Google Set to Unveil Wireless Service – WSJ

Google Inc. GOOGL 0.63% is set to unveil its new U.S. wireless service as early as Wednesday, pushing the Internet giant further into telecom and injecting fresh uncertainty into a wireless industry already locked in a price war.

In a key development, the service is expected to allow customers to pay only for the amount of data they actually use each month, people familiar with the matter said—a move that could further push carriers to do away with lucrative “breakage.”

Microsoft Announces Device Guard For Windows 10

Microsoft has announced a new feature for Windows 10 called Device Guard, which aims to give administrators full control over what software can or cannot be installed on a device. “It provides better security against malware and zero days for Windows 10 by blocking anything other than trusted apps—which are apps that are signed by specific software vendors, the Windows Store, or even your own organization. … To help protect users from malware, when an app is executed, Windows makes a determination on whether that app is trustworthy, and notifies the user if it is not. Device Guard can use hardware technology and virtualization to isolate that decision making function from the rest of the Windows operating system, which helps provide protection from attackers or malware that have managed to gain full system privilege.” It’s intended to be used in conjunction with traditional anti-virus, not as a replacement.

Well, according to TrekMovie.com, who admittedly has a pretty good track record with Trek movie rumors. The title matches the volume-number-less installment of Star Trek Into Darkness, but seems to confirms the new Enterprise crew will finally be going on its five-year mission to explore strange new worlds, etc.

A New Tool Against Cyber Threats — Medium

It’s one of the great paradoxes of our Information Age — the very technologies that empower us to do great good can also be used by adversaries to inflict great harm. The same technologies that help keep our military strong are used by hackers in China and Russia to target our defense contractors and systems that support our troops. Networks that control much of our critical infrastructure — including our financial systems and power grids — are probed for vulnerabilities by foreign governments and criminals.

Cyber intrusions and attacks — many of them originating overseas — are targeting our businesses, stealing trade secrets, and costing American jobs. Iranian hackers have targeted American banks. The North Korean cyber attack on Sony Pictures destroyed data and disabled thousands of computers. In other recent breaches that have made headlines, more than 100 million Americans had their personal data compromised, including credit card and medical information.

The Galaxy S6 Edge also doesn’t play too nicely with Google’s Material Design. Samsung has my eternal appreciation for following Google’s lead in moving to a cleaner, more minimalist interface, but Material Design emphasizes flatness and geometric regularity, which the Edge’s warping side screens disturb. They create a sort of vignette effect on white pages and are a hindrance rather than a help when editing photos.

The Chromebook Flip squeezed an adequate supply of connectivity into its slender profile. On one side, you’ll see two USB 2.0 ports, an SD card slot, HDMI, and an audio jack. On the other, you’ll see power and volume buttons, plus the DC power port.

Under the hood you’ll find 2GB of RAM and the Rockchip 3288 CPU. Rockchip, a new partner for Google, brings less expensive, more power-efficient CPUs to the Chromebook lineup. Google also announced new Chromebooks from Haier and Hisense with the same chip. Benchmarks from our hands-on with the new Hisense Chromebook indicate that this processor holds up well compared to older ARM chips.

To that end, one of Google’s newest additions to the lineup of devices, the Chomebit, hawks Chrome OS without even trying to sell a Chromebook laptop.

RadioShack co-branding of stores with Sprint wins court approval | Reuters

A plan to salvage RadioShack Corp’s RSHCQ.PK business by co-branding most of its 1,740 surviving stores with cellular phone provider Sprint Corp (S.N) earned U.S. bankruptcy court approval on Tuesday, ending four days of contested court hearings.

The stores are what survived of more than 4,000 outlets after RadioShack went bankrupt in February. Founded in 1921, the chain was a go-to retailer for electronics before becoming increasingly irrelevant in the digital age.

Galaxy S6 release date is April 10th, and US pre-orders start tomorrow | The Verge

The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge coming to the US will largely be the same as the model available globally. They have 5.1-inch, qHD Super AMOLED displays, 32, 64, or 128GB of internal storage, Samsung’s octacore Exynos processors, and 16-megapixel cameras with optical image stabilization. Unfortunately, US customers will only be able to choose from black, white, or gold color options — the striking emerald green S6 Edge and navy blue S6 are not coming to the US, at least not at this time.

