The headlining feature of the Pi 3 is the built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, but it doesn’t stop there. Here’s the complete specs for the Pi 3:

  • SoC: Broadcom BCM2837 (roughly 50% faster than the Pi 2)
  • CPU: 1.2 GHZ quad-core ARM Cortex A53 (ARMv8 Instruction Set)
  • GPU: Broadcom VideoCore IV @ 400 MHz
  • Memory: 1 GB LPDDR2-900 SDRAM
  • USB ports: 4
  • Network: 10/100 MBPS Ethernet, 802.11n Wireless LAN, Bluetooth 4.0
  • MagPi 43

Raspberry Pi 3 Is Looking Towards Upstream Kernel Support

Today on his blog Anholt wrote, “I spent most of [the month] working on the Raspberry Pi 3 support so I could have a working branch for upstream day 1. That involved cleaning up the SDHOST driver for submission, cleaning up pinctrl DT, writing an I2C GPIO expander driver, debugging the I2C controller, fixing HDMI hotplug handling, debugging EMMC (not quite done!), scraping together some wireless firmware, and a bunch of work trying to get BT working on the UART. I’m happy to say that on day 1 I published a branch that worked the same as a RPi2, and by the end of the day I had wireless working. Some of the patches are now out for review, and I’ll be working on cleaning up the rest in the near future.”

New Generations of Products Powered by Pi

We are testing Mycroft with the Pi 3 and if all goes as planned we will be shipping our backers Mycroft units with a Raspberry Pi 3 at its core. We’d like to thank the Raspberry Pi foundation for all of the work they do to bring makers, hackers and students such a great platform.

Ryan Sipes Mycroft CTO

Ubuntu MATE for the Raspberry Pi 2 and Raspberry Pi 3

We have done what we can to optimise the build for the Raspberry Pi 2
and Raspberry Pi 3, you can comfortably use applications such as
LibreOffice, which in fact is a joy to use 🙂 But the microSDHC I/O
throughput is a bottleneck so we recommend that you use a Class 6 or
Class 10 microSDHC
card.

Other 64bit Kits of Awesome

The Odroid-C2 already has 2GB of RAM, which is also available on the $29 “Plus” version of Pine64’s Pine A64, a quad-core, Cortex-A53 Allwinner A64 SBC with a 40-pin Pi-compatible connector. The PineA64 will soon start shipping to Kickstarter backers, and Pine64 is processing new orders for shipment starting in May.

The $15 version of the Pine A64 with 512MB RAM is sold out, but there’s also a $19 version with 1GB RAM that also moves up to Gigabit Ethernet. As with the Odroid-C2, wireless is an extra-cost option, and despite the Pine A64’s larger dimensions, even the top models are limited to dual USB host ports instead of four on the C2 and Raspberry Pi.

The only other 64-bit ARM hacker boards currently shipping are more expensive 96Boards-compatible SBCs, both of which have onboard wireless. These include Qualcomm’s quad-core, $75 DragonBoard 410c and the octa-core, $99 to $129 HiKey.

RPi Laptop Dock

NexDock is a revolutionary laptop that harnesses the productivity of smartphones, tablets and mini PCs by adding a bluetooth keyboard, a capable battery and a 14-inch screen

Imagine a computer that one day you can use as Chromebook, and the next day as an Ubuntu developer laptop. Imagine a longer lasting computer that you can easily upgrade and customize to become a powerful Windows gamer laptop.
We envision a world where we carry only our mini PCs, which connect to any screen in the world to turn them into tablets, laptops and PCs.

Spotify for Linux Sucks, But At Least We Now Know Why

In a post to the Spotify community forum, company rep ‘Jooon’ reveals that: “…since after September, we have had no developers working on the linux client”.

Microsoft wants to monopolise games development on PC. We must fight it

In my view, this is the most aggressive move Microsoft has ever made. While the company has been convicted of violating antitrust law in the past, its wrongful actions were limited to fights with specific competitors and contracts with certain PC manufacturers.

T-Platforms launches a Linux-based, MIPS-powered all-in-one PC (in Russia)

Most modern desktop and notebook computers ship with Intel or AMD processors and Windows or OS X software. A few companies are positioning products with ARM-based chips as desktop computers. But the Tavolga Terminal TB-T22BT is something different.

The computer is made by Russian company T-Platforms, which also offers an SF-BT1 processor module for those that want to build their own hardware.

