Ubuntu Userland on Windows 10

Ubuntu on Windows — The Ubuntu Userspace for Windows Developers

Here’s let’s break it down slowly…

  1. Windows 10 users
  2. Can open the Windows Start menu
  3. And type “bash” [enter]
  4. Which opens a cmd.exe console
  5. Running Ubuntu’s /bin/bash
  6. With full access to all of Ubuntu user space
  7. Yes, that means apt, ssh, rsync, find, grep, awk, sed, sort, xargs, md5sum, gpg, curl, wget, apache, mysql, python, perl, ruby, php, gcc, tar, vim, emacs, diff, patch
  8. And most of the tens of thousands binary packages available in the Ubuntu archives!“So maybe something like a Linux emulator?”

Now you’re getting warmer! A team of sharp developers at Microsoft has been hard at work adapting some Microsoft research technology to basically perform real time translation of Linux syscalls into Windows OS syscalls. Linux geeks can think of it sort of the inverse of “wine” — Ubuntu binaries running natively in Windows. Microsoft calls it their “Windows Subsystem for Linux”. (No, it’s not open source at this time.)

So as part of the engineering work, I needed to wrap the stock Ubuntu root filesystem into a Windows application package (.appx) file for suitable upload to the Windows Store. That required me to use Microsoft Visual Studio to clone a sample application, edit a few dozen XML files, create a bunch of icon .png’s of various sizes, and so on.

Mono Relicensed MIT

At Microsoft Build today, we announced that we are re-releasing Mono under the MIT license and have contributed it to the .NET Foundation. These are major news for Mono developers and contributors, and I am incredibly excited about the opportunities that this will create for the Mono project, and for other projects that will be able to benefit from this.

Passwords are the keys to our online life, but they are painful to manage securely. We’ve all been told each account should be secured with a strong unique password, but we often fallback for the easy solution: a handful of simple memorizable passwords.

We want to make it even easier to do it right. We want to bring an end to password pain with a simple solution affordable to all: ZenyPass. No-Cost RHEL Developer Subscription now available

Today, Red Hat announced the availability of a no-cost Red Hat Enterprise Linux developer subscription, available as part of the Red Hat Developer Program. Offered as a self-supported, development-only subscription, the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Developer Suite provides you with a more stable development platform for building enterprise applications — across cloud, physical, virtual, and container-centric infrastructures. Red Hat SVP Craig Muzilla added some good points in his blog, too.

So, why did we do this? As DevOps processes and agile software methods become the primary means for creating software, it is critical that software developers have access to the same environments and tools during their development phases as they will use when they push out their software into production. Especially as they build applications for cloud environments. And we expect Linux to be key to future success.

To download Red Hat Enterprise Linux Developer Suite, which includes Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 server, a collection of development tools, and much more, you must have an account and need to accept the terms and conditions of the Red Hat Developer Program which provides $0 subscriptions for development use only. Read more about the Red Hat Developers Program.

Emulation Gaming on Linux

System76

Brought to you by: System76

Game Emulators for GNU/Linux

Linux supports a variety of game emulators that allow users to play games that were originally intended for hardware like the Gameboy, arcade games, Atari, and many others. The emulators are relatively easy to setup as readers will see.

MAME is going open source to be a ‘learning tool for developers’

The folks who maintain MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) are aiming to make the project completely open source in order to expand both its pool of supporters and its utility to developers and historians.

This is notable because MAME is seen to be the premier emulator for arcade games, and the volunteers who maintain it have done laudable work to preserve artifacts of the game industry in a playable state.

MAME’s source code has long been freely available, but it’s never technically been open source. Instead it’s been available under a modified BSID license that prohibits, among other things, commercial use of the code.

According to the Lakka’s official website, it is a lightweight distribution of GNU/Linux that was designed to transform any computer into a full-blown retro game console. Lakka is derived from the well-known OpenELEC operating system.

Being built on top of the well-known RetroArch retro game emulator tool, the Lakka Linux distribution is capable of emulating a wide variety of hardware. Additionally, it includes attractive features like video streaming, joypad hotplug, and Braid-like rewinding.

Lakka – The DIY retro emulation console

Lakka is a lightweight Linux distribution that transforms a small computer into a full blown game console.

Mupen64 Nintendo 64 Emulator

Mupen64 is a cross-platform plugin-based N64 emulator which is capable of accurately playing many games. Included are four MIPS R4300 CPU emulators, with dynamic recompilers for 32-bit x86 and 64-bit amd64 systems, and necessary plugins for audio, graphical rendering (RDP), signal co-processor (RSP), and input. There is 1 included OpenGL video plugin, called RiceVideo. There are 3 other excellent video plugins being maintained by wahrhaft, called Arachnoid, Glide64, and Z64.

Free and legal ROMs

Lutris

Lutris is an open source gaming platform for GNU/Linux. It allows you
to gather and manage (install, configure and launch) all your games
acquired from any source, in a single interface.