Yesterday we received our Galaxy S6 and S6 edge review units. We’re still working on the final review but I wanted to share some early results from both devices. For those that are unfamiliar with these two phones, the Galaxy S6 range represents the result of Samsung’s “Project Zero”. In fact, the phones seem to have the internal name of Zero, which can be seen in terminal, and the build properties of both devices. For Samsung, these phones represent their attempt at completely rethinking how Samsung makes phones. There is a strong emphasis on a new unibody design, which has no visible gaps or screws. Rather than the plastic that previous Samsung phones have been known for, the new design is composed of metal and glass. Samsung’s design team has been given unprecedented control throughout the process of making this phone and the result of this is a Galaxy phone that looks unlike anything else they’ve ever released.

HTC One M9 to go on sale for $649 unlocked tonight

Never mind that M9+ thing in China. Back in the US, it’s all about the M9 for local HTC fans, as the device is about to hit the official online store at midnight ET for $649 unlocked (it’ll have the same bands as the AT&T model). This may not mean much for folks who are used to subsidized phones, but if you compare this contract-free price with those from other regions, it’s actually rather attractive — even when you include tax. In Hong Kong, you’re looking at around $770. Not to mention that US buyers also get to enjoy HTC’s “Uh Oh Protection” program, which replaces your device — be it faulty or simply because you want to change networks — one time for free within a year, and you get $100 credit towards your next HTC phone if you end up not requiring this service.

Amazon has announced two unlimited storage plans for its cloud-based storage service, Amazon Cloud Drive, which sees a massive price reduction for its giant hard-drive in the sky.

The plans focus on two specific scenarios. For those who have loads of photos, there is the Unlimited Photos plan that costs $11.99 per year. Then there’s the Unlimited Everything plan that, well, does what its name suggests, and costs $59.99 per year. There’s also a free three-month trial available to see how much “unlimited” space you actually need and for what. At any rate, with a monthly cost of $5, it’s almost worthwhile paying for the service irrespective of how much cloud-based storage you actually need.

The “Oculus Platform” Marketplace For Virtual Reality App Launches This Fall | TechCrunch

Oculus announced the “Oculus Platform” store for developers to distribute their virtual reality apps and experiences today at the Oculus Connect conference. Starting this fall on the Samsung Gear VR made by Oculus, this revamp of the Oculus Share marketplace will let users browse the Oculus Platform within virtual reality and download apps, games, and entertainment experiences.

Eventually, there will be versions of the Oculus Platform for the Rift, iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer. Oculus Platform could become one of the first ways for developers to sell the VR experiences they build, and by creating this marketplace, Oculus could rally the ecosystem to its mobile and PC-based VR headsets.

Kicking off the Oculus Connect conference in Los Angeles this weekend, Oculus’s Nirav Patel announced that the original Oculus Rift developer kit (DK1) is now fully open-source, with the exception of the pieces that aren’t actually in production anymore—for instance, the display, which is no longer manufactured.

“We don’t want everyone to have to take the same risks we took. We just want to share the things we learned so you don’t have to do that. We’re all in this to build virtual reality together,” said Patel.

• Driving the news: IFA 2014

IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung) is an annual consumer electronics show held in Berlin, Germany, which often serves as a launching platform for smartphone and tablet manufacturers. Think of it as a mini-Mobile World Congress. Last year’s IFA hosted the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear, among others. This year’s event officially runs from Sept. 5-10, but we’re expecting many of larger announcements to be made in the couple of days before IFA officially begins.

The Galaxy Note Edge is a flagship phone with an entirely new kind of curved display | The Verge

Samsung has introduced the Note 4, a 5.7-inch phone with a 1440p SuperAMOLED display coming in October.

The Note Edge is, on paper at least, only the slightest variation on the new Note 4. It has the same metallic design. It has the same 16-megapixel camera, the same heart-rate monitor, the same processor, the same memory, the same software. It even has a Quad HD, 2560 x 1440 display like the Note 4, though this one is slightly smaller at 5.6 inches rather than 5.7.

It’s on the right side of the phone’s front face that a sharp difference appears between the two models. The screen starts to slope downward, falling off toward the edge and wrapping around the side. It’s as if two screens have been connected to each other at an acute angle, but there’s only one display here. The asymmetry of the phone feels a little odd, like I chipped part of the right side off by accident, but it doesn’t really hurt the aesthetic appeal of the phone. It’s still very comfortable, the metal body both solid and dense, and I like the way the screen curls under my right thumb. (If you’re a lefty, using the Note Edge in one hand is going to be terrible — but then again using a Note in one hand is already terrible.)

