Lifting the lid on Sednit: A closer look at the software it uses

  • Security experts at ESET have released the final two parts of their new research into the operations of the notorious Sednit hacking group.
  • The Sednit gang, also known as APT28, Fancy Bear, Pawn Storm and Sofacy, are highly experienced, and have been engaged in criminal activity since at least 2004. They have developed sophisticated attacks that bypass the typical network security at compromised organizations.
  • In parts two and three of their research, entitled En Route with Sednit: Observing the Comings and Goings and En Route with Sednit: A Mysterious Downloader respectively ESET’s threat analysts have taken a closer look at the software used by Sednit to spy on its targets and steal confidential information.
  • Sednit’s espionage toolkit is only deployed on targets deemed interesting to the hacking group after a period of reconnaissance.
  • The toolkit has three main components, made up of two spying backdoors (SEDRECO and XAGENT), and a network tool named XTUNNEL.
  • “Deploying both spying backdoors at the same time allows them to remain in contact if one of them becomes detected.”
  • Once in place, the SEDRECO backdoor trojan provides its remote operators with a variety of functions – including the ability to read and write files, turn on keylogging to furtively capture a user’s keypresses (and no doubt passwords), scour the victim computer’s hard drives and map network resources.
  • ESET’s research has further discovered that SEDRECO contains the capability to run external plugins, downloaded and executed as requested by a command-and-control (C&C) server under the hackers’ control.
  • A SEDRECO plugin identified by the researchers was found to share code with a module used by XAGENT, the other backdoor utilized by the Sednit gang.
  • XAGENT can exfiltrate information from compromised computers via HTTP and email, working alongside other components in the toolkit including USBSTEALER, which attempts to steal data from air-gapped computers.
  • During their investigations, ESET researchers were able to retrieve the complete Xagent source code intended to work under GNU/Linux operating system.
  • Although versions of XAGENT have been seen for Windows, Linux and iOS, ESET’s team of researchers believe that it would be surprising if there has not also been a version of XAGENT created for other operating systems, including Android.
  • The well-designed XAGENT malware is comprised of a series of modules providing varying functionalities, and the samples examined by ESET’s researchers indicate that the Sednit hacking gang adapts each attack for specific targets. This also, of course, avoids the risk of exposing all of XAGENT’s code to security researchers.
  • XTUNNEL, the network proxy tool used by the Sednit group to relay network traffic between a C&C server on the internet and infected computers on their local networks.
  • The researchers say that significant resources have been put into the development of XTUNNEL, SEDRECO and XAGENT, as they describe in En Route with Sednit: Observing the Comings and Goings:
  • “In order to perform its espionage activities, the Sednit group mainly relies on two backdoors, Xagent and Sedreco, which were intensively developed over the past years. Similarly, notable effort has been invested into Xtunnel, in order to pivot in a stealthy way. Overall, these three applications should be a primary focus to anyone wanting to understand and detect the Sednit group’s activities.”
  • The final focus of ESET researchers’ deep dive in the Sednit group is a special downloader called DOWNDELPH.
  • DOWNDELPH, which gets its name from being written in the Delphi programming language, is used in hacks orchestrated by the Sednit group to deploy the previously mentioned XAGENT and SEDRECO onto infected computers.
  • Once in place, DOWNDELPH downloads a configuration file from the internet, and fetches payloads from a series of command & control (C&C) servers.
  • The use of rootkit/bootkit technology to hide the activities of the Sednit group and the small number of deployments suggests one thing: this group of attackers wanted to do everything they could to avoid being noticed.

