Canonical is playing host to a ‘fractional scaling hackfest‘ in its’ Taipei offices this week. Both GNOME developers and Ubuntu developers are in attendance, ready to wrestle with

The aim: improve GNOME HiDPI support.

Some of the limitations:

  • You either get 1:1 or 2:1 scaling, nothing in between
  • The cut-off point that is somewhat arbitrarily chosen and you don’t get a say in it
  • In multi-monitor systems, all monitors share the same scale

Arc Menu is an alternative app launcher for GNOME Shell. It replaces the Activities button in the top bar with a traditional ‘Start Menu’ style launcher.

Once it’s installed, you can click the tile icon in the GNOME menu up top. You’ll see a little overlay with a bunch of squares. The gTile overlay will hover over an open window, and you can click one (or more) of the squares to place the window in that area.

Gnome raised money to defend it’s Trademark from Groupon, which has quickly raised the white flag. Is this instant groundswell of support the dawn of a new community attitude towards Gnome?

Plus an exciting first live on the show, tons of great feedback & more!

Firefox Challange Follow Up

Celebrating 10 Years of Firefox | The Mozilla Blog

10 years ago we built Firefox to give you a choice. The Web was a monoculture and the only way in was through the company that controlled your operating system. We believed then, and so did many of you, that the Web deserved an independent alternative. Today hundreds of millions of people trust Firefox because they understand that we’re different; that our independence lets us put you first.

Mozilla Introduces ‘Forget Button’ for Firefox and Dev Edition Browser

With a huge developer user base, Mozilla’s new Firefox Developer Edition browser looks to provide an all-in-one debugging toolset for professi

While it’s loosely based around the previous Firefox Aurora builds, it’s not a straight-forward rebrand — it’s closer to the nightly builds, but built for a developer user base with different needs. It also removes a lot of the safeguards that are vital in the consumer browser but that can frustrate developers.

Chromium:

Chromium is the name given to the open-source project and the browser source code released and maintained by the Chromium Project.[7] It is possible to download the source code and build it manually on many platforms. To create Chrome from Chromium, Google takes this source code and adds:[8]

  • A restriction blocking the installation of extensions from anywhere other than the Chrome Web Store[9]
  • Integrated Flash Player[10] (proprietary license and code)
  • Built-in print preview and print system
  • The Google and Google Chrome names (both trademarked)[11][12][13]
  • An auto-update system called GoogleUpdate (some, such as the Debian or Ubuntu community builds of chromium, rely on the package management system of the OS as an alternative)
  • An opt-in option for users to send Google their usage statistics and crash reports
  • RLZ tracking when Chrome is downloaded as part of marketing promotions and distribution partnerships. This transmits information in encoded form to Google, including both when—and from where—Chrome was downloaded. In June 2010, Google confirmed that the RLZ tracking token is not present in versions of Chrome downloaded from the Google website directly, nor in any version of Chromium. The RLZ source code was also made open source at the same time (previously it was proprietary—and although the source is now open the feature was not migrated to Chromium) so that developers can confirm what it is and how it works.[14]

By default, Chromium only supports Vorbis, Theora and WebM codecs for the HTML5 audio and video tags. Google Chrome supports these as well as the patent-encumbered AAC and MP3 codecs. On 11 January 2011, the Chrome Product manager, Mike Jazayeri, announced that Chrome would no longer support the H.264 video format for its HTML5 player.[15] In October 2013 Cisco announced that it was open-sourcing its H.264 codecs and will cover all fees required.[16] As of December 2013, Chrome still supports H.264. Linux distributions that distribute Chromium may add support for other codecs to their customized versions of Chromium.

Gnome Vs Groupon

Recently Groupon announced a product with the same product name as GNOME. Groupon’s product is a tablet based point of sale “operating system for merchants to run their entire operation.” The GNOME community was shocked that Groupon would use our mark for a product so closely related to the GNOME desktop and technology. It was almost inconceivable to us that Groupon, with over $2.5 billion in annual revenue, a full legal team and a huge engineering staff would not have heard of the GNOME project, found our trademark registration using a casual search, or even found our website, but we nevertheless got in touch with them and asked them to pick another name. Not only did Groupon refuse, but it has now filed even more trademark applications (the full list of applications they filed can be found here, here and here). To use the GNOME name for a proprietary software product that is antithetical to the fundamental ideas of the GNOME community, the free software community and the GNU project is outrageous. Please help us fight this huge company as they try to trade on our goodwill and hard earned reputation.

