As my father is soon looking at retirement he is going to lose access his work provided laptop. He has asked me for recommendations on a new machine. I’m considering the possibility of moving him over to Linux. He is technologically competent and not afraid of trying something new but is still more comfortable going with a well-known manufacturer. Immediately my first thought was the Dell XPS 13 as he is familiar with them and they also offer Linux support out of the box which is a huge plus as I can purchase the Windows version so that knows he has the option to fallback to Windows if he ends up not liking Linux. However, after looking into the device it appears that these machines are still affected by Content Adaptive Brightness Control (CABC) that can’t be disabled and coil whine issues. Outside of System76 machines is the XPS 13 still the go-to Linux laptop? Do you have any better recommendations? Thanks.

Here’s a date for your diary: 1 January 2017. It’s the day that physicists are predicting for a great scientific breakthrough: the first direct detection of gravitational waves.

It will be the equivalent of astronomers discovering a new sense. With telescopes, they can already see the universe. By detecting gravitational waves, they will be able to ‘listen’ to it as well. We would be able to ‘hear’ stars colliding with one another, the destruction of matter falling into black holes and the catastrophic detonation of distant massive stars.

Chromium Finally Gets HiDPI Support for Linux After Being Ignored for Three Years – Softpedia

“I’m happy to notice that High DPI is now fully supported in Chromium for Linux starting in Dev Channel. If you don’t have a HighDPI screen, you can still run chromium with the –force-device-scale-factor=2 switch to see how scaling works there,” wrote François Beaufort.

• Full HiDPI support in Chrome is now available in the main branch google-chrome as of version 43.0.2357.2-1 and works out of the box as tested with Gnome and Cinnamon.

Ads Based On Browsing History Are Coming To All Firefox Users

Mozilla has announced plans to launch a feature called “Suggested Tiles,” which will provide sponsored recommendations to visit certain websites when other websites show up in the user’s new tab page. The tiles will begin to show up for beta channel users next week, and the company is asking for feedback. For testing purposes, users will only see Suggested Tiles “promoting Firefox for Android, Firefox Marketplace, and other Mozilla causes.” It’s not yet known what websites will show up on the tiles when the feature launches later this summer. The company says, “With Suggested Tiles, we want to show the world that it is possible to do relevant advertising and content recommendations while still respecting users’ privacy and giving them control over their data.”

Mozilla gives up on its dream of a $25 Firefox smartphone | The Verge

CNET reports that in an email to employees sent out on Thursday, CEO Chris Beard made it clear that the company will soon be changing its mobile strategy. “We have not seen sufficient traction for a $25 phone,” Beard wrote. He went on to say, “We will focus on efforts that provide a better user experience, rather than focusing on cost alone.”

Intel takes on CoreOS with its own container-based Linux

In a detailed article at LWN.net, Intel engineer Arjan van de Ven described Intel’s aim to build a container system “where one can use the isolation of virtual-machine technology along with the deployment benefits of containers.”

The resulting system, Clear Containers, uses Linux’s kernel-native KVM hypervisor, but runs it in such a way that it avoids most of the startup time overhead typically associated with spinning up a KVM instance. Intel also claims it can leverage systemd and a few kernel-level memory-organization tricks to slim down and speed up the process even further.

Linux on a USB Stick for Students

Lernstick is a mobile and secure learning and working environment for school and home that is usually installed on removable media (USB sticks, USB hard disks, SD cards, etc.) so that (almost*) any computer can be booted from these storage media. A hard drive with an installed operation system is no longer necessary. (But optionally, the system can also be installed on internal hard drives.)

GNU dmd

GNU dmd is a “Daemon managing Daemons” (or “Daemons-managing Daemon”?), i.e. a service manager that provides a replacement for the service-managing capabilities of SysV-init (or any other init) with a both powerful and beautiful dependency-based system with a convenient interface. It is intended for use on GNU/Hurd, but it is supposed to work on every POSIX-like system where Guile is available. In particular, it has been tested on GNU/Linux

It’s Been Three Years Since The Big Steam Linux Reveal

Fast forward three years, there’s now more than 1,100 games on Steam for Linux!

Going out this year there’s Source 2 to look forward to seeing, Steam Machines and the Steam Controller expected for release before year end, and SteamOS should be stabilized. There’s also going to be the release of the open-source Intel Vulkan driver financed by Valve for as soon as the Khronos Group releases the first official Vulkan specification.

• Reported Steam Linux Usage Battles To Stay Above 1.0% – Phoronix

This drop to just over 1.0% is the lowest numbers we’ve seen for Linux’s representation on Steam in quite a number of months. However, it’s not a huge surprise.

• Valve Developed An Intel Linux Vulkan GPU Driver – Phoronix

With the Vulkan API still in flux and not finalized until later this year, Valve has been developing their own Intel GPU reference driver for Vulkan to help early adopters boot-strap their code. Valve said during their presentation today at GDC2015 that this Intel Linux driver will be open-sourced, but they haven’t provided a time-frame for doing so.

VMware alleged to have violated Linux’s open source license for years

Linux kernel developer Christoph Hellwig filed the suit in the district court of Hamburg, Germany with funding from the nonprofit Software Freedom Conservancy, which works to “promote, improve, develop, and defend” free and open source software. The case centers on “a combined work that VMware allegedly created by combining their own code (‘vmkernel’) with portions of Linux’s code, which was licensed only under GPLv2,” _the group said in an FAQ describing the lawsuit._

• Conservancy Announces Funding for GPL Lawsuit

Software Freedom Conservancy announces today Christoph Hellwig’s lawsuit against VMware in the district court of Hamburg in Hamburg, Germany. This is the regretful but necessary next step in both Hellwig and Conservancy’s ongoing effort to convince VMware to comply properly with the terms of the GPLv2, the license of Linux and many other Open Source and Free Software included in VMware’s ESXi products.

​No reboot patching comes to Linux 4.0

At the Linux Plumbers Conference in October 2014, the two groups got together and started work on a way to _patch Linux without rebooting that combines the best of both programs. Essentially, what they ended up doing was putting both kpatch and kGraft in the 4.0 Linux kernel._

New App Brings Android Notifications to The GNOME Desktop

The new project is called ‘Nuntius’ and lets notifications received on an Android phone appear on the GNOME desktop.
