List of Possible Silk Road Bitcoin Bidders Leaked by US Marshals

A list of individuals interested in the auction of the 30,000 bitcoins confiscated from the now-defunct Silk Road black marketplace has been leaked via email by the US Marshals Service (USMS), the US government agency confirmed.

In a statement to CoinDesk, Lynzey Donahue, a US Marshals spokeswoman, indicated that the emailer had intended to send all the recipients an attached informational document and to blind copy all those it intended to contact. The US Marshals service is the federal agency that has been charged with carrying out the auction of the bitcoins, originally seized by the FBI.

T-Mobile’s ‘Music Freedom’ is a great feature — and a huge problem | The Verge

T-Mobile has decided, arbitrarily, that some of the data traveling over its pipes should count against a cap, while other data should not. What’s to stop it from using data cap exemptions as a punitive measure against content providers that aren’t on good terms with T-Mobile (or its parent company Deutsche Telekom)?

Japan’s ruling party says won’t regulate bitcoin for now

Japan’s leading Liberal Democratic Party said it decided against regulating bitcoin for the time being, after the collapse of Tokyo-based bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox prompted them to consider more scrutiny of the virtual currency.

Fire Destroys Iron Mountain Data Warehouse in Buenos Aires

  • Although it’s unclear how the fire started, it spread quickly and took hours to control.
  • Nine first-responders were killed during the blaze, while two are missing, and seven others are reported injured.
  • By the time the fire was put out, the building “appeared to be ruined” according to news reports.
  • Among the data stored there were several archives containing corporate and central bank records, a potentially huge loss that could have some surprisingly far reaching consequences.
  • Just last month, for instance, the United States Supreme Court decided to hear a case on whether creditors could seek historic bank records from Argentina regarding the country’s default in 2001. Whether or not such files have now been destroyed is unknown.
  • The Buenos Aires facility apparently was supposed to have had a team of private firefighters at the facility. That’s in addition to the sprinkler systems, and automatic containment mechanisms designed to stop fires from spreading through the building.
  • According to local reports, it appears that the storage facility this occurred at was primarily used to store physical, paper records, not digital data. Iron Mountain has yet to release any further statements on the issue, so it’s unclear if there are any digital copies of these records. There is no mention of backup copies however in either Iron Mountain’s original press release, or in any of the statement’s from Argentine officials.
  • Even with paper records (or maybe especially?), it is important to have backups, stored off-site

What happens with digital rights management in the real world?

  • This article attempts to skip over the usual arguments about DRM, Copyright vs Fair Use, Morality, etc.
  • Instead it focuses on what has actually happened with DRM in the real world
  • The only reason most DRM works at all, is the legal protection it gets from the Government
  • DRM is fundamentally technically flawed, as it relies on encrypting the valuable data, but having to give the keys to decrypt it to the attacker
  • “A good analogue to this is inkjet cartridges. Printer companies make a lot more money when you buy your ink from them, because they can mark it up like crazy. So they do a bunch of stuff to stop you from refilling your cartridges and putting them in your printer. Nevertheless, you can easily and legally buy cheap, refilled and third-party cartridges for your printer. “
  • This is no so with DRM, because it enjoys legal protections in the form of laws like the DMCA which make breaking DRM, even without committing any copyright infringement, illegal
  • “Here\’s another thing about security: it’s a process, not a product (hat tip to Bruce Schneier!)”
  • “Here is where DRM and your security work at cross-purposes. The DMCA\’s injunction against publishing weaknesses in DRM means that its vulnerabilities remain unpatched for longer than in comparable systems that are not covered by the DMCA. That means that any system with DRM will on average be more dangerous for its users than one without DRM.“
  • “However, various large and respected security organisations say they knew about the Sony Rootkit months before the disclosure, but did not publish because they feared punishment under the DMCA”
  • “But there can be no real security in a world where it is illegal to tell people when the computers in their lives are putting them in danger. In other words, there can be no real security in a world where the DMCA and its global cousins are still intact.”
  • “You see, contrary to what the judge in Reimerdes said in 2000, this has nothing to do with whether information is free or not – it\’s all about whether people are free.”

