PowerShell is open sourced and is available on Linux

Today, we are taking the next step in our journey. I am extremely excited to share that PowerShell is open sourced and available on Linux. (For those of you who need a refresher, PowerShell is a task-based command-line shell and scripting language built on the .NET Framework to help IT professionals control and automate the administration of the Windows, and now Linux, operating systems and the applications that run on them.) I’m going to share a bit more about our journey getting here, and will tell you how Microsoft Operations Management Suite can enhance the PowerShell experience.

Google to drop support for Chrome apps on Windows, Mac and Linux

Google has killed a lot of things in the past, including Google Buzz, Google Wave and Google Reader. Well Google’s grim reaper is at it again. This time, Google Chrome apps will no longer work on Windows, Mac and Linux by 2018. The company says only 1 percent of Chrome users took advantage of this feature. However, Chrome apps will still function on Chrome OS, which powers Chromebooks.

Like the BQ phone, the Meizu MX4 is very much a device for early adopters, since Ubuntu for Phones is still in the development phase. While the €169.90 Aquaris E4.5 is a mid-range phone, the Meizu MX4 delivers considerably more computing power for €299. It runs on a Meizu-customised octa-core MediaTek MT6595 SoC with four ARM Cortex-A17 and four ARM Cortex-A7 cores, with a PowerVR G6200 GPU to handle the graphics, all supported by 2GB of LPDDR3 RAM.

The Aquaris M10 Ubuntu Edition combines two different interfaces so you can use it either as a tablet or as a PC. The first module offers all the typical functions of a tablet, while the PC mode is activated automatically when you connect it to a mouse and keyboard.

Save WiFi/Individual Comments

Right now, the FCC is considering a proposal to require manufacturers to lock down computing devices (routers, PCs, phones) to prevent modification if they have a “modular wireless radio”[1][2]
or a device with an “electronic label”[3]. The rules would likely:

  • Restrict installation of alternative operating systems on your PC, like GNU/Linux, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, etc.
  • Prevent research into advanced wireless technologies, like mesh networking and bufferbloat fixes
  • Ban installation of custom firmware on your Android phone
  • Discourage the development of alternative free and open source WiFi firmware, like OpenWrt
  • Infringe upon the ability of amateur radio operators to create high powered mesh networks to assist emergency personnel in a disaster.
  • Prevent resellers from installing firmware on routers, such as for retail WiFi hotspots or VPNs, without agreeing to any condition a manufacturer so chooses.

  • Save WiFi: Act Now To Save WiFi From The FCC | Hackaday

The folks at ThinkPenguin, the EFF, FSF, Software Freedom Law Center, Software Freedom Conservancy, OpenWRT, LibreCMC, Qualcomm, and other have put together the SaveWiFi campaign.

Online comments end 09/08/2015.

Freya 0.3.1 is Here!

At the heart of this upgrade is the latest Hardware Enablement stack from Ubuntu 14.04.3. It includes version 3.19 of the Linux kernel and an updated Mesa that fixes the dreaded “double cursor” glitch. Workspaces in the Multitasking view also now work properly on Nvidia Optimus. The new hardware stack also brings better support for backlights and touchpads on certain laptops, a host of performance and power-related improvements, and support for 5th generation Intel processors. This release should also improve support for (U)EFI systems, especially when installing without an internet connection.

Munich Linux councillor: ‘We didn’t propose a switch back to Windows’

“There are several points of criticism concerning the notebooks of the councillors with very different reasons (not Linux in general). There are 80 councillors in the city. Their work and needs can’t be compared with the whole administration.”

Pfeiler denied that there was any kind of consensus towards a complete reverse migration, but rather suggests a retroactive fitting of Windows for certain specific purposes, adding that there was nothing to suggest that the Limux system was working anything other than well.

Freya on a Mac

Your Mac must not have a Core 2 duo or Solo (or older) processor – only the past couple years of Macs, which have 64-bit EFI, are supported.

Dual Boot Arch and Mac OS X

This tutorial is pretty specific to my latest configuration, but it seems like there might be some people out there who could benefit from my experience. If you have a [1] Macbook Pro 8,2 (the 8,3 model should work as well), with [2] two internal hard drives, and want to [3] dual boot OS X and Arch Linux, utilizing [4] whole disk encryption in both systems… you’re in the right place!