The chinese manufacturer vows to recall IoT devices used in attack

  • “A Chinese electronics firm pegged by experts as responsible for making many of the components leveraged in last week’s massive attack that disrupted Twitter and dozens of popular Web sites has vowed to recall some of its vulnerable products, even as it threatened legal action against this publication and others for allegedly tarnishing the company’s brand.”
  • How effective a recall will be is hard to say, since most of the devices were sold rebranded by other companies, not by the manufacturer directly
  • The major flaw with these devices is that the passwords that allow access via SSH cannot be changed, and their presence is not even visible from the web interface that most users are expected to use.
  • “I interviewed researchers at Flashpoint who discovered that one of the default passwords sought by machines infected with Mirai — username: root and password: xc3511 — is embedded in a broad array of white-labeled DVR and IP camera electronics boards made by a Chinese company called XiongMai Technologies. These components are sold downstream to vendors who then use them in their own products.”
  • “The scary part about IoT products that include XiongMai’s various electronics components, Flashpoint found, was that while users could change the default credentials in the devices’ Web-based administration panel, the password is hardcoded into the device firmware and the tools needed to disable it aren’t present.”
  • “Mirai is a huge disaster for the Internet of Things,” the manufacturer said in a separate statement emailed to journalists. “XM have to admit that our products also suffered from hacker’s break-in and illegal use.”
  • “At the same time, the Chinese electronics firm said that in September 2015 it issued a firmware fix for vulnerable devices, and that XiongMai hardware shipped after that date should not by default be vulnerable.”
  • “Since then, XM has set the device default Telnet off to avoid the hackers to connect,” the company said. “In other words, this problem is absent at the moment for our devices after Sep 2015, as Hacker cannot use the Telnet to access our devices.”
  • Additional Coverage:
  • In the meantime, it raises questions about how consumers can try to protect themselves
  • Senator Prods Federal Agencies on IoT Mess
  • “The co-founder of the newly launched Senate Cybersecurity Caucus is pushing federal agencies for possible solutions and responses to the security threat from insecure “Internet of Things” (IoT) devices, such as the network of hacked security cameras and digital video recorders that were reportedly used to help bring about last Friday’s major Internet outages.”
  • “In letters to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Virginia Senator Mark Warner (D) called the proliferation of insecure IoT devices a threat to resiliency of the Internet.”
  • “Manufacturers today are flooding the market with cheap, insecure devices, with few market incentives to design the products with security in mind, or to provide ongoing support,” Warner wrote to the agencies. “And buyers seem unable to make informed decisions between products based on their competing security features, in part because there are no clear metrics.”
  • “Because the producers of these insecure IoT devices currently are insulated from any standards requirements, market feedback, or liability concerns, I am deeply concerned that we are witnessing a ‘tragedy of the commons’ threat to the continued functioning of the internet, as the security so vital to all internet users remains the responsibility of none. Further, buyers have little recourse when, despite their best efforts, security failures occur”
  • Then some serious questions are raised, about interference with traffic
  • “In the FCC’s Open Internet Order, the Commission suggested that ISPs could take such steps only when addressing ‘traffic that constitutes a denial-of-service attack on specific network infrastructure elements,’” Warner wrote in his missive to the FCC. “Is it your agency’s opinion that the Mirai attack has targeted ‘specific network infrastructure elements’ to warrant a response from ISPs?”
  • “I have been asked by several reporters over the past few days whether I think government has a role to play in fixing the IoT mess. Personally, I do not believe there has ever been a technology challenge that was best served by additional government regulation.”
  • “However, I do believe that the credible threat of government regulation is very often what’s needed to spur the hi-tech industry into meaningful action and self-regulation. And that process usually starts with inquiries like these. So, here’s hoping more lawmakers in Congress can get up to speed quickly on this vitally important issue.”
  • Quote I saw on twitter the other day: “In a relatively short time we’ve taken a system built to resist destruction by nuclear weapons and made it vulnerable to toasters.”

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS brings big changes to the Linux desktop

The Ubuntu desktop has seen very little change since Ubuntu 14.04 LTS was released two years ago. That’s about to change with today’s launch of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS—code-named “Xenial Xerus”—which brings big changes and welcome polish to the classic Unity 7 desktop.

Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 LTS launches today with the GNOME 3.18 desktop environment.

According to the announcement, release highlights include new community wallpapers, and the replacement of the Ubuntu Software Centre app with the GNOME Software graphical package manager.

A new project leader has been elected, Set Hallström, which took over the project on April 21, 2016, the day of the official release of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

“Mythbuntu 16.04 has been released. This is a point release on our 14.04 LTS release. If you are already on 14.04, you can get these same updates via the normal update process. This is our third LTS release and will be supported until shortly after the 18.04 release.,” reads the announcement.

“After a year and a half of intense work by the LXD team, LXD 2.0 has been released today! LXD 2.0 is our first production-ready release and also a Long Term Support release, meaning that we will be supporting it with frequent bugfix releases until the 1st of June 2021,” said Stéphane Graber, technical lead for LXD, Canonical.

