Hi guys, I found a cool project run by castrol edge. They are racing two cars on a race track with the drivers wearing virtual reality helmets. Cameras and sensors on the cars feed information into an Ubuntu laptop inside the car and generate the VR display. Thanks for producing the great content that gets me through a 300 mile a week bus commute to school.

Mozilla Wants To Split Off Its Thunderbird Email/Chat Client, Says Mitchell Baker Memo

“I believe Thunderbird should would thrive best by separating itself from reliance on Mozilla development systems and in some cases, Mozilla technology,” Baker wrote in her open memo, posted on Mozilla’s public governance forum. “The current setting isn’t stable, and we should start actively looking into how we can transition in an orderly way to a future where Thunderbird and Firefox are un-coupled.”

Baker, who says she uses Thunderbird to organize vast parts of her life, now believes that the email client will thrive best if it does not rely on Mozilla for development resources and, in some cases, on Mozilla technology. “The current setting isn’t stable, and we should start actively looking into how we can transition in an orderly way to a future where Thunderbird and Firefox are un-coupled,” she wrote in Mozilla’s public governance forum on Monday.

Federal courts should require Apple to unlock encrypted data because the operating system is “licensed, not sold,” to customers, the Justice Department argued in a reply brief in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.

But suddenly he doesn’t seem crazy anymore. After the Snowden revelations, and all the other major and minor privacy breaches of the past few years, his paranoia now seems justified — even rational:

Ubuntu 15.10 Review

  • Linux kernel 4.2

  • Stateless persistent network interface names are now being used

  • GNOME packages have been upgraded to version 3.16.X

  • Upstream GNOME scrollbars are now being used.

  • GCC 5 and Python 3.x

  • Support for the Steam Controller when you install Steam from the repo. The Steam installer package takes care of setting requisite udev and uinput rules and permissions.

  • Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) Ready For Download ~ Web Upd8: Ubuntu / Linux blog

Since the Linux Kernel version used in the previous Ubuntu release (3.19 in Ubuntu 15.04), there are quite a few changes, including a new AMDGPU kernel driver for supporting recent and near-term Radeon GPUs, Intel Broxton support, F2FS (Flash-Friendly File System) encryption support, support for Ext4 encryption, experimental support for managing clustered raid arrays, live patching the kernel code (aimed at applying security fixes without rebooting), dm-crypt CPU scalability improvements and more.

Ubuntu 15.10 Flavors Now Available for Download

Yep, downloads for Ubuntu’s colorful array of community flavors, including perennially popular Ubuntu MATE and Ubuntu GNOME, are now live.

Unity 7.3.3 Features

Unity, the default desktop shell, has been handed a batch of small fixes and usability improvements for Ubuntu 15.10.

For example, you can now drag and drop apps from the Unity Dash to the desktop to create shortcuts, and navigate through Dash results using keyboard navigation keys.

The Unity Dash search box text and BFB tooltip no longer make mention of ‘online sources’ when you have online source searching set to ‘disabled’ under System Settings > Privacy.

Other changes in Unity 7.3.3:

  • You can now drag and drop apps from the Dash to the desktop to create shortcuts
  • Page up/down keyboard navigation works as scroll in the Dash
  • Dash title & BFB tooltip is updated based on your privacy settings
  • Session exit buttons now have a click effect
  • Fix to prevent ‘shutdown’ of computer when screen is locked
  • Active app icons now show unfolded when launcher accordion triggered
  • Fix for full screen menubar
  • Fixes issues with ‘show desktop’ that caused window decoration for two windows of same app to vanish
  • Dash: Non-expandable category headers skipped in keyboard navigation
  • Dash: Non-expandable category headers are no longer highlighted on mouse over
  • Dash: screenreader and KeyNav fixes
  • New setting to control the show-now delay (when pressing Alt key)
  • Logic tweak to stop adjacent menu opening when moving from an indicator icon to its menu

Ubuntu Make

Ubuntu Make, a command-line utility that makes installing popular developer tools easier on Ubuntu, now supports even more platforms, frameworks and services, including a full Android development environment.

Ubuntu 15.10: Wily Werewolf – not too hairy, not too scary •

What you won’t find in this release are any major changes. It used to be that the x.10 releases were the time when things got experimental, sometimes for the better, as in the case of the Unity shell, which became the only option in 11.10 (technically Unity first showed up in 11.04, but that version still offered a GNOME fallback) and sometimes for the worse, as in the case of Amazon search results which first showed up in 12.10. This release has nothing like that.

