Another Bird Flu Outbreak

Most of the human H7N9 cases have occurred in Shanghai or the surrounding region. But there have been two cases in Beijing, which is nearly 800 miles away from Shanghai.

Most people infected have been hospitalized with severe respiratory problems and 17 have died. But Hartl says there have been a handful of mild cases. \”At least one person wasn\’t hospitalized.\” And, one boy in Beijing tested positive for the virus but showed no symptoms at all.

Boston Bombing

A camera shot first moments after deadly explosions in Boston, Massachusetts. At least three people, including an eight-year-old, have been killed and more than a hundred injured after two explosions hit the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

There is conflicting information as to whether someone has been arrested in connection with the Boston Marathon bombings.

A federal law enforcement source told CNN\’s Fran Townsend that someone was arrested. But two senior administration officials and another federal official then told Townsend that there had been a misunderstanding among officials and that no one has been arrested.

Two Justice Department officials also told CNN\’s Joe Johns that there has been no arrest, and that authorities were looking into where the earlier confusion came from.

Amid a frenzy of reporting on Wednesday that a suspect had been arrested in the Boston Marathon bombing case, NBC News stood out as the only network reporting that no arrest had been made. In the face of increasing evidence that they were incorrect, NBC News stuck to their guns and insisted that there had been no arrest. Within minutes, it became clear that NBC News was the only network to get the story right — no arrest had been made in the Boston bombing case.

\”Editing should maintain the integrity of the photographic images\’ content and context,\” according to the ethics code for the National Press Photographers Association, a professional society. \”Do not manipulate images … in any way that can mislead viewers or misrepresent subjects.\”

Poison Letters

Federal agents on Wednesday arrested a suspect in the mailing of letters to President Barack Obama and a U.S. senator that initially tested positive for the poison ricin.

The suspect was identified as Paul Kevin Curtis of Tupelo, Miss., federal officials told NBC News. They said he may appear in court as early as Wednesday night.

FBI spokesman Paul Bresson said preliminary tests on the letter to Obama showed evidence of ricin, a powerful toxin that is generally considered to be ineffective as a weapon for mass terrorism.

A letter sent to a Mississippi senator tested positive for the poison ricin, federal authorities revealed Tuesday, adding to security concerns in the Capitol after the Boston Marathon bombing.

Ricin comes from the castor bean plant, and is the most poisonous, naturally occurring substance, according to Cornell University Department of Animal Sciences. The part of the plant that is poisonous to people, animals, and insects, is the bean

US tortured detainees\’ after 9/11 attack

A two-year study by the Constitution Project determined that there was \”no
justification\” for the so-called \”enhanced interrogation techniques\”
deployed by the George W Bush administration, which it said violated both
international and American law.

\”It is indisputable that the United States engaged in the practice of
torture,\” said the 577-page report by Constitution Project, a high-powered
Washington watchdog.

The US military detention centre at Guantanamo Bay is the symbol of everything the country has done wrong since the September 11 attacks, according to a bipartisan group of former officials and academics.

The group, which reviewed US detention and rendition practices, has concluded that US interrogators committed torture while questioning detainees, and there\’s no proof the torture gave authorities any information to prevent future attacks.

Seasoned interrogators have confirmed the report finding that harsh interrogation techniques were ineffective and there was no rationale for their use, whether practical or moral.

CISPA is Coming…

Yesterday, we reached two important milestones in the fight to stop CISPA! Just after surpassing 50,000 petition signatures, a formal statement from the White House announced President Obama\’s intention to veto CISPA if it passes Congress in its current form. But with several amendments to the bill pending that could make him rethink his veto threat (even if they do little to protect our privacy), we need to keep the pressure on.

One of the key things we\’ve seen in the pushback on CISPA is that its backers insist that people arguing against it don\’t really understand how the bill works, and that it does protect privacy. CISPA sponsor Rep. Mike Rogers himself took to Twitter this morning to tell the EFF that it\’s misreading his bill. But, of course, as we\’ve seen, it seems that Rogers himself is the one being misleading when it comes to privacy. If he truly believed in privacy protections, he would have supported a variety of straightforward amendments that made it clear how privacy could be protected. But he didn\’t. Instead, he clearly left it open for abuse.

Global internet slows after “biggest attack in history”

The internet around the world has been slowed down in what security experts are describing as the biggest cyber-attack of its kind in history.

Spam-fighting organization Spamhaus said Wednesday that it had been buffeted by a massive distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack since mid-March, apparently from groups angry at being blacklisted by the Geneva-based group.

“It is a small miracle that we’re still online,” Spamhaus researcher Vincent Hanna said in an interview.

FBI Pursuing Real-Time Gmail Spying Powers as “Top Priority” for 2013

That’s because a 1994 surveillance law called the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act only allows the government to force Internet providers and phone companies to install surveillance equipment within their networks. But it doesn’t cover email, cloud services, or online chat providers like Skype. Weissmann said that the FBI wants the power to mandate real-time surveillance of everything from Dropbox and online games (“the chat feature in Scrabble”) to Gmail and Google Voice. “Those communications are being used for criminal conversations,” he said.

Mayor Bloomberg Unveils $12 Million Ad Campaign for Gun Checks

New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, a fierce proponent of restrictions on firearms, said he will bankroll a $12-million TV advertising blitz in 13 states to pressure individual senators from both parties during the two-week congressional recess.

Cyprus’ Gone Wild

With banks due to reopen on Thursday after nearly two weeks, Finance Minister Michael Sarris said capital controls will be “within the realms of reason” and a business leader said he had been told they would affect only international transactions.