Sony announces its latest flagship smartphone, the Xperia Z3

You’ll find a 5.2-inch, 1080p display, a 20.7-megapixel camera and waterproofing. (Same as the Z2)

Sony has also added a new, wide-angle 25mm lens (to fit more into a shot) and extra-high ISO 12,800 light sensitivity.

A 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 processor instead of the 2.3GHz chip you saw in the Z2.

Price and carries will be annouced in the fall.

Samsung and Oculus partner to create Gear VR, a virtual reality headset that uses the Note 4 (hands-on)

Samsung’s getting in on the virtual reality action, announcing Gear VR at IFA 2014 today in Berlin, Germany. Gear VR is a virtual reality headset with a removable front cover where Samsung’s newly announced Note 4 slips in, acting as the screen. Paired with adjustable lenses built into the headset

• Built in Camera
• No wires (that means no PC to drive it too)
• Touch Pad
• Good build

The only information on availability is “this year,” and there is no price just yet; it’ll be available for purchase online and through “select carriers.” Considering how low-tech Gear VR is, and the fact that Samsung’s pushing a product into a market that doesn’t really exist just yet, I expect the company will aim as low as possible in terms of pricing.

When you do get one, it comes with a 16GB microSD preloaded with a variety of “360-degree videos and 3D movie trailers from major studios” (that’ll go into the Note 4, naturally). Oh, and you’ll need a Note 4 (not a Note 4 Edge — just the Note 4), as Gear VR is built to work with only that device.

Linux systems infiltrated and controlled in a DDoS botnet

Akamai Technologies is alerting enterprises to a high-risk threat of IptabLes and IptabLex infections on Linux systems. Malicious actors may use infected Linux systems to launch DDoS attacks against the entertainment industry and other verticals.

The mass infestation of IptabLes and IptabLex seems to have been driven by a large number of Linux-based web servers being compromised, mainly by exploits of Apache Struts, Tomcat and Elasticsearch vulnerabilities.

Attackers have used the Linux vulnerabilities on unmaintained servers to gain access, escalate privileges to allow remote control of the machine, and then drop malicious code into the system and run it. As a result, a system could then be controlled remotely as part of a DDoS botnet.

A post-infection indication is a payload named .IptabLes or. IptabLex located in the /boot directory. These script files run the .IptabLes binary on reboot.

The malware also contains a self-updating feature that causes the infected system to contact a remote host to download a file. In the lab environment, an infected system attempted to contact two IP addresses located in Asia.

“We have traced one of the most significant DDoS attack campaigns of 2014 to infection by IptabLes and IptabLex malware on Linux systems,” said Stuart Scholly, senior VP and GM, Security Business Unit, Akamai.

Is it an ear infection? There could be an app for that

• An iPhone attachment designed for at-home diagnoses of ear infections
• The low down
• Pediatricians currently diagnose ear infections using the standard otoscope to examine the eardrum
• With a new technology and an app parents could receive a diagnosis at home
• Significance
• With Remotoscope, parents would be able to take a picture or video of their child’s eardrum using the iPhone and send the images digitally to a physician for diagnostic review
• Remotoscope’s clip-on attachment uses the iPhone’s camera and flash as the light source as well as a custom software app to provide magnification and record data to the phone
• Current data transmission capabilities seamlessly send images and video to a doctor’s inbox or to the patient’s electronic medical record.
• This system has the potential to save money for both families and healthcare systems,
• Receiving serial images of a child’s ear over several days via the Remotoscope could allow physicians to wait and see if a child’s infection improves or whether antibiotics are warranted
• Allowing physicians to implement the “watchful waiting” plan rather than prescribing antibiotics right away
• Clinical trials for the Remotoscope is currently underway to see if the device can obtain images of the same diagnostic quality as what a physician sees with a traditional otoscope
• A Emory medical student is recruiting families who come into the emergency department at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta hospitals for treatment of ear infection-type symptoms
• Once a family agrees to be in the trial and the child has seen the emergency room doctor
• Video is taken of the child’s ear with Remotoscope and a traditional otoscope linked to a computer.
• A panel of physicians will review the quality of the samples, make a diagnosis from the Remotoscope video and see if it matches the original diagnosis by the ER doctor.
• Parents are also being asked their opinions on using the device, so far the parents are saying that they would like to use it