Lutris’ main window

Features
  • Manage your Linux games, Windows games, emulated console games and
    browser games
  • Launch your Steam and Desura games
  • Community-written installers to ease up your games’ installation
  • More that 20 emulators installed automatically or in a single
click, providing support for most gaming systems from the late 70’s to
    the present day.
  • Download and play libre and freeware games

There’s a lot more to come, here are some of the planned
features that you can expect in future versions:

  • Humble Bundle and GOG support
  • Mass import of emulator ROMs using the TOSEC database
  • Game saves management
  • Archive your installation files on external or network drives for a
    fully automatic installation procedure
  • Joystick configuration GUI with keyboard mapping features
  • Community features: friends list, chat and multiplayer event
    planning

Gnome Video Arcade

GNOME Video Arcade is a simple Mame frontend for the GNOME desktop.

It supports both the xmame and sdlmame ports of MAME for GNU/Linux and other UNIX-like operating systems, and can utilize third-party data files like arcade history and game categories.

GNOME Video Arcade recognizes that the frontend is not the point; the games are. As such, its chief design goal is to help you quickly find a game to play and then get out of the way. Its purpose is not to help you manage your ROM collection, nor to provide a confusing graphical interface for MAME’s plethora of configuration options.

GNOME Video Arcade was written by MatthewBarnes and is released under terms of the GNU General Public License,

Oculus to develop Rift for Windows only, suspends Mac, Linux work | Computerworld

Sorry, Mac and Linux fans: Facebook-owned Oculus Rift, the headset that perhaps more than any other device has ignited public interest in virtual reality, will run almost exclusively on well-appointed Windows PCs, at least in the near future.

The process that most laptops use to output video doesn’t work with the Rift, and Oculus has temporarily halted development for hardware running Apple and Linux. That’s the takeaway from the spec information Oculus published Friday detailing what type of computer would be compatible with its headset.

Four Remote Packet-of-Death Vulnerabilities In The Linux Kernel

Just this morning the major VENOM security vulnerability was made public while a few hours later, a kernel developer has gone public with four “remote packet of death” vulnerabilities affecting a mainline Linux kernel WLAN driver.

VENOM, CVE-2015-3456, is a security vulnerability in the virtual floppy drive code used by many computer virtualization platforms. This vulnerability may allow an attacker to escape from the confines of an affected virtual machine (VM) guest and potentially obtain code-execution access to the host. Absent mitigation, this VM escape could open access to the host system and all other VMs running on that host, potentially giving adversaries significant elevated access to the host’s local network and adjacent systems.

Exploitation of the VENOM vulnerability can expose access to corporate intellectual property (IP), in addition to sensitive and personally identifiable information (PII), potentially impacting the thousands of organizations and millions of end users that rely on affected VMs for the allocation of shared computing resources, as well as connectivity, storage, security, and privacy.

Can a 20 year old Star Trek game contain the secrets to a fantastic Action Adventure game for anyone? Well I think so, and in this episode I\’ll attempt to make my case!

Why I think Star Trek the 25th Anniversary has the key ingredients to a great game!

Intro:

Instead of a game in which you simply rehash events that have been modified into a playable format, Star Trek: 25th Anniversary presents you with all new scenarios that run in the same vein as the original television series.

Graphics
Although the game graphics are clearly unspectacular by today\’s standard, they serve their purpose well. They were able to bring scenes to life that the TV shows budget, would never have allowed for.

Not afraid to have a more advanced look.

Fans got to see well known locations re-imagined, or in one mission, all beat up!

Voices
The digitized voices are available only on the Enhanced CD-ROM version. Playing the CD-ROM version is like acting out as an episode of Star Trek.

The Floppy disk version of the game was too limited on space for the voices.

Voice overs, multiple choice, often funny

**A real challenge*
NO hand holding, you have to look up facts, use tools in the scene. Find them your self.

First scene is a battle, no tutorial. Later in the game there are rather clever things you have to pick up on, to solve locks and puzzles. (This was pre-Google too).

Many missions had a sub-game wherein the player would figure out how to get the redshirt killed, although this would diminish their rating at the end of the mission.

The use of your crew is a key game play element. Turning them from token tagalongs, to full fledged helpers. And they act/help in the way you expect for their character.

Adorable copy protection
As a holdover from the Floppy Disk version, the CD-ROM version retains the copy protection in the form of a star chart inside the instruction manual. This chart must be used in order to choose the correct destination star system for each mission. This is a simple but effective copy protection scheme that fits well into the context of the game, unlike the traditional but tiresome \”find the fifth word on the third page\” routine.

Copy protection via the manual / sector map

The game contains a copy-protection system that asks the player to consult the game\’s manual to find out what star system to warp to on the navigation map. Warping to the wrong system sends the player into either Klingon or Romulan neutral zones, and initiates an extremely difficult battle that often ends in the destruction of the Enterprise.

The lost 4th Season

When the writers wrote this game, they viewed it as the never aired 4th season. And wanted it to feature stories and characters that would have been in that season.

Combined with the voice overs, this gives the game a nearly episodic feel to it. And sucks in the player.

This game manages to cross blur the lines between game and dramatic entertainment. Much how TOR does for me now.

Final Notes:

  • One of DeForest Kelley\’s last roles
  • When a closeup of Harry Mudd is displayed on Enterprise\’s viewscreen, his facial features are obscured by shadows. This is because Paramount required that when likenesses of real actors or actresses were used in the game, the approval of the actor or actress in question was needed. However, Roger C. Carmel, who played Mudd originally, had passed away by the time the game was made. This problem was only noted near the end of development, and negotiating a solution with Paramount would have delayed the release. Therefore the decision was made not to actually show Mudd\’s face clearly.