Is This Really The Ubuntu 16.10 Codename? (Answer: It Is)

Attempting to install Daily Drop of Unity Desktop 16.04. Selecting fourth install option to Erase Disk and Install Ubuntu. Receiving error that Swap Partition creation failed. Unable to proceed with installation and must reboot. This is a hard failure and also happens on the current Gnome Daily 16.04 distribution.

In case someone hasn’t noticed yet, fglrx has been removed from Xenial. There are a couple of reasons for this. First of all, the driver did not support XServer 1.18 which we wanted to get in for 16.04. But more importantly, AMD asked us earlier this year to migrate to the open driver stack since fglrx would not be supported in 16.04.

Snap Packages

New features in Snapcraft 2.8 include better detection of some of the steps that need to be executed for showing the current version of the snapraft.yaml file, support for using the “cleanbuild” command to make sure you have a clean build of your snaps, as well as support for Snappy’s new interface, which is still work in progress.

Starting with Snapcraft 2.8, support for Snappy’s “config” setting has been completely removed, and by popular request, the “geoip” feature has been disabled by default. Users can enable it in Snapcraft using the “–enable-geoip” flag via the command-line. More details should be found in today’s announcement.

  • KDE neon upgrades to 16.04LTS

Neon on 16.04

KDE neon is a package archive of KDE software built on a stable foundation. We use Ubuntu because it’s good technology that we’re familiar with and which provides a Long Term Support foundation we can use. When we started the only practical version to use at the start was 15.10 so our packages have been built using that. But with 16.04LTS due out next week it’s time to move to a solid foundation where we expect to stay for the next couple of years.

Pi Powered Weather Monitor RUNS LINUX

Essentially, one Raspberry Pi acts as a surveillance camera and temperature sensor, while the other Raspberry Pi acts as a remote display. You can view the feed of the camera using a touchscreen that allows you to switch over to a graph at a tap. As you’d expect, you’ll need a couple of Raspberry Pis, a touch screen, a temperature sensor, a Raspberry Pi camera, and a pair of Wi-Fi dongles. When you’re all finished with the project, you’ll easily be able to pull up a live feed from the camera on a Pi. It’s a pretty easy little project when all’s said and done. Head over to Adafruit for the full guide.

Ubuntu Linux Continues To Dominate OpenStack and Other Clouds

In the latest OpenStack user survey, we see that OpenStack is finally gaining real momentum in private clouds. We also see that Ubuntu Linux is continuing to dominate OpenStack. As Canonical cloud marketing manager Bill Bauman said, “Ubuntu OpenStack continues to dominate the majority of deployments with 55 percent of production OpenStack clouds. The previous survey showed Ubuntu OpenStack at 33 percent of production clouds. Ubuntu has seen almost 67 percent growth in an area where Ubuntu was already the market leader. These numbers are a huge testament to the community support Ubuntu OpenStack receives every day.” The Cloud Market’s latest analysis of operating systems on the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) shows Ubuntu with just over 215,000 instances. Ubuntu is followed by Amazon’s own Amazon Linux Amazon Machine Image (AMI), with 86,000 instances. Further back, you’ll find Windows with 26,000 instances. In fourth and fifth place, respectively, you’ll find Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) with 16,500 instances and then CentOS with 12,500 instances.

How Red Hat is Worth 2 Billion

Many corporate cultures still conform to the hierarchical command and control management model designed for 20th century business needs. Knowledge workers are driving our economy today and they thrive in organizations that welcome their opinions, tap their creativity and award contribution over title.

In his new book The Open Organization (published by the Harvard Business Review Press), Red Hat’s CEO Jim Whitehurst challenges businesses to adopt an open approach that ignites passion and performance. Red Hat became the world’s first (and only so far) billion-dollar open source company by staying true to its ethos – leveraging a community approach to creating solutions where the best ideas win.

CIA’s In-Q-Tel invests in Docker, Mesosphere

Mesosphere and Docker are very well-funded San Francisco-based companies, with valuations that are said to be at or above $1 billion.

All Linux ALL The Time

The culture at Cumulus is all about standards. It was expressed repeatedly that Cumulus want to ensure that their linux is absolutely standard, so the file system hierarchy should be the standard, configuration files should be where they normally are, and so forth. A system that doesn’t follow those guidelines becomes a special snowflake that can’t be supported by regular tools and, as you’ll see, this attitude has paid dividends in this solution.

