Noah Visits Defcon

Hackers Fool Tesla S’s Autopilot to Hide and Spoof Obstacles

In a series of tests they plan to detail in a talk later this week at the Defcon hacker conference, they found that they could use off-the-shelf radio-, sound- and light-emitting tools to deceive Tesla’s autopilot sensors, in some cases causing the car’s computers to perceive an object where none existed, and in others to miss a real object in the Tesla’s path.

Hacking Hotel Keys and Point of Sale Systems at DEFCON

Hecker is scheduled to talk about his research at the DEFCON security conference in a talk where he will also reveal flaws in the magnetic stripe approach used in point-of-sale (POS) systems. In an interview ahead of the talk, Hecker detailed some of his key findings and the widespread risks.

PSA – Do not download Classic SHELL! read comments (MBR overwrite!!) mbr.rootkit

MBR Error Screen

Classic Shell itself wasn’t compromised. FossHub was and some download links were replaced by another program, not signed, that do only one thing: overwrite the MBR. It’s not an infected version of Classic Shell, Audacity or whatever, it’s only a small program that targets your MBR. If at the end of the installation process nothing happens beside a short cmd window then you have downloaded the malware.

“In short, a network service with no authentication was exposed to the internet,” the hacker told Softpedia in an email. “We were able to grab data from this network service to obtain source code and passwords that led us further into the infrastructure of FOSSHub and eventually gain control of their production machines, backup and mirror locations, and FTP credentials for the caching service they use, as well as the Google Apps-hosted email.”

Corrupt .exe’s downloads of both Audacity and Classic Shell have been removed from FossHub.com after being found laden with a Master Boot Record-overwriting Trojan.

Never Trust a Found USB Drive, Black Hat Demo Shows Why

“Despite the dangers of hackers, viruses and other bad things, almost half of those who found one of our flash drives plugged it into a computer,” Bursztein said.

Btrfs RAID 5/6 Code Found To Be Very Unsafe & Will Likely Require A Rewrite

“more or less fatally flawed, and a full scrap and rewrite to an entirely different raid56 mode on-disk format may be necessary to fix it. And what’s even clearer is that people /really/ shouldn’t be using raid56 mode for anything but testing with throw-away data, at this point. Anything else is simply irresponsible.”

Hoopla

Hiring a programmer? Ditch the coding interview and get back to basics

So before we go any further, let’s establish one very simple truth: coding interviews are worthless.

Why Develop Software On Linux

From my point of view, Linux is indeed a superior platform for developers, and that is becoming increasingly so due to a number of critical factors that have improved in the last ten years. Every year, our toolset srengthens, and does so at an exponential rate in comparison to the relatively stagnant Apple and Microsoft ecosystems.

Flatpak is gaining momentum

The Xdg App project has been renamed to Flatpak to get an easy-to-remember name and reflect that after almost two years of development it’s finally ready for broader adoption.

Google’s fair use victory is good for open source

Hurst is wrong in asserting that Google’s fair use victory means that anyone can freely appropriate whatever they want from open source and other programs. All that the jury verdict means is that Google made fair use of the Java API packages. Anyone else who appropriates elements from another firm’s software would have to defend a legal challenge on much the same grounds that Google did: either by claiming that the elements appropriated were not within the scope of protection that copyright law provides to software developers or that the appropriation of those elements was fair use.

The Google/Oracle decision was bad for copyright and bad for software

Though Android shares important elements with Java, Android is not a Java platform; it does not pass the tests that Sun and Oracle developed, and it is not designed to do so. Google deliberately chose to reject elements of Java’s design that it didn’t like, leaving a hodge-podge that is Java in some places but not-Java in others.

That lack of interest in interoperability means, in my view, that Google’s use of the Java APIs should not qualify as fair use.

Mike Moves to the West?

ESA astronaut Tim Peake will take part in an experiment dubbed ‘SUPVIS-M’ (Supervisory Control of Mars Yard Rover) in which he will operate, from the International Space Station (ISS), a UK-built rover – Bridget – located in the Airbus Mars Yard in Stevenage, UK.

Getting started with Linux:

  1. Obtain the Ubuntu Install image from ubuntu.com

  2. Write the Ubuntu installation image to a USB flash media device. On PC use Etcher or Rufus & on a mac, use Etcher. Be careful to make sure the flash drive is chosen in this step.

