NVIDIA Publishes Patches For Its Driver To Work With Wayland’s Weston

Following NVIDIA publishing a new Linux driver that supports Wayland and Mir alongside X11, a NVIDIA engineer followed through and posted patches of the EGL support changes needed by Wayland’s Weston compositor to support the new driver.

Nvidia Driver Meme

If I understand it correctly, it requires extra patches on wayland egl, which are currently under review on wayland maillist and they were just posted at the same time as the new driver was released.

Linux gaming is much healthier than Steam’s Hardware Survey implies

Here’s one obvious caveat: Steam’s user numbers are growing. So while Linux usage on the Steam Hardware Survey has declined from about 2 percent in March 2013 to 0.91 percent in February 2015, that smaller percentage is from a larger overall user base.

No, Google Isn’t Going To Kill Its Nexus Devices

Every time Google releases a new named and numbered version of Android, it also announces a new Nexus device, built by one of Google’s top manufacturing partners like LG or Samsung. Dave Burke, the head of Android engineering and the Nexus program at Google, says that the company plans to keep doing just that.

“People just get excited by concepts and forget why we do things,” Burke told me in an interview. “We are still invested in Nexus.”

Burke would not discuss Silver. “Android Silver is not something that we are commenting on right now,” he said. But the prospect of Silver doesn’t mean that Nexus is going away.

You can’t build a platform in the abstract, you have to build a device (or devices). So, I don’t think can can or will ever go away. And then, I think Nexus is also interesting in that it is a way of us explaining how we think Android should run. It is a statement, almost a statement of purity in some respects. I don’t see why we would ever turn away from that, it wouldn’t make sense.

YouTube introduces 60fps video and crowdfunding )

First up is the news that YouTube will soon be introducing
support for 48 and 60 frames per second. In the announcement on the
YouTube Creators blog gamers have been singled out as the group
that this will most benefit

Also new is fan funding, which has been hinted at for a while. The feature will allow fans to contribute money to your channel at any time for any reason and will be introduced soon. This will make a huge difference to those whose channels aren’t necessarily big enough to benefit from ad revenue. YouTube has already got a handful of creators to sign up to test this out across both desktop and Android.

The car that outsmarts speed cameras

Speed camera fines could become a thing of the past if Hyundai has its way.

The brand is set to sell a luxury sedan in Australia that is capable of outsmarting speed cameras with a combination of GPS and braking technology.

Speaking in Seoul at the launch of the Hyundai Genesis, company spokesman Guido Schenken told journalists that the car could identify speed cameras and slow down if drivers are going too fast.

Over NSA worries, Germany ends government contract with Verizon | Ars Technica

Germany has opted not to renew its government contract with Verizon, citing concerns over spying by the National Security Agency. The contract will expire in 2015.

In a German-language statement (Google Translate) posted to the Ministry of the Interior’s website, Berlin noted that it needs “an infrastructure with an increased level of security.”

Verizon has maintained the contract since 2010.

“There are indications that Verizon is legally required to provide certain things to the NSA, and that’s one of the reasons the cooperation with Verizon won’t continue,” Interior Ministry spokesman Tobias Plate told reporters, according to the Associated Press.

Company shuts down after their AWS account compromised, all customer data deleted

  • Code Spaces, a source code hosting and backup service has ceased doing business
  • On June 17th the company came under a DDoS attack, which is apparently business as normal for them
  • Later, they found messages in their Amazon Web Services portal, urging them to contact a hotmail address
  • When contacted, the attacker demanded a large ransom
  • When Code Spaces attempted to change their passwords in the AWS control panel, additional administrator accounts added by the attacker were used to delete all EC2 virtual machines, S3 stores and EBS volumes in the account before all accessed could be revoked
  • The most embarrassing part of the situation is the text on the original Code Spaces website:
“Backing up data is one thing, but it is meaningless without a recovery plan, not only that [but also] a recovery plan—and one that is well-practiced and proven to work time and time again,” “Code Spaces has a full recovery plan that has been proven to work and is, in fact, practiced.”
  • It is not clear what the Code Spaces backup strategy was, but it seemed to involve the same Amazon account
  • In general, the idea with an “offsite” backup is to separate it from a failure of the primary. If you keep the backups for your database beside the database server and your office burns down, what good are the backups
  • What if Amazon suffered a catastrophic data loss? or what if your account is compromised?
  • The backups should have at least been in a different Amazon account that was very strictly controlled, or better yet, stored in some other service
  • It is still unclear how the account was compromised, but it seems likely that Code Spaces was not making use of the Amazon’s Multi-Factor Authentication service, which offers either a mobile phone app, or two different types of hardware authenticators (key fob and credit-card style)

