Deepin Software Center, aka DSC, is one of the most talked about applications of Linux Deepin. Installing new applications is just a one-click operation. DSC supports parallel downloading, resuming downloads, update notification and cache cleaning. DSC also comes with colorful skins that can be swapped as your mood changes.

Deepin Desktop Environment

Deepin Desktop Environment Screenshot

Similar to other projects Deepin went ahead and developed their own Shell which was simply called Deepin Desktop Environment. DDE is based on HTML5 and WebKit and uses a mix of QML and Go Language for different components. Core components of DDE include the desktop itself, the brand new launcher, bottom Dock, and the control center.

Release Cycle

The release cycle of deepin new versions has been changed from twice a year (in June and in December) to four times a year, including two new versions and two amended versions, for example, Deepin 2014.1 is the amended version of Deepin 2014.

Moving the Steam folder on Linux is causing users’ entire file systems to be deleted

Steam Logo

Users of Steam on GNU/Linux are reporting that attempting to move the Steam folder – something that the GNU/Linux Steam installer doesn’t allow you to set at the time of installation – is leading to everything able to be deleted being deleted recursively from root. First entered as a bug report by the Github user keyvin, he explained how he tried to move the directory somewhere else and symlink it to the original location. In almost every use case under the Sun, this usually works without too many problems. Unfortunately for keyvin, however, a bug in Steam proceeded to delete everything it was able to on his computer – even the content on his 3TB external storage.

‘Goodbye Photoshop’ and ‘Hello Krita’ at University Paris 8

The ATI (Art and Technology of Image) department at University Paris 8 is switching to Krita this year. This department has the double aim to train students both to use graphic software (2D,3D,VFX and Compositing) and to code their own (Python, C#, C++). Until recently the classes used only Adobe Photoshop, but because of inadequate support from the company the department decided to
replace that.

The 4 Best New Linux Distributions to Watch in 2015 | Linux.com

By Jack Wallen

Every year new Linux distributions pop up and promise something new and game changing. I believe this time around, the claims certainly have a chance of changing the way Linux is seen by a number of user groups. Whether you’re an average user, a gamer, a power user, or some hybrid user in need of a desktop to perfectly suit your needs, I believe 2015 will bring to light some projects that will be right up your alley.

Main Linux problems on the desktop, 2015 edition

In this regularly updated article, which is without doubt the most comprehensive list of Linux distributions’ problems on the entire Internet, we only discuss their main problems and deficiencies (which may be the reason why some people say Linux distros are not ready for the desktop) while everyone should keep in mind that there are areas where Linux has excelled other OSes: excellent package management, multiple platforms and architectures support out of the box, usually excellent stability, no widely circulating viruses or malware, complete system reinstallation is almost never required, besides Linux is extremely customizable, easily scripted and it’s free as a beer.

I want to make one thing crystal clear – Windows, in some regards, is even worse than Linux and it’s definitely not ready for the desktop either. Off the top of my head I want to name the following quite devastating issues with Windows:

  • devastating Windows rot
  • no enforced file system and registry hierarchy (I have yet to find a single serious application which can uninstall itself cleanly and fully)
  • svchost.exe
  • no true safe mode
  • no clean state
  • the user as a system administrator (thus viruses/malware – most users don’t and won’t understand UAC warnings)
  • no good packaging mechanism (MSI is a fragile abomination)
  • no system wide update mechanism (which includes third party software)
  • Windows is extremely difficult to debug
  • Windows boot problems are often fatal and unsolvable unless you reinstall from scratch
  • Windows is hardware dependent (especially when running from UEFI)
  • Windows updates are unreliable and they also waste disk space
  • there’s no way to cleanly upgrade your system (there will be thousands of leftovers), etc.

Your Own Linux Chat Server

System76

Brought to you by: System76

Prosody is a modern flexible communications server for Jabber/XMPP written in Lua. It aims to be easy to set up and configure, and light on resources.

In the midst of the major press blitz surrounding its annual I/O Conference, Google dropped some unfortunate news about its instant messaging plans. In several places around the web, the company is replacing the existing “Talk” platform with a new one called “Hangouts” that sharply diminishes support for the open messaging protocol known as XMPP (or sometimes informally Jabber), and also removes the option to disable the archiving of all chat communications. These changes represent a switch from open protocols to proprietary ones, and a clear step backward for many users.

I setup a Raspberry Pi Model B as an XMPP server running MUC.

Full Featured XMPP Client:

Super Easy LAN Chat:

Android

Source code of Xabber is available at https://github.com/redsolution/xabber-android under GNU GPLv3 license.

A free, secure and complete XMPP Server (also called a Jabber Server). The app supports SSL/TLS, multiple users and can be set to automatically start the server when your device is connected to a specific WIFI network!