  3. Once that is finished, eject the drive and insert the drive into your PC/Mac

  4. When booting the PC/Mac press F2 (or your computer’s hotkey to access the boot menu), or if you’re running a newer version of Windows such as 8 or 10 boot into Windows, press start, go to advanced start options, choose UEFI Settings, Disable secureboot. Boot back into Windows repeat the steps to get back into UEFI and choose to boot off of the USB device.

  5. Play around with the live demo system and if you enjoy it, follow the on screen instructions to install Ubuntu either as a secondary option to MacOS X or Windows, or as the only option, whichever you prefer.

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS brings big changes to the Linux desktop

The Ubuntu desktop has seen very little change since Ubuntu 14.04 LTS was released two years ago. That’s about to change with today’s launch of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS—code-named “Xenial Xerus”—which brings big changes and welcome polish to the classic Unity 7 desktop.

Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 LTS launches today with the GNOME 3.18 desktop environment.

According to the announcement, release highlights include new community wallpapers, and the replacement of the Ubuntu Software Centre app with the GNOME Software graphical package manager.

A new project leader has been elected, Set Hallström, which took over the project on April 21, 2016, the day of the official release of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

“Mythbuntu 16.04 has been released. This is a point release on our 14.04 LTS release. If you are already on 14.04, you can get these same updates via the normal update process. This is our third LTS release and will be supported until shortly after the 18.04 release.,” reads the announcement.

“After a year and a half of intense work by the LXD team, LXD 2.0 has been released today! LXD 2.0 is our first production-ready release and also a Long Term Support release, meaning that we will be supporting it with frequent bugfix releases until the 1st of June 2021,” said Stéphane Graber, technical lead for LXD, Canonical.

Is This Really The Ubuntu 16.10 Codename? (Answer: It Is)

“Y is for …Yakkety yakkety yakkety yakkety yakkety yakkety yakkety yakkety yak. Naturally.”

LinuxCon’s surprise keynote speaker Linus Torvalds muses about open-source software | ZDNet

Linus

In a broad-ranging question and answer session, Linus Torvalds, Linux’s founder, shared his thoughts on the current state of open source and Linux.

Linus Torvalds: Security is never going to be perfect

Linus

Linus seemed as excited about containers as a fish would be about a bicycle. “I am so happy that the kernel tends to be fairly far removed from all these issues, all the buzzwords and all the new technologies,” he said. “We end up being in a situation where we only care about us working on and how people use the kernel. I am so focused on the kernel that I don’t even care very much. We see when people need technologies from us to implement all of this, obviously there is c-groups and virtualization, if you do it that way. So we see that side of it. But at the same time, I don’t get involved in politics between all the different groups and all the stuff that goes on top of the kernel. And I am really happy I don’t have to.”

Torvalds: Don’t talk to me about containers and other buzzwords

“I am a very plodding, pedestrian kind of person,” Torvalds said during a Q&A session with Linux Foundation boss Jim Zemlin at LinuxCon in Seattle on Wednesday. “I look six months ahead. I look ahead at this release and I know what’s coming up in the next one.

“I don’t think planning 10 years ahead is necessarily very sane. Because if you think about Linux ten years back and where Linux was ten years ago, trying to plan for where we are now would have been completely insane.”

Mark Shuttleworth says Snappy was born long before CoreOS and the Atomic Project | ITworld

Shuttleworth

Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Canonical and Ubuntu, made a surprise visit at LinuxCon. I sat down with him for a video interview and talked about Ubuntu on IBM’s new LinuxONE systems, Canonical’s plans for containers, open source in the enterprise space and much more.

LinuxCon: Core Infrastructure Initiative Boosts Security Efforts

The Linux Foundation announced the new badging effort in a press conference with media and analysts. She said the program is akin to the badges used on the popular Github code-development and -sharing site.

Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago – RUNS LINUX

Runs Linux Screen Shot

Sent in By: Anton C

I visited the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago recently and one of the exhibits was about robotics. I spotted one robot that recognizes faces and appears to be controlled by a Linux box.

I would also like to share my recent first experience with System76. I purchased a Meerkat to replace my HTPC that just died. The day after I made the purchase, the Meerkat went on sale. System76 called to notify me that because of the sale, I could either get my money back for the amount of the sale, or I could get a free memory upgrade and still get some money back!
Frankly, I’m astounded at that level of customer service. I’ve never experienced anything like it before and I thought it deserved a mention.

Germany to Ditch Linux for Windows

LiMux

Two influential politicians in a German city that ditched Microsoft in favour of Linux are agitating for a switch back to Windows.