Poorly anonymized NYC Taxi data, de-anonymized

  • Under an Open Data initiative, the New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission released the anonymized GPS logs of all taxi trips in 2013 (173 million trips)
  • Chris Whong got a hold of this data and did some interesting stuff with it
  • When he was done with it, he posted the data for everyone
  • Developer Vijay Pandurangan took a look at the data and noticed that the medallion and hack numbers appeared to simply be MD5 hashes
  • In particular, the driver with ID# CFCD208495D565EF66E7DFF9F98764DA appeared to have an impossibly large number of trips
  • Turns out, that is the MD5 hash of “0”, cases where the data was unavailable
  • Realizing that the data was only anonymized using MD5, and knowing the structure of a drivers license # (5-7 characters, with specific characters being numbers or letters), he was able to brute force all 24 million combinations in only 2 minutes using a single CPU
  • Once this was done, he had the original un-anonymized data
  • Using other websites, it is possible to link the medallion and hack numbers to the owners names
  • Original Post
  • Additional Coverage – Ars Technica
  • To prevent this, there are a number of approaches, the fastest but weakest is a ‘secret key’. Instead of md5(hack#) just do md5(SUPERLONGSECRETKEYhack#), as long as the attacker doesn’t know the secret key, and it is long enough to make guessing it impractical, the data would remain anonymized
  • Another option is to use the md5 hash of the encrypted form of the value. However this eventually just relies on a secret key as well. However, if the data never needs to be anonymized, a very strong key can be used, and that key can then be destroyed, making decryption impossible.

Hackers attack hedge fund for monetary gain

  • BAE systems, a British defense contractor that also specializes in cyber security, was called in to investigate after computers at a hedge fund were hacked
  • The attackers somehow infiltrated the HFT (High Frequency Trading) system, and injected delays of several hundred microseconds into the order entry system
  • This causes the Hedge Fund to miss out on profits it could have made on the trades
  • It is suspected, that the attackers capitalized on this to make those profits themselves
  • “Hedge funds “really have inadequate cybersecurity as a whole” and the attacks threaten to undermine the systems used globally for high-speed trading, said Tom Kellerman, chief cyber security officer for Trend Micro Inc. ”

