Plasma 5.5 Review

Plasma 5.5 features updates to the Breeze theme, there is an expanded feature set in the application launcher, new Plasma Applets, OpenGL ES support has been restored in Kwin, and there is much greater Wayland support. With Plasma 5.5 comes basic support for the Wayland session without depending upon X11/XWayland. However, this KDE Wayland support isn’t yet ready for casual Linux desktop users

• KDE Plasma 5.5 Officially Released

digiKam 5.0.0-beta2 is released

This release marks almost complete port of the application to Qt5 and KF5 API. All Qt4/KDE4 code has been removed and many parts have been re-written, reviewed, and tested. Porting to Qt5 required a lot of work, as many important APIs had to be changed or replaced by new ones.

In addition to code porting, we introduced several changes and optimizations, especially regarding dependencies on the KDE project. Although digiKam is still a KDE desktop application, it now uses many Qt dependencies instead of KDE dependencies. This simplifies the porting job on other operating systems, code maintenance, while reducing sensitivity of API changes from KDE project.

Kdenlive 15.12, what to expect

We have been working hard over the past months to improve stability, polish the interface and continue our big code cleanup. Kdenlive 15.12.0 will be released next week, and here are some of the changes you will get with this new version:

New Features

We managed to add a few nice features. here are a few of them:

• Timeline effects and Bin effects can be temporarily disabled and re-enabled in 2 clicks
• A basic implementation of a copy / paste feature has been added, which allows you to save a part of your timeline and import it later inside another project with all effects and transitions being editable
• Track transparency: a simple click allows you to enable / disable transparency for a given track
• Icons now automatically adapt their color scheme (light or dark) to the UI theme

With the upcoming 15.12 release the situation is quite different, as there are a significant number of changes

Krita 2.9.10 Released

The tenth bugfix release already! There are quite a few fixes, though the focus these days is really on getting Krita 3.0 ready for the first alpha release. Of particular interest to owners of a system with an AMD processor is the option to disable vectorization support. That might improve performance, but only for users of AMD systems! We’ve also got a fix by a new contributor, Nicholas LaPointe!

ksuperkey

ksuperkey allows you to open the application launcher in KDE Plasma Desktop using the Super key (also known as the ‘Windows key’). Unlike other solutions, it will not affect your current keyboard shortcuts, as the Super key will still act as a modifier when held down.

Note that ksuperkey does not depend on any specific desktop environment and should work fine on KDE Plasma 4, Plasma 5, GNOME Shell, Unity, Xfce, LXDE, etc.

KeePassX 2.0 has arrived

KeePassX 2.0 is using the new .kdbx (same as KeePass 2) database format.
You can import your .kdb database from 0.4 from the Database > Import KeePass 1 database.

This is a one-way process though. You can’t migrate back to the .kdb format.

Mozilla Will Stop Developing And Selling Firefox OS Smartphones

Farewell Firefox OS smartphones. Mozilla today announced an end to its smartphone experiment, and said that it would stop developing and selling Firefox OS smartphones. It will continue to experiment on how it might work on other connected devices and Internet of Things networks.

The announcement was made earlier today at Mozilla’s developer event in Orlando, “Mozlando“, and several people were tweeting the basics of the news. Now Mozilla has provided us with a full statement from Ari Jaaksi, Mozilla’s SVP of Connected Devices.

“We are proud of the benefits Firefox OS added to the Web platform and will continue to experiment with the user experience across connected devices. We will build everything we do as a genuine open source project, focused on user experience first and build tools to enable the ecosystem to grow.

Firefox OS proved the flexibility of the Web, scaling from low-end smartphones all the way up to HD TVs. However, we weren’t able to offer the best user experience possible and so we will stop offering Firefox OS smartphones through carrier channels.

We’ll share more on our work and new experiments across connected devices soon.”

• Firefox OS was first unveiled in 2013, with the aim of targeting the developing world and late adopters with low-cost handsets.

The Linux Vendor Firmware Service Welcomes Dell

When it goes on sale, firmware updates in Linux will work out-of-the-box. I’ve been told that Dell are considering expanding out the LVFS support to all new models supporting UEFI updates. In order to prioritize what models to work on first, I’ve been asked to share this anonymous survey on what Dell hardware people are using on Linux and to gauge if people actually care about being able to upgrade the firmware easily in Linux.

Warsow 2.0 adds a tutorial level to help new gamers, many graphical effects were revamped, weapon parameters were tweaked, new HUDs, and many other changes.

The Warsow 2.0 renderer is reported to be 30~50% faster for overall performance, reduced vRAM footprint for textures, KTX texture format support, support for the GLSL binary cache, multi-threading to speed-up map loading, and many other interesting changes.

Emby – The open media solution

Bringing all of your media together into one place has never been easier. Your Emby Server automatically converts and streams your media on-the-fly to play on any device.