Facebook pays out biggest bug bounty ever, $33,500 after researcher gets ‘keys to the kingdom’

  • Reginaldo Silva, a Brazilian security researcher, found a remote execution flaw in Facebook and was able to perform various functions including coping the /etc/passwd file, getting him a list of the users that exist on the system, and could have changed the URL for the Google OpenID provider, in order to execute MitM attacks on users logging in to Facebook using their Gmail accounts
  • The original flaw was found in September 2012, when the researcher discovered an XXE (XML External Entity) bug in a Drupal blogs OpenID provider
  • After finding the flaw in OpenID, he tried the attack successfully against StackExchange
  • Later he also tried it against Google, while it worked, he was not able to read any files or make any network connections. For this he received his first bug bounty, $500 from Google
  • During the original investigation, he could not find a valid Facebook OpenID endpoint
  • Some time later, while investigating the Facebook password reset system, he discovered they still used OpenID for Gmail users to reset their passwords
  • Using the newly discovered endpoint, he still was not able to launch his attack, because Facebook only communicated with Google, and for the attack to work he needed to communicate with his malicious OpenID provider
  • After more reading of the OpenID spec, he found what he was looking for and was able to cause Facebook to contact his server, parse his malicious XML and cause Facebook’s servers to run code of his choosing
  • From this he was able to get a copy of the /etc/passwd from the server
  • Researcher’s Blog Post
  • Facebook Security Team Blog Post

Security companies remove information about target breach from the Internet

  • One we had previously covered:
  • “On Dec. 18, a malicious software sample was submitted to ThreatExpert.com, a Symantec-owned service. But the public report the service generated vanished. “
  • However, as is often the case with the internet, someone (Krebs ftw) had a copy of the report and posted it
  • “iSight Partners, a Dallas-based cybersecurity company that is working with the U.S. Secret Service, published a series of questions and answers on its website related to the attacks on point-of-sale devices at U.S retailers. That too vanished on Thursday.”
  • “Intel-owned McAfee redacted on Tuesday a blog post from last week that contained technical detail similar to the ThreatExpert.com report”
  • When queried, a Symantec spokeswoman said “we took the initiative to remove it because we didn’t want the information to compromise the ongoing investigation.”
  • Alex Holden, founder of Hold Security, who worked with Brian Krebs on the Adobe breach, said it was the right move for Symantec to pull the report, as attackers might have been able to use the information to compromise other point-of-sale devices at other retailers
  • “I was surprised that this information was posted on the Internet in the first place,” Holden said. “Besides having a Target machine’s name and its IP address, system structure and drive mapping, it discloses a very vital set of credentials setup specifically for exploitation of the device.”
  • As many as six other U.S. companies are believed to be victims of point-of-sale related attacks, where malware intercepts unencrypted card details. So far, only Target and high-end retailer Neiman Marcus have acknowledged the attacks.

Adware vendors buy Chrome Extensions to send ad- and malware-filled updates

  • While Chrome itself is updated automatically by Google, that update process also includes Chrome’s extensions, which are updated by the extension owners.
  • This means that it’s up to the user to decide if the owner of an extension is trustworthy or not, since you are basically giving them permission to push new code out to your browser whenever they feel like it.
  • Ownership of a Chrome extension can be transferred to another party, and users are never informed when an ownership change happens.
  • Malware and adware vendors have caught wind of this and have started showing up at the doors of extension authors, looking to buy their extensions.
  • Once the deal is done and the ownership of the extension is transferred, the new owners can issue an ad-filled update over Chrome’s update service, which sends the adware out to every user of that extension.
  • A first-hand account of this, which was first spotted by OMGChrome, was given by Amit Agarwal, developer of the “Add to Feedly” extension.
  • One morning, the extension author got an e-mail offering “4 figures” for the sale of his Chrome extension. The extension was only about an hour’s worth of work, so Agarwal agreed to the deal, the money was sent over PayPal, and he transferred ownership of the extension to another Google account.
  • A month later, the new extension owners released their first (and so far only) update, which injected adware on all webpages and started redirecting links.
  • This isn’t a one-time event, either. About a month ago, I had a very simple Chrome extension called “Tweet This Page” suddenly transform into an ad-injecting machine and start hijacking Google searches.
  • Google has stated that Chrome’s extension policy is due to change in June 2014. The new policy will require extensions to serve a single purpose.

In Defense of Gnome 3:

– Chris’ Full Disclosure –

  • The majority of my work week recently has been spent in KDE.
  • Chris’ desktop
  • The future for Qt looks bright, and like most geeks, I want to ride the wave and try to live in the future.
  • Gnome Extensions concern me in the long run. Some important functionality for me in Gnome 3 is provided via extensions. The long term viability of that is quesentonalbe.
  • Every time an extension works, it feels like a tiny and temporary merical.

– Summation of Common Gnome 3 Complaints –

– Gnome Developers Step Into the Spotlight –

William Jon McCann, Files developer:

Someone smart once said “Linux is just a kernel”. I couldn’t agree more. But in this age, it is going to take more than adding on a few tools to make a compelling operating system. It is going to take thinking seriously about the end result and making hard decisions to get there. A result that I believe the world needs more now than ever. A real choice for freedom. A choice for everyone. Time to step out of the dark ages. We, the technological elite, have been holding on to freedom too long. Effectively preventing others from enjoying it. Perpetuated by hostile dogma like the “unix way”. We need to be clear. Those days are over. And it is time to share.