What’s new in 6 Ubuntu 15.10 offshoot ‘flavors,’ from Kubuntu to Ubuntu GNOME

Kubuntu, Ubuntu GNOME, Ubuntu MATE, and other Ubuntu “flavors” with different desktops all saw their own changes and improvements.

Ubuntu MATE for the Raspberry Pi 2

Martin Wimpress and Rohith Madhavan have made an Ubuntu MATE image
for the Raspberry Pi 2 which you can download or build yourself.

Ubuntu 15.10 Wily Werewolf may lack the bite of its namesake but there is still some nifty new changes shipping inside it.

The Unity 8 Desktop Preview in LXC is the new Unity 8 desktop shell running on the Mir display technology using an LXC container so users of released Ubuntu versions can use the latest versions of Unity 8 and Mir. The idea is that the LXC will be the latest development version of Ubuntu with the latest packages. Also, a user can log in to the Unity 8 LXC session from LightDM just as they would any normal session.

  • [Ubuntu 15.10 Screenshot Tour](https://www.linuxscreenshots.org/?release=Ubuntu 15.10)

Codenamed ‘Wily Werewolf’, 15.10 continues Ubuntu’s proud tradition of integrating the latest and greatest open source technologies into a high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution. The team has been hard at work through this cycle, introducing new features and fixing bugs. Under the hood, there have been updates to many core packages, including a new 4.2-based kernel, a switch to gcc-5, and much more. Ubuntu Desktop has seen incremental improvements, with newer versions of GTK and Qt, updates to major packages like Firefox and LibreOffice, and stability improvements to Unity.

“In 15.10, Unity8 is demonstrating Canonical’s convergence vision as a tech preview. Users can log into a Unity8 session on the desktop, experience the new features, and cleanly revert to the default Unity7 experience. The feature set of Unity8 now includes the important windowed mode for Desktop users, which allows users to multi-task between multiple running apps. Mobile apps such as the Music player and the Deko email client have added support to cover small form-factor devices and large screen Desktops. Ubuntu 15.10 also has improved supports for developers of traditional apps that want to bring these apps into Unity8,” say the Ubuntu developers.

Kubuntu’s Release Manager Calls It Quits

Now that Kubuntu 15.10 shipped yesterday, he’s moving on and will no longer be serving as the Kubuntu release manager. Instead, Riddell is just going to get involved with upstream KDE development more as he no longer wants to be involved under the Ubuntu/Canonical umbrella.

The release manager of the Kubuntu project has stepped down after the launch of Kubuntu 15.10. The information was made public by Jonathan Riddell himself on the official Kubuntu website.

Below are links to the past reports detailing the donations and disbursements from this program.

Canonical Says Ubuntu Phones Will Run Any Linux App on Open Source OS

This week, Ubuntu developer Michael Hall posted proof of Canonical’s progress toward full Ubuntu convergence in the form of a screenshot from an Ubuntu-based Nexus 4 running desktop apps, including GIMP and Firefox.

Hall emphasized that the software in the image remains very much under development. “Lots of work still to do to make these useful, but it’s great to be able to show visible progress,” he wrote.

After Hall posted the screenshot, Softpedia confirmed with him that Canonical’s plan is indeed to make it possible to run any Linux application on Ubuntu.

Why I’m breaking up with Google Chrome

When Chrome debuted for the first time in 2008 it was the fastest browser on the block. It was light, nimble, extensible and easy to use compared to Firefox, which had become slow and cumbersome.

In the past few years, I’ve stuck with it, even as it became a memory hog, unstable and a major drain on battery life.

I was in denial. But now I have to admit it — the stable, snappy Chrome is a distant memory. As it has grown in popularity, it’s steadily got worse.

What we’d like to see in iOS 9 at WWDC next month | Ars Technica

We’ve assembled a small wishlist of features for iOS 9, with a focus on the smaller tweaks we hope Apple can focus on now that it’s not pulling up all the carpets and replacing all the fixtures. Some of these are more likely to be incorporated than others. Some have been on our wishlist for literally years. But all of them would be welcome improvements.

Google Now will one day be able to work with information from all of the apps you use. Expanding on the current pilot program that works with 40 third-party services, the plan is to offer an open API in the future, that anyone can build into their apps.

