Needs of the Few

  • Overall, a great story that feels like something you would see in a Star Trek episode, some great new maps that add to this mission’s environment, making it feel different. The only thing that could use improvement is gameplay, and to keep this a diplomatic mission, the only real thing the author could add is a puzzle, and less repeating of talking to tons of NPC’s. If you are mainly looking for story in your mission experience, this is a great one to check out.

New Segment: Talk Trek

Balance of Terror

  • 5:00 A lot of interesting setup. Showing the territory map, Spock giving the 411 and the shots of the crew listening in.
  • 14:00 Kirk takes input, even hostile input at that, and adjust his orders.
The Defector
  • Starts has a holodeck playtime between data and picard.
  • Powerful first on screen moment for the Romulan escape, I remember it feeling like a big deal back in the day.
  • One of my favorite ship flybys at 8:47 goes great with the “captain’s log”.
  • Asking data to keep a record of events is really clever.
  • At the 20 minute mark, the return back to the opening scene. A nice touch.
  • At the 22 minute mark, it’s a great Data learning to be human chat. Season 3 was great at this.
  • One worlds butcher, is another worlds hero. So true.
  • At the 38:40 One of the great, get us outta here moments, and the Romulans uncloak.
  • 42:26 Klinks decloak and screw the Romulans plan up. Loves it.
James Sloyan – Memory Alpha, the Star Trek Wiki
Face of the Enemy
  • The Tal Shiar appears to be quite the buracratic badass.
  • The most time we have ever spent on a Romulan ship?
  • As noted in the Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion, this episode marked the debut of Worf’s ponytail. He would retain this look for the rest of the series, throughout his tenure on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and all four Next Generation films. Hairstylist Joy Zapata and Michael Dorn had both lobbied for the change for some time. Zapata explained, “[Worf’s hair] used to remind me of a Klingon that had gone to the beauty salon; it looked like Donna Reed!”.

NEWS:

Community Event: KDF Awareness Week
A week-long push for higher active population on the KDF side of the fence.
Tutors available in zone chat. Missions, Ship discussions, etc etc.
Group leaders/members for whatever you need ran. (maybe not STFs…)

KDF auto-decloak has been fixed!

Salami Inferno:

“The fix for this issue is not as simple as it sounds. It involves touching every single map in the game, which is a ridiculously high number.

That being said, we did it and the fix will be in the next tribble push.”

The new Diplomatic Immunity
(Since DSEs no longer pull you in)
Tentatively, it allows Feds to enter the KDF home sector
This opens up new assignments in the Doff system, since it’s location-based
KDF will have a similar ability available. No word on how you earn it (no Diplomacy).

Part 2: DTNE Dev Diary
CapnLogan pops in to answer a few questions…

Season 4 Update:

  • Players can now create a private PvE queue lobby
  • The borg are adapting to players too infrequently, resistance will be futile again very soon.

TWEET LEAKS:
CrypticEQAH: “Quick look at the new borg adaptation visual FX. Hope you brought a remodulator!” https://yfrog.com/z/kh1alyj
Gozer: “Updated Infected Boss Room.. New Shields animate around the generator and consoles..” https://twitpic.com/5gct8e
Gozer: “New “Normal” Mode Infected Boss Room… Walkways added for the Jumping “impaired” :).. No walkways however on Elite”  https://twitpic.com/5f94tz/full

KHITOMER ACCORD:

Don’t expect to be able to destroy the place JUST because you read a guide, or get tips. You need good gear, good specs, knowledgable players, and PRACTICE. But we’ll give you what help we can!

I’ve heard of skilled teams completing this entire mission in <1.5 hours, but the standard for even experienced groups seems to be between 2 and 3 hours, depending on a lot of various factors. To be safe, allot yourself 4 solid hours of gameplay, or be prepared to have an assigned break at some point, agreed-upon by your entire team.

Sanctuary of Wanderhome Guides: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlaHzeZbZA4

Space – Two Gates
Both will activate as soon as you kill the last of the baddies that start at the center.
– Kill all except the Tac Cube, and draw it toward one of the two gates.
– Kill the Tac Cube on top of one of the gates, to get a nice boost to its damage from the cube’s warp core explosion.

