to brute force
  • Chacha20-poly1305 transport cipher that builds an encrypted and authenticated stream in one

  • In 2000, MWL wrote an essay for linux.com about why he uses the BSD license: \”It’s actually stood up fairly well to the test of time, but it’s fourteen years old now.\”
  • This is basically an updated version about why he uses the BSD license, in response to recent idiocy from Richard Stallman
  • Very nice post that gives some history about Berkeley, the basics of the BSD-style licenses and their contrast to the GNU GPL
  • Check out the full post if you\’re one of those people that gets into license arguments
  • The takeaway is \”BSD is about making the world a better place. For everyone.\”

NSA is CRAZY

Sanders, in a letter dated 3 January, defined “spying” as “gathering metadata on calls made from official or personal phones, content from websites visited or emails sent, or collecting any other data from a third party not made available to the general public in the regular course of business”.

The NSA’s director, Gen. Keith Alexander, told the advisory panel, the Review Group on Intelligence and Communications Technologies, that the “NSA itself has seriously considered moving to a model in which the data are held by the private sector.” But, according to a review group member, Alexander told the group that “no one else wanted it — especially not the phone companies.” Alexander, the member said, “described it as a ‘bit of a hot potato.’ ”

As expected, on Thursday the ACLU filed notice that it will appeal Pauley’s decision before the second circuit court of appeals. The civil liberties group said in a statement that it anticipates making its case before the appellate court in the spring.

“The government has a legitimate interest in tracking the associations of suspected terrorists, but tracking those associations does not require the government to subject every citizen to permanent surveillance,” deputy ACLU legal director Jameel Jaffer said in the statement.

Devil Weed Takes Root in America

Owners of the 37 new dispensaries around the state reported first week retail sales to The Huffington Post that, when added together, were roughly $5 million.

Prices also were boosted by the state’s 25 percent tax on retail purchases, including a 15 percent excise tax and a 10 percent sales tax. Voters approved the levy in November. Local taxes can add more to what customers pay.

Six days after sales became legal, stores are rationing how much they sell, and a company that makes cannabis-infused sparkling fruit drinks, chocolates, mints and more ran out of supplies in just three days, Denver’s local ABC affiliate reported. Among retailers, Lodo Wellness Center in downtown Denver, for example, is limiting customers to an eighth of an ounce, or one-eighth of what they can legally buy, it said.

The ArcView Group, which matches marijuana entrepreneurs and investors, has estimated the legalized pot market in the U.S. could reach $10.2 billion over the next five years, from $1.44 billion last year, as other states join Colorado and Washington in legalizing recreational marijuana use.

The Money Problem

Still, the federal prohibition means banks won’t accept marijuana businesses for traditional bank accounts, and retailers said they can’t take advantage of traditional business tax writeoffs.

Financial institutions don’t want to run afoul of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, which can charge fines of up to $500,000 per transaction for working with companies who sell illegal products. Though Colorado and Washington have been cleared for adult recreational use sales, and 21 states (plus the District of Columbia) have legalized pot for medicinal use, marijuana remains illegal under the federal Controlled Substances Act. Even a state-owned bank, which one Washington lawmaker has proposed, would have to abide by federal banking laws. The discrepancy between state and federal law puts financial institutions at risk of money laundering prosecution, and they want precise assurances before assuming that risk. “They want the safe harbor to be so abundantly clear,” said Rep. Heck.

The irony here is rich. A year ago, British-based bank HSBC was fined $1.9 billion for actual money laundering for Mexican drug cartels, suspected of killing thousands of innocent civilians. HSBC had no problem doing very profitable business with the illegal drug trade, and they basically got away with it, with no criminal prosecution and a paltry fine. But in Washington and Colorado, you have legal businesses operating within state law, and no bank will touch them. “I guess they don’t think we’re big enough dollar-wise for them to risk it,” said Alex Cooley of Solstice. “But it’s crazy, in Washington, Bank of America is the state bank. They’ll take our tax revenue from the state but they won’t take our money.”

The Legalization Trend

Star Wars Prequels:

In the new trilogy, Anakin Skywalker portrays a damning indictment of technology’s modern dehumanization of mankind through Hayden Christensen’s lifeless, almost inhuman performance. There is a river of tragedy in every robotic line he utters, a horrific monotonal indication of his cyborgal fate.

Matrix Trilogy:

The rest of the casting leaves much to be desired, with the only bright spot being Monica Bellucci in both sequels. Her performances in the two films are a pair of ripe, full, well-rounded portrayals of firm, voluptuous womanhood that will go down as as two of the breast roles in recent mammary.

“Back to the Future” is the WORST TRILOGY EVAR

1) Marty’s parents give birth to a guy that looks just like a dude they went to high school with.

2) Calvin Klein got famous off Marty’s undies, and looks nothing like him!
3) Biff became a psuedo-servant, and nobody mentions his attempted rape!?

4) Marty has to find out first-hand that his mother is a danger-slut.

5) Marty steals the invention of Rock & Roll from black people!

6) Zemeckis also has Marty invent the Civil Rights movement (Mayor Goldie Wilson!)
