Canonical IPO is a go, Microsoft brings more Linux to Windows, OpenWRT, LEDE agree on Linux-for-routers peace plan & Google launches project Treble.

Linux On Windows Server: Linux Admin Scripts Will Now Run On Windows

Last week, at its developer conference Build 2017, Microsoft announced that it’s bringing Windows Subsystem for Linux to Windows Server. Apart from this, Windows Server will also be joining Windows Insider program. The other new features of Windows Server will be aligned with the next release of Windows 10.

I am pleased to share that we are also bringing the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), commonly known as Bash on Windows, to Windows Server. This unique combination allows developer and application administrators to use the same scripts, tools, procedures and container images they have been using for Linux containers on their Windows Server container host. These containers use our Hyper-V isolation technology combined with your choice of Linux kernel to host the workload while the management scripts and tools on the host use WSL.

An Open-Source Steam Controller Driver is in Development

What properly holds me back from buying one is the fact I need to use Steam to use the controller, and the few games I do play aren’t available on Steam (e.g, SuperTuxKart, MAME, etc).

Bundling ZFS and Linux is impossible says Richard Stallman

Enter Stallman, arguing that “Code under GPL-incompatible licenses cannot be added, neither in source nor binary form, without violating the GPL.” He continues: “if you distribute modules meant to be linked together by the user, you have made them into a combined work, and you must release the entire combined work under the GNU GPL.” It’s therefore not possible to release ZFS alongside GNU GPL-licensed code because ZFS is licensed under CDDLv1.

The HTC Vive and Valve’s SteamVR don’t yet support Linux and SteamOS

Smart Gimp Tricks

The Quickmask for adjusting selections: I’m a born-again Quickmask evangelist, because I went so long without realizing that it was there, and it makes selections so much easier.

Decomposing an image and using the components as a mask to select part of an image—that’s an easy way to select skies and get rid of a drab overcast sky, or to change or enhance the color of the sky.

Using the Dodge/Burn tool to make a background really white, for when you want an object to stand out and make the background go away. It can be a lot easier than selecting or erasing.

Feedback:

Noah Hit Something on the Head

“I wish Ubuntu would just use GNOME, and go back to trying to contribute useful bits.”

ScreenShot

Now, I have a few extensions installed, but the way I use GNOME isn’t much different from how someone would use Unity; I keep the Dash up at all times, I have those pesky tray apps up in the corner, and so on. This is so close to how I used to work in Unity, OS X, etc., that I’m puzzled at why GNOME gets treated like the red-headed stepchild sometimes.

Now, I know that once in a while the GNOME dev team decides to go off the deep end (Let’s make the filemanager work like old-school Finder and do that by default! Hell, let’s override users’ pre-existing settings, that’s how good it is!) but overall GNOME just keeps getting better.

Windows Secureboot Causes a Mess

I just made a potentially costly mistake: we nuked and repaved my friend’s brand new Lenovo Yoga 500 with Linux… without booting into Windows to disable SecureBoot explicitly. He didn’t want to accept the EULA; and we successfully booted into USB key (Ubuntu MATE 15.10, Ubuntu w/Unity 15.04) so we thought we would just go ahead.

I thought Ubuntu would have been candidate, but apparently not. Is this the correct way? Which distros would work? We tried installing and booting into Ubuntu Unity 15.04 (which is supposed to have the appropriate signature) but after install and reboot, we get the above. Given that Windows has been obliterated at this point, what options do I have?

Unfortunately, he’s leaving in just over a week, so if the conclusion ends up being “install Windows to do this” I’ll take it….. but I’d rather not!

Ever Heard of FriendOS?

A Server in Your Pocket

Ocean is a mobile server, a device that combines the portability of a mobile phone with the flexibility of a Linux web server.

Want a portable Linux-powered web server that will fit into your pocket? Look no further than Ocean.

Ocean has been designed from the ground up for portability, and features an integrated battery that allows you to run web and Bluetooth applications in places where direct power is limited.

The device is approximately the size of an iPhone 6, and can easily fit in your pocket.

This bundle costs $149 and ships in February. Higher capacity versions are slated to ship later in the year.