  • After the two gates are active, you will need to destroy BOTH simultaneously, while also fending off waves of drones and spheres.
    • If you let 6 probes reach the central structure, you FAIL and the universe implodes.
  • You must have sufficient DPS to split your team into two groups, and one of those groups must be capable of BOTH clearing the spawns AND killing the gate.
    • The other half of the team only has to be able to kill the spawns, and the gate is an added bonus.
    • Once you destroy one gate, you can work together on the other if necessary.
    • Once one gate drops, Cubes are added to the spawns of the remaining gate.
      • If you can manage it, keep a Cube alive until the next wave and use its Warp Core as a weapon against gate/spawns.
  • Gravity Well, Tractor Beam Mines, Tractor Beam Repulsors, Photonic Shockwave (hold Probes in place, or push AWAY from central gate).
  • Tricobalt Mines!

3 minutes between waves of Borg, each time with 15 seconds of vulnerability.

Ground – Phase 1 (clearing)
Usual tactics:
Observe the kill order (Nodes first)
– Some nodes are very cleverly hidden on this map. A few even require diversionary tactics to reach (pulling the borg team THEN sending in a Sniper to eliminate the Node).
Expose/Exploit
– Might as well practice now, this will become even more crucial when the Borg start adapting more.

Borg are not in place, they beam in. Don’t send scouts, advance together and cautiously.
Best if you have at least one team member that knows the spawns/nodes.

Ground – Phase 2 (forcefield room, split team)

  • Endurance Team stays in the room with 6 nodes, and deactivates the shields.
    • The Borg that will spawn in this chamber are relatively wimpy.
    • Each shield node corresponds to a node in the main room you came from.
  • DPS Team stays in the main chamber and targets the nodes, as the shields drop (by other team)
    • You only have 3-4 seconds to drop the node before the shield reactivates, THEN you have to clear out the Borg that spawned in. THIS IS A DPS RACE.

After deactivating the 6th Node, you’ll be assaulted by dozens and dozens of borgs, including some Elite Tacticals that seem especially beefy. This is an endurance test, not a DPS race. STAY ALIVE.

Destroy the two “IMR Chambers” (top floor, and bottom floor)
Before destroying them, you can step inside to earn your Borg Sci Boff and an Accolade.
Step in SLOWLY, and a groupmate can rez you.

BOSS ROOM!
Poke in and kill the nodes first, then clear his buddies, then DPS him down.
Seal off the entry with Force Domes / Cover Shields, to prevent flanking.
He’s resilient, but doesn’t hit any harder than an Elite Tactical.

Space – Boss Battle
Step 1 – beat up Scimmy
Step 2 – destroy massive wave of Probes
Step 3 – CLICK FOLLOW

  • You may have to find a way to drop Red Alert, in order to be able to follow. My team managed this by using a Photonic Fleet to destroy the last few probes, while we retreated.
  • If you do not CLICK FOLLOW, you may be left behind and unable to participate in the next encounter. It’s not an actual map transfer, and there’s an invisible wall blocking you from manually travelling to the next area.

Be prepared for a lengthy battle against the final Space Boss.

  • Her CLOAK cannot be counter-acted, so just suck it up.
  • Keep your Evasive Maneuvers active to avoid the Thalaron Cannon, if you can.
    • A decent stack of resist buff can also turn it into a Thalaron Tickler (Hazard Emitters, Aux to SIF, Brace for Impact)
      • Extend Shields / Emergency to Shields
  • Good idea to have a skilled Gravity Well, can suck in groups of Probes to cause chain explosions.
  • Tractor Beam can also come in handy, as the boss likes to run away. Won’t cancel her Cloak, but may keep her nearby while she’s uncloaked. Some guides say toss this power, others say use it. Looks like a matter of taste.

DANIEL STAHL UPDATE

– re: “Free to Play” — “… my point is that I don’t agree that business plan is the last straw.”

* Goes on to clarify that there is a lot of industry-wide interest in the concept, across every type of MMO regardless of their success level.

* Chris & Jeremy will be discussing this more in-depth NEXT WEEK!

Stahl @ Massively

– “… once you’re a vice-admiral, being able to take bridge officers that you’ve sort of promoted under your wing, and make them their own character[s].”

– Confirms the goal of adding Gorn and Naussican ships to KDF choices.

Stahl @ TrekMovie.com

– Talks more about C-Store, and finding the balance between paid content and played content.

– Hints at voice overs.

Stahl @ DevTracker

– Jokes about renaming it the “dstahl tracker

– Rare particles (via mini-game) should be triggering an Accolade, but currently not working.

– Increasing non-star cluster DXP rewards:  “I agree.

– Weekly content might include repeatable dailies.

– More retrofits, but Klingon ships come first!

– Thoughts on a new bridge officer transfer system.

MATH:

An introduction to Diplomatic Corps:

Despite many great guides being published on the subject, I still get people asking me about how to start on the path to becoming an Ambassador.

