• Endless OS 3.2 Released, Rebases From GNOME Shell 3.8 To 3.22 — On the UI side, there are big updates to its desktop with the re-basing process from GNOME Shell 3.8 to GNOME Shell 3.22. Moving forward, they intend to re-base their desktop changes much more often to allow for a smoother transition to using the newer GNOME code in their operating system.
• Tuxedo Announces Its Own Ubuntu Flavor — “What we have done is [deliver a] desktop that is strongly adapted to the needs of our users. With [our] own theme, own icons, own boot logo and […] the latest firmware, the latest NVIDIA drivers (if necessary) and Linux kernel 4.11 preinstalled! Not to mention our configuration adjustments on the GRUB and optimizations to other system-relevant files.”
• 2017 Linux Laptop Survey Results — There are 30,171 responses, a lot of data to now sift through while in this article is an overview of the initial findings.
• These Videos of Mycroft Are Just Too Funny — As an intended open-source alternative to Amazon Alexa, Apple Siri and Google Home, the humble Mycroft AI has an awful lot of hype to live up to.
• Youyota Sailfish OS 2-in-1 Tablet — The Youyota Tablet packs Quad-Core Intel chipsets, and runs on Sailfish OS.
• Mozilla launches Project Things IoT framework on Raspberry Pi — Mozilla has now announced its own Project Things framework designed to pull together existing Web of Things specifications and code under a global framework comprised of device, gateway, and cloud components. KMail’s ‘Send Later’ caused PGP encrypted private emails to be sent in plain-text

KMail, an email client from the KDE Project, introduced a new feature in version 4.11 that lets users delay sending of emails until a scheduled later time. Unfortunately, this new feature wasn’t compatible with KMail’s existing OpenPGP implementation.

Fedora Workstation 26 and beyond

Below is a sampling of the things we are working on.

• Having that in place should allow us to create a solution where you only use the NVidia driver when you want the extra graphics power which will of course require significant work from Nvidia to enable it on their side so I can’t give a definite timeline for when all the puzzle pieces are in place. Just be assured we are working on it and talking regularly to NVidia about it. I will let you know here as soon as things come together.

• Another major project we been working on for a long time in Fleet Commander. Fleet Commander is a tool to allow you to manage Fedora and RHEL desktops centrally.

• All this features can be set and controlled on either a user level or a group level or organization wide due to the close integration we have with FreeIPA suite of tools. The data is stored inside your organizations LDAP server alongside other user information so you don’t need to have the clients connect to a new service for this, and while it is not there in this initial release we will in the future also support Active Directory.

• PipeWire now aims at unifying linux Audio and Video. The long term the goal is for PipeWire to not only provide handling of video streams, but also handle all kings of audio. Due to this Wim has been spending a lot of time making sure PipeWire can handle audio in a way that not only address the PulseAudio usecases, but also the ones handled by Jack today. A big part of the motivation for this is that we want to make Fedora Workstation the best place to create content and we want the pro-audio crowd to be first class citizens of our desktop.
  Fedora Workstation has been leading the charge in supporting HiDPI on Linux and we hope to build on that with the current work to enable fractional scaling support.
  Carlos Garnacho has been doing some great work recently improving the general performance of GNOME Shell.

• Essentially what we are doing is making it very simple for a Fedora maintainer to build a Flatpak of the application they maintain through the Fedora package building infrastructure and push that Flatpak into a central Flatpak registry.
  While playback these days have moved to streaming where locally installed codecs are of less importance for the consumption usecase

• Luckily we are at a crossroads now where a lot of widely used codecs have their essential patents expire (mp3, ac3 and more) while at the same time the industry focus seems to have moved to royalty free codec development moving forward (Opus, VP9, Alliance for Open Media). We have been spending a lot of time with the Red Hat legal team trying to clear these codecs, which resulted in mp3 and AC3 now shipping in Fedora Workstation.
  We been looking at this for a while now and hope to be able to start sharing information with users on which laptops they should get that will have good battery life under Fedora.

It combines the idea of the rsync algorithm with the idea of git-style content-addressable file systems, and creates a new system for efficiently storing and delivering file system images, optimized for high-frequency update cycles over the Internet.

Canonical Updates Snapcraft on Ubuntu with Support for Resuming Snap Downloads

The biggest change in the Snapcraft 2.31 release appears to be support for resuming the download of the core Snap when building classic Snaps when an error occurs because the package can’t be fetched. This could come in handy during tests and in CI when you package your apps as Snaps.

Unfortunately, MCBC/MCPE/C++ Edition is currently only available on one desktop platform: Windows 10. Well, almost. Education Edition (an education-specialized port of Bedrock Codebase) runs on macOS, and I guess that a macOS Edition is quite likely to come in the future.

Another huge deal is that there is no Xbox Live for Android yet (surprisingly!) and Linux has no store, no update mechanism for closed source stuff etc, so we would need to make our own store and launcher just to sell there. That’s a massive amount of work, probably more than just porting issues.

Vault7 – HIVE Targets Linux

The CIA has developed automated multi-platform malware attack and control
systems covering Windows, Mac OS X, Solaris, Linux and more, such
as EDB’s “HIVE” and the related “Cutthroat” and “Swindle” tools, which are
_described in the examples section below._

• Vault7 – Home

HIVE

HIVE is a multi-platform CIA malware suite and its associated control
software. The project provides customizable implants for Windows, Solaris,
MikroTik (used in internet routers) and Linux platforms and a Listening
Post (LP)/Command and Control (C2) infrastructure to communicate with
these implants.