Both devices use a Baikal-T1 processor which is a 32-bit dual-core MIPS P5600 processor. Like the computers, the chip was designed in Russia, although it’s based on work from Imagination Technologies (the company behind the MIPS architecture)

Thunderbolt Comes to Linux

Already compatible with Windows PCs and Macs, the super-fast Thunderbolt 3 connector technology will soon also work with Linux PCs. The technology will be featured in a new model of Dell’s upcoming XPS 13 Developer Edition, which will have Ubuntu Linux. Thunderbolt 3 will be available via a USB Type-C port.

The PC maker is building driver support for Thunderbolt 3 and USB Type-C into the XPS 13 Developer Edition, wrote a Dell employee in a company forum.

Thunderbolt 3 is a connector technology that can hook up PCs to external peripherals like storage and monitors. It’s like USB, but four times faster. A 4K movie could be transferred from an external storage device to a PC in 30 seconds.

Linux PCs will be a lot more capable with Thunderbolt 3. Users will be able to connect two 4K monitors simultaneously, connect to external graphics cards and establish a peer-to-peer network with other Linux PCs.

That wasn’t a typo. It will combine the three companies’ IoT, cloud, big data, machine learning, and Docker efforts. To integrate all of this they’ll be using “Snappy” Ubuntu apps, DeviceHive, and Juju Charms. Microsoft will also use an Azure service to manage and capture machine data.

Linux Grandma

Microsoft (hearts) Linux, for Azure’s sake

Microsoft now loves Linux.

This was the message from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, standing in front of an image that read “Microsoft [heart symbol] Linux,” during a Monday webcast to announce a number of services it had added to its Azure cloud, including the Cloudera Hadoop package and the CoreOS Linux distribution.

  • Microsoft has rolled out an astonishing 300 major new features and services in Azure in the last 12 months.
  • There are 10,000 new Azure customers per week.
  • There are currently 350 million Azure Active Directory users.
  • Over 2 million developers using Visual Studio Online.
  • Where once customers were using only basic Azure services, 60% are now using the higher level services.

and…

  • CoreOS support in Azure. Container-optimized Linux distribution with a minimal memory footprint is available starting today in the Azure Marketplace.

Lets Fork it!

Not really, it’s doing great. Maybe we’re not veteran enough?

Note that the linked Debian Fork page specifically says that the anonymous developers behind it support a proposal to preserve options in init systems, rather than demanding the removal of systemd, and are not opposed to change per se. They just don’t want other parts of the system to be wholly dependent on systemd. “We contemplate adopting more recent alternatives to sysvinit, but not those undermining the basic design principles of “do one thing and do it well” with a complex collection of dozens of tightly coupled binaries and opaque logs.”

Manjaro Background

About | Manjaro Linux

Manjaro is a user-friendly Linux distribution based on the independently developed Arch operating system. Within the Linux community, Arch itself is renowned for being an exceptionally fast, powerful, and lightweight distribution that provides access to the very latest cutting edge – and bleeding edge – software. However, Arch is also aimed at more experienced or technically-minded users. As such, it is generally considered to be beyond the reach of those who lack the technical expertise (or persistence) required to use it.

Developed in Austria, France, and Germany, Manjaro provides all the benefits of the Arch operating system combined with a focus on user-friendliness and accessibility. Available in both 32 and 64 bit versions, Manjaro is suitable for newcomers as well as experienced Linux users. For newcomers, a user-friendly installer is provided, and the system itself is designed to work fully ‘straight out of the box’ with features

Why Manjaro was started

When Manjaro was started, there were already many Linux distributions, a fact the team would have been aware of. So I’m betting there were some core ideas and problems Manjaro wanted to solve.

What were those core issues?

Why Arch?

Tell us about your choice to base off Arch? We see more distros doing that now, but when Manjaro started it was not that common. Debian or perhaps even Fedora might have been a more traditional choice for example.

How far away from Arch could you see Manjaro going?

In your opinion do you see a need move away from Arch further to meet the requirements of the project?

Recent Team Shake up?

The Manjaro community.

THe Manjaro community seems very vibrant, with a tight knit group on the forums and other places Manjaro users gather. It reminds me a lot of the proto-Ubuntu community. In your opinion, What are some of the unique aspect of the Manjaro project and it’s community that have attributed to this?

The Future?

What are you looking forward to for in the future of Linux, and Manjaro?

Linus Torvalds Guided Tour of His Home Office – YouTube

Linux kernel developer and maintainer Greg Kroah-Hartman takes on a short tour of his workspace.