Numbers don’t lie—it’s time to build your own router

I’ve noticed a trend lately. Rather than replacing a router when it literally stops working, I’ve needed to act earlier—swapping in new gear because an old router could no longer keep up with increasing Internet speeds available in the area. (Note, I am duly thankful for this problem.) As the latest example, a whole bunch of Netgear ProSafe 318G routers failed me for the last time as small businesses have upgraded from 1.5-9mbps traditional T1 connections to 50mbps coax (cable).

A lot of you are probably muttering, “right, pfSense, sure.” Some of you might even be thinking about smoothwall or untangle NG. I played with most of the firewall distros out there, but I decided to go more basic, more old school: a plain, CLI-only install of Ubuntu Server and a few iptables rules.

Admittedly, this likely isn’t the most practical approach for every reader, but it made sense for me. I have quite a bit of experience finessing iptables and the Linux kernel itself for high throughput at Internet scale, and the fewer shiny features and graphics and clicky things that are put between me and the firewall table, the less fluff I have to get out of the way and the fewer new not-applicable-in-the-rest-of-my-work things I have to learn. Any rule I already know how to create in iptables to manage access to my servers, I also know how to apply to my firewall—if my firewall’s running the same distro as my servers are.

Cumulus Networks is a system software company founded with the principle of enabling high capacity networks that are easy to deploy and affordable. Led by networking experts and innovators from Cisco and VMware, we provide great networking for layer 2, layer 3 and overlay architectures supported by improved economics and a robust ecosystem — a modern alternative to proprietary vendor-locked stacks that constrain IT innovation.

Gnome Core Apps

It would appear that the GNOME developers are currently in the process of revisiting the desktop environment’s moduleset and defining a clear set of core apps, which should form the default user experience in upcoming releases of the GNOME desktop (most probably starting with GNOME 3.20, which should be available in spring 2016).

At the moment of writing this article, the GNOME developers have only managed to announce that the Cheese webcam viewer app has been integrated as a core GNOME app as it is required by the GNOME Control Center, GNOME Initial Setup and GNOME Contacts components. They are also in talks with the developers of the Gedit text editor to make it a core app too.

Furthermore, the GNOME Color Manager component will also be pushed to the core apps moduleset, as the GNOME Control Center software requires it. However, the GNOME developers will also define a set of non-core apps, which they don’t recommend GNU/Linux OS vendors to include in their distributions when using the GNOME desktop environment by default.

Phoenix OS

Google Android may have been developed as a smartphone operating system (and later ported to tablets, TVs, watches, and other platforms), but over the past few years we’ve seen a number of attempts to turn it into a desktop operating system.

One of the most successful has been Remix OS, which gives Android a taskbar, start menu, and an excellent window management system. The Remix OS team has also generated a lot of buzz over the past year, and this week the operating system gained a lot of new alpha testers thanks to a downloadable version of Remix OS that you can run on many recent desktop or notebook computers.

But Remix OS isn’t the only game in town. Phoenix OS is another Android-as-desktop operating system, and while it’s still pretty rough around the edges, there are a few features that could make it a better option for some testers.

This package cannot be included in the main Fedora repository as it’s not free and is not shipped in source form. Since the Steam license allows package redistribution with a specific note for repacking in Linux distributions; the package is now available in RPMFusion.

One key. Two form factors. The Standard and Nano deliver a one-time passcode (OTP) with a simple touch of a button. No SMS-like passcodes to retype from one device to another. Our most basic YubiKey identifies itself as an external keyboard, which eliminates the need for client software or drivers. The nearly indestructible key holds tight onto its secrets, and its design ensures it will never be a vector for viruses or malware, just like the rest of our YubiKeys.

CEO: Employee lawsuits killed Mandriva

The company had generated a mere €553,000 in revenue in 2013 (at today’s exchange rate, that’s about $607,000), with revenue falling for years, according to a notice posted by the company. Croset confirmed that to Business Insider. That wasn’t enough revenue, so he had to dismiss some people, particularly sales staff.

In 2014 revenues were climbing again, up by 40%, he told us. Costs were down by 60%. The company wasn’t yet profitable, but it had just broken even. Croset — who is Swiss, not French — blames the legal system in France for Mandriva’s demise.

That’s because the laid-off workers sued the company and won just, he says, as Mandriva was breaking even. (The details of the suits, including names of employees involved, are confidential, he told us, and he declined to offer details.)

