FOSDEM 2015

Every year, thousands of developers of free and open source software from all over the world gather at the event in Brussels.

systemd is now a core component of most major distributions. In this talk I want to give an overview over everything new in the systemd project over the last year, and what to expect over the next year.

Hopefully it clears up what we mean when we talk about systemd and desktop environments, and where we could use different parts of systemd.

It should be apparent that as developers there are parts we want to embrace as it. In many cases it allows us to throw away large amounts of code whilst at the same time providing a better user experience. Adding it as an optional extra defeats the main benefit.

Raspberry Pi 2 on sale now at $35 | Raspberry Pi

Let’s get the good stuff out of the way above the fold. Raspberry Pi 2 is now on sale for $35 (the same price as the existing Model B+), featuring:

  • A 900MHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 CPU (~6x performance)
  • 1GB LPDDR2 SDRAM (2x memory)
  • Complete compatibility with Raspberry Pi 1

Because it has an ARMv7 processor, it can run the full range of ARM GNU/Linux distributions, including Snappy Ubuntu Core, as well as Microsoft Windows 10.

Speaking to The Register last week, foundation head honcho Eben Upton said: “I think it’s a usable PC now. It was always the case that you could use a Raspberry Pi 1 as a PC but you had to say ‘this is a great PC in so far as it cost me 35 bucks’. We’ve removed the caveat that you had to be a bit forgiving with it. Now it’s just good.”

Android Shipped 1 Billion Smartphones Worldwide in 2014

According to the latest research from our WSS (Smartphones) service, global smartphone shipments grew 30 percent annually to reach a record 1.3 billion units in 2014. Android accounted for 81 percent of all smartphones last year and shipped over 1 billion units worldwide for the first time ever.

Microsoft to Invest in Rogue Android Startup Cyanogen – Digits – WSJ

People familiar with the matter say Microsoft is putting money into Cyanogen, which is building a version of the Android mobile-operating system outside of Google’s auspices.

Microsoft would be a minority investor in a roughly $70 million round of equity financing that values Cyanogen in the high hundreds of millions, one of the people said. The person said the financing round could grow with other strategic investors that have expressed interest in Cyanogen because they’re also eager to diminish Google’s control over Android. The identity of the other potential investors couldn’t be learned.

Prosecutors Trace $13.4M in Bitcoins From the Silk Road to Ulbricht’s Laptop

In Ulbricht’s trial Thursday, former FBI special agent Ilhwan Yum described how he traced 3,760 bitcoin transactions over 12 months ending in late August 2013 from servers seized in the Silk Road investigation to Ross Ulbricht’s Samsung 700z laptop, which the FBI seized at the time of his arrest in October of that year. In all, he followed more than 700,000 bitcoins along the public ledger of bitcoin transactions, known as the blockchain, from the marketplace to what seemed to be Ulbricht’s personal wallets. Based on exchange rates at the time of each transaction, Yum calculated that the transferred coins were worth a total of $13.4 million.

Community Review: KaOS

The idea behind KaOS is to create a tightly integrated rolling and transparent distribution for the modern desktop, build from scratch with a very specific focus.
Focus on one DE (KDE), one toolkit (Qt), one architecture (x86_64) plus a focus on evaluating and selecting the most suitable tools and applications.

All work is geared toward packaging, not developing new tools or applications.

There is no goal to make the most possible software available, KaOS will stay limited in size of the repositories, and will work on quality instead of quantity. That goal makes it clear, a large user base is not what is intended or expected.

It targets users who have tried many Operating Systems/Distributions/Desktop Environments and have found they prefer a Distribution that uses all its available resources to work on one DE to make that the best it can be, and know that after their searches, the best for them is KDE.

KaOS – 2014.06 Release Notes

The June version comes with an installer, non-free nvidia driver, all language packs, KDE 4.13.2, linux kernel 3.14.6 (linux-next is in the repo’s, following the 3.15 series), glibc 2.19, systemd 212, kmod 17, xorg-server 1.15.1, Qt 4.8.6, QtWebkit 2.3.3, mesa 10.2.1, calligra 2.8.3, amarok 2.8.0 and the latest versions of qupzilla, octopi, kde-telepathy, kdenlive, plasma-mediacenter and Qt 5.3.0.

For those wondering about gtk apps, firefox 30.0, chrome 37, thunderbird 24.6.0, ardour 3.5 are among the available in their latest version.

But why? If companies and developers have been looking at AR for years now, where are our fancy future goggles? Could it be a commercial issue, or something more SINISTER about the human condition itself?