Microsoft to Invest in Rogue Android Startup Cyanogen – Digits – WSJ

People familiar with the matter say Microsoft is putting money into Cyanogen, which is building a version of the Android mobile-operating system outside of Google’s auspices.

Microsoft would be a minority investor in a roughly $70 million round of equity financing that values Cyanogen in the high hundreds of millions, one of the people said. The person said the financing round could grow with other strategic investors that have expressed interest in Cyanogen because they’re also eager to diminish Google’s control over Android. The identity of the other potential investors couldn’t be learned.

Prosecutors Trace $13.4M in Bitcoins From the Silk Road to Ulbricht’s Laptop

In Ulbricht’s trial Thursday, former FBI special agent Ilhwan Yum described how he traced 3,760 bitcoin transactions over 12 months ending in late August 2013 from servers seized in the Silk Road investigation to Ross Ulbricht’s Samsung 700z laptop, which the FBI seized at the time of his arrest in October of that year. In all, he followed more than 700,000 bitcoins along the public ledger of bitcoin transactions, known as the blockchain, from the marketplace to what seemed to be Ulbricht’s personal wallets. Based on exchange rates at the time of each transaction, Yum calculated that the transferred coins were worth a total of $13.4 million.

FBI created fake Seattle Times Web page to nab bomb-threat suspect

The FBI in Seattle created a fake news story on a bogus Seattle Times web page to plant software in the computer of a suspect in a series of bomb threats to Lacey’s Timberline High School in 2007, according to documents obtained by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) in San Francisco.

The deception was publicized Monday when Christopher Soghoian, the principal technologist for the American Civil Liberties Union in Washington, D.C., revealed it on Twitter.

The EFF documents reveal that the FBI dummied up a story with an Associated Press byline about the Thurston County bomb threats with an email link “in the style of The Seattle Times,” including details about subscriber and advertiser information.

The link was sent to the suspect’s MySpace account. When the suspect clicked on the link, the hidden FBI software sent his location and Internet Protocol information to the agents. A juvenile suspect was identified and arrested June 14.

The revelation brought a sharp response from the newspaper.

“We are outraged that the FBI, with the apparent assistance of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, misappropriated the name of The Seattle Times to secretly install spyware on the computer of a crime suspect,” said Seattle Times Editor Kathy Best.

“Not only does that cross a line, it erases it,” she said.

“Our reputation and our ability to do our job as a government watchdog are based on trust. Nothing is more fundamental to that trust than our independence — from law enforcement, from government, from corporations and from all other special interests,” Best said. “The FBI’s actions, taken without our knowledge, traded on our reputation and put it at peril.”

MCX Confirms Retailer Exclusivity for CurrentC Mobile Payments, but No Fines for Leaving Consortium

Much of the Apple news in recent days has centered around Apple Pay and what Tim Cook referred to on Monday as a “skirmish” in which several retailers backing a competing mobile payments initiative known as CurrentC have shut down NFC payment functionality in their stores to prevent customer use of Apple Pay, Google Wallet, and other similar services.

Numerous sources have indicated that retailers backing CurrentC are contractually prohibited from accepting alternative forms of mobile payments, and sources told The New York Times that retailers breaking those contracts would “face steep fines.”

Importantly, if a merchant decides to stop working with MCX, there are no fines.

FTC sues AT&T over ‘deceptive’ throttling of unlimited data customers | The Verge

The Federal Trade Commission is suing AT&T because the second-largest US carrier throttles speeds of its unlimited data customers, a policy that the FTC describes as “deceptive” and “unfair.” In a press release, the FTC said AT&T has “misled millions of its smartphone customers” by slowing down their data speeds after they’ve used up a certain amount of data in a single month. AT&T has failed to make its throttling policies clear enough, according to the complaint. “The issue here is simple: ‘unlimited’ means unlimited,” said FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez.

Update 11:15 AM PT: AT&T has given a statement to MacRumors in response to the FTC’s “baffling” complaint, stating that the allegations are “baseless” and that it has been “completely transparent” with customers.

“The FTC’s allegations are baseless and have nothing to do with the substance of our network management program. It’s baffling as to why the FTC would choose to take this action against a company that, like all major wireless providers, manages its network resources to provide the best possible service to all customers, and does it in a way that is fully transparent and consistent with the law and our contracts.