Projects we are Thankful For

View post on imgur.com

SimpleScreenRecorder

SimpleScreenRecorder is ‘simple’ in the sense that it’s easier to use than ffmpeg/avconv or VLC, because it has a straightforward user interface.

The input selection page:

Image: screenshot.png

Features
  • Graphical user interface (Qt-based).
  • Faster than VLC and ffmpeg/avconv.
  • Records the entire screen or part of it, or records OpenGL applications directly (similar to Fraps on Windows).
  • Synchronizes audio and video properly (a common issue with VLC and ffmpeg/avconv).
  • Reduces the video frame rate if your computer is too slow (rather than using up all your RAM like VLC does).
  • Fully multithreaded: small delays in any of the components will never block the other components, resulting is smoother video and better performance on computers with multiple processors.
  • Pause and resume recording at any time (either by clicking a button or by pressing a hotkey).
  • Shows statistics during recording (file size, bit rate, total recording time, actual frame rate, …).
  • Can show a preview during recording, so you don’t waste time recording something only to figure out afterwards that some setting was wrong.
  • Uses libav/ffmpeg libraries for encoding, so it supports many different codecs and file formats (adding more is trivial).
  • Can also do live streaming (experimental).
  • Sensible default settings: no need to change anything if you don’t want to.
  • Tooltips for almost everything: no need to read the documentation to find out what something does.
Why Chris’ Thankful:

*This is a first class screen capture app. Multithreaded is critical for me (my rig is constantly busy during pre-production). It does a fantastic job at capturing audio playing from video, and multiple ways to select the area I want to capture. This is my secret weapon to capture those un-capturable broadcasts for Unfilter *

Mumble, the open source VoIP solution

Mumble Features

Mumble is an open source, low-latency, high quality voice chat software primarily intended for use while gaming.

Why Chris’ Thankful:

I might think it has its quirks, but there are tons of reasons to love Mumble. It sounds good, offers great organizational abilities, allows for recording, and we use it every single LINUX Unplugged for our Virtual LUG and Tech Talk Today for insights into the news

Why Noah is Thankful:
  • An alternative to TeamSpeak that even many TeamSpeak people like better.
  • Easy to spin up your own server
  • Has allowed me to develop a group of friends outside the IRC

FFmpeg

Projects using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is used by software such as VLC media player, xine, HandBrake, Plex, Blender, YouTube,[47] and MPC-HC;[48] it handles video and audio playback in Google Chrome,[48] and Linux version of Firefox.[49] Graphical user interface front-ends for FFmpeg have been developed, including Avanti,[50] and XMedia Recode. JavaCV, a Java wrapper for OpenCV, includes a supplementary Java wrapper for FFmpeg.[51]

FFmpeg is used by ffdshow, LAV Filters, GStreamer FFmpeg plug-in, Perian and OpenMAX IL to expand the encoding and decoding capabilities of their respective multimedia platform.

Why Chris’ Thankful:

Not only does it power tons of tools we all love, but it’s one of the most critical piece of machinery in the Jupiter Broadcasting factory. We encode every episode with ffmpeg. It powers critical tools that many JB staffers use every day

Why Noah is Thankful:
  • Was the first tool I ever used to send a remote video feed to JB
  • Seems to be limited only by creativity
  • One of the tools that exemplifies how FOSS tools can far exceed anything proprietary.

youtube-dl

youtube-dl is a small command-line program to download videos from YouTube.com and a few more sites. It requires the Python interpreter (2.6, 2.7, or 3.2+), and it is not platform specific.

Why Chris’ Thankful:

*Meet one of my new best friends. This is one of the best tools of the year, with support for WAY more sites that YouTube, it makes it possible for JB to grab clips from a WIDE range of sources, store them off-line for immediate playback while on air, and convert/transcode them on the fly into a format suitable for us. Updates are quick, and fix issues with reliability. *

Why Noah is Thankful:
  • Use it daily to download YouTube clips that are bound to be taken off of youtube.
  • Because it’s CLI and not a browser extension it’s invisible until I need it
  • Because it’s CLI I can run it in the background and continue work in the browser, or even close the browser without any real consequences.

