FU

The Big Picture for Linux

The Linux desktop is easily still a good 5 years behind Windows and OSX and without LTS Linux wouldn\’t even be in the ballpark.

Linux outlasts Any Distro, Experienced End-Users Should Embrace that.

Watching the events around Ubuntu unfold it\’s once again teaching us something that anyone who\’s watched Linux for a long time, has noticed, but like my self, refuses to fully accept it. Many (maybe all? In the grand scheme) die or change for the worse.

And yet many Linux users are afraid of a \”raw\” Linux experience without the protection of their distro masters. They fear total system havoc without some bearded keeper of the repo gates preventing mass chaos from entering their system during some random update.

Four months into using Arch as my daily driver, in production and play, has taught me a big lesson. Not about how l33t Arch is, or that Wiki\’s can actually not suck, but that upstream is amazing. The near real time work that is being done is inspiring and encouraging to watch and enjoy.

Some examples of cutting edge:

Maybe there is a case to be made, that if you, like me, often enjoy toying with computer instead of playing a video game, then perhaps it in Linux and all upstream code\’s best future interests to try and live outside the box a little.

I\’ve spent a lot of time with each of the main-line distros (Debian, Fedora, Gentoo, Arch, openSUSE, Slackware), and I have to say that if I weren\’t using Arch, I really don\’t know what else I would use.

Mail Sack:

Chris points out that Gene wanted the Enterprise to be clean, and streamlined. Because the technology had become so perfected by that point it was natural and comfortable to use.

Instead, sources said Ballmer\’s timeline had been moved up drastically — first by him and then the nine-member board, including his longtime partner and Microsoft co-founder and chairman Bill Gates — after all agreed that it was best if he left sooner than later.

\”There is never a perfect time for this type of transition, but now is the right time,\” Ballmer, 57, said in a statement. \”We have embarked on a new strategy with a new organization and we have an amazing senior leadership team. Was Ubuntu Edge a Sign?

System76

Brought to you by: System76

The number came out of doing some homework on what would be needed to bring the phone to market. And ultimately bringing a phone like this to market requires a lot industrial design work, electrical design, testing, etc. We could have gone for a lower total number, but with a much higher per-unit cost. So, we tried to find something that was a good compromise.

“We thought we could take a leap forward two or three years in terms of the capabilities of today’s phone through the Edge,”

– ::snip:: –

“It certainly raised eyebrows in the phone industry in a good way. Folks feel there’s a hunger for something new and it sent a signal as to what that something new might look like,” said Shuttleworth.

“I think the full Ubuntu convergence experience will not be in the first round of Ubuntu phones, which we’re targeting for the first quarter 2014,” Silber told CNET. “Just phones, not a full converged plug-into-your-monitor device,” she added, stressing, “I think convergence is the future. It may take many forms.”

elementary OS Luna Review

System76

Brought to you by: System76

In April of 2011, a small group of high school and college kids released an Ubuntu 10.10 remaster that we called elementary OS “Jupiter”.

It was clear from the get-go that Luna would be all about getting things done, and a major component of that is apps that open and close instantly. But aside from optimizing the code, there was a push to optimize speed on the design side as well.

After elementary OS Luna has been officially released, a surge of new eOS users has arrived, and we are here to help. Everyone, including me, loves a “Top Things To Do After Installing…” list, so let’s get you started.

Settings and configuration for the different components of our computers is typically scattered amongst many disjointed, disparate, stand-alone applications with different user interfaces and behavior.

Switchboard solves this problem by enforcing coherency with regard to interface and behavior, and by automatically organizing the different configuration options into one unified and central location.

Switchboard is meant to provide a place for global configuration settings, such as power options, device syncing, or third-party hardware.

Remote Linux Desktop with Splashtop

System76

Brought to you by: System76

Splashtop Streamer is a high-performance audio-video streaming server, enabling remote access from an Android device (tablet/phone) or an iOS device (iPad/iPhone/iPod). You can connect within a Local Area Network or through a cross-network or Internet connection.

Due to its efficient protocol, algorithms and optimizations, Splashtop has been shown in performance benchmarks to deliver up to 15x higher video frame rates and up to 10x lower latency times than its competition. Splashtop sessions are secured with SSL and 256-bit AES encryption, allowing it to serve as a secure pipe between devices, in some cases allowing users to eliminate their need for separate VPN solutions.

Just like its Windows and Mac versions, Splashtop Streamer for Linux aims to be a faster way to connect to your desktop PC from a mobile device. Coupled with the Splashtop apps for iOS and Android, you can view or edit files, run Linux programs, stream music and videos, and more right from your iPhone, iPad, or Android device.

While at first it seems boring yet another remote desktop application for Linux when there’s already VNC and friends, the features offered are fairly interesting. In the press release being issued today, Splashtop claims a 10x performance advantage over VNC.

Splashtop 2 client devices can connect to a remote computer running Ubuntu and the company attributes their “efficient protocol, algorithms, and optimizations” that allow it to deliver 10x the performance over VNC in latencies. Splashtop also claims 15x higher video frame-rates than the competition. I haven’t yet tried out this software on Linux myself so I cannot attest to these performance claims.

Installing to Splashtop to Arch:

  1. For the machine to be accessed, server even, install splashtop-streamer.
  2. For the client, install splashtop-client and for your phone, Splashtop 2 Remote Desktop.

MakeMKV is your one-click solution to convert video that you own into free and patents-unencumbered format that can be played everywhere.

The Process

  • Start Make MKV Before your load the disk
  • Choose your titles – This is a tricky job under Linux. Most the time it’s obvious.
  • Once its done the resulting MKV will be huge. You could keep this, it’s an unencumbered copy of the blu-ray, and is the same quality.
  • Now add your new MKV file to HandBrake
  • Choose your preset based on your needs.

The ReactOS software includes binary and source distributions of the latest ReactOS. This includes the kernel, various subsystems and some basic applications.

Notes:

  • Installer looks straight outta NT4 / Win2k DOS days.

  • File system choices are FAT32 or ext2

  • In a future where ChromeOS and tablets are a viable platform for the majority of your computing, ReactOS could play the role of enabling legacy support for old Win32 apps. In a sense, further eliminating in shred of legitimacy the Windows platform could hold 7+ years out.

Dev World Hoopla

In an email to developers today, Apple revealed that its Developer Center website was breached by unknown hackers and was taken offline last Thursday as a precaution.

\”This is definitely not an hack attack. I have reported all the bugs I have found to the company and waited for approval. I am being accused of hacking but I have not given any harm to the system and i did notwanted to damage [sic],\” writes the user Ibrahim Baliç.

He has since told the Guardian, \”My intention was not attacking. In total I found 13 bugs and reported [them] directly one by one to Apple straight away. Just after my reporting [the] dev center got closed. I have not heard anything from them, and they announced that they got attacked. My aim was to report bugs and collect the datas [sic] for the purpose of seeing how deep I can go with it.\”

\”In essence, with Firefox OS, we made app discovery as easy as browsing the web, and we give you a very good reason to brush up the mobile optimised web sites you already have on the web,\” writes Mozillan Chris Heilmann on the company blog.