The implants are configured to communicate via HTTPS with the webserver of a
cover domain; each operation utilizing these implants has a separate cover
domain and the infrastructure can handle any number of cover domains.

Each cover domain resolves to an IP address that is located at a commercial
VPS (Virtual Private Server) provider. The public-facing server forwards all
incoming traffic via a VPN to a ‘Blot’ server that handles actual connection
requests from clients. It is setup for optional SSL client authentication: if
a client sends a valid client certificate (only implants can do that), the
connection is forwarded to the ‘Honeycomb’ toolserver that communicates with
the implant; if a valid certificate is missing (which is the case if someone
tries to open the cover domain website by accident), the traffic is forwarded
to a cover server that delivers an unsuspicious looking website.

The Honeycomb toolserver receives exfiltrated information from the implant; an
operator can also task the implant to execute jobs on the target computer, so
the toolserver acts as a C2 (command and control) server for the implant.

Similar functionality (though limited to Windows) is provided by the RickBobby
project.

What time period is covered?

The years 2013 to 2016. The sort order of the pages within each level is determined by date (oldest first).

WikiLeaks has obtained the CIA’s creation/last modification date for each page but these do not yet appear for technical reasons. Usually the date can be discerned or approximated from the content and the page order. If it is critical to know the exact time/date contact WikiLeaks.

The Fan Noise

Enemy #1 the Librem 15 is really loud. Too loud to use when on mic, and too loud to focus when working. It had to be solved.

Things attempted:

1. Power management under Pure OS
2. Re-Load the system to Ubuntu 16.04 and check for drivers/firmware
3. On suggestion from the IRC, installed Windows 10.
4. Installed Arch, tried messing with an Intel_pstate controller.
5. Unplugged Fan!

No Ethernet

Media production sucks over Wifi. For me, a high-end laptop needs to have Ethernet, my workflow basically requires it. So I had compensated by buying a USB-C adapter.

Pros

• It is well built, compares with any other well built PC laptop very well.
• When plugged in, speed feels very responsive.
• Easy to hold, feels good in the hand.
• LG screen is high-end, has some side address challenges.
• USB-C is kinda cool, want to play with that more.
• Very easy to nuke and pave. Did not have trouble loading any distro, or even Windows.
• It is undeniably unique, and rare. That’s sorta special, and feels a bit like a kit car at the same time.

We were exposed to an intrusion today. It was brief and it shouldn’t impact many people, but if it impacts you, it’s very important you read the information below.

What happened?

Hackers made a modified Linux Mint ISO, with a backdoor in it, and managed to hack our website to point to it.

• Another story of Unix Trojan: Tsunami (IRC/Bot)

This case is actually a same old flaw’s story: looks like the system was exploited via web admin panel abuse by HTTP access (sorry, can not tell you which web panel right now) using the tools that can send rapid packet fetch/wget requests (later on we know that the malware discussed here also have that function), the root privilege was gained via crontab UID (root, indeed), and practically overall server’s security was compromised from that hole. And the bad guys was compiling nasty downloader/IRC Bot backdoor (known previously named as TSUNAMI) with deleting all source traces+logs related, thus run & hide its service using the fake bash process (ever see a BSD system with bash shell process before? *smile*).

All forums users should change their passwords.

It was confirmed that the forums database was compromised during the attack led against us yesterday and that the attackers acquired a copy of it. If you have an account on forums.linuxmint.com, please change your password on all sensitive websites as soon as possible.

The database contains the following sensitive information:

• Your forums username
• An encrypted copy of your forums password
• Your email address
• Any personal information you might have put in your signature/profile/etc…
• Any personal information you might written on the forums (including private topics and private messages)

A new long-term support (LTS) version of Ubuntu is coming out in April, and Canonical just announced a major addition that will please anyone interested in file storage. Ubuntu 16.04 will include the ZFS filesystem module by default, and the OpenZFS-based implementation will get official support from Canonical.

Canonical Presents Sony Xperia Z1 and OnePlus One as Ubuntu Phones

“Today, we’re celebrating the arrival of two new Ubuntu phone community ports! If you’re the lucky owner of a Sony Xperia Z1, you will soon be able to download an image to turn it into an Ubuntu phone and PC! Alternatively, if you’re the owner of a OnePlus One you will be able to flash and use Ubuntu on your phone,” Thibaut Rouffineau explained.

We owe a big thank to the Ubuntu community for porting Ubuntu to these devices and especially Marius Gripsgard for his work on the OnePlus One! More widely, this is a meeting of the minds with phone vendors who have been pushing open source in their devices and their developer community for a while. The Sony open source efforts in particular have been essential to this work. Similarly OnePlus’ commitment to open source has helped tremendously towards this port becoming available.

Mimic is a fast, lightweight Text-to-speech engine developed by Mycroft A.I. and VocaliD, based on Carnegie Mellon University’s FLITE software. Mimic takes in text and reads it out loud to create a high quality voice. Mimic’s low-latency, small resource footprint, and good quality voices set it apart from other open source text-to-speech projects.
