Does Systemd Makes Linux Complex, Error-Prone, and Unstable?

We are a small team at _ungleich_and we simply don’t have the time to fix problems caused by systemd on a daily basis. This is even without calculating the security risks that come with systemd. Our objective is to create a great, easy-to-use platform for VM hosting, not to walk a tightrope.

Context on Conservancy’s Filing for Summary Judgment with the TTAB

Therefore we’ve proceeded today with the most expedient defense available to us:
a summary judgment motion which can be read on the USPTO’s website. As a
non-lawyer, I explain in this blog post some details of that motion and its
supporting documents in more mundane, non-legal terms.

Snaps & automatic updates prove popular with email client, Mailspring

In the latest interview with a snap developer, we spoke to Ben Gotow who is the lead maintainer of Mailspring, a free, modern email client for Linux, Windows, and macOS. Originally started and open-sourced by Nylas in California, Ben took on the project earlier this year after Nylas changed course and stopped development. Mailspring has more than 10k active users on Linux, and will offer the snap as the preferred install method beginning from this week.

“The vision for Canonical is to provide the platform that you see everywhere other than the personal domain. We won’t make a dent in phone or PCs. But pretty much your entire data center runs Linux and every other thing in the room is running Linux,” Shuttleworth said. “Can we help deliver that innovation and do it in a format that is secure, reliable and very, very cheap? That’s an interesting set of challenges.”

Steam now lets developers know how many users want their game on Mac and Linux

Valve has made a change to the developer side of Steam that gives developers a breakdown of the different platforms people choose when adding a game to their wishlist.

This is helpful because it also shows platforms that the game does not currently support, letting the developer know how much interest there is for ports on platforms other than Windows. This is obviously only limited to PC operating systems, so Mac, Linux, and SteamOS.

Open Source Replacements for Centralized Services and Platforms

It’s all about the platform, building the biggest platform, with the most engaged users, with the most control.

YouTube is a platform, Patreon is also a platform. It feels like the walls are closing in tighter and tighter than ever.

Early Linux users watched this as Microsoft used the position of their platform to keep Linux off the desktop.

But now these platform wars happen at an exponential rate across every tech category. Recently Google started blocking YouTube on Echo Show's because Amazon doesn't sell Nest cams and Chromecasts (amongst others).

It's always the users that lose these platform wars, and the large corporations don't care about the collateral damage.

But are we starting to see the cracks in these platform's grip?

Open Source YouTube Replacement

PeerTube

Federated (ActivityPub) video streaming platform using P2P (BitTorrent) directly in the web browser with WebTorrent and Angular.

We can’t build a FOSS video streaming alternatives to YouTube, Dailymotion, Vimeo… with a centralized software. One organization alone cannot have enough money to pay bandwidth and video storage of its server.

So we need to have a decentralized network (as Diaspora for example).

But it’s not enough because one video could become famous and overload the server.
It’s the reason why we need to use a P2P protocol to limit the server load.
Thanks to WebTorrent, we can make P2P (thus bittorrent) inside the web browser right now.

Open Source Patreon Replacement

Liberapay

Liberapay is a recurrent donations platform.

Dash Crypto Currency — Dash

At Dash’s core is a unique fully-incentivized peer-to-peer network. Miners are rewarded for securing the blockchain and masternodes are rewarded for validating, storing and serving the blockchain to users.

Masternodes represent a new layer of network servers that work in highly secure clusters called quorums to provide a variety of decentralized services, like instant transactions, privacy and governance, while eliminating the threat of low-cost network attacks.

Open Source Twitter Replacement

  • SegWit2x Bitcoin fork called off — “Although we strongly believe in the need for a larger blocksize, there is something we believe is even more important: keeping the community together,” Belshe said. “Unfortunately, it is clear that we have not built sufficient consensus for a clean blocksize upgrade at this time. Continuing on the current path could divide the community and be a setback to Bitcoin’s growth.”
  • Eco friendly Bitcoin competitor announced — Cohen has just started a new company called Chia Network that will launch a cryptocurrency based on proofs of time and storage rather than bitcoin’s electricity-burning proofs of work. Essentially, Chia will harness cheap and abundant unused storage space on hard drives to verify its blockchain.