  • Banking malware stole 36 million euros

    • The Zeus trojan was used as part of a sophisticated malware attack that was able to steal an estimated 36 million euros from over 30,000 customers based at 30 different banks in Germany, The Netherlands, Spain and Italy
    • The trojan infected victims’ PCs and Mobile phones, and intercepted their attempts to interact with their banks
    • Victims were tricked into infecting their Mobiles when the trojan on the PC claimed it ‘needed to upgrade your online banking software’, and asked for additional information, including the number of your mobile phone
    • The mobile version of the trojan targeted both Blackberry and Android devices
    • The mobile infection was the key to the success of the trojan, as it allowed the attackers to intercept SMS messages containing the ‘TAN’ (Transaction Authentication Number) that the banks would send, and would need to be entered to confirm any large transactions
    • This allowed the attackers to transfer money out of the victims account without alerting the victim, and the banks saw the transactions passing the additional fraud verification steps (SMS TAN), so were not alerted to a problem
    • The trojan would initiate transfers ranging from 500 to 250,000 euros to various accounts around europe, where the funds would then be withdrawn by mules
    • The Zeus trojan is also known for modifying the pages returned by online banking, to show the expected account balance and transactions. It would hide the transfers, and adjust the displayed balance to be correct, even after additional valid transactions. (See previous episode on man-in-the-browser attacks)
    • The attack consisted of a number of steps:
    • Victim accidentally visits malicious site, or is tricked into clicking a link by a phishing email or social media attack
    • The victim visit their bank’s site and log in to their account to make a transaction
    • The trojan modifies the code of the bank page, prompting the user to enter their mobile phone number and operating system
    • The collected information is sent back to the attacker’s C&C server
    • The attacker then sends a text message to the victim device, prompting the user to download the Zitmo (Zeus in the mobile) trojan, disguised as an ‘upgrade to the security of the online banking system’
    • Each time the victim logs into their online banking, the trojan initiates transfer of money out of the victim’s account using their real credentials
    • The banks recognize this as a large, high risk transaction, and as such, delay the transaction and request the user complete 2 factor authentication, the bank sends a TAN number to the user’s mobile
    • The TAN SMS is intercepted by the trojan on the victim’s mobile device and delivered to the attacker’s C&C server, the victim never knows they received the text message
    • Javascript injected into the online banking page via the PC trojan receives the TAN from the C&C server and authorizes the transfer
    • The Eurograbber attack is now complete and the attackers transfer money out of a victim’s account
    • This attack highlights the need for better phishing prevention by financial institutions
    • All financial institutions should be using SPF and cryptographically signing all legitimate emails with DKIM. Then some type of DNS whitelist, that says ‘any domain on this list, will ALWAYS have a DKIM signature, if it does not, this email should be rejected’, similar to the recent HSTS standard for HTTPS

Researcher developes 0day exploit against Samsung SmartTVs

    • Luigi Auriemma, a researcher for Malta based security firm ReVuln, has developed a number of 0day exploits against Samsung SmartTVs
    • He has apparently found some signature that allows him to scan networks to find the IP addresses of any connected SmartTV devices
    • The exploit allows him to remotely image all storage devices connected to the TV, including the internal storage, but also any USB devices that happened to be attached
    • The exploit could also allow an attacker to install custom firmware, malicious applications, operate any microphones or cameras connected to the TV, steal credentials stored on the device, overwrite the root certificate store to allow spoofing of HTTPS sites (allowing a successful man-in-the-middle attack), or keep a log of all content played on the TV
    • The exploit can also be used to remotely control the device, using a feature allowing the TV to be controlled from a smartphone. This allows the attacker to have the same control over the device they would have if they were in the room, further allowing them to exploit the device
    • Technical details were not disclosed, ReVuln is currently selling the vulnerability
    • If your TV is connected to the internet behind a NAT router or firewall, such that it cannot be connected to directly from the internet, it is less vulnerable. However you still have to consider the case of an attacker cracking your WiFi and being able to access the device via the LAN, or SmartTV devices connected to office networks, as well as those devices in bars, cafes, hotels and the like.
    • Luigi has previously disclosed other flaws in the Samsung SmartTVs

Researchers develop attacks that could cripple GPS receivers

    • Using $2500 worth of gear, researchers from Carnegie Mellon were able to disrupt both customer and professional grade GPS receivers
    • “A 45-second crafted GPS message could bring down up to 30 percent of the global GPS Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS), while other attacks could take down 20 percent of NTRIP networks
    • Attacks were conducted against seven receiver brands including Magellan, Garmin, GlobalSat, uBlox, LOCOSYS and iFly 700, whereas Trimble was working with researchers to push out a patch for its affected products
    • These new attacks are quite different than existing GPS spoofing attacks, the new research covers a much larger attack vector “by viewing GPS as a computer system”. This included analysis of GPS protocol messages and operating systems, the GPS software stack and how errors affect dependent systems
    • The attacks include messing with the time, since GPS is used as a source of clock synchronization, allowing the attackers to trigger the UNIX epoch rollover or otherwise tamper with devices
    • Full research paper

    An Apple a Day

    • In a study the consumption of one apple a day for four weeks lowered levels of a substance linked to hardening of the arteries by 40 percent blood
    • The low down
    • The difference between eating an apple or not was similar to that found between people with normal coronary arteries versus those with coronary artery disease
    • Apples seemed to lower LDL, “bad” cholesterol, levels during the study [LDL, low-density lipoprotein]
    • The cholesterol LDL is more likely to promote inflammation and can cause tissue damage.
    • There was a tremendous effect against LDL being oxidized with just one apple a day for four weeks
    • Significance
    • The study also showed that simply taking capsules containing polyphenols, a type of antioxidant found in apples, had a similar, but not as large of an effect.
    • The researchers believing that polyphenols in the apples contribute to the effects and tried to extract them
    • The extracted polyphenols did register a measurable effect although not as strong as straight apples