Defense Contractors Say They Remain Vulnerable To Cyber-Attack

  • The ThreatTrack Security defense contractor survey focused on a unique population of IT managers and staffers responsible for securing networks for organizations fulfilling U.S. government defense contracts.
  • One quarter of those polled work for organizations with IT security budgets of $1 million to $10 million, and another 23% for organizations with budgets exceeding $10 million
  • 88% believe “the government provides adequate guidance and support to contractors to ensure sensitive data is secure and protected against cyber-attacks.”
  • Despite the high level of confidence regarding the government’s security guidance, almost two-thirds (62%) of IT managers polled worry that their companies are vulnerable to targeted malware attacks.
  • The survey uncovered sharp differences in security attitudes and practices between defense contractors and the overall enterprise community.
  • For instance, senior leaders within defense contractors far less frequently engage in risky behavior, such as opening phishing emails, lending work computers to family members or using company-owned PCs to visit pornographic websites harboring malware.
  • And though their level of anxiety over vulnerability to cybercrimes isn’t too different – 62%
among contractors and 68.5% in the enterprise – their reasons differ.
Enterprise executives said they fear they lack adequate protection (based on a June 2013 ThreatTrack Security survey), while contractors worry more about the frequency and complexity of malware attacks.
  • The survey also found contractors take more precautions against cyber-attacks than their general enterprise counterparts, which is a positive discovery considering the nature of their work.
  • Asked about the most difficult aspects of defending their organizations from advanced malware, 61% of respondents cited the volume of attacks and 59% pointed to malware complexity. The number of people concerned about other aspects drops dramatically, with
34% blaming the ineffectiveness of anti-malware tools and 29% saying they don’t have enough budget for the right tools.
  • Also notable: More than a quarter of respondents (26%) said their staffs don’t have enough highly skilled IT security experts, including malware analysts.
  • Based on the survey’s findings, the Snowden affair has had a profound impact on how defense contractors hire and train employees who handle sensitive information. Snowden’s leaks have caused contractors to restrict IT administrative rights and be more alert to any potential misbehavior by employees regarding data access.
  • 55% of respondents said employees now get more cybersecurity-awareness training, 52% said they have reviewed and/or re-evaluated employee data-access privileges, and 47% said they are on higher alert for “potential misbehavior or anomalous network activity.”
  • In addition, 41% said they have implemented stricter hiring practices, and 39% have curtailed
IT administrative rights. Respondents who said nothing has changed were in the minority, though they still amounted to nearly one quarter (23%) of participants.

Hynix factory in China suffers damage in Fire. RAM prices shoot up

  • The factory in Wuxi, China is responsible for 40 – 50% of Hynix’s output and 12 – 15% of all DRAM manufacturing capacity around the globe
  • The fire started at 07:50 GMT and was extinguished at 09:20 GMT
  • The fire apparently started while Hynix was installing some new equipment
  • There was only one minor injury during the file
  • Hynix has suspended operations at the plant while it evaluates the damage and makes repairs
  • “Following news of the shutdown all memory suppliers have apparently stopped quoting prices”
  • Reuters followup article
  • Hynix reports that the damage is not as bad as initially reported, the huge plumes of black smoke were caused by the fact that the fire was in the air purification system
  • Shares in Hynix’s competitors rose sharply, but then slackened off once it was reported that the damage was not severe. Micron shares were up 4 percent to $14.615 at midday Thursday, after surging almost 9 percent at one point. Sandisk was up 2.3 percent at $56.60, after climbing 6 percent at its peak.
  • Samsung had 32.7 percent of the global DRAM market in the second quarter, Hynix 30 percent and Micron owned 12.9 percent
  • Hynix has published a statement: \”Currently, there is no material damage to the fab equipment in the clean room, thus we expect to resume operations in a short time period so that overall production and supply volume would not be materially affected\”
  • DRAM chip prices nearly doubled in the first six months of this year due to tight supply during the summer, prices had been starting to return to normal but this event will undoubtedly keep them inflated for some time to come

Amazon looking to hire 100 IT staff who can get Top Secret security clearance to work on CIA private cloud