The councillors from Munich’s conservative CSU party have called the custom version of Ubuntu installed on their laptops “cumbersome to use” and “of very limited use”.

The letter from the two senior members of the city’s IT committee asks mayor Dieter Reiter to consider removing the Linux-based OS and to install Windows with Microsoft Office.

The city spent years migrating about 15,000 staff to Limux, a custom-version of Ubuntu, and other open source software – a move the city said had saved it more than €10m ($11m).

SouthEast LinuxFest | Linux and in the GNU/South

The SouthEast LinuxFest is a community event for anyone who wants to learn more about Linux and Open Source Software. It is part educational conference and part social gathering. Like Linux itself, it is shared with attendees of all skill levels to communicate tips and ideas, and to benefit all who use Linux and Open Source Software. SELF is the place to learn, to make new friends, to network with new business partners, and most importantly, to have fun!

This talk will introduce you to the concepts behind botnets, and also show a live demonstration of a botnet on a sandboxed network.

We’ll start off by discussing the implications of running a botnet and the horrifying effect of distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks. I’ll demonstrate how bots behave on infected hosts, and give attendees a look at a command and control (C&C) system, which ultimately gives the bots their orders.

At the end of the discussion attendees will be encouraged to share their horror stories of botnet attacks on networks and systems that they’ve administered.

There are a lot of resources available online for those who’d like to research botnets. I’ll share some of these with attendees, but please realize that this talk is for research purposes only.

HP kills The Machine, repurposes design around conventional technologies

Last year, HP announced it was building The Machine — a computer meant to leap as far above conventional modern systems as a high-end Xeon workstation is above an IBM mainframe from the 1960s. The entire system was designed to work with special-purpose cores and to use memristors as a universal memory architecture. The entire system would be tied together through extensive use of silicon photonics. It was bold, ambitious, and cutting-edge. And now, it’s pretty much dead.

Many thanks to everyone who donated to the Ubuntu MATE community this
month. You have been generous as always and ensured that we can meet all
the costs associated with running the Ubuntu MATE project and the
community site. In fact, this month we are able to reward some other
projects that Ubuntu MATE benefits from.

If the torrent I downloaded is any indication — it had almost triple the number of seeders compared to the rest of the flavors — Ubuntu MATE is going to be a very popular release. That said, I’d wait for the second beta at least before jumping in with both feet.

LinuxCon 2014

LinuxCon North America | Linux Conferences and Linux Events | The Linux Foundation

LinuxCon is the place to learn from the best and the brightest, delivering content from the leading maintainers, developers and project leads in the Linux community and from around the world. There’s simply no other event in North America where developers, sys admins, architects and all types and levels of technical talent gather together under one roof for education, collaboration and problem-solving to further the Linux platform.

LinuxCon Day 1: Open Source is Eating the World | Open Source Today

Wednesday was the first day of LinuxCon and CloudOpen North America 2014 in Chicago. The event began with a keynote speech from Jim Zemlin on the State of Linux where he touched on a wide range of new developments and issues in the Linux Industry. He opened his keynote by stating “Linux Represents one of the greatest shared technology investments in the history of computing.” A testament to the adoption of Linux in nearly every single modern industry.

The IUS Community Project is a brain child of the RPM Development Team at
Rackspace Hosting. Since 2006, we have provided and maintain packages for

we maintain a number of package sets for an audience of thousands of production
servers. Until now, these packages have only been available internally to
Rackspace customers. After a while we started thinking: Why not make this
available publicly for everyone to benefit?

Linux kernel developer Greg Kroah-Hartman moderated the discussion and commented that Linux already runs everywhere. He asked Torvalds where he thinks Linux should go next. “I still want the desktop,” Torvalds said as the audience erupted into boisterous applause.

The challenge on the desktop is not a kernel problem, Torvalds said. “It’s a whole infrastructure problem. I think we’ll get there one day.”

Ditching Linux for Windows? The truth isn’t that simple, says Munich

No says the council, in spite of numerous reports to the contrary. Suggestions the council has decided to back away from Linux are wrong, according to council spokesman Stefan Hauf.

He said the council’s recently elected mayor Dieter Reiter has instead simply commissioned a report into the future IT system for the council.

“The new mayor has asked the administration to gather the facts so we can decide and make a proposal for the city council how to proceed in future,” he said.

“Not only for Limux but for all of IT. It’s about the organisation, the costs, performance and the useability and satisfaction of the users.”

The study, being conducted by internal IT staff at the council, will consider which operating systems and software packages – both proprietary and open source – would best satisfy this criteria. The study is not, as has been reported, solely focused around the question of whether to drop Limux and move back to Windows, he said.

