Barton’s Blog | To the clouds and beyond…

Four and a half years ago a scrappy skunk works project by the name of “Project Sputnik” was kicked off at Dell to gauge interest in a developer-focused laptop. The project received an amazing amount of interest and support from the community and as result, nine months later this project became an official product — the ultra-mobile XPS 13 developer edition.

Avid father of 3. Founder & lead Project Sputnik (dev systems). Office of the CTO at Dell focusing on DevOps & Open Source. These insightful opinions are my own

Part of Project Sputnik, these systems began as an open-ended exploratory project to identify what you — developers — demand in an ideal laptop. With your input, Project Sputnik became an official product and continues to evolve.

In addition to our 6th generation Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition, we are introducing the next generation of the four systems that make up our Dell Precision Ubuntu-based line as well as added a new All-in-One offering. Additionally be sure to also check our portfolio of fixed Precision workstations (tower and rack) that are also available with Ubuntu.

Intel’s Compute Card is a PC that can fit in your wallet | Ars Technica

Intel told us that processors with a TDP of up to 6W could fit inside the Compute Cards, which covers both low-power Atom chips like those that powered early versions of Intel’s Compute Stick to full Core M and Y-series Core i5 and i7 CPUs like the ones you find in laptops.

A year earlier I decided to switch from OSX to Ubuntu, so now is a good time to make a little retrospective. TL;DR: Linux now offers a pleasant desktop user experience and there’s no way back for me.

ARPANET – Advanced Research Projects Agency Network

The Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) was one of the world’s first operational packet switching networks, the first network to implement TCP/IP, and the progenitor of what was to become the global Internet. The network was initially funded by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA, later DARPA) within the U.S. Department of Defense for use by its projects at universities and research laboratories in the US. The packet switching of the ARPANET, together with TCP/IP, would form the backbone of how the Internet works. The packet switching was based on concepts and designs by American engineer Paul Baran, Welsh scientist Donald Davies[1][2] and Lawrence Roberts of the Lincoln Laboratory.[3] The TCP/IP communication protocols were developed for ARPANET by computer scientists Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf, and also incorporated some designs from Louis Pouzin.

Happy birthday, Mosaic: 21 years of the graphical web browsert

Mosaic was the first truly popular web browser.

That’s not to say that Mosaic was easy to use. It wasn’t. In the early to mid 1990s, simply getting on the internet was still something of a black art. Windows, for example, didn’t natively support the internet’s fundamental protocol, TCP/IP, until Windows 95 appeared. If you wanted TCP/IP on Windows before that, you needed to use the arcane but absolutely vital Trumpet Winsocket program, and find an internet service provider (ISP).

NeXT Computers’ Role In the Creation of the Web Browser

A NeXT Computer and its object oriented development tools and libraries were used by Tim Berners-Lee and Robert Cailliau at CERN to develop the world’s first web server software, CERN HTTPd, and also used to write the first web browser, WorldWideWeb.

Gopher protocol

The Gopher protocol /ˈɡfər/ is a TCP/IP application layer protocol designed for distributing, searching, and retrieving documents over the Internet. The Gopher protocol was strongly oriented towards a menu-document design and presented an alternative to the World Wide Web in its early stages, but ultimately HTTP became the dominant protocol. The Gopher ecosystem is often regarded as the effective predecessor of the World Wide Web.

How Did Internet Radio Start?

Carl Malamud founded the first Internet-only radio station, The Internet Multicasting Service (IMS), in 1993. IMS broadcasted from offices at the National Press Club Building in Washington, D.C. A non-profit organization, IMS depended largely on charitable contributions for its budget.

IMS started broadcasting in 1994, offering several hours of weekly programs including a “Geek of the Week” interview feature, an audio feed from Monitor Radio and CBC News, speeches from the floor of Congress and performances from the Kennedy Center. IMS later expanded to include an online presence for groups ranging from the National Press Club to the Red Sage Restaurant and City Lights Books.

Like many other Internet offerings, IMS pushed the limits of public access to government information by offering patent documents and filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission online and at no charge. By 1995, IMS expanded its offerings and broadcast 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Unfortunately, in 1996, IMS shut down. Visitors to the IMS web page will see broadcast concluded because “we finished our work and disbanded on April 1, 1996.” Malamud said the organization had run out of money and he wanted to get back to working on the net. “Now there are craftsmen out there who know their tools much better than I do,” Malamud said in an interview with John Schwartz. But IMS made its mark on the Internet. By the time it disbanded, Internet radio stations were numerous and many more would arrive.

On encapsulated linux applications

Hi I wonder why you haven’t talk much about linuxportable apps, is really great for users that dont want to deal with dependencies and distros and such. Even the Portable Linux Games is awesome since games are non standard linux installs (usually a gnome or kde app will make more sense than a game that has no connection with the DE).

Portable Games for Linux

Please let me know what u think, and who has used before?

AppImageKit

AppImage

Using AppImageKit you can package applications as AppImages that run on common Linux-based operating systems, such as Ubuntu, Fedora, debian and derivatives.