Avidemux

Avidemux screen shot

Avidemux is a free video editor designed for simple cutting, filtering and encoding tasks.

Why Chris’ Thankful:

*When working with any kind of long clip, an interview, news report, an episode outtake, Avidemux makes it crazy simple to select JUST the area of the video I want, and copy it out without any quality loss/transcoding. Or I can choose to transcode (say from h.264 video, with mp3 audio in an flv, to vp8, with opus audio, in a webm container) just the portion of the video I want. Another option would be just grabbing an audio portion of a clip, saving it as an MP3, and making an easy ringtone. *

Why Noah’s Thankful:
  • Allows Chris to edit under Linux.
  • Any alternative video editor on Linux provides competition to all improve.
  • No video editor is perfect and so anyone could be “the” video editor under LInux in the near future.

Open Broadcaster Software

OBS Screenshot

What is OBS?

Open Broadcaster Software is free and open source software for video recording and live streaming. Supported features include:

  • Encoding using H264 (x264) and AAC.
  • Support for Intel Quick Sync Video (QSV) and NVENC.
  • Unlimited number of scenes and sources.
  • Live RTMP streaming to Twitch, YouTube, DailyMotion, Hitbox and more.
  • File output to MP4 or FLV.
  • GPU-based game capture for high performance game streaming.
  • DirectShow capture device support (webcams, capture cards, etc).
  • Windows 8 high speed monitor capture support.
  • Bilinear or lanczos3 resampling.
Why Chris’ Thankful:

*While I’m not sure it’s quite there yet, this promises to free us from one huge proprietary monster *

Why Noah is Thankful:
  • One of the big road blocks for JB going all Linux.
  • Can be installed on practically any machine making remote broadcasting much simpler to plan
  • Can be used to build appliance like devices
  • Shortcomings not withstanding it’s usable today

Core Infrastructure Initiative

View post on imgur.com

The stakes have never been higher for open-source software security. With millions of people around the world relying on open source software — and vulnerabilities like Heartbleed putting everyone at risk — it’s time to change the way we support, protect, and fortify open software.

Why Chris’ Thankful:

HeartBleed reminds us that those core infastrucutre projects are vitally important and need funding just as much as the flashy front end facing projects

Why Noah is Thankful:

*A great start to streamline open source software in a way that will allow it to compete at scale with it’s proprietary alternatives.

Wayland Support is REALLY Taking Off

Toolkit support

Toolkits supporting Wayland include the following:

  • Clutter has complete Wayland support.[64]
  • EFL has complete Wayland support, except for selection.[65]
  • GTK+ 3.10 has complete Wayland 1.2 support.[66]
  • Qt 5 has complete Wayland support.
  • SDL support for Wayland debuts with the 2.0.2 release, but as experimental and disabled by default.[67]
  • GLFW 3.1 will have experimental unadvertised Wayland support.[68]
  • FreeGLUT has initial Wayland support[69]

Desktop environments supporting Wayland include the following:

  • KDE support:
    • KWin: is in the process of becoming a Wayland compositor, but support is incomplete;[70] support for OpenGL ES output was added in 2010,[71] in version 4.7.[72] In January 2013 KWin’s main developer Martin Grässlin started working for Blue Systems with one of the goals being a complete Wayland port.[73] Experimental Wayland support is now working in current KWin 4.11.[74]
    • KDE Frameworks 5: it is possible to run most applications built on top of Frameworks 5 under a Wayland compositor, without X11 as X11-dependent codepaths have become optional.[70]
    • KDE Plasma 5: is based on Frameworks 5, but as e.g. interfaces between the workspace shell, the compositor (KWin) and the display server are not yet well-defined or implemented up-stream, support is incomplete.[70]
    • Calligra Suite already has an unofficial but working port to Wayland.[75]
  • Glx-Dock has been ported to Wayland.[76]
  • The Hawaii desktop environment exclusively supports Wayland.
  • GNOME: In March 2013 GNOME developers announced plans for a complete Wayland port within a year.[77] GNOME 3.10 includes initial support that “will enable the project to fully adopt the next generation display and input technology in the future”.[78][79] The current roadmap targets GNOME 3.18 as the first version to be fully ported to Wayland.[80][81]
  • MATE: Wayland support is on MATE’s roadmap for “when MATE will become GTK+3 only”.[82]
Other software

Other software supporting Wayland includes the following:

Mobile and embedded hardware

Mobile and embedded hardware supporting Wayland includes the following:

Wayland Protocols v1.0 Released

The Wayland Protocols 1.0 release includes support for Fullscreen Shell, Input Method, Linux DMA-BUF, Pointer Gestures, Presentation Timing, Text Input, and XDG Shell. All of these protocols are considered unstable for the v1.0 release with no protocols being declared stable yet in this repository.