The company was ordered to pay these employees hundreds of thousands of euros and ordered to pay “provisory execution,” meaning immediately, even though the appeals process was not complete, Croset tells us.

SourceForge grabs GIMP for Windows’ account, wraps installer in bundle-pushing adware

The GIMP project is not officially distributed through SourceForge—approved releases are only posted on the GIMP project’s own Web page. But Jernej Simončič, the developer who has been responsible for building Windows versions of GIMP for some time, has maintained an account on SourceForge to act as a distribution mirror. That is, he had until today, when he discovered he was locked out of the Gimp-Win account, and the project’s ownership “byline” had been changed to “sf-editor1″—a SourceForge staff account. Additionally, the site now provided Gimp in an executable installer that has in-installer advertising enabled.

In a blog post issued shortly after this story posted, an unidentified member of SourceForge’s community team wrote that, in fact, “this project was actually abandoned over 18 months ago, and SourceForge has stepped-in to keep this project current.” That runs counter to claims by members of the GIMP development community.

Kubuntu Project Lead Asked To Step Down by Ubuntu Community Council

In a spat that reads more like a plot from Game of Thrones, Jonathan Riddell has been told that his leadership of the Kubuntu community is ‘no longer recognised’ by the council — a decision that has left the Kubuntu community up in arms.

Mark Shuttleworth does back the decision, saying that the “UCC is entitled to choose who they will recognise as their counterparts and representatives in sub-communities like Kubuntu”.

A stalemate between two stable mates. Where this goes next remains to be seen.

Announcing GitTorrent: A Decentralized GitHub

At his blog, Chris Ball announces “GitTorrent,” his new project designed to let developers host Git repositories on BitTorrent. The system takes advantage of Git’s ability to run over arbitrary network protocols. “We ask for the commit we want and connect to a node with BitTorrent, but once connected we conduct this Smart Protocol negotiation in an overlay connection on top of the BitTorrent wire protocol, in what’s called a BitTorrent Extension. Then the remote node makes us a packfile and tells us the hash of that packfile, and then we start downloading that packfile from it and any other nodes who are seeding it using Standard BitTorrent. We can authenticate the packfile we receive, because after we uncompress it we know which Git commit our graph is supposed to end up at; if we don’t end up there, the other node lied to us, and we should try talking to someone else instead.” The project is, obviously, a new one that still has important ground to cover—such as dealing with comments or pull requests—but there are interesting ideas to consider already.

Ubuntu MATE 14.04 Released

This release is unusual in that it is based on Ubuntu MATE 14.04
but adds a number of new features and fixes many bugs. Although
this is a 14.04 release you can consider it a newer version than
14.10 but many of the changes outlined below have already been
released to Ubuntu MATE 14.10 via updates.

AWS Elastic Beanstalk Adds Preconfigured Docker Platform

The ‘Preconfigured Docker’ platforms are delivered as Docker containers allowing you to develop and test your applications locally using the same container that your application will be deployed to on Elastic Beanstalk.

In order to help you to realize these benefits, we are announcing a preview of our new
container management service, EC2 Container Service (or ECS for short).

This service will make it easy for you to run any number of Docker_containers across a managed cluster of _Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud(EC2) instances using powerful APIs and other tools. You do not
have to install cluster management software, purchase and maintain the cluster hardware, or match your hardware
inventory to your software needs when you use ECS. You simply launch some instances in
a cluster, define some tasks, and start them. ECS is built around a scalable,
fault-tolerant,
multi-tenant base that takes care of all of the details of cluster management on your
behalf.

The Switch To Systemd Will Likely Occur For Ubuntu 15.04

Among the bugs that need to be addressed for the switch to happen is needing some AppArmor fixes, support for Ubuntu working in a LXC container with systemd, working cryptsetup integration with systemd during the boot process, and other changes. Some of the other work needed includes bringing up the network enablement in a good manner, NFS improvements, improving Plymouth integration, validating behavior for various packages, etc. While there’s a lot of work that needs to be done to clear it for integration, the consensus expressed during today’s Ubuntu Online Summit was, “generally we are ready to switch now.”