Sri Ramkrishna, Tizen dev, long time Gnome Contributor:

Changes to Nautilus have been met with universal unhappiness – the changes that have been made have made a lot of people unhappy. There just hasn’t been anybody I’ve met both who are fans of GNOME 3 and critics alike who like what the current nautilus have become. People have either been silent or have encouraged the use of the 3.6 fork of Nautilus.

People have really been down on GNOME designers. While they have made some great community outreach, specifically Allen Day and Jakub Steiner have always been available to talk about their designs. Regardless, there is always this sense that whatever feedback is given will be ignored that everything is inevitable.

It’s very important that we are up front on regressions. The gnome-terminal incident is a good example of this. There is no doubt that transparency is a popular feature in terminals.

I will ask module maintainers to be upfront to the release team when there is a significant regression like this. In turn, release team needs to tell the engagement team as well so that we are also ready to talk about it when it comes up.

The conclusion is, we are creating a product. But we need to act like we are creating a product. That will require closer teamwork between the various teams that we have before. I’ll talk about this in another post. But we don’t have everything set up for that. We have gaps, and they should be addressed.

  • SUID (Set owner User ID up on execution) is a special type of file permissions given to a file.

  • Normally in Linux/Unix when a program runs, it inherits access permissions from the logged in user. SUID is defined as giving temporary permissions to a user to run a program/file with the permissions of the file owner rather that the user who runs it.

Matt’s Howto:

Despite valiant attempts in making the iPhone music compatible with distros such as Ubuntu (or Linux distros in general), libimobiledevice has met with limited success in music syncing. Worse yet, Ubuntu One music sync isn’t quite stable enough to use on a regular basis yet. Therefore during the segment I made two very different recommendations – either buy an Android phone (best). Of if you’re in a contract like I am, consider buying a great MP3 player such as one from iRiver or Sandisk. If however, you want an MP3 player that is in fact, using Apple tech. Then I’d suggest you head over to eBay and look for this query: “ipod a1199”. Buy it at auction, you can get this for a great price.

So how does one make this work? If you remember from the segment, I recommend using Gparted to make sure the iPod is completely wiped. But follow these directions to make sure you don’t delete something needed, like a hidden partition.
gp

1) Plugin the iPod to your computer, close any software or dialogs that appear.
2) Assuming you have gparted already installed, run the program.
3) Don’t worry about deleting your active partitions, as they will be locked. But if you run a dual-boot PC, be mindful before deleting anything.
4) Look to the upper right, select the /dev/ pull down menu. You will be selecting the dev device with the least amount of space. In my case, it was 1.89 GiB.
5) You will see either two or three partitions available, one of them is FAT32. Ignoring the others, select the FAT32 partition.
6) With the FAT32 partition right clicked and selected, choose unmount. This frees up the partition for changes.
7) Right click the partition again, and select format to> FAT32.
8) Click the apply button - aka the green checkmark at the top of the menu. Then click apply.
9) Disconnect the iPod, then allow the iPod to reboot itself. When completed, it will appear with a dialog asking you to choose your default language.
10) Now plug the iPod back into the PC.
11) Choose to open the iPod with Banshee.
12) On the bottom left, you will see the device has appeared. As per the segment, you can right click it and give it a better name if you like.
13) Left clicking on the device, the main screen dialog presents you with the option of setting up how the sync preferences work.
I recommend keeping things set to manual. This simply means the checkbox for Sync when first plugged in, remains unchecked.
14) Select the music sync preference, then choose one of the following:

Sync from entire library – if you want all songs synced. This most likely, will not include existing playlists.

or

Sync from “some playlist name” – this will include only the music from the selected playlist.

With the option selected, look to the upper right, then click on Sync. During this process, don’t disconnect.

Problem solving:

“Wow Matt, that was awesome! I just hosed my iPod and it’s not disconnecting! It’s frozen at 23%. ”

Answer:

Don’t worry, just unplug it and use Gparted to reset the iPod as described above. No harm no foul.

Remember, I recommend using a Linux friendly device like an Android phone or even better, one of the Sandisk/iRiver devices above. They offer less frustration with Apple specific databases. But using an older iPod nano like this is a cheaper alternative.

Kubuntu & Ubuntu 11.10 Review:
  • Ubuntu 11.10 Finds it self in a hard spot. The steady, and very needed improvements in Unity cost them in overall “on the box” bullet points for Ubuntu. Overall, the end result of this release is something that feels much better built than 11.04 did, but there’s no buzz term for you to hang that hat on.
  • Chris suspects this could be an ongoing perception issue for Ubuntu. They have additional work to do on Unity, and that will undoubtly take a great deal of their developer focus. This meas other fancy buzz features might get missed.
  • Perhaps Ubuntu could name, Unity releases. “Ubuntu 12.04 featuring Unity 3”. Then they could focus on all the improvements in that version of Unity that ships with that Ubuntu release.
  • Linux 3.0
  • Gnome 3.2