An ancient galaxy

• With the combined the power of NASA’s Spitzer and Hubble space telescopes as well as a cosmic magnification effect, a team of astronomers has spotted what could be the most distant galaxy ever detected.
• The low down
• Objects at these extreme distances are mostly beyond the detection sensitivity of today’s largest telescopes
• For these objects have to rely on “gravitational lensing” (predicted by Albert Einstein a century ago) when the gravity of foreground objects warps and magnifies the light from background objects
• In this case it brightening the remote object some 15 times and bringing it into view.
• Significance
• This galaxy is the most distant object we have ever observed with high confidence
• The light from the galaxy came from when the 13.7-billion-year-old universe was just 500 million years old, or 3.6% it’s current age
• The galaxy is small and compact, containing only about 1 percent of the Milky Way’s mass
• This observation supports leading cosmological theories that the first galaxies should indeed have started out tiny, then progressively merged

UK’s Sep 21st fireball

• The low down
• A meteor was seen across the United Kingdom Friday, Sept. 21, when it broke up
• The fireball was seen by observers across Scotland and northern England as well as Ireland
• Many of those observers were able to capture the meteor on camera
• Of Note
• Those video’s show what appears to be a fireball created as a small space rock breaks apart in Earth’s atmosphere.
• Pieces of the meteor can be seen separating from the main body
• Some initially wondered if it was sparked by a man-made piece of equipment
• Further analysis has conclusively tied the event to a naturally occurring space rock burning up in Earth’s atmosphere
• Sighting reports of its trajectory and video’s taken, Veteran satellite tracker Marco Langbroe has said that the fireball was definitely a meteor
• Rough estimates reconstructing the fireball’s trajectory also indicates that this was a meteor, most likely an asteroid

Alcubierre “Warp Drive”

• The low down
• The basic concept of the Alcubierre warp drive is to warp space and time around a ship was suggested in 1994 by Mexican physicist Miguel Alcubierre
• It would cause space-time to warp around the starship, creating a region of contracted space in front of it and expanded space behind
• While the starship itself would stay inside a bubble of flat space-time that wasn’t being warped
• Calculations at the time found that such a device would require prohibitive amounts of energy.
• Significance
• Previous studies estimated the warp drive would require a minimum amount of energy about equal to the mass-energy of the planet Jupiter
• Recently it was calculated what would happen if the shape of the ring encircling the spacecraft was adjusted into more of a rounded donut, as opposed to a flat ring
• In those calculations the warp drive could be powered by a mass about the size of a spacecraft like the Voyager 1
• Of Note
• If the intensity of the space warps can be oscillated over time then the energy required is reduced even more
• Although the basic concept is still impractical these new calculations make it more plausible and worth further investigation
• Scientists have already begun experimenting with a mini version of the warp drive in their laboratory.
• They are hoping to generate a very tiny instance of this in a tabletop experiment, to try to perturb space-time by one part in 10 million

• The team was able to take images of Mars’s moon Phobos transiting the sun
• First contact with a target
• The first target rock, a pyramid shaped rock about the size of a U.S. football was named Jacob Matijevic
• Jacob Matijevic (1947–2012), was the surface operations systems chief engineer for the Mars Science Laboratory Project and the project’s Curiosity rover. He was also a leading engineer for all of the previous NASA Mars rovers: Sojourner, Spirit and Opportunity.
• The main goal of the first measurements taken was to cross calibrate 2 instruments the Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer [APXS] and the Chemistry and Camera
  [ChemCam]

• Images were taken at 10 in [25 cm], 2 in [5 cm], and 1 in [2.5 cm] away from the rock face

Looking back

• Sep 28, 1858 | 154 years ago : 1st Picture of a comet : Donati’s comet (discovered by Giovanni Donati, 1826–1873) became the first to be photographed. It was a bright comet that developed a spectacular curved dust trail with two thin gas tails, captured by an English commercial photographer, William Usherwood, using a portrait camera at a low focal ratio. At Harvard, W.C. Bond, attempted an image on a collodion plate the following night, but the comet shows only faintly and no tail can be seen. Bond was subsequently able to evaluate the image on Usherwood’s plate. The earliest celestial daguerreotypes were made in 1850–51, though after the Donati comet, no further comet photography took place until 1881, when P.J.C. Janssen and J.W. Draper took the first generally recognized photographs of a comet