What’s particularly rad about this tutorial is that the photos are processed using 100% organic, free and open-source software. That means it’s, of course, free of cost but also you’re free to modify the software exactly how you want. Furthermore, as it’s open-source, you are free to examine the inner guts of the software as much as you like and, should you wish to, you can modifications or even contribute advancements to the software yourself! You don’t need to worry about the cost of forced upgrades or deliberate obsolescence. It’s yours. =)

Matt’s Howto:

Despite valiant attempts in making the iPhone music compatible with distros such as Ubuntu (or Linux distros in general), libimobiledevice has met with limited success in music syncing. Worse yet, Ubuntu One music sync isn’t quite stable enough to use on a regular basis yet. Therefore during the segment I made two very different recommendations – either buy an Android phone (best). Of if you’re in a contract like I am, consider buying a great MP3 player such as one from iRiver or Sandisk. If however, you want an MP3 player that is in fact, using Apple tech. Then I’d suggest you head over to eBay and look for this query: “ipod a1199”. Buy it at auction, you can get this for a great price.

So how does one make this work? If you remember from the segment, I recommend using Gparted to make sure the iPod is completely wiped. But follow these directions to make sure you don’t delete something needed, like a hidden partition.
gp

1) Plugin the iPod to your computer, close any software or dialogs that appear.
2) Assuming you have gparted already installed, run the program.
3) Don’t worry about deleting your active partitions, as they will be locked. But if you run a dual-boot PC, be mindful before deleting anything.
4) Look to the upper right, select the /dev/ pull down menu. You will be selecting the dev device with the least amount of space. In my case, it was 1.89 GiB.
5) You will see either two or three partitions available, one of them is FAT32. Ignoring the others, select the FAT32 partition.
6) With the FAT32 partition right clicked and selected, choose unmount. This frees up the partition for changes.
7) Right click the partition again, and select format to> FAT32.
8) Click the apply button - aka the green checkmark at the top of the menu. Then click apply.
9) Disconnect the iPod, then allow the iPod to reboot itself. When completed, it will appear with a dialog asking you to choose your default language.
10) Now plug the iPod back into the PC.
11) Choose to open the iPod with Banshee.
12) On the bottom left, you will see the device has appeared. As per the segment, you can right click it and give it a better name if you like.
13) Left clicking on the device, the main screen dialog presents you with the option of setting up how the sync preferences work.
I recommend keeping things set to manual. This simply means the checkbox for Sync when first plugged in, remains unchecked.
14) Select the music sync preference, then choose one of the following:

Sync from entire library – if you want all songs synced. This most likely, will not include existing playlists.

or

Sync from “some playlist name” – this will include only the music from the selected playlist.

With the option selected, look to the upper right, then click on Sync. During this process, don’t disconnect.

Problem solving:

“Wow Matt, that was awesome! I just hosed my iPod and it’s not disconnecting! It’s frozen at 23%. ”

Answer:

Don’t worry, just unplug it and use Gparted to reset the iPod as described above. No harm no foul.

Remember, I recommend using a Linux friendly device like an Android phone or even better, one of the Sandisk/iRiver devices above. They offer less frustration with Apple specific databases. But using an older iPod nano like this is a cheaper alternative.

Matt’s Howto: WebcamStudio

For months now, I’ve received requests to do a how-to on WebcamStudio. I’ve held off on this, since the developer has stated outright that the software is about to go under some heavy changes. Still, I am the co-pilot on the project so to speak, so I thought I’d throw everyone a bone and show them how to run WebcamStudio on Ustream.

You can download WebcamStudio from this link. https://www.ws4gl.org/download/installing-on-ubuntu
This segment demonstrates how you can run multiple webcams, plus how you can even add in some transitions as well on the Wild Dog PC from System76.com during a live broadcast.

Flash troubles with Ustream? If you find that Flash is giving you the allow/deny box and you cannot click into it, try this below.

1- Visit this url
https://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager06.html

2- Next, look for a reference to the site giving you trouble. In my case, it was static-cdn1.ustream.tv

3- Highlight the static-cdn1.ustream.tv entry with your mouse, then choose always allow.

4- Close the browser, then re-open it and visit Ustream once again, then try to broadcast again. Both your audio and video will work.

5- Now close the browser again, open up webcam studio, then visit Ustream to broadcast once again. Once there, choose the video source pull down for WebcamStudio. Audio source, should be your webcam or USB headset.