They’ve just gotten rid of all our dreams, everything we’ve worked for, everything we’ve achieved up until now, what our parents have achieved,"

CEO Yiannis Kypri said he was summoned to the Central Bank early on Wednesday and asked to submit his resignation.

“The reason I was given was that, based on the resolution decree recently passed by parliament and upon demands of the troika, an administrator had been appointed at the Bank,” Kypri said in a written statement.

No one knows exactly how much money has left Cyprus’ banks, or where it has gone. The two banks at the centre of the crisis – Cyprus Popular Bank, also known as Laiki, and Bank of Cyprus – have units in London which remained open throughout the week and placed no limits on withdrawals. Bank of Cyprus also owns 80 percent of Russia’s Uniastrum Bank, which put no restrictions on withdrawals in Russia. Russians were among Cypriot banks’ largest depositors.

“I think the Russians were understandably disappointed with this turn of events. They have had a long, successful and happy history and association and this has come partly as a shock despite the fact that many of these things had been rumored,” Cyprus’ finance minister, Michael Sarris, said early on Monday in Brussels.

On Thursday the European Central Bank told Cyprus yesterday to find funding to secure a €10 billion ($12.9 billion) European Union (EU) bailout by Monday, or face a cut-off of ECB credit and the bankruptcy of Cyprus’ banks and government.

The Cypriot government should instead have learned from Iceland: taken over the banks, isolated the bad loans, protected deposits, imposed losses on the wealthy, and used a publicly owned banking sector to rebuild the domestic economy. That would have offered its citizens a better future, almost certainly outside the eurozone. But it would have also encroached on private capital’s privileges and clearly couldn’t be tolerated.

Protests have followed the agreement which called for Popular Bank, the country’s second biggest bank, to be closed down and the imposition of austerity measures.

US’ System Setup to Protect the Bankers?

U.S. attorney nominated by President Barack Obama to lead the SEC. Her financial disclosures say that upon leaving New York-based Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, the law firm will give her $42,500 a month in retirement pay for life, or more than $500,000 a year."*

Mary Jo White, Obama’s nominee who will likely be confirmed as head of the SEC- the government agency in charge of regulating the banks- may not have the people’s best interests at hand. She’ll be paid a “retirement for life” from her former white-collar defense law firm that defends bankers.

China’s navy holds landing exercises near disputed islands

“The operational goal in the East China Sea is to wear out the Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force and the Japan Coast Guard,” said James Holmes, a maritime strategy expert at the Newport, Rhode Island U.S. Naval War College.

China’s increasingly powerful navy paid a symbolic visit to the country’s southernmost territorial claim deep in the South China Sea this week as part of military drills in the disputed Spratly Islands involving amphibious landings and aircraft.

Military tension is rising elsewhere in Asia. A Chinese naval taskforce has reached the southernmost part of the South China Sea, which it claims as its own – to the annoyance of neighbouring nations.

Fed pushes big bro drones despite public outcry in US

It appears the sky is the limit for U.S. law enforcement, with aerial surveillance drones set to be used domestically. But Capitol Hill has met some firm resistance to the plans. RT’s Gayane Chichyakyan reports on the attempts to fight back against the federal project.

Third North Korean Nuclear Test

A North Korean nuclear test draws international condemnation, modest U.N. sanctions and expressions of hope in the United States that China will finally rein in its ally.

Dorner Manhunt Comes to an End

A lot of people don\’t seem to know what a \”burner\” is. A burner is an incendiary tear gas canister that is specifically made to start a fire. These were used in Waco on the branch Davidians. At the time the FBI claimed the cult member started the fire, but much later the FBI admitted to using incendiary tear gas canisters to burn the Davidians out of hiding.

A tear gas canister ignited a fire at a City Terrace area home surrounded by SWAT officers as part of a standoff the morning Wednesday Jan. 16, 2013, according to sheriff\’s deputies.

Hoping to end the standoff, law enforcement authorities first lobbed “traditional” tear gas into the cabin. When that did not work, they opted to use CS gas canisters, which are known in law enforcement parlance as incendiary tear gas. These canisters have significantly more chance of starting a fire.

Obama’s 2013 State of the Union Address

The main difference between the White House executive order and CISPA is that CISPA would allow private companies (like Facebook or Google) to share details about cyber attacks with the government, whereas the executive order is a one-way street, with the feds sharing information with the private sector. CISPA opponents were concerned about immunity clauses that they said would incentivize companies to hand over customer information without hesitation.

DHS engages \’Constitution free\’ zones around US border

According to the US Department of Homeland Security, anyone who is within a 100 mile radius of the US border is subject to the search and seizure of any and all electronic devices for no apparent reason. These zones known as \”Constitution free\” zones have many privacy advocates speaking out against the new policy and fear that this new procedure is a violation of civil liberties for American citizens.

US senators propose assassination court to screen drone targets

The idea was bandied about during Thursday\’s confirmation hearing for CIA director nominee John Brennan, who fueled the talk by saying he thinks the concept is \”worthy of discussion.\” The nominee, as a vocal supporter of the targeted-killing program, has come under scrutiny for what some lawmakers see as the administration\’s unchecked power to kill, even if the target is an American citizen.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said as part of an effort to regulate the killing, she wants to review proposals to create something similar to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court — which reviews requests for wiretaps against suspected foreign agents — for drone strikes.
Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, is pushing the idea the hardest.

According to his vision, the drone court would be an avenue for U.S. officials to argue in secret before a judge why an American citizen should be targeted for death. He said it would be like \”going to a court for a warrant\” and proving probable cause.