There won’t be much explanation here because most of the in depth explanation has already been described in previous posts. They are linked below in case you get lost for reference to provide additional direction in case you get lost.

The rEFInd Boot Manager

This page describes rEFInd, my fork of the rEFIt boot manager for computers based on the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) and Unified EFI (UEFI). Like rEFIt, rEFInd is a boot manager, meaning that it presents a menu of options to the user when the computer first starts up, as shown below.

rEFInd is a UEFI boot manager. It is a fork of the no-longer-maintained rEFIt and fixes many issues with respect to non-Mac UEFI booting. It is designed to be platform-neutral and to simplify booting multiple OSes.

gummiboot

gummiboot is a simple UEFI boot manager which executes configured EFI images. The default entry is selected by a configured pattern (glob) or an on-screen menu.

TimeShift for Linux is a application that provides functionality similar to the System Restore feature in Windows and the Time Machine tool in Mac OS. TimeShift protects your system by taking incremental snapshots of the file system at regular intervals. These snapshots can be restored later to bring your system to the exact state it was in at the time when the snapshot was taken.

Snapshots are taken using rsync and hard-links. Common files are shared between snapshots which saves disk space. Each snapshot is a full system backup that can be browsed with a file manager.

It’s an open-source world: 78 percent of companies run open-source software

  • 78 percent of respondents said their companies run part or all of its operations on OSS and 66 percent said their company creates software for customers built on open source. This statistic has nearly doubled since 2010, when 42 percent of respondents in the Future of Open Source survey five years ago said that they used open source in the running of their business or their IT environments. This is an all-time high.

  • 93 percent said their organization’s use of open source increased or remained the same in the past year.

  • 64 percent of companies currently participate in open source projects – up from 50 percent in 2014. Over the next 2-3 years, 88 percent are expected to increase contributions to open source projects.

  • Open source has become the default approach for software with more than 66 percent of respondents saying they consider OSS before other options.

Chrome Starts Pushing Java off the Web

Java

Chrome 42, released to the stable channel today, will take a big step toward pushing old browser plugins, including Java and Silverlight, off the Web. Those plugins use a 1990s-era API called NPAPI (“Netscape Plugin API”) to extend the browser, and with Chrome 42, that API is now off by default.

ZFS may be officially included in Debian

Debian

Libdvdcss and ZFS soon in Debian?

We received legal advice from Software Freedom Law Center about the
inclusion of libdvdcss and ZFS in Debian, which should unblock the
situation in both cases and enable us to ship them in Debian soon.

Remote Linux Desktop with Splashtop

System76

Brought to you by: System76

Splashtop Streamer is a high-performance audio-video streaming server, enabling remote access from an Android device (tablet/phone) or an iOS device (iPad/iPhone/iPod). You can connect within a Local Area Network or through a cross-network or Internet connection.

Due to its efficient protocol, algorithms and optimizations, Splashtop has been shown in performance benchmarks to deliver up to 15x higher video frame rates and up to 10x lower latency times than its competition. Splashtop sessions are secured with SSL and 256-bit AES encryption, allowing it to serve as a secure pipe between devices, in some cases allowing users to eliminate their need for separate VPN solutions.

Just like its Windows and Mac versions, Splashtop Streamer for Linux aims to be a faster way to connect to your desktop PC from a mobile device. Coupled with the Splashtop apps for iOS and Android, you can view or edit files, run Linux programs, stream music and videos, and more right from your iPhone, iPad, or Android device.

While at first it seems boring yet another remote desktop application for Linux when there’s already VNC and friends, the features offered are fairly interesting. In the press release being issued today, Splashtop claims a 10x performance advantage over VNC.

Splashtop 2 client devices can connect to a remote computer running Ubuntu and the company attributes their “efficient protocol, algorithms, and optimizations” that allow it to deliver 10x the performance over VNC in latencies. Splashtop also claims 15x higher video frame-rates than the competition. I haven’t yet tried out this software on Linux myself so I cannot attest to these performance claims.

Installing to Splashtop to Arch:

  1. For the machine to be accessed, server even, install splashtop-streamer.
  2. For the client, install splashtop-client and for your phone, Splashtop 2 Remote Desktop.