The AppImage format has the following properties:

  • The AppImage is an ISO9660 file
  • The contents of the ISO9660 file can be compressed with zf
  • In the first 32k of the ISO9660 file, an ELF executable is embedded
which mounts the AppImage, executes the application from the
mounted AppImage, and afterwards unmounts the AppImage again
  • The ISO9660 file contains an AppDir as per the ROX AppDir specification
  • The AppDir contains one desktop file as per the freedesktop.org specification

For an AppImage to run on most systems, the following conditions need to be met: 1. The AppImage needs to include all libraries and other dependencies that are not part of all of the base systems that the AppImage is intended to run on 2. The binaries contained in the AppImage need to be compiled on a system not newer than the oldest base system that the AppImage is intended to run on 3. The AppImage should actually be tested on the base systems that it is intended to run on

Official Google Blog: Introducing the Google Chrome OS

We designed Google Chrome for people who live on the web — searching for information, checking email, catching up on the news, shopping or just staying in touch with friends. However, the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web. So today, we’re announcing a new project that’s a natural extension of Google Chrome — the Google Chrome Operating System. It’s our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be.

Needs of the Few

  • Overall, a great story that feels like something you would see in a Star Trek episode, some great new maps that add to this mission’s environment, making it feel different. The only thing that could use improvement is gameplay, and to keep this a diplomatic mission, the only real thing the author could add is a puzzle, and less repeating of talking to tons of NPC’s. If you are mainly looking for story in your mission experience, this is a great one to check out.

New Segment: Talk Trek

Balance of Terror

  • 5:00 A lot of interesting setup. Showing the territory map, Spock giving the 411 and the shots of the crew listening in.
  • 14:00 Kirk takes input, even hostile input at that, and adjust his orders.
The Defector
  • Starts has a holodeck playtime between data and picard.
  • Powerful first on screen moment for the Romulan escape, I remember it feeling like a big deal back in the day.
  • One of my favorite ship flybys at 8:47 goes great with the “captain’s log”.
  • Asking data to keep a record of events is really clever.
  • At the 20 minute mark, the return back to the opening scene. A nice touch.
  • At the 22 minute mark, it’s a great Data learning to be human chat. Season 3 was great at this.
  • One worlds butcher, is another worlds hero. So true.
  • At the 38:40 One of the great, get us outta here moments, and the Romulans uncloak.
  • 42:26 Klinks decloak and screw the Romulans plan up. Loves it.
James Sloyan – Memory Alpha, the Star Trek Wiki
Face of the Enemy
  • The Tal Shiar appears to be quite the buracratic badass.
  • The most time we have ever spent on a Romulan ship?
  • As noted in the Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion, this episode marked the debut of Worf’s ponytail. He would retain this look for the rest of the series, throughout his tenure on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and all four Next Generation films. Hairstylist Joy Zapata and Michael Dorn had both lobbied for the change for some time. Zapata explained, “[Worf’s hair] used to remind me of a Klingon that had gone to the beauty salon; it looked like Donna Reed!”.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving in the USA, and following that comes one of the biggest retail shopping days of the entire year, commonly referred to as “Black Friday.” This is the day when retails stores slash their prices and offer insane incentives in hopes of drawing in the throngs of shoppers that choke the malls and storefronts on this crazy, crazy day.

Tonight, we’ll share with you some insight as to how the traditions began, horror stories that’ve cropped up over the years, and wrap up the episode by briefly covering Cyber Monday – the internet’s version of Black Friday – as well as sharing our Wish Lists with everyone, about what we’re hoping to see under Jupiter Broadcasting’s tree (or menorah) this holiday season.

HISTORY

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Friday_(shopping)

The term “Black Friday” originated in Philadelphia in the 60s.
It was a common phrase among bus and taxi drivers.  It originally had a very negative connotation, as it referred to the state of traffic on this day caused both by shoppers and people returning home after Thanksgiving.

Later, in the early 80s, it began taking on a new more financial-centric meaning.
The concept was that many retail stores operate at a loss for most of the year (in the RED) while they begin pulling in a profit during the holiday shopping season (going into the BLACK), and that this day marked the beginning of that BLACK season.

HORROR STORIES

In 2008, a Walmart greeter in New York was trampled to death by a mob that shattered the glass front doors and rampaged into the store just minutes before opening.
Also in 2008, two people were shot and killed in California, over a dispute in a Toys R Us.

CYBER MONDAY

In a recent turn of events, a group of major retailers got together in 2005 and declared the Monday following Thanksgiving as “Cyber Monday” and began holding sales accordingly.

The shopping trends were watched, and a large portion of folks would return to work on Monday and continue their shopping online if they did not find what they wanted during Black Friday.

SALE SECRECY

I asked my brother for Black Friday stories, and he said he didn’t have any YET, but he’s working retail this year.  Told me they didn’t even know what was going to go on sale this weekend!  They’re keep it all very secret, even from employees.

Whyyyy?

Apparently the sales are so ridiculous that many retailers are worried that competing stores will come up with bundles/sales/offers that are in direct competition with their offers.
example:  If Best Buy offers a laptop+bag+mouse+warranty for a stupid-low price, and Target finds out about it, they might put together the SAME bundle for $50 less.

Some major retailers have even attempted to use the “take-down system” of the DMCA to stop tip sites from publishing leaked sale details online. Even though this practice is incorrect (since sales are not copyrighted) it has still threatened some sites into shutting down in the past.