Docker to be a big part of Fedora going forward, also Fedora 21’s name

Fedora in Spaaaaace

In the Fedora Cloud WG, we’re planning on producing official Fedora Docker base images — these will be produced and uploaded by Fedora Release Engineering. Right now, because Docker is a key part of the upcoming Project Atomic-based Fedora Atomic, the Cloud SIG is doing the initial work and QA, but, eventually, the plan is to hand this off to the Environments and Stacks WG, because it looks like Docker and containerization will be important across much of Fedora in the future.

This is old news to many of us, but I’ve gotten the question a few times — what will Fedora 21 be named? Well, it’ll be named “Fedora 21″, without any codename. This was decided by the Fedora Project Board last October

  • The first Fedora 21 Alpha release is scheduled for August 5th.

Google recruits top PS3 hacker for Project Zero

Geohots

You should be able to use the web without fear that a criminal or state-sponsored actor is exploiting software bugs to infect your computer, steal secrets or monitor your communications. Yet in sophisticated attacks, we see the use of “zero-day” vulnerabilities to target, for example, human rights activists or to conduct industrial espionage. This needs to stop. We think more can be done to tackle this problem.

Project Zero is our contribution, to start the ball rolling. Our objective is to significantly reduce the number of people harmed by targeted attacks. We’re hiring the best practically-minded security researchers and contributing 100% of their time toward improving security across the Internet.

We’re not placing any particular bounds on this project and will work to improve the security of any software depended upon by large numbers of people, paying careful attention to the techniques, targets and motivations of attackers. We’ll use standard approaches such as locating and reporting large numbers of vulnerabilities. In addition, we’ll be conducting new research into mitigations, exploitation, program analysis—and anything else that our researchers decide is a worthwhile investment.

Nest always thought of itself as a robotics company; the robot is just hidden inside this sleek Appleish case.

Look at who the company brought in as its VP of technology: Yoky Matsuoka, a roboticist and artificial intelligence expert from the University of Washington.

The War Against Upstart

\”To be fair, people just like hating on Canonical. The FSF and Apache Foundation CLA\’s are pretty much equally broken. And they may not be broken because of any relicencing, but because the copyright assignment paperwork ends up basically killing the community. Basically, with a CLA, you don\’t get the kind of \”long tail\” that the kernel has of random drive-by patches. And since that\’s how lots of people try the waters, any CLA at all — changing the license or not — is fundamentally broken.\”

So why do people object so much when Canonical do it? I\’ve written about this in the context of Mir before, but it\’s worth expanding on the general case. The FSF\’s copyright assignment ensures that contributions to GPLed software will only be distributed under GPL-style licenses. The Apache CLA permits the ASF to relicense a contribution under a proprietary license, but the Apache license allows anyone to do that anyway.

In contrast, Canonical ship software under the GPLv3 family of licenses (GPL, AGPL and LGPL) but require that contributors sign an agreement that permits Canonical to relicense their contributions under a proprietary license. This is a fundamentally different situation to almost all widely accepted CLAs, and it\’s disingenuous for Canonical to defend their CLA by pointing out the broad community uptake of, for instance, the Apache CLA.

Shutting down is hard.

I am sorry for piling on, but here\’s an interesting aspect of Upstart I\’d like to shed some light on. Not necessarily because it is hard to fix, but simply because it is quite interesting.

Upstart (as it stands now) will eat your file system.

The existance of mountall on Upstart, and the non-integration of /etc/fstab into the Upstart rule set, results in a lot of additional shortcomings: mountall is a one-time thing for the boot process, all context of file systems, devices and mounts is lost, after it ran, and the file system state is henceforth assumed static. Which of course is not how systems work these days…

This design flaw is one of the things we noticed when we looked into Upstart in detail before we decided to start systemd. 4 years later, nothing has changed, the Upstart design still cannot cover this…

FUD Busting:

2014 is going to be a big year for Linux, but first we reflect on what was big in 2013, how we scored with our predictions, and then we look ahead to 2014.

Will the Steam Box be a flop? Is this a make it or break it year for Ubuntu? We’ll debate those topics and much more in our annual end of year action packed extravaganza…

Big Moments for 2013:

Watch Last Year’s Predictions

We dust off our Action Crystal Balls and tell you what’s going to happen in 2013. We break the future down into major categories, and give it to you straight. The good, the bad, and the stupid.

