DuckDuckGo Blog : Our 2016 Open Source Donations

Thank you all for the nominations for our 2016 open source donations program. As usual, there was a wide variety of projects that could benefit from additional funding and fit the theme of raising the standard of trust online. We try to make this a joint effort with the commuity and you didn’t disappoint! Hear Gabriel, the founder of DuckDuckGo, announce this year’s recipients

Ubuntu 16.10 Isn’t Going To Use Mir / Unity 8 By Default – Phoronix

Similar to the current situation with existing Ubuntu releases, Unity 8 and Mir will be available as an opt-in feature for users wanting to upgrade their desktop, but Unity 7 and the faithful X.Org Server is planned to be the default for Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak.

Plasma Mobile : New base system… Ubuntu Touch?

Our initial Ubuntu Touch base was Ubuntu 15.04. Eventually, our image started to diverge from the Ubuntu Touch base. For example, we upgraded _libhybris to upstream version_because libhybris available in Ubuntu archive diverged too much from upstream to be useful in our context. We also had to upgrade to a newer Qt version, and we also needed to upgrade the base system to Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial Xerus) because we did not have the resources for managing different branches for packaging the latest git KF5/Plasma for 15.04.

OpenWRT Gets Forked By Some Of Its Own Developers As LEDE Project – Phoronix

LEDE will continue to focus upon being “a great embedded Linux distribution” with predictable release cycles and transparent decision making. Among the stated reasons for this “reboot of the OpenWRT community” is that the active core developer count was low, unreliable infrastructure, lack of communication and coordination around the project, not enough people with commit access, and lack of focus on stability and documentation.

Your power management system?

I am starting to play with the power management of my computers running Ubuntu Mate 16.04 (might downgrade but sticking with it for now) and I wanted to know what everyone’s choice for Power Management is, I am looking at powertop but I don’t know how well it will work.

Subsonic (music streaming software) is no longer open source, starting with 6.0 release

Sorry, no. Starting with 6.0, Subsonic is no longer open-source (the source code for older versions is still available).

The main reason for this change is that the source contains some software license codes I have purchased and that shouldn’t be used by forked projects.

The “Oculus Platform” Marketplace For Virtual Reality App Launches This Fall | TechCrunch

Oculus announced the “Oculus Platform” store for developers to distribute their virtual reality apps and experiences today at the Oculus Connect conference. Starting this fall on the Samsung Gear VR made by Oculus, this revamp of the Oculus Share marketplace will let users browse the Oculus Platform within virtual reality and download apps, games, and entertainment experiences.

Eventually, there will be versions of the Oculus Platform for the Rift, iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer. Oculus Platform could become one of the first ways for developers to sell the VR experiences they build, and by creating this marketplace, Oculus could rally the ecosystem to its mobile and PC-based VR headsets.

Oculus open-sources original Rift developer kit’s firmware, schematics, and mechanics | PCWorld

Kicking off the Oculus Connect conference in Los Angeles this weekend, Oculus’s Nirav Patel announced that the original Oculus Rift developer kit (DK1) is now fully open-source, with the exception of the pieces that aren’t actually in production anymore—for instance, the display, which is no longer manufactured.

“We don’t want everyone to have to take the same risks we took. We just want to share the things we learned so you don’t have to do that. We’re all in this to build virtual reality together,” said Patel.

Mandatory Google+ Gmail Integration Quietly Shelved | WordStream

Google has gone to valiant lengths to convince us that rumors of Google+’s demise have been greatly exaggerated, but Google is no longer forcing new Gmail users to connect their account to a Google+ profile — yet another move that could signal the end for Google’s troubled social network.

DuckDuckGo joins Google in being blocked in China

Privacy-oriented search engine DuckDuckGo is now blocked in China. We noticed this over the weekend, and on Sunday DuckDuckGo founder and CEO Gabriel Weinberg confirmed to Tech in Asia that the team has noticed the blockage in China:

GreatFire index of blocked sites suggest that DuckDuckGo got whacked on September 4).

Apple Mac iOS Rumors and News You Care About

“Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend, and we couldn’t be happier,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin.

Currently, shipping estimates for new iPhone 6 orders remains at 7-10 business days, while the iPhone 6 Plus is still showing a shipping delay of 3-4 weeks.

ZFS On Linux is Production Ready, says Richard Yao

The short answer is yes, depending on your definition of stable.

I believe the ZoL is production ready for the following reasons:

  • Key ZFS data integrity features work on Linux like they do on other platforms.
  • ZFS runtime stability on Linux is comparable to other filesystems, with certain exceptions that I document below.
  • ZoL is at near feature parity with ZFS on other platforms.

  • ZFS on Linux machine | Bitratchet

Chrome OS can now run Android apps, no porting required

The app code is all running on top of the Chrome platform, specifically inside of Native Client. In this way the ARC (App Runtime for Chrome) apps run in the same environment as other apps you can download from the Chrome Web Store, even though they are written on top of standard Android APIs. The developers do not need to port or modify their code, though they often choose to improve it to work well with the Chromebook form factor (keyboard, touchpad, optional touchscreen, etc).

GNOME Software 3.14 Will Work On Arch Linux With PackageKit

Richard Hughes cleaned up the PackageKit back-end for Arch/Pacman this weekend so that GNOME Software will run with it and utilize native AppStream meta-data. This work is through the Alpm/Pacman back-end for using this GNOME application to install and manage new apps for the platform.
