Samsung Recalls New Galaxy Note7 Due to Exploding Batteries [Updated] – Mac Rumors

According to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency, an unnamed Samsung official says the company is conducting an investigation and is expected to announce the results this weekend or early next week. Samsung has indeed traced the explosions to the battery of the device and is in talks with Verizon and other U.S. business partners to figure out how to deal with the issue.

Hoopla

Qualcomm will reportedly not support Nougat on Snapdragon 800/801 Androids

Qualcomm “will not release graphics drivers” for either the 801 or 800 CPU, so the “HTC One M8 and other devices” based on said processors “won’t get official Android 7.0.” Going deeper, it sounds like this odd “refusal” to support a pair of still very robust SoCs relates to Nougat’s Vulkan API integration, a new high-performance 3D graphics standard the SD800 and 801 are simply not compatible with.

Apple Might Pull Your App!

Effective immediately Apple will be going through the App Store looking for apps that have not been properly maintained and ultimately will remove them from the App Store.

A small percentage of units—35 have been identified so far—have exploded or caught fire while charging due to a flaw in the phone’s lithium battery. Yep, exploded.

In 1 minute, Slack founder will make you rethink how to sell innovation

What we are selling is _not _the software product — the set of all the features, in their specific implementation — because there are just not many buyers for this software product.

Apple Invites Media to September 7 Event: ‘See You on the 7th’ – Mac Rumors

Apple today sent out media invites for an iPhone-centric event that will be held on Wednesday, September 7 at 10:00 am at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, California. Media invites (via The Verge) offer up a first look at the theme of the event and feature the simple tagline: “See you on the 7th.”

A photo claiming to show a specification sheet for a 256GB-capacity iPhone 7 Plus has been circulating online today.

But the majority of our discussion this week is around the open sourcing of Swift, what Apple got really right & what areas still really need improvement.

Plus the real possibility of replacing your laptop with a large tablet, starting your first app the “easy way” vs the “hard way” & more!

Swift.org – Welcome to Swift.org

Swift goes Open Source Screenshot

We are excited by this new chapter in the story of Swift. After Apple unveiled the Swift programming language, it quickly became one of the fastest growing languages in history. Swift makes it easy to write software that is incredibly fast and safe by design. Now that Swift is open source, you can help make the best general purpose programming language available everywhere.

Not only is Swift on GitHub, but the Swift team will be working completely in the open. Apple did a spectacular job with the release. Not only do we have the source code, but we have the entire commit history for each project, a very detailed view into the Swift team’s development process, and access to the Swift evolution process. Everything you need to know is on Swift.org.

initial checkin, nothing much to see here.

The Swift Package Manager is a tool for managing the distribution of Swift code.
It’s integrated with the Swift build system
to automate the process of downloading, compiling, and linking dependencies.

TL;DR: Apache 2.0 License + Full Standard and Core Libraries included + Compiler + copyright owned by the contributor (i.e. no assignment or CLA) + good community structure and documentation + code of conduct.

Saying goodbye to Carousel and Mailbox

We’re committed to making the transitions from these products as painless as possible. We’ve posted more information on the Carousel blog and the Mailbox blog, and we’ll be communicating details directly to users of both apps in the coming days. Mailbox will be shut down on February 26th, 2016, and Carousel will be shut down on March 31st, 2016.

The post-pivot startup cost the storage company “well over” $50 million, according to multiple sources. And we’ve heard that that the price was around $100 million in cash and stock.

Another $1 Million Crowdfunded Gadget Company Collapses

Remember the Robotic Dragonfly? The little drone was an early crowdfunding success story, netting over a $1 million in pledges on Indiegogo in 2012. At the time, it was one of the first crowdfunded gadgets to raise more than a million dollars. The project promised a tiny robot that can fly like a bird and hover like an insect — and for $99, too. Bad news, friends. This little drone is not taking off as scheduled.

The company announced yesterday that it is in deep financial trouble. But it’s not their fault, the founders say in notes on Indiegogo. It’s PayPal and Indiegogo’s fault for not releasing funds. How much? The company didn’t release that information.

The direction of computing is only going in one way—to the cloud

The direction of computing is going in just one way—towards the cloud. As companies and individuals learn what it can do, many new ways of working are opening up. For example, if you’re selling a service or providing an app via the cloud, all your users are permanently or very frequently connected. You can watch how they use your product, and feed that information straight back into your development cycle to alleviate points of pain or optimise and expand popular areas. That simply wasn’t possible before. You can analyse and act on real-time data to add far more intelligence to your product than your users’ devices can support, as Siri and Google Now already show. The constraints of pre-cloud computing are fading away, and the age of true utility is here.