Prepare your media

Emby identifies your media according to folder structure, file name, and the type of library to which it is assigned. Once identified, Emby downloads information like posters, descriptions, and ratings that make media selection a rich experience. The requirements for organizing and naming files are quite flexible, but will require some basic structure.

The general recommendations are:

• Separate media into appropriate folders (e.g., Movies in a “Movies” folder, TV shows in a “TV Shows” folder, music in a “Music” folder, photos in a “Photos” folder, etc.)

• Movies should be named as “Name (Year).exe”, for example “Brave (2012).mp4”

• TV shows should include season and episode numbers in the name, and be stored in separate folders per show. For example: “\TV\Homeland\Homeland s01e01.mp4”

• Music should be stored within artist and album folders, such as “\Music\Artist\Album\tracks”

Install the Server

Once your media is named and organized, it’s time to install the Server. The server is available on a number of platforms ranging from Windows to Linux, Mac, FreeBSD and Nas devices.

• Chris has noticed better compatibility under Firefox than Chrome, for playback, and Metadata management.

• Decoding Performance seems be worse than Plex… However both are using ffmpeg on the backend. Not sure why.

• My specific use case is a bit different than normal. I am running with a minimum amount of media. Enough to last the Finding Linux roadtrip, and maybe a bit more. I’m not loading it up with hundreds of TV shows and movies.

As far as I know, sshuttle is the only program that solves the following
common case:

• Your client machine (or router) is Linux, FreeBSD, or MacOS.
• You have access to a remote network via ssh.
• You don’t necessarily have admin access on the remote network.
• The remote network has no VPN, or only stupid/complex VPN
  protocols (IPsec, PPTP, etc). Or maybe you are the
  admin and you just got frustrated with the awful state of
  VPN tools.
• You don’t want to create an ssh port forward for every
  single host/port on the remote network.
• You hate openssh’s port forwarding because it’s randomly
  slow and/or stupid.
• You can’t use openssh’s PermitTunnel feature because
  it’s disabled by default on openssh servers; plus it does
  TCP-over-TCP, which has terrible performance (see below).

Microsoft Has Own Distro

Microsoft has developed its own Linux distribution. And Azure runs it to do networking.

Redmond’s revealed that it’s built something called Azure Cloud Switch (ACS), describing it as “a cross-platform modular operating system for data center networking built on Linux” and “our foray into building our own software for running network devices like switches.”

But it appears Redmond couldn’t find SDN code to fits its particular needs, as it says ACS “… focuses on feature development based on Microsoft priorities” and “allows us to debug, fix, and test software bugs much faster. It also allows us the flexibility to scale down the software and develop features that are required for our datacenter and our networking needs.”

ACS believes in the power of Open Networking. ACS together with the open, standardized SAI interface allows us to exploit new hardware faster and enables us to ride the tide of ASIC innovation while simultaneously being able to operate on multiple platforms. Running on Linux, ACS is able to make use of its vibrant ecosystem. ACS allows to use and extend Open Source, Microsoft, and Third Party applications. The main functional blocks from top to the bottom of the ACS stack are shown in the figure below.

VirtualBox No Long to Provide Info about Security Vulnerabilities

This update fixes an unspecified security issue in VirtualBox related to
guests using bridged networking via WiFi. Oracle no longer provides
information on specific security vulnerabilities in VirtualBox. To still
support users of the already released Debian releases we’ve decided to
update these to the respective 4.1.40 and 4.3.30 bugfix releases.

China’s Year of the Linux Desktop

For years, the “year of the Linux desktop” was right around the corner: Open-source software would displace Windows (or Window$), and usher in a glorious, peaceful revolution in the computing industry.

If Dell is to be believed, that revolution is happening now.

Dell’s head of China told The Wall Street Journal that NeoKylin Linux is shipped on 42 percent of the PCs it sells into the country, primarily for the commercial and government PCs that Dell specializes in. Hewlett-Packard also ships NeoKylin-equipped PCs to China, the paper said, but it’s unclear how many they sell with the OS installed.

America’s crackdown on open-source Wi-Fi router firmware

Analysis America’s broadband watchdog is suffering a backlash over plans to control software updates to Wi-Fi routers, smartphones, and even laptops.

In a proposed update [PDF] to the regulator’s rules over radiofrequency equipment, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) would oblige manufacturers to “specify which parties will be authorized to make software changes.”

In addition, it proposes that “modifications by third parties should not be permitted unless the third party receives its own certification.”

AMD Confirms Vulkan Driver For Linux, But To Start Off As Closed-Source

AMD has finally revealed some basic details concerning their support of Vulkan on Linux. AMD has a Vulkan driver but it will begin its life as closed-source, reports Phoronix. In time the AMD Vulkan driver will transition to being open-source. This Vulkan driver is built to interface with their new AMDGPU kernel DRM driver that’s part of their long talked about AMD open-source strategy for Linux. This closed-then-open Vulkan driver will be competing with Valve’s Intel Vulkan driver that will be open from day one.