So, here’s your official “YOU GOT MATHED” introduction to Diplomacy.

VERY SPOILER HEAVY!  If that concerns you, please skip to the “MAIL” segment.

The reason for the spoilers though, is that many of these missions can be failed, and having to restart a mission that involves only walking & talking is a frustration that feels like a huge waste of time.

So, I’ll give you a quick walkthru of the first SEVEN missions you can do at any time.  Additional special diplomatic missions don’t unlock until you’ve gotten a total of 160 DXP and ranked up to Attache.  Each of these missions give you 10 DXP, so you’ll have to do additional non-combat missions to reach Attache. (e.g., Aid The Planet, or Scan 5 Things)

Vulcan:

– Talk to Ambassador on the steps, then the Romulans by the fountain, then back to the Vulcan and her assistant.

– Talk to ALL of the scholars on the planet, to debunk the death threat letter’s information.  Don’t miss the handful that are up a path in the distance, past the fountain.

– Show the evidence to the Romulan, then confront the Vulcan’s assistant, tell him to “do the right thing.”  He’ll point you to the real culprit – the Romulan lieutenant!  Dun dun DUN!

Starbase 39:

– Speak with the Lt Commander, who will ask you to run all over hell & back introducing yourself to the ambassadors.

– Then you’ll basically end up doing a back & forth between the Ferengi and Deferi until the console on the wall unlocks.

– At this point, make sure you’ve listened to the recording of the Ferengi talking about Entertainment Provisions, then ask Admiral T’nae for input and head to the Ferengi.  Offer him an Entertainment Provision, and … BOOM!  Success.  Now just more running around to mop up.

DS9:

This one’s a doozy.  I’m not going to give you a complete walkthru, just tell you to NOT use the pulse laser on the strange device.  Dowse it with water instead.  As long as you don’t screw that up, you should eventually be able to prove the Gul’s innocence in this matter, and everyone goes home happy.  Just investigate EVERYthing else, and go into the mission assuming the guy is innocent.

Oh, and while you’re at DS9, buy a Bajoran Jumja Stick.  You’ll thank me later.

DO NOT EAT IT!  (and make sure no Tribble does, either)

Memory Alpha:

There are a total of FIVE missions here.  The three important ones are all involving Ferengi brothers.  There’s not much thinking required here, just a bunch of talking and running.  Despite asking almost everyone I know, it doesn’t appear as though you can fail these, so just click click click.  They ARE fun stories, worth reading.  I encourage you to do so, but it’s not required.

Then give your Jumja Stick to Kirayoshi O’Brien.  Easiest 10 DXP EVER!  If your mission log doesn’t update, simply log out and back in.  That should update it.

Another dude at MA will send you off to K7 with medical supplies.  When you arrive, you find out that –SHOCK– your crew has been infected with some sort of bacteria that was contained in the shipment.

Deepspace K7

You’ll have to investigate the cure using the equipment in the lab (attached to the bar – excellent location!).  Again, this is kind of an involved mission, so just pay attention to what you’re clicking on while experimenting.  NOTE:  The buttons will CHANGE POSITION on the final replicator step, so remember what you’re clicking on, not just where the buttons are.  Once you have plugged in the recipe, pick up the antidote at the console next to Nurse Leppa, and shoot your invisible quartermaster in the face with it.  Bingo!

Honorable Mentions:

* AdmiralMurphy:  “Picard Maneuver” — a TNG fan service (no likeness rights available)

* AgentExceider: “Reflections” — You have to confront your ISS mirror self on his/your ship

* Leprech: “Diplomacy at the Point of a Knife” — An interesting twist on diplomacy

Jeremy’s choices:

1) “Smoke & Holograms— Daniel (aka DPT)

** Holo fleet, captured and fight your way out

** Reasons:  Relatively simple, but the beginning of what could be an EPIC story arc.

2) “Something Rotten on Risa— Stoney977

** The mission looks diplomatic, but turns into a murder investigation, then a space chase after the Undine infiltrators.

** Chosen because of its strong and twisty plotline, plus giving an established location a deeper purpose.

Chris’ choices:

1) “Invasion of the Ship Snatchers— E Beyer

** You are lured to a Cardassian ship that’s been disabled by a virus.

** A changeling reveals itself, and its plan to steal your Slipstream tech.

** You have to disable your own ship, using the crippled Keldon.

2) “What are Little Ferengi Made Of— Daniel (aka DPT)

** A classic homage to the TOS episode, with a TWIST!

** Killing a horde of Ferengi sounds UBER fun.