“We have been completely transparent with customers since the very beginning. We informed all unlimited data-plan customers via bill notices and a national press release that resulted in nearly 2,000 news stories, well before the program was implemented. In addition, this program has affected only about 3% of our customers, and before any customer is affected, they are also notified by text message.”

Microsoft borrows Mac trackpad gestures for Windows 10 | The Verge

n a keynote speech at TechEd Europe today, Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore demonstrated new trackpad features that will soon be available to Windows 10 testers. “In the past touch pads on Windows have really been done very differently because OEMs do them,” explained Belfiore. Microsoft introduced precision trackpads with the help of Intel in Windows 8 to improve the hardware situation, and now the focus is on gestures in software. “With Windows 10 we’re adding support for power users in a touch pad, where multiple finger gestures — which all of you power users learn — can make you really efficient.”

The new gestures include a three finger swipe down action to minimize all active Windows and three finger swipe up to bring them back. An interesting addition is the ability to use a three finger swipe up gesture to activate the new Task View feature of Windows 10. Not only does Task View look like OS X’s Mission Control (Exposé) feature, the three finger swipe up is the same gesture. Microsoft is also borrowing the three finger swipe left and right to activate switching between apps, something Apple uses to move between fullscreen Mac applications.

NUC Linux Server

Intel Nuc D54250WYKH

The Intel NUC D54250WYKH has many useful features, including four USB 3.0 ports, an infrared sensor, a headphone/microphone jack, Mini HDMI*, and Mini DisplayPort* video interfaces, and extra space to accommodate 2.5-inch HDD or SSD drives to support a variety of home or small office usages.

  • The chubby NUC has room for a 2.5 Inch SSD which was great for my OS and still has the standard PCI Mini storage slot

  • Low noise profile, not silent. But very quiet, about three feet away I can’t hear it.

Performance of the NUC

The power consumption at the wall was measured with the display being driven through the mini-HDMI port. In the graphs below, we compare the idle and load power of the D54250WYK with other low power PCs evaluated before. For load power consumption, we ran Furmark 1.12.0 and Prime95 v27.9 together.

Moving Plex Media Server to another server

1 . Set up coming UID and GIDs between your NFS and app server.
2. When migrating, try to keep the same file paths. IE: /mnt/nfs was where I had the media nfs mount on the previous box.
3. Setup your fstab, when possible use systemd to mount so the mount is network aware.

Mount using /etc/fstab with systemd

Another method is using the systemd automount service. This is a better option than _netdev, because it remounts the network device quickly when the connection is broken and restored. As well, it solves the problem from autofs, see the example below:

/etc/fstab

servername:/home /mountpoint/on/client nfs users,noauto,x-systemd.automount,x-systemd.device-timeout=10,timeo=14,noatime 0 0

**Tip: **noauto above will not mount the NFS share until it is accessed: use auto for it to be available immediately.
If you have any issues with the mount failing due to the network not being up/available, enable NetworkManager-wait-online.service: this will ensure that network.target has all the links available prior to being active.

  1. Stop Plex on your current server.
  2. Copy your old Plex Media Server configs to the new server:
  • In general, the location for the various Linux versions of Plex Media Server will be found under:

    $PLEX_HOME/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/

Make sure that the directories and contents are all owned by plex:plex.

  • DVD Order numbering for returning the results in DVD order instead of Air-By-Date order.
  • Improved Failed handling code for shows.
  • DupeKey/DupeScore for NZBGet 12+
  • Searches both TheTVDB.com, TVRage.com and AniDB.net for shows, seasons, episodes
  • Importing of existing video files now allows you to choose which indexer you wish to have SickBeard search its show info from.
  • Your tvshow.nfo files are now tagged with a indexer key so that SickBeard can easily tell if the shows info comes from TheTVDB or TVRage.
  • Sports shows are now able to be searched for..

Moving btsync between servers

imgurlArea 11-10-14 15_22_16.png

  1. Copy down your paths and keys
  2. Shutdown btsync on your old system
  3. Depending on your version you need to remove the .sync folder, or the .Sync folders. Newest versionf of btsync will asking you if you want “take owner ship”.
  4. “Add Folder” and put your folder path in.
  5. Edit the sync listing and click “view key” then click update key.
    imgurlArea 11-10-14 15_23_46.png
  6. Post your orginal key you copied down early in. Now btsync will connect up to your peers.