  • CrossOver enables Windows apps on ChromeOS — CodeWeavers has now announced the availability of their Wine-powered CrossOver software for Chrome OS.
  • Canonical wants volunteers to create art for Ubuntu — A new theme based on Adwaita, the default GNOME GTK theme.
  • Steam Linux client turns 5 — It was on 6 November 2012 when the Steam Linux beta roll-out began and gained more steam as the year came to a close.
  • Munich votes to return to Windows — That means, that Munich will transition to Microsoft Windows 10 in a 2 year phase (till 2020) on 29,000 pcs. The cost for this transition is actually confidential, but is estimated to be more than 100 million euros (more than 116 million US dollars).
  • Apple relicenses CUPS — The CUPS Common UNIX Printing System up to now had been developed under the GPLv2 license while now Apple will be switching it to the Apache 2.0 software license.

Microsoft Is Buying Mobile Cross-Platform Development Company Xamarin

Xamarin Joins MS

Microsoft announced today that it has acquired Xamarin, a company that allows developers to build fully native apps across several platforms from a single shared code base.

Linux users campaign after Microsoft ‘neglects’ Skype with a week of downtime-

The _open letter to Microsoft_said: “It was a shitty move to not update the client for three years, which resulted in this, mostly. It was annoying that you ignored almost every tweet to @SkypeSupport about issues with Skype for Linux. But it is absolutely disgraceful that you dropped the Linux client BEFORE any alternatives are available and without telling your users.”

GPL Violations Related to Combining ZFS and Linux

However, our conclusion is simple: Conservancy and the Linux copyright
holders in the GPL Compliance Project for
Linux Developers
believe that distribution of ZFS binaries is a GPL
violation and infringes Linux’s copyright. We are also concerned that it may
infringe Oracle’s copyrights in ZFS. As such, we again ask Oracle to respect
community norms against license proliferation and simply relicense its
copyrights in ZFS under a GPLv2-compatible license.

TechSNAP Take on SFC ZFS Finding

Canonical’s counter-argument is that “The CDDL cannot apply to the Linux kernel because zfs.ko is a self-contained file system module — the kernel itself is quite obviously not a derivative work of this new file system.”

  • VMware is using parts of the Linux kernel in their proprietary ESXi
product, including the entire SCSI mid-layer, USB support, radix tree
    and many, many device drivers.

    • as is generally known, Linux is licensed under GNU GPLv2, a
      copyleft-style license.
    • VMware has modified all the code they took from the Linux kernel and
integrated them into something they call vmklinux.
    • VMware has modified their proprietary virtualization OS kernel
vmkernel with specific API/symbol to interact with vmklinux
    • at least in earlier versions of ESXi, virtually any block device
access has to go through vmklinux and thus the portions of Linux
      they took
    • vmklinux and vmkernel are dynamically linked object files that are
      linked together at run-time
    • the Linux code they took runs in the same execution context (address
space, stack, control flow) like the vmkernel.

When, in this mode of employment, the CDDL-licensed code implementing the filesystem is combined with the module-specific translation layer and the result is then statically or dynamically linked into the Linux kernel, the resulting binary is licensed to all users under the terms of GPLv2, and only GPLv2, as the license requires. This happens because CDDL gives permission for binary forms of the code it licenses to be released under any license, and the license terms in effect are those of GPLv2. The making of the binary itself does not result in infringement of the kernel copyrights, or a violation of GPLv2’s terms.

“The Nvidia-graphics-modules provides pre-compiled non-free kernel modules. Several lawyers and people believe this to be a violation of the GPL license used by the kernel. This interpretation is consistent with our position on ZFS modules, which we also ship in source code only. As such, the work is not distributable and should be removed from the archive in all suites, ASAP,” Julian Andres Klode said.