Chris’ ACTION Crystal Balls:
  • GIMP Wows us with major plans to revamp parts of the UI.

  • Despite accelerated adoption (maybe the best growth year ever) in part thanks to Steam. The desktop will still fail to get the attention of some core compent OEMs as the explosive growth in “Internet of things” devices will dominate the attention of many. Software based networking, in-car infotainment, TVs, phones, etc.

  • Linux’s small footprint and ARM support will put it in the lead for new types of devices in the data center.

  • SteamOS will prove only moderately successful. It will help bring some great titles to Linux, and continue the gains seen in 2013. But at the end of 2014 we’ll feel like we’re waiting to see the next version of SteamOS/SteamBox before it’s ready to go mainstream.

  • Success with Ubuntu Mobile means a new type of customer for Canonical: The Carriers. This type of customer will be interested in features and abilities that an open source community will be in conflict with. This will further the divide between the long time Ubuntu fans, new Ubuntu users, and Canonical on the community.

  • A bad year for Windows on all fronts

Matt’s ACTION Crystal Balls:
  • ChromeOS will become the de facto face of Linux on the desktop; as seen by the adoption with Chromebooks outselling ANYTHING else on Amazon, other online retail outlets.

  • Web applications will have a greater impact on how we use software – using cloud apps will be even more common than in the past.

Two huge opportunities for the Linux desktop right now are the end of Windows XP support and the less than amazing reception of Windows 8 by casual users.

These may like silly stuff to wine about, but your little quarrel couple episodes ago with IRC on same topic, and I share your point of view. Windows is just too comfortable.

SteamOS combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen.
It will be available soon as a free stand-alone operating system for living room machines.

We’re conducting a beta of the overall Steam living-room experience, so we needed to build prototype hardware on which to run tests. At Valve we always rely on real-world testing as part of our design process. The specific machine we’re testing is designed for users who want the most control possible over their hardware. Other boxes will optimize for size, price, quietness, or other factors.

We realized early on that our goals required a new kind of input technology — one that could bridge the gap from the desk to the living room without compromises. So we spent a year experimenting with new approaches to input and we now believe we’ve arrived at something worth sharing and testing with you.

  • ATI oss driver was a no go. Gave me crazy results.
  • Installing a proprietary driver automatically reverts you to standard X via Xmir’s pre-flight checks.
  • Double mouse cursor – A result of the fact that all Mir is doing is providing a single full screen texture within which an x11 session is doing all the work. Which means Mir is doing nothing beyond the frame, for all intents and purposes.

Out of the box, JungleDiskDesktop doesn’t play well with 64bit Ubuntu. When you try to run it, you end up with this error.

> error while loading shared libraries: libnotify.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Here is how you fix the problem:

1) Create a symbolic link from /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu to /usr/lib/.

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libnotify.so.4 /usr/lib/libnotify.so.1*

2) Next, you need to run junglediskdesktop again — this time, it will work, but it’s still not appearing in the panel above. To fix this, use this command.

gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist “[‘all’]”

3) Run junglediskdesktop again, this time it’ll show up in the panel! This also helps Skype users running 64bit Ubuntu, too.

The bash scripts I used, are available upon request – scripts@matthartley.com will send you the scripts automatically.

Explosion as Shaw Building takes down Core Infrastructure in Alberta

  • On July 11th, an electrical transformer on the 13th floor of the Shaw (Large Canadian ISP) building exploded causing a fire
  • A number of important services were knocked offline
  • 911 service for 30,000 Shaw Landline customers, Customers told to use Cell Phones to call 911
  • Repac system – Routes Ambulances to the correct Hospital, Ambulances had to route to the nearest Hospital
  • IBM operates from the Shaw building, and as also offline
  • The City of Calgary 311 system (provides access to an extensive set of government services) was offline, a regular backup number was setup
  • Calgary Transit’s telecommunication system was mostly unavailable
  • Three radio stations in the Shaw building went offline Q107, QR77 and Country 105
  • The Calgary Parking Authority and Calgary Fire Department also experienced problems, as well as ATB Financial online banking.
  • Parts of the Computer Systems for Alberta Justice and Alberta Health Services were taken offline
  • Alberta Health Services had to postpone non-critical surgeries scheduled for the following days because they could not access electronic health records, Calgary Lab Services was also unable to match up test results with patients due to electronic health records being unavailable
  • Registry services such as licenses, vehicle, and land title registrations were unavailable
  • High school transcripts could be processed
  • Peter Bissonnette, president of Shaw Communications: “It’s not yet clear why the backup system failed to take over, but he said the activation of the sprinkler system might have played a role. He said they have to be careful about bringing services back”
  • IBM Canada, the province’s IT contractor whose Shaw Court data centre remained blacked out for more than a day, had to fly the analogue backup tapes that stored all Alberta’s vehicle and property registration data to a backup facility in Markham, Ontario, and carefully load them on to new servers. Some systems had “mirror” backups and were restored within 48 hours, but the registries and other systems take up to 72 hours to completely restore
  • The government hoped to restore the local data center quickly, but when power could not be restored due to water damage, instead had to shift to the Ontario backup, data center operations will not be moved back to the Calgary Servers until later this year