    – SPACECRAFT UPDATE –

    SpaceX Dragon Spacecraft re-supply mission

    • The flight, referred to as Commercial Resupply Services–1 (CRS–1), is the first of a dozen resupply flights for which NASA is paying SpaceX $1.6 billion to fly.
    • Mission Patch
    • The first of NASA’s contracted cargo resupply flights to the International Space Station now has its own mission patch
    • The CRS–1 mission patch, which borrows its shape from the Dragon capsule, shows the solar-powered spacecraft grappled by the space station’s Canadarm2 robotic arm as it is being brought in to connect with the stations Harmony module
    • Almost camouflaged with the patch’s green-colored North American continent is a four leaf clover. The symbol for luck, the clover has become a regular feature on SpaceX’s insignias since the Hawthorne, Calif.-based company’s first successful Falcon 1 launch in September 2008
    • Embroidered versions of the patch may be in the mission’s Official Flight Kit (OFK) of mementos to be presented to NASA and SpaceX team members for a job well done.
    • Launch
    • Space Exploration Technologies, or SpaceX, launched its second-station bound Dragon capsule atop the company’s Falcon 9 rocket at 8:35 p.m. EDT (0035 GMT Oct. 8) from Complex 40 at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station
    • Engine Failure
    • 79 seconds into the launch one out of nine of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 suddenly lost pressure and was shut down [it did not explode as they continued to receive data]
    • None of the other 8 engines were affected and the Falcon 9 rocket re-calculated a new launch profile to arrive in the correct orbit
    • Careful analysis of all data to find the cause, identify the problem and find solutions for future missions
    • Eleven minutes after launch, when the Dragon was safely in orbit, two 15-foot (4.6 m) solar arrays were deployed to provide power to the spacecraft.
    • The ‘debris’ seen falling from the engine is most likely protective fairings around the engine from engine pressure releases

    • @StarbaseUGC | SpaceX Falcon Engine Failure
    • Orbcomm satellite
    • Orbcomm operates a global machine-to-machine messaging service using a constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit.
    • Its second-generation constellation is designed to provide faster and higher-volume messaging, and also to provide a global Automatic Identification Service on maritime traffic.
    • The New Jersey-based company had a piggybacked payload on the Falcon 9 launch, the OG2
    • The failure in one of Falcon 9’s engines prevented the OG2 to be deployed into an orbit that was lower than intended
    • Both companies are working together in communication with the satellite to determine if it can be raised into an operational orbit
    • No statement has been released as of the filming of todays show but it is thought that they will be able to get a few months work out of the prototype
    • Plans are still in place to launch 17 more OG2 satellites on two Falcon 9 rockets in 2013 and 2014
    • Sweet Treat for the Space Station Crew
    • GLACIER, or General Laboratory Active Cryogenic ISS Experiment Refrigerator, is primarily used to preserve science samples that require temperatures between minus 301 and 39 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 160 and 4 degrees Celsius)
    • The mini-fridge sized freezer has previously flown aboard the space shuttle and will be used to return frozen samples back to Earth
    • The vanilla with swirled chocolate sauce ice cream cups won’t melt on their three-day journey to the space station thanks to a freezer on board the Dragon capsule
    • The brand of ice cream flying in the Dragon’s GLACIER is Blue Bell Creameries, a Texas dairy that has a strong fan base in Houston
    • Blue Bell ice cream has been flown to the space station before. The creamery’s cups first launched to the orbiting laboratory in 2006 on board the space shuttle Atlantis
    • Of Note
    • The Dragon Spacecraft should arrive at the space station on Wed when it will be captured using the station arm
    • It’s two week visit will conclude on Oct 28 for a splashdown off the coast of S California