Hey Chris and Matt, I thought I’d share this cool program BitHammer if you haven’t already heard of it. If you haven’t BitHammer searches out and bans BitTorrent users on your local sub-net. That means if you travel and work (Ohio LinuxFest), often using shared Wi-Fi. This is nice because many people have been plagued by rogue BitTorrent users who’ve crept onto these public hostpots either with a stolen/cracked password, or who lie (and the Wi-Fi owners) about it.

Amazon announces massive Kindle refresh including new ‘Kindle Voyage’ and $99 Kindle Fire HD tablet | 9to5Google

Following a big day of Apple news, Kindle has unleashed a massive refresh of its Kindle lines, including three refreshed Kindles and—interestingly—one completely new Kindle model. The lineup includes the company’s new flagship e-reader dubbed Kindle Voyage, a new entry-level Kindle that now packs a touch screen, an updated Kindle Fire HDX, and a new Kindle Fire HD, which is starting at just $99.

The Kindle Voyage, which now sits at the top of the lineup, sports a brand new 6-inch e-ink display and what the company is calling “Pagepress,” which replaces the previous hardware buttons and allows you to change pages by simply squeezing on the bezel around the screen. In terms of dimensions, the device comes in at an impressive 7.6 mm thin and weighs in at right around 6.4 ounces. The device starts at $199, and that’s the version that ships with ads and lacks 3G.

Additionally, Amazon also announced the new bottom-of-the-line Kindle, which now comes standard with a touch screen as well as a processor that’s supposedly around 20 percent faster than the previous entry level model. This device will be the most affordable of the bunch, coming in at $79 and up ($99 if you want to ditch the “special offers”).

Amazon releases Fire OS 4: Adds Firefly to tablets, integrates cloud | ZDNet

  • Fire OS 4 lands with deeper cloud integration, an updated user interface, and profiles for multiple accounts — including individualized preferences for email, social, and settings.

  • Based on Android 4.4 KitKat, Amazon built Fire OS 4 on top us. (Just in time for L to ship soon)

  • Better battery life with Smart Suspend: Amazon touted Smart Suspend as the new way to save battery life. It sets up a device-specific profile over time to proactively turn off wireless functionality, delivering up to 25 percent more battery life, Amazon says.

  • Advanced Streaming and Prediction: Dubbed “ASAP,” devices running Fire OS 4 can now predict which movies and TV content you may want to watch next, while caching them in the background.

  • Free cloud-based photo storage: Amazon said Fire OS 4 users now have free and “unlimited” photo storage — including full-resolution snaps — in Amazon’s cloud. Photos are uploaded wirelessly.

Apple Confirms HealthKit Bug, Promises Fix by End of September – Mac Rumors

While details on the issue are still unknown, Apple has confirmed to Tim Bradshaw of Financial Times that it has discovered a “bug” in HealthKit that will require a software update to fix. Unfortunately, Apple is not necessarily promising an immediate turnaround on the fix, saying only that the company is aiming to “have HealthKit apps available by the end of the month”.

Apple will no longer unlock most iPhones, iPads for police, even with search warrants – The Washington Post

The key is the encryption that Apple mobile devices automatically put in place when a user selects a passcode, making it difficult for anyone who lacks that passcode to access the information within, including photos, e-mails and recordings. Apple once kept possession of encryption keys that unlocked devices for legally binding police requests, but will no longer do so for iOS 8, it said in a new guide for law enforcement.

“Unlike our competitors, Apple cannot bypass your passcode and therefore cannot access this data,” Apple said on its Web site. “So it’s not technically feasible for us to respond to government warrants for the extraction of this data from devices in their possession running iOS 8.”

Digia spins off Qt as subsidiary · LinuxGizmos.com

Digia has spun off a subsidiary called “The Qt Company” to unify Qt’s commercial and open source efforts, and debuted a low-cost plan for mobile developers.

Now Qt is its own company, or at least a wholly owned subsidiary under Digia. Finland-based Digia has largely been involved with the commercial versions of Qt since it acquired the platform from Nokia in 2012, but it has also sponsored the community Qt Project as a relatively separate project. Now, both efforts are being unified “under one roof” at The Qt Company and the new QT.io website, says Digia. Meanwhile, Digia will focus on its larger enterprise software business.

According to Qt, the number of Qt developers has grown “exponentially” to about 800,000, spurred on by the 2013 Qt 5.2 release, which added Qt for Android and iOS ports. Within six weeks, Qt 5.2 was downloaded 500,000 times, and it reached one million downloads only four months after the release. Another one million downloads have occurred since the July release of Qt 5.3, says the company.