Android 4.1 (JellyBean) gets ASLR and other security updates

  • ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization) was introduced in Android 4.0 but was not fully implemented
  • Android 4.1 adds PIE (Position Independent Executable) support, Heap randomization and Linker randomization
  • These additional mitigation techniques, combined with the existing DEP (Data Execution Prevention) and hardware based NX (No eXecution), make it very impractical to exploit buffer/stack overflow and memory corruption attacks
  • Android has long used OpenBSD’s dlmalloc and cmalloc memory allocators for improved security
  • Android 4.1 also enables the upstream Linux kernels dmesg_restrict and kptr_restrict that disable unprivileged users from reading the kernel ring buffer and many sensitive parts of /proc
  • Detailed Analysis of Android 4.1 Security

AMD releases new Catalyst drivers (12.6) that no longer break Microsoft EMET

Video demonstrates Apple App Store Payment Bypass, leaving developers out of pocket

  • Using a simple 3 step process, users can trick iOS applications into thinking that the user had purchased additional content
  • The three step process involves:
  • Installing a CA Certificate (so the following certificate is trusted)
  • Installing the Certificate of the pirate proxy, in-appstore.com
  • Changing the DNS servers in the WiFi settings
  • This is basically a purposeful ‘Man In The Middle’ attack, passing the purchase attempt through the pirate proxy rather than the real Apple app store
  • It seems that many iOS applications do not actually verify the receipts for purchases using the iTunes API
  • The developer of the bypass proxy notes that since any attempt to verify the receipt would go through the proxy, it can still be spoofed
  • The only way to ensure that a receipt is real, is to verify it using a server controlled by the developer of the app, and from there make the call to iTunes
  • This means that the proxy could still target individual apps and forge responses from those servers
  • What the iTunes API needs to do, is add an additional layer of security beyond TLS (SSL), by signing receipt checking responses with a private key from Apple, that can then be checked against a published public key
  • In the interim, Developers could implement such a system themselves, calling their own server to verify the receipt, that serve then passes the request to Apple, and then adds a signature
  • “The security of the App Store is incredibly important to us and the developer community,” Apple representative Natalie Harrison, told The Loop . “We take reports of fraudulent activity very seriously and we are investigating.”

And second, it will slow the transition to HTML5 and away from Flash by creating more confusion about which codec to use for HTML5 video, which benefits Google by hurting Apple (since Apple doesn’t want to support Flash), but also sucks for users.

Tonight is a truncated edition of Jupiter@Nite, where we wrap up our tear-down/re-build of the Studio Monster Hack. Along the way, we’ll talk a bit more about the troubleshooting theories we’ve had behind this whole set of shenanigans, and some more stuff that’s awesome.

Show Feeds:

Tonight’s Show Notes & Download Below:

Extra mounting brackets?
It’s possible that the surplus mounting brackets we had installed were causing temporary electrical issues, since they were directly contacting the circuitry.

Video card seating?
We’re not CERTAIN, but it’s possible that our video card wasn’t seated properly.  Major failballs right there, AND apparently a common problem for folks using this type of big, honking, ridiculously-gigantic card.

We’ve performed mem tests, drive tests, etc etc.
If we could test it, we have.  If we could tweak it, we have.  Please trust us, we’re computer geeks.

THAT SAID…
You’re more than welcome to share any thoughts you may have had about this process, please head over to https://www.jupitercolony.com

TOMORROW, we’ll power this sucker up and see if it works.
THEN, we’ll share some tech horror stories of our past.
BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, we’ll be doing our usual “Movie Night” in an altogether epic and awesome way.  TUNE IN at 8pm PDT tomorrow for all the excitement!