Why Chris’ Thankful:

*The path to Wayland has been long, and sometimes treacherous. As a long time Linux user it warms my holiday heart to see so much wide spread support, and so much collaboration in moving to Wayland and the future of the Linux graphics stack (also something, something, Mir) *

Conservancy Announces Funding for GPL Compliance Lawsuit

Software Freedom Conservancy announces today Christoph Hellwig’s lawsuit
against VMware in the district court of Hamburg in Hamburg, Germany.
This is the regretful but necessary next step in both
Hellwig and Conservancy’s ongoing effort to convince VMware to comply
properly with the terms of the GNU General Public License version 2 (GPLv2), the license of Linux and many other
Open Source and Free Software included in VMware’s ESXi products.

Hellwig, a key Linux kernel developer and one of the earliest members of
Conservancy’s GPL Compliance Project for Linux Developers, has
publicly denounced VMware’s misuse of GPL-licensed code since 2007. In 2011, Conservancy discovered that VMware had failed to provide nor offer any source
code for the version of BusyBox included in VMware’s ESXi products (as
required by BusyBox’s license, GPLv2). Conservancy began in early 2012
negotiations with VMware to seek compliance on all GPL’d components in the
ESXi project. Progress was slow through 2012 and 2013.

Why Chris’ Thankful:

Hellwig’s lawsuit against VMware to enforce the GPL license of BusyBox, and the Conservancy’s support of it could be have long term ramfications for future ablity to encofce the GPL.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.2 – A major desktop milestone

So many of you have probably seen that RHEL 7.2 is out today. There are many important updates in this release, some of them detailed in the official RHEL 7.2 press release.

One thing however which you would only discover if you start digging into the 7.2 update is that its the first time in RHEL history that we are doing a full scale desktop update in a point release. We shipped RHEL 7.0 with GNOME 3.8 and in RHEL 7.2 we are updating it to GNOME 3.14. This brings in a lot of new major features into RHEL, like the work we did on improved HiDPI support, improved touch and gesture support, it brings GNOME Software to RHEL, the improved system status area and so on. We plan on updating the desktop further in later RHEL 7.x point releases.

RedHat / Fedora
About RedHat

Red Hat, the world’s leading provider of open source solutions, today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Ansible, Inc., a provider of powerful IT automation solutions designed to help enterprises move toward frictionless IT. Ansible’s automation capabilities, together with Red Hat’s existing management portfolio, will help users drive down the cost and complexity of deploying and managing both cloud-native and traditional applications across hybrid cloud environments. With today’s announcement, Red Hat expands its leadership in hybrid cloud management, OpenStack and containers.

Why Noah is Thankful:
  • One of the largest open source companies that has not let it’s profits get in the way of it’s commitment to free and open source software
  • Saved me from Windows, and made me believe there was hope for Linux as a desktop
  • A core group of people that are doing every day what many companies fractions of their size say isn’t possible for “big companies”
  • Maker of Fedora

What is OBS MultiPlatform?

OBS MultiPlatform is a complete rewrite of the original OBS from the ground up, with the main goals of course being multiplatform support, a more thorough feature set, and a much more powerful API. A very early and simple release is currently available for Mac.

OBS MultiPlatform will eventually support many of the advanced requested features not present in the original OBS, such as multiple stream outputs and scene previewing. It does not have these features in this release.

I took an old 1940s (I think) record player/radio unit from my Dad’s antique shop and modified it to suit my needs. I removed all of the (broken) internal components, fixed it up, painted it, and turned it into a base for my music and entertainment centre.

Linux on a USB Stick for Students

Lernstick is a mobile and secure learning and working environment for school and home that is usually installed on removable media (USB sticks, USB hard disks, SD cards, etc.) so that (almost*) any computer can be booted from these storage media. A hard drive with an installed operation system is no longer necessary. (But optionally, the system can also be installed on internal hard drives.)