DOJ Proposal Would Let FBI Hack Into Computers Overseas With Little Oversight | Techdirt

JustSecurity, alerts us to a rather frightening proposal from the Justice Department that would enable law enforcement to hack into the computers of people who are trying to be anonymous online. At issue is that current rules basically would extend the powers granted for terrorism investigations to everyday criminal investigations, concerning specifically the DOJ/FBI’s ability to hack into computers. In the past, judges could issue warrants for such computer hacking if the target was known to be located in the same district. But the proposed change would wipe out that limitation, and basically give the DOJ/FBI the power to get approval for hacking into a much broader range of computers. Without the geographical limitation, there’s concern about just how broadly this new power would be (ab)used.

Under the DOJ’s proposal, unilateral state action will be the rule, not the exception, in the event an anonymous target “prove[s] to be outside the United States.” The reason is simple: without knowing the target location before the fact, there is no way to provide notice (or obtain consent from) a host country until after its sovereignty has been encroached.

YaCy is a free search engine that anyone can use to build a search portal for their intranet or to help search the public internet. When contributing to the world-wide peer network, the scale of YaCy is limited only by the number of users in the world and can index billions of web pages. It is fully decentralized, all users of the search engine network are equal, the network does not store user search requests and it is not possible for anyone to censor the content of the shared index. We want to achieve freedom of information through a free, distributed web search which is powered by the world’s users.

Questions

  • What’s the key reason you believe decentralized search is important?

  • How does YaCy help combat censorship?

  • Can I use YaCy on my school/work network to index all of the material on our intranet?

  • I want to run YaCy on a VPS, can it be configured to crawl faster than my home PC since it has a faster connection?

  • How would I know that some YaCy machine in the globe does not collect all the requests it gets?

  • Could YaCy be used to index the TOR network?

  • And more in show, not documented here.

openSUSE 13.1 Review:

System76

Brought to you by: System76

Install:

  • Nice to have a straight to install, and an installer that gives you room to get technical, but has sane defaults.
  • Live CDs for Gnome and KDE are also available.
  • Had trouble getting my bootloader to install on an alternative drive.

Desktop:

  • Updater integration/plasma widget is bad ass

  • Display configuration now handled through KDE settings, not YaST.

  • YaST once again looks at home under KDE or Gnome.

  • Update alert info does not seem to be integrated into the XFCE desktop, but brilliantly integrated into KDE and supports Gnome Notifications too.

Steam Test:

  • A couple games did not work. But some of my favorites did.

Overall:

Fun fact: openSUSE has a new release every eight months, and there are only three per version: .1, .2 and .3. So a .1 release comes out every other November. openSUSE 13.1 promises greater stability

Round-Up:

  • Linux 3.11
  • Work done on 64bit ARM support.
  • 32bit ARM support has been heavily improved and a special Raspberry Pi build for openSUSE is available.
  • End users can now mount Amazon s3 buckets as local file system.
  • Samba 4.1
  • systemd 208
  • YaST has been ported to Ruby
  • This release has been selected for Evergreen support extending its life cycle to 3 years.

Cinnamon 2.0 Review

System76

Brought to you by: System76

Check out System76 on G+

This new version will be featured in Linux Mint 16 “Petra” planned for the end of November and will then be backported to LMDE and Linux Mint 13 LTS.

Cinnamon 2.0 represents 5 months of development and 856 commits from 28 developers. It features a lot of bug fixes but also brand new features and many improvements.

Edge-Snapping

Edge-Snapping was inspired by the Snap functionality of Xbox One. It is similar to Edge-Tiling (the window sticks to the edge or corner of the screen, occupies half of the screen and can be resized) but with one key difference: Maximized windows do not cover snapped windows.

The New User Applet

A new user applet is introduced in Cinnamon 2.0 to let you easily perform most session/account related tasks (leaving, switching users, disabling notifications, accessing settings…etc).

Better User Management

System administrators now have access to the “Users and Groups” configuration tool which allows them not only to administrate users but also groups.

One major piece I will be tackling is making sure we in the Red Hat desktop team work even closer with the Fedora community to bring forth some great improvements to Fedora and created an even more integrated and seamless experience for those wanting to use the Fedora desktop. This ranges from working with the Fedora team on a new software installer to working on getting Wayland ready for deployment in Fedora.