Microsoft Lobby Denies the State of Chile Access to Free Software

Fresh on the heels of the entire Munich and Linux debacle, another story involving Microsoft and free software has popped up across the world, in Chile. About: OSCON 2014 – O’Reilly Conferences, July 20 – 24, 2014, Portland, OR

Now in its 16th year:

OSCON is where all of the pieces come together: developers, innovators, businesspeople, and investors. In the early days, this trailblazing O’Reilly event was focused on changing mainstream business thinking and practices; today OSCON is about real-world practices and how to successfully implement open source in your workflow or projects. While the open source community has always been viewed as building the future—that future is here, and it’s everywhere you look.

Attic – Deduplicating Archiver

Submitted by kleptoz in the LAS Subreddit

Attic is a secure backup program for Linux, FreeBSD and Mac OS X. Attic is designed for efficient data storage where only new or modified data is stored.
Features

Space efficient storage Variable block size deduplication is used to reduce the number of bytes stored by detecting redundant data. Each file is split into a number of variable length chunks and only chunks that have never been seen before are compressed and added to the repository.

Optional data encryption All data can be protected using 256-bit AES encryption and data integrity and authenticity is verified using HMAC-SHA256. Off-site backups Attic can store data on any remote host accessible over SSH as long as Attic is installed. Backups mountable as filesystems Backup archives are mountable as userspace filesystems for easy backup verification and restores.

GOG.com Now Supports Linux!

imgurlArea 26-07-14 10_22_26.png

So, one of the most popular site feature requests on our community wishlist is granted today: Linux support has officially arrived on GOG.com!

The first 50+ titles we’ve have in store for you come from all the corners of our DRM-Free catalog. Note that we’ve got many classic titles coming officially to Linux for the very first time, thanks to the custom builds prepared by our dedicated team of penguin tamers. That’s over twenty fan-favorite GOG.com classics, like FlatOut&Flatout 2, , Darklands, or Realms of the Haunting we’ve personally ushered one by one into the welcoming embrace of Linux gamers. That’s already quite a nice chunk of our back-catalog, and you can expect more from our dedicated Linux team soon

“OK, but how will Linux support actually work on GOG.com” – you might ask. For both native Linux versions, as well as special builds prepared by our team, GOG.com will provide distro-independent tar.gz archives and support convenient DEB installers for the two most popular Linux distributions: Ubuntu and Mint, in their current and future LTS editions. Helpful and responsive customer support has always been an important part of the GOG.com gaming experience. We wouldn’t have it any other way when it comes to Linux, and starting today our helpdesk offers support for our official Linux releases on Ubuntu and Mint systems.

Major win for open document format in the UK

The UK government declared that all official office suites must support Open Document Format (ODF).

The world’s most secure OS may have a serious problem

TailsOS

The Tails operating system is one of the most trusted platforms in cryptography, favored by Edward Snowden and booted up more than 11,000 times per day in May. But according to the security firm Exodus Intelligence, the program may not be as secure as many thought. The company says they’ve discovered an undisclosed vulnerability that will let attackers deanonymize Tails computers and even execute code remotely, potentially exposing users to malware attacks. Exodus is currently working with Tails to patch the bug, and expects to hand over a full report on the exploit next week.

CoreOS Stable Release

CoreOS

CoreOS 367.1.0, our first version on the stable channel, includes the following:

  • Linux 3.15.2
  • Docker 1.0.1
  • Support on all major cloud providers, including Rackspace Cloud, Amazon EC2 (including HVM), and Google Compute Engine
  • Commercial support via CoreOS Managed Linux

The CoreOS developers have announced the release of version 367.1.0 of the CoreOS distribution; this is the first version deemed to be stable and ready for production. “Please note: The stable release is not including etcd and fleet as stable, this release is only targeted at the base OS and Docker 1.0. etcd/fleet stable support will be in subsequent releases.”

LFNW Overtime Interviews

crouton is a set of scripts that bundle up into an easy-to-use, Chromium OS-centric chroot generator. Currently Ubuntu and Debian are supported (using debootstrap behind the scenes), but \”Chromium OS Debian, Ubuntu, and Probably Other Distros Eventually Chroot Environment\” doesn\’t acronymize as well (crodupodece is admittedly pretty fun to say, though).

Your needs change from one moment to the next. That\’s why Firefox OS does the same. It gives you the power to live every moment to its fullest and participate in a better world.