    Shuttle Endeavour Parade Coming

    • Last time on SciByte
    • iPhone Nurse & “Warp Drive” | SciByte 64 [September 25, 2012]
    • The low down
    • Nicknamed Mission 26, pre-dawn Friday morning [Oct 12] Endeavour will starts it’s 2-day 12 mile journey from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to its new exhibition at the California Science Center (CSC)
    • Mission 26 will take Endeavour through Inglewood and Los Angeles, including passing over the 405 freeway
    • Endeavour will make the journey atop a modified NASA overland transporter, driven most of the time by four self powered, computer controlled vehicles.
    • Los Angeles and Inglewood police departments have said that public viewing will be limited on Friday until Endeavour’s overnight crossing of the 405 is completed
    • Although original plans included a Toyota stock truck to tow the shuttle on its last quarter-mile (400 meters) to the science center. Instead, the pickup will be used to move Endeavour over the freeway due to its computer-driven transporters not being cleared for use on the overpass.
    • Travel Logistics
    • Police will have to shut down streets and sidewalks
    • Crews will have to temporarily remove and reinstall power lines, traffic signals and street lights
    • Although the route did involve the removal of several hundred trees, for every tree that was removed, up to four trees of higher quality will be planted in its place, in addition 2-years of of tree maintenance will be provided

    Dilithium Crystals

    • A new fusion impulse engine could cut the travel time to Mars from six months to six weeks
    • The low down
    • Since the sponsors of the project have ties to military funding the project will first be available for military uses, possibly for nuclear testing equipment
    • The process still has a few things to work through such as a way to harness the fusion energy
    • Also in question is turning the power generated by the fusion into thrust for an engine
    • Any craft that used this system would need to be assembled in space
    • This technology also has applications far beyond military or space exploration
    • Even with these issues scientists on the project are hoping to make the system a reality by 2030
    • The scientists are hoping to make impulse drive a reality by 2030
    • Of Note
    • The fuel that they are calling “basically dilithium crystals” is deuterium [a stable isotope of hydrogen] and Li6 [a stable isotope of the metal lithium] in a crystal structure

    SCIENCE CALENDAR

    Looking back

    • Oct 10, 1846 : 166 years ago : Triton : Neptune’s moon, Triton, is discovered by William Lassell while he was observing the newly discovered planet Neptune. He was attempting to confirm his observation of the previous week, that Neptune had a ring. Instead he discovered that Neptune had a satellite, Triton. Lassell soon proved that the ring he thought he had seen was a product of his new telescope’s distortion. This picture of Triton was taken in 1989 by the only spacecraft ever to pass Triton: Voyager 2, which found fascinating terrain, a thin atmosphere, and even evidence for ice volcanoes on this world of peculiar orbit and spin. Ironically, Voyager 2 also confirmed the existence of complete thin rings around Neptune – but these would have been quite invisible to Lassell!

So what is it? It\’s a tablet called the C71 built by ZeniThink, sold under various names.

ZeniThink appears to be competing in the cheap Android space, and some of their models have some real design flair to them.

Zenithink were one of the first Android tablet makers in China, and were responsible for the original Android ePad almost 2 years ago.

The C71 is their cheapest unit, and it also happens to be the unit the highly anticipated KDE Spark Tablet will be built around.

    Pros:

    Price. $150 shipped.
    802.11n
    Very current Android
    Ships Rooted!
    Screen is bright
    5-Point Capacitive Touchscreen
    HDIMI Out
VERY easy to re-flash. Just hold down Power and Volume Down at boot.

There is no bluetooth, which would have been nice.
    No 3G
    Vertical viewing angle is limited.
4GB of Storage, makes it tight for apps. Gonna need a TF Memory Card
Speaker on the Back, so audio is always away from you.

    Build Quality

You can\’t complain much at $150. But it feels very sturdy, but a bit cheap. Some dirt under the screen (very noticeable in one spot) and light bleed from the LEDs.

    Battery:

    3000mAh
    Music: About 8 hours
    Video: About 3-4 hours
    Standby: About two days

    A Different Tactic:

Unlike Apple, Motorola, Samsung, and many others. ZeniThink is going for the direct sale, and white label approach. Mine was labeled and sold as the UPAD