  • After IBM won a lawsuit to restart the bidding to decide who would build the CIA’s private cloud, Amazon has started a new recruiting drive
  • The job openings include: software developers, operations managers and cloud support engineers, among others
  • Candidates must meet all requirements to get a Top Secret security clearance, including passing a federally administered polygraph exam
  • “Amazon\’s hiring effort includes an invitation-only recruiting event for systems support engineers at its Herndon, Va., facility on Sept. 24 and 25. “
  • In filings, Amazon is claiming that it is uniquely qualified to deliver ‘cloud computing’, while analysts have responded by saying that Cloud computing \”simply describes one approach to data center asset provisioning, one that has been around and been practiced by vendors including IBM for many years\”
  • The government originally accepted Amazon’s bid at $148 million over the IBM bid at $93 million
  • Part of the problem was the way the government wrote the original RFP
  • “The vendors were required to address hypothetical scenarios. In one instance, it involved the processing of 100 terabytes of data. But the scenario was ambiguous, and the vendors priced it in different ways, making it impossible to compare prices”
  • Analysts also said that the CIA \”too casually brush off Amazon\’s outages\” when considering their bid
  • Amazon\’s effort to get government cloud work includes being certified by the U.S. under its Federal Risk and Authorization Program, or FEDRAMP.

Kingcope finds vulnerabilities in Mikrotik routerOS sshd

  • Mikrotik RouterOS uses ROSSSH rather than OpenSSH
  • Kingcope found that ROSSSH is vulnerable to a remote pre-authentication heap corruption
  • ShodanHQ shows that there are nearly 300,000 devices running ROSSSH
  • There is an undocumented built-in user account, you can login as ‘devel’ using the admin password, if the file /etc/devel-login exists
  • By sending a login name consisting of the letter A 100,000 times, you can crash the ssh daemon
  • Exploitation of this vulnerability will allow full access to the router device

Third North Korean Nuclear Test

A North Korean nuclear test draws international condemnation, modest U.N. sanctions and expressions of hope in the United States that China will finally rein in its ally.

Dorner Manhunt Comes to an End

A lot of people don\’t seem to know what a \”burner\” is. A burner is an incendiary tear gas canister that is specifically made to start a fire. These were used in Waco on the branch Davidians. At the time the FBI claimed the cult member started the fire, but much later the FBI admitted to using incendiary tear gas canisters to burn the Davidians out of hiding.

A tear gas canister ignited a fire at a City Terrace area home surrounded by SWAT officers as part of a standoff the morning Wednesday Jan. 16, 2013, according to sheriff\’s deputies.

Hoping to end the standoff, law enforcement authorities first lobbed “traditional” tear gas into the cabin. When that did not work, they opted to use CS gas canisters, which are known in law enforcement parlance as incendiary tear gas. These canisters have significantly more chance of starting a fire.

Obama’s 2013 State of the Union Address

The main difference between the White House executive order and CISPA is that CISPA would allow private companies (like Facebook or Google) to share details about cyber attacks with the government, whereas the executive order is a one-way street, with the feds sharing information with the private sector. CISPA opponents were concerned about immunity clauses that they said would incentivize companies to hand over customer information without hesitation.

DHS engages \’Constitution free\’ zones around US border

According to the US Department of Homeland Security, anyone who is within a 100 mile radius of the US border is subject to the search and seizure of any and all electronic devices for no apparent reason. These zones known as \”Constitution free\” zones have many privacy advocates speaking out against the new policy and fear that this new procedure is a violation of civil liberties for American citizens.

US senators propose assassination court to screen drone targets

The idea was bandied about during Thursday\’s confirmation hearing for CIA director nominee John Brennan, who fueled the talk by saying he thinks the concept is \”worthy of discussion.\” The nominee, as a vocal supporter of the targeted-killing program, has come under scrutiny for what some lawmakers see as the administration\’s unchecked power to kill, even if the target is an American citizen.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said as part of an effort to regulate the killing, she wants to review proposals to create something similar to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court — which reviews requests for wiretaps against suspected foreign agents — for drone strikes.
Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, is pushing the idea the hardest.

According to his vision, the drone court would be an avenue for U.S. officials to argue in secret before a judge why an American citizen should be targeted for death. He said it would be like \”going to a court for a warrant\” and proving probable cause.
