Fixing a broken or forgotten Gnome Keyring

If you get a password prompt every time you login, and you find that passwords are not saved, you might need to create/set a default keyring.

Ensure that the seahorse package is installed, open it (“Passwords and Keys” in system settings) and select View > By Keyring If there is no keyring in the left column (it will be marked with a lock icon), go to File > New > Password Keyring and give it a name. You will be asked to enter a password. If you do not give the keyring a password it will be unlocked automatically, even when using autologin, but passwords will not be stored securely. Finally, right-click on the keyring you just created and select “Set as default”.

Goran J Writes

Subject: HiDPI Support in Linux
Message: Hi Chris and Noah…and Rikai

Today I bought a brand new 28” Samsung UHD monitor so I could enjoy its glorious 4K resolution in my Linux Mint desktop. When I turned on the monitor I was caught by surprise. The image was beautiful and everything was super sharp….and super super tiny at the same time. Searching through the Linux Mint and the nVidia settings I could not find HiDPI option so I can scale my desktop and have a more enjoyable environment. Internet search came back with results that HiDPI in Linux is still not a standard feature. With the amount of 4K display on the market I wonder why. Is there any other Linux Distro that offers HiDPI scaling or I am out of options?

Thanks!
Goran J

Subject: Contact other listeners
Message: Hi Guys/Gals!

I often hear Chris mention anecdotes of listeners getting hired into Linux jobs, and I’d like to hire some of them. 🙂

Since there’s no official forum aside from Reddit, and I’m not keen on the idea of posting job listings on Reddit, what would you suggest as a way for me to reach out to JB listeners in the New England area (or willing to move here) that might be looking for a Linux-centric tech job?

Keep up the good work!

Thanks,
Dave M

The machine I’m running is Ubuntu 15.10 on a slim Dell tower with no graphics card and 8GB of Ram — it should be noted that it started with 4GB but I found that I had a spare stick lying around, so I went ahead and pushed it to eight. Overall, the performance has been phenomenal and there have been no obvious speed or animation issues in the Unity desktop.

Cyanogen Launches A New MOD Platform For Deeper Integration Of Apps In Android — Not To Be Confused With The CyanogenMod Custom ROM

Here is a list of the MODs that will be available on launch and what you should expect them to do:

  • Skype: integrates in the native dialer for VOIP calling, call history, and easy switching from voice to video calls.
  • Cortana: “hands-free multitasking” including voice-activated selfies.
  • Hyperlapse: integrates as a mode in the native camera, allows you to shoot Hyperlapses.
  • OneNote: has many entry points in the OS (dialer, browser, email, calendar) to quickly jot down notes, as well as a Quick Settings tile.
  • TrueCaller: identifies spam calls and texts right away and lets you block them.
  • Social lockscreen: shows relevant posts right on your lockscreen. The promo photo only demonstrates Instagram with the full photo taking up your lockscreen and the caption in the lower part.

You should expect the MOD platform to roll out to users with the Cyanogen OS 13 update

  • Good desktop for developers. Ubuntu LTS compatibility/support with simple UI to let them focus.

  • App indicators work

  • In a couple years high end OEMs like System76 might move to Elementary OS if Ubuntu totally jumps the mobile shark

  • They plan to go w/Wayland, not Mir. Big diff from Ubuntu.

elementary OS Luna Review

System76

Brought to you by: System76

In April of 2011, a small group of high school and college kids released an Ubuntu 10.10 remaster that we called elementary OS “Jupiter”.

It was clear from the get-go that Luna would be all about getting things done, and a major component of that is apps that open and close instantly. But aside from optimizing the code, there was a push to optimize speed on the design side as well.

After elementary OS Luna has been officially released, a surge of new eOS users has arrived, and we are here to help. Everyone, including me, loves a “Top Things To Do After Installing…” list, so let’s get you started.

Settings and configuration for the different components of our computers is typically scattered amongst many disjointed, disparate, stand-alone applications with different user interfaces and behavior.

Switchboard solves this problem by enforcing coherency with regard to interface and behavior, and by automatically organizing the different configuration options into one unified and central location.

Switchboard is meant to provide a place for global configuration settings, such as power options, device syncing, or third-party hardware.