GNU dmd

GNU dmd is a “Daemon managing Daemons” (or “Daemons-managing Daemon”?), i.e. a service manager that provides a replacement for the service-managing capabilities of SysV-init (or any other init) with a both powerful and beautiful dependency-based system with a convenient interface. It is intended for use on GNU/Hurd, but it is supposed to work on every POSIX-like system where Guile is available. In particular, it has been tested on GNU/Linux

It’s Been Three Years Since The Big Steam Linux Reveal

Fast forward three years, there’s now more than 1,100 games on Steam for Linux!

Going out this year there’s Source 2 to look forward to seeing, Steam Machines and the Steam Controller expected for release before year end, and SteamOS should be stabilized. There’s also going to be the release of the open-source Intel Vulkan driver financed by Valve for as soon as the Khronos Group releases the first official Vulkan specification.

Scientists Use Ubuntu to Interpret Hubble Telescope Data

The Hubble space telescope is now in the news because it celebrates 25 years since its launch and that is an amazing achievement, especially if we keep in mind that it was launched with a flaw that could have turned it into space junk.

Endless Computers by Endless Team

A few years ago, on a trip to India, we had an epiphany: If we ran a full desktop operating system on the inexpensive processors that power smartphones, and plugged them into the TVs people already own, we could make a computer that is affordable to more people.

Snowmix is a video mixer tool for mixing live and recorded video and audio feeds. It supports clipping, scaling and transparent overlay of video, png graphics and text. It supports animation of video, images and texts through native commands changing scale, placement, transparency and rotation. Animation and actions can also be controlled through native scripting and an embedded Tcl interpreter. Snowmix is designed for control over low bandwidth links and can work as a standalone CLI based program. Control over both CLI and a TCP connections. Imcomptech

The cost for me to share music is low, and the benefits are high. There are a lot of schools with no money, and plenty of film makers who want to have music – but can’t afford to clear copyrights from the existing systems that are set up. I believe that copyright is badly broken , so I chose a license that allows me to to give away the rights I wish to surrender.

PC gaming is expanding, Valve’s GDC 2015 announcements recap

Valve Controller Final

Valve attended GDC in full force this year and talked about a lot of stuff. Here’s everything they talked about it in one post.

More than 50 titles are highlighted, including three of PCWorld’s favorite games of 2014The Talos Principle, Transistor, _and our Game of the Year, _Wasteland 2—and a slew of other spectacular titles like Metro Redux, The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Civilization: Beyond Earth, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, _and _Goat Simulator, among many others.

This drop to just over 1.0% is the lowest numbers we’ve seen for Linux’s representation on Steam in quite a number of months. However, it’s not a huge surprise.

With the Vulkan API still in flux and not finalized until later this year, Valve has been developing their own Intel GPU reference driver for Vulkan to help early adopters boot-strap their code. Valve said during their presentation today at GDC2015 that this Intel Linux driver will be open-sourced, but they haven’t provided a time-frame for doing so.

VMware alleged to have violated Linux’s open source license for years

Christoph Hellwig

Linux kernel developer Christoph Hellwig filed the suit in the district court of Hamburg, Germany with funding from the nonprofit Software Freedom Conservancy, which works to “promote, improve, develop, and defend” free and open source software. The case centers on “a combined work that VMware allegedly created by combining their own code (‘vmkernel’) with portions of Linux’s code, which was licensed only under GPLv2,” _the group said in an FAQ describing the lawsuit._

Software Freedom Conservancy

Software Freedom Conservancy announces today Christoph Hellwig’s lawsuit against VMware in the district court of Hamburg in Hamburg, Germany. This is the regretful but necessary next step in both Hellwig and Conservancy’s ongoing effort to convince VMware to comply properly with the terms of the GPLv2, the license of Linux and many other Open Source and Free Software included in VMware’s ESXi products.

No reboot patching comes to Linux 4.0

Living patching in Linux 4.0

At the Linux Plumbers Conference in October 2014, the two groups got together and started work on a way to _patch Linux without rebooting that combines the best of both programs. Essentially, what they ended up doing was putting both kpatch and kGraft in the 4.0 Linux kernel._
